The fact that Sega used this version of the song which is pulled straight from the prototype in Origins literally goes to show they should have done the same with the Carnival Night, Ice Cap & Launch Base themes.
you see.. the songs for the zones come from the same prototype that this is from, it's just that this was already finished, along with icz, because don't cap with me origins and proto icz are barely different, yes they're different but they're practically identical cmon. but lbz and cnz weren't finished yet. they also replaced the competition track, which was already finished.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 by itself ALMOST had an emotional Credits theme. This sounds too beautiful, like a fitting end to your journey (even through this was only the first half of a greater adventure).
I'm guessing that's why they changed it. This sounds like something that would be played after completely finishing your adventure. But, this does beg the question... Why did they go back to a traditional staff roll credits theme (combining all zones like Sonic 1 and 2) in S&K instead of going with this one? This sounds like it'd be perfect at the end of S&K.
Honestly, there's needs to be a patch for Sonic 3 Complete that adds these Prototype tracks. I'd really like to see the Sonic & Knuckles credits with this song.

Also, very 80 / 90 Year's-ish. You can really tell your jorney is over when you hear this song. Even though it was meant to be used in Sonic 3 Alone, I guess.

Proto Ice Cap is actually more fitting than MJ Ice Cap since Sonic actually starts the zone by hitting and riding a snowboard lodged in the snow (said snowboard originally being the door you break after you beat Flying Battery Zone Act 2) As for me, I fell in love with Proto Launch Base Zone

Damn, I don't know why the hell Sega allowed to put Michael Jackson's credits theme into the final version and not the prototype track... It's not that I don't like the Michael Jackson theme, I mean after playing Sonic 3 a lot of times I like his version of the staff roll, but I think that this track feels more like an "ending sequence" or a Credits theme more than the one that Michael made. It's like this tune is saying "You've completed the whole game, now it's time to go into the horizon looking for new adventures ¡Until next game!" The one Michael Jackson made is says something like "You've defeated Dr.Robotnik and got all the chaos emeralds but the death egg is still on Angel Island... Wait until Sonic & Knuckles to have the full ending"
Honestly, that's kinda the problem: this track feeling more like a true finale makes it less fitting considering that it's specifically for Sonic 3, which ends on a cliffhanger due to being half of a larger project, so it doesn't make sense to make the ending feel like a true ending when it wasn't; because of this, the final credits theme essentially saying "to be continued in Sonic & Knuckles" is for the better. I prefer the final credits theme to Sonic 3, anyway.
Man. This song is the reason why I love S3&K (the AIR port at least). S3 was the only game I played that actually felt like I was making progress. That feeling of beating the first part and going onto the second with a totally different theme, music changing and everything, feels so damn good. I wish more Sonic games, hell, more games in GENERAL used this way of progression.
One thing I would LOVE for Senoue to do with the "redone" Sonic 3 and Knuckles soundtrack is create a new, full-on credits medley featuring EVERY level from the combined game.
[My epilogue if Sonic 3 alone released with this beautiful ending theme] After sonic destroys Big Arm and looks on as the Death Egg is falling, the screen slowly fades to white WITHOUT the weapon being destroyed. [In this ending, Sonic or Tails do NOT randomly jump to the screen and look at the viewer. Trying to make this ending all atmospheric and stuff.] The scene then transitions to a tranquil blue sky with birds slowly flying across the screen for two seconds while a paragraph appears and reads: (Music starts here-0:00) “And so, after successfully sabotaging the relaunch of Dr. Robotnik’s diabolical Death Egg, Sonic and Tails continue their exploration through the mysterious island that suddenly appeared upon the ocean. But so many questions are still left un-answered. Where did this island come from and what are its secrets? Who is the mysterious red sole inhabitant who stole the emeralds from our heroes? And most importantly, is the doctor & his weapon truly defeated? Alas we must find out another time. The Origins version of the prototype tracks are based from a much earlier material, so they aren't new. The prototype End Credits theme in Origins is proof Jun didn't do anything new with the prototype tracks.
While I like the final version more, I really love this. I feel like if both themes were part of final game, this could be the good ending theme while the final can be the best ending theme while the normal ending can just be what the original game had.

They're entirely different games. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was originally planned to be a 3D game, with the models and 3D-looking sprites being a remnant of what it was supposed to be.

The Stranger in Moscow finale is emotional. Very calm and serene-an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and the hero can now rest.

What is the tempo? None of the MIDI files I can find have the right one.

Really? I made a cover and tried to synchronise it and the closest I got was at 122, which eventually fell out of sync.
Turns out the closest tempo I’ve managed to get is 121.9 BPM.
@@elhasmusic The original tempo of the midi file is 125. The genesis implementation doesn't conform to a whole value.
