    The Cayman GT4 is now what the 911 used to be. A light tension inducing sports car, not a cruiser. And probably better balanced. Though the 911 is probably more suitable for 95% of driving times.

    There is no basic 911 , 991 or 992 that I would trade my 981 GT4 for, even if the 911 “performance” is better. The 911 is a grand tourer while the GT4 is a proper sports car.

      @@gazzabrownhigh8891 Have you owned one? On a first drive they feel long but you do get used to them. They are fine on track and on the road there's enough pull lower down in 3rd to get you around. Nobody drives around redlining every gear on the road, even if they were shorter. Ok so you don't get to use that wonderful gearbox as much as you'd like, but the rest of the driving experience more than makes up for it in my opinion.

    If you're the sort of person that really wants a track day car from Porsche at a much lower price point than a 911 GT3 or GT3 RS, the Cayman GT4 is ideal; if you're looking for a great DD with a less edgy feel, the 911 Carrera is the ticket. If you really must have +400hp, just opt for the Carrera S - I've driven it, and I assure you it's a sports car too. :)

    When the GT4 and the Boxster Spyder came out in 2016 with the 911S 3.8 liter flat 6, I opted for one vs the 911S. The 2016 Cayman series were both incredible sports cars, and their sport exhaust systems were not encumbered with the newly required particulate filter, so they howled and popped like a proper Porsche flat six should. Yes they have long gearing; maybe one day Porsche will stop protecting their rear engined flagship 911s, because otherwise the mid-engined Caymans would be the obvious choice. That said, for folks wanting that extra .5 second 0-60 reduction, the 911, with its lower gearing, will always win, and hence the cost margins between the two will continue to increase Porsche’s bottom line. But I wanted the Cayman series car, and here’s why; I wasn’t going to track the car, I wanted a fabulous, lightweight (2850 lbs), high performance mid engined car that had sport suspension, torque vectoring, huge brakes, and manual 6-speed. I decided on the Spyder simply because I didn’t like the boy-racer wing bolted to the rear deck of the GT4; again I wasn’t going to track the car, and to me the spoiler looks garish. And I can put the top down! I will never regret my decision, and I’m personally convinced that Porsche has never built better overall sports cars than the Cayman GT4/Spyder series.

    I'd take the GTS - And of course the Cayman is based on the Boxster which is also a brilliant car, but the shell stiffens that up even further. I want a coupe and I want a Manual gearbox.. . No massive spoilers everywhere or crunching ride height. No, I want a road car, one with a 4000cc engine - One I can spec full leather on and one I can do the occasional track day with (Watch Mark Webber driving a GTS on track) And yes the 992 Carrera could also appeal for long continent crushing journeys where you can just relax (If it wasn't for the loud road noise coming from the tyres (Harrys Garage)) - Oh hell I think I'll just stick with my 2.9 Gen 2 987, it does 90% of all that and at a fraction of the cost.

    No comparison, regarding price. We all know the GT4 will never be available at the stated RRP. Porsche dealers want over 100,000k for these models.

  • @motorgearhead
    @motorgearhead 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do the longer gear ratios relate to loss of performance? I guess that answer depends on vehicle weight and engine torque... now what I’m about to give as an example may not hold true to the real world but in simulated driving/racing I’ve seen the factory gear box put down faster lap times on certain tracks. Does this hold true to the real world? I have no idea.... just an observation. Porsche factory engineers selected those ratios for a reason. My real life car is a C6Z06 Corvette. The sim version of the car does have a familiar feeling to the real thing. Away, just an observation that may not have any merit at all. But someone at Porsche selected those gear ratios.... what was the reason? In the sim, closer/shorter ratios were a little slower. Again, not real world results.... but who knows?

    • @RichardADastardly
      @RichardADastardly 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could the long ratios be related to the unrestricted speed on much of the German autobahn network?
      My 2003 Mini Cooper S allegedly goes to 45 mph in 1st gear and 71 mph in 2nd, which feels weird on UK roads.

    • @motorgearhead
      @motorgearhead 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      RichardADastardly - long ratios would help reduce fuel consumption at autobahn speeds Im guessing.

    Dan, you're very well spoken, with great diction n' vocab. How often do you hear expressions like "pin sharp" or "imperious"? Plus all the fundamentals were covered - engine, trans, chassis, dynamics n' the everyday considerations. But, that huge blunder in the middle of the review! " Give you a proper thump up the backside!" (5:46) What? How could you ever, ever say such a thing with a straight face on the internet? Fail.
