Class is now in session! The knowledgeable man in the garage has spoken. Agree on buying a new filter instead of cleaning it. Let’s face it. These large touring bikes and brand aren’t cheap. OMG! 😂 System Filters like your home A/C units need a change out. Keep your air intake crispy fresh. Any brand of them out there. Thank you Chris for laying down the facts. Just the facts.

The K&N says clean every 75,000 miles but I will just change it with a new one a lot sooner, thanks for watching!

That’s the beauty of buying a K&N filter, it can be cleaned and recharged for future use. If you’re not going to clean it. Just continue with the OEM filter. What I do is purchase a 2nd K&N filter, clean one and put it away until it’s time to change it.

Chris you should get the kn oil in a spray can and apply some more to it and let it dry for another day kn applies not enough oil on there new filters i have been using there filters for over 20 years if you watch when they make them they spray a little ring around them and let them wick they say in 24 hours they will fully wick when you get the filter you can see how light color it is when i do a recharge i clean it and let it dry for 1 day then i put it on cardboard and apply a good amount over it and let dry for about 8 hours then install it,if new out of box it will pass some small particles through it. I just bought a 2002 gl1800 fi light comes on at freeway speed only the code is air flow temp sensor i used a bore scope to look at air filter thru removing right hand storage pocket went in intake snorkel it has a kn in it its so dirty its white in color and not letting the air flow it needs at a higher rpm setting the code, after restarting the bike after putting the probe in and steering the dust up the exhaust smelled of dirt. My new bike has 1hundred thousand miles on it the guy i bought it from told me that it wasn't about the bike it was about his club now i know why how poorly it was serviced. I was a senior master technician for subaru and honda for thirty years now retired. If you watch TH-cam on kn recharge they will show you to put a lot of oil on it they Skemp on costs when making the filters but trying to make more money after you buy it witch it needs should look darker in color when applied.

Changed out the Filter on my 2018 Goldwing in December of 2023 with a K&N air filter. Chris, given that it takes about four hours to disassemble the Goldwing to get down to the air filter box there doesn't seem to be any advantage to purchasing a second one. I have urged a local motorcycle shop to purchase a Bosch borescope or something similar to stick down in the air box before disassembling the bike to look at the condition of the air filter. Heck, given how cheap some of them are it could be a good investment for all Goldwing riders. Finally, after owning about forty motorcycle and putting K&N filter in some of them it is stretch of K&N to claim that their filters increase horsepower. I'll bet if you put a motorcycle on a dyno after a K&N filter replacement you wouldn't be able to see much or any difference. Same with most aftermarket exhaust silencers.

The engineering that went into designing a great motorcycle around the air filter is just plain stupidity. 3 hours to change an air filter is ridiculous. Max McAllister from Traxxion Dynamics has a great video on the Honda 6th generation Goldwing air filter replacement that shows these air filters at different mileage changes. It is a must watch for anyone owning one of these beasts. And for the engineer who designed this, they should have been fired!!

I just changed my 2015 f6b at 25,000 and it was terrible I won’t do that again. 16-20 depending on conditions

What a mess just to change an air filter I don’t see myself spending 30,000 dollars on a bike so complicated , why Honda can just re think in the location of the air filter?? Let’s go back to the 76,77 models of GL with the key you open the fake gas tank , remove the tool tray and voila there is the air filter I’m sure Honda could do something like it was in this new model . Not all of us are mechanic oriented or can pay a 600.00 to replace a cheap air filter ??

I've only got 3000 on mine but I am already concerned because the bike was delivered to me new with more than a quart TOO MUCH oil in the crankcase.
It's been said that that extra oil can get sucked back up onto the air filter causing clogging issues. Not sure if this is true. ?
Looks like a job for a real professional. $$$

Hey make sure you are reading the manual how to check the oil level. It is warm up the engine, let set for about 5 mins. then with the bike straight up, check the oil dip stick after removing it, then wipe it off then stick it back in without screwing it down, then check the level. I thought mine was wrong when I bought it, but reading the manual explained the oil level check.

      Yes...Definitely.
I saw the early reporting right here a couple of years ago. That's how I discovered it was well over-filled. Seems there is more than one dealership that could learn their lessons right here! Thank you!
I do check religiously and correctly and it's always right where I left it. 😂
