I'm not either! Lol. The power wire (red) from the camera gets wired to the reverse light (white). When you put your car in reverse, power gets sent to the camera, it turns on, and sends a signal to the headunit and tells the headunit to switch to the backup camera screen and turn on. Once you shift out of reverse, power gets cut to the camera and it turns off. Does that make sense?

I didn't have to remove all of that window trim when I installed mine. All I did was fish from the top of the trim down to around where the back seat is. I love having a backup camera on my xB. More often than not, those Android head units accept a dash cam. I installed one on mine and it works really well.
I did today, used your fishing technic but didn't remove the whole rear. I just pulled the gray cover from one side at the top, fished the cable down and used the little hole for replacing the light bulb to connect the wire (couldn't find the part were you say wish color wire it connects to 😠 ) then took off the rubber seal by rear passenger door/quarter panel and fished my wire through there, saved me a ton of time. I couldn't have done it without watching your video, so Ill give you all the credit due. This crap was hard and had me annoyed, but I did it!!
Ran my wires from the hu to the camera up along the headliner and down the A-pillar, also instead of removing the rear garnish thingy I just removed the passenger side plate light to get to the grommet. Like you I would run back and forth to the net to find clearer info on hooking what wire to what. Yours came came out good and I'm sure it'll help a lot of first timers out.
@@ExtremeDailyDrivers No need to remove the headliner I used the coat hanger to run it along the side. Iirc I removed the grab handles and pulled the tops of the b and c pillar plastic pieces down too.

I did the same thing on the rear grommet when I did mine. Absolutely no way you'd get an eca cable through that easily. Glad you got it done and figured out the red wire. I'm glad Mines done as well.
You don't need to write it down! Just sub to the channel so you are notified when videos come out and then rewatch the videos when you are ready to do the install or get inspired!

Astroglide (water based) and an astronomical amount of tape (I use gorilla tape). Works wonders when it comes to getting large objects through tight spaces.

Have you checked out the reverse camera that goes on the wind shield wiper ?? The camera is $10 off eBay and I use the grommet fro the wiper to install
I got the same radio same backup camera I'm not sure what I did wrong but it's yet to work that's why I'm watching this video again 6 months later but how do you get the head unit to have that home screen personalized like you do hopefully you see this and able to help thank you
I just changed the theme, if I remember correctly. You can go to the Play Store and search on "android theme". Then download the app and make any changes you want. I emailed that pic of the engine bay to myself and uploaded it on the car stereo and saved as the background. It's real easy. It just like a cell phone. Good luck.

Dammit man... now you got me looking at android radios and a back up 📷. Swapping out the cargo speakers for 6.5 sub-woofers also installing a small amp. Figure I'll gather it all together first in hopes to only disassemble the rear once.
I thought about that before I did any of this, however, the car would be down for more than one day. I can take the rear apart in less than 15 minutes now, for whatever that's worth.

Did you connect a any power wires from the camera to a “reverse gear wire” anywhere? How is the head unit detect that you are going in reverse for the back up camera screen to come on? I’m a lil confused about the power camera wiring part. Or does the android radio auto detects someone that you are in reverse? (I have a 9 inch android radio I’mma trying to install a backup camera on)
The reverse light you tap at the rear end powers the signal telling the camera to come on. I have watched a bunch of you tube videos to get this info. I am no pro.

I spliced into the red and black wire, which I thought was the reverse light power. But I get "no video signal" when I shift to reverse. Two days of work and it still isn't working. Darn it.
I tried using guitar string....it go stuck on the frame of the trunk lid....i ordered wire hangers from amazon, not entirely sure how im gonna get the guitar string out lol
It came with it, but I did the same mod to my OG xB. If you google it you can find the part number for the block off. You get it at Lowes or Home Depot. It's not made for the box. You match paint it and it just gets siliconed on there.

The two red wires that are on the AV wire need to be hooked up. One at the rear tail light and one to the back of the radio. I hope that helps. Good luck.
Yeah Ben, My 04 has around 297,000 miles on it. I have heard of Toyota Yaris and Toyota echo that have reached 500,000 miles. They have the same exact engine as 1st gen XB. :)

I considered that and originally what I was planning, but having never removed the headliner before, I didn't want to go down that road.

So the head unit came out awesome! Just need to figure out how to bolt it down and I followed all the steps for the camera but it's still not working
Is the camera grounded in the hatch? Do you have a good connection at the reverse light? Do you have both power wires wired up on the AV cord?

I believe they need to be installed at both ends. It's been years since the installation. You might want to rewatch that part of the video.

If you are talking about the red power wire, yes, but not easily and I would still cut it open to fish the yellow RCA cord.
