Hey peeps! So we've been getting a lot of comments about how the Entry 17 we referred to is different than the Entry 17 that The Game Theorists talked about in their video. I want to mention that there are two Entry 17s listed in the game files. A "regular" one that fits in with Alphys' Entries throughout True Lab (which we referenced), and the "gaster" one written in wingdings (referenced by GT). Sorry for not mentioning it in the video! Ya'll are quite attentive :)
+Treesicle That's very interesting. This was a great video. I love theories about games in general, but especially about Undertale. There's something about it's no-so-clear background and mysteries that just make it fascinating.
I only feel that you and matpat are the two theorists who actually have passion for what they do... everyone else is milking it at least in my eyes. Love your work man 💜
Another Undertale theory maker uploaded today too! Look up Underlab. They just made a vid also about souls. Asking the question why are human souls so powerful.
Going to college makes me realise these videos are actually educated analyses of games and shows etc... I'm super appreciative of the work behind them!
this is literally the best video ever i love how u came back to undertale even though its been like a year this is why i love treesicle they never leave you hanging and they will answer question you never would have thought of before keep it up treesicle u do great work
oh my god thank you. you guys at treesicle have NO idea how much I appreciate this vid, almost no one talks about the things you guys discussed here. almost no one talks about determination theories, no one talks about the souls much, and no one talks about the effects of the determination. you guys did great, I don't understand how you don't have more subs.
What is a Soul? The soul is the self, the "I" that inhabits the body and acts through it. Without the soul, the body is like a light bulb without electricity, a computer without the software, a space suit with no astronaut inside. With the introduction of the soul, the body acquires life, sight and hearing, thought and speech, intelligence and emotions, will and desire, personality and identity.
Well, GT uses the "its just a theory" to coerce his fanboys to his defence when he is wrong, whilst saying "FACTS" "TRUTH" "SOLVED" in the title and/or thumbnail... So not that one.
Okay, I can't take any gaster theory seriously (or gaster in general), especially the game theory video. Just because the font he uses is called "Wingdings" Wingdings? Chicken wings? Then I start thinking of inappropriate things, and i'll stop talking now.
Undyne is the most determined monster in the game. Sans becomes determined to stop you at first if you kill everybody but he gives up slowly when you keeping loading.
I loved this, really good, but (butt), GameTheorist posted a similar video a few hours ago. Why do not you team up with him for a video - I bet it would be amazing. I am sorry if this comes off as "down playing" your content, which I hope it does not since I love watching your videos, and the quality is great. I just thought it would be nice to watch two of my favorite content creators team up :)
The funny thing is, I almost wrote something similar to this on a Word document half a year ago... Never finished it because I thought no one would care to read it...
in the pacafist run it hints that alphys gives undine "icecream" with determination and that is why she is so determined and why she melts in genocide. It's a pretty well known theory and you could find everything you need to know on it with a little digging
Nope, thats WD Gasters personal entry, the real entry 17, you know, the one by the person actually writing the damn entries, is Alphys's entry 17. Matpat made a mistake using Gasters version, and not the "real" Alphy's... the one about the darkness is clearly from Gaster, from HIS timeline, perhaps a fragment of him that was "shattered"... in other words, one of the many pieces of HIS timeline, found lost deep in the game. The REAL entry 17 from THIS timeline is written by Alphys like all the others.
So "Determination" is the will to push on and do what needs to be done as soon as possible while "Magic" is the urge to stay and enjoy what you have for a while?
Oh yeah for entry 17 if you use a teleport hack and put in a certain coordinate it will teleport u to the room with entry 17. This room can ONLY be accessed by using the teleport hack tho
Holy crap. In the true genocide run, you fight undyne, and as you progress further in the battle, she begins to repeat: "I will not give up" and "I am determined". In the end she melts, then dies. This perfectly fits with the "entry 17" thing. Idk I'm not exactly a theorist like the amazing people at treesicle, but I think this is a pretty solid theory.
**Game Theorists makes a Hello Neighbor theory video** **Treesicle makes a Hello Neighbor theory video shortly after** **Game Theorists makes an Undertale theory video after a couple of months** **Treesicle only makes an Undertale theory video shortly after** Smh
I wonder if Entry 17 was here in the True Lab somewhere but Alphys took it down for some reason... maybe because of Monsters there. Also, I noticed that we, Humans, have more goals, while Toriel makes pie and Asgore waters flowers, etc...
Frisk is very much like a monster in this regard. Frisk only does what we, the player, wants him to do. Frisk doesn't have any determination - that determination comes from us. In turn, our particular determination affects how the game plays out.
is that why the monster sprites never have color I mean they are mostly magic right The that means they have no color because white magic is the most common type in Undertale
Um, did she write all the notes? Cos (And I mean, I haven't played the game - it's a long story, let's just say triggers) is it just me or are some all in lowercase writing, while some aren't? Idk, I just sorta noticed while you were reading. It's probably just a mistake or cos she was freaking out XD
NoArtisticLimitation In the game theory episode that came out earlier today MatPat stated that the lowercase hand writing is Sans. If you want to understand fully it's best if you go watch it. If you want to watch it, it's called :The many sides of Gaster EXPOSED.
(Sigh - my comment won't send for some reason..) I took a look and they did make a lot of sense. These two channels need to collab at some point. EDIT: FINALLY! Also thank you for giving me a heads up. It's great to see people being civil on youtube. :)
Uh, you do realise that was utter BS... right? The reason it was lower case is because its all part of the SAME log, just the next screen, y'know, because you can only fit so much on one screen of text, y'know, how EVERY piece of dialogue is handled in these games. Anyone who ISNT sans or papyrus follows usual rules with text, and with ALL the dialogue in the game, when the screen is filled and goes to the next "page" of text, its handled merely as a continuation of said text. Thinking the text logs was from sans is shear asinine logic. Its Alphys's log, just the continuation of that log... duh. For shame on Matpat for that one, that was just... painful.
Phanicing Hylia - *points at the other comment* Well that's one way to prove my previous point on civil responses. ===== MysteriousStranger50 - As someone who doesn't actually play Undertale (which I already pointed out and mentioned why I don't) all my information comes from youtube, and I was just asking a question "did she write all those notes?" because I wasn't certain. I do not appreciate people "pointing out the obvious" simply because I made an observation and asking a question I wasn't sure of the answer to. That would be like if you saw a video about Teen Titans and you asked why there were several Ravens, so I told you it's OBVIOUS they were in her MIND at the time. All I saw was that they clicked on a log and it started with "no no no no no" in lower case, so I asked a simple question. I never once said that it was Sans, and neither did the other person (they said Matpat stated it, not them), I just said that it would make sense the way it was put in the video. As for dialogue boxes themselves, I know their limitations, I make games (among other things). Usually they are just a few lines long... But they can also be longer or shorter as you please... But that's moving off-topic now. In short, please don't treat people like idiots for their differing opinions and lack of knowledge. It just makes you come across as an argumentative and unapproachable person. I think I've pointed out everything I can think of at this point, so I'm going to leave this comment section now. Maybe you were just having a bad day, or maybe your comment was taken the wrong way to how you meant for it to sound, I'm not sure... But I'd rather not continue this conversion; I've given my opinion, and you've given yours, so I doubt there's much further this conversation can go without ending up in either an argument or an apology, so if it is an apology, I forgive you; if it's not, then I choose not to subject myself to more arguing. Goodbye, and have a nice day. :)
MysteriousStranger50 True. But I still believe that the first few entries are Gaster's, as they seem too aware of the situation, especially if you compare them to the one with Alphys complaining about MTT.
This theory would explain why Sans in the genocide run, even though he seems to try everything to stand in our way, tells the player about his struggle to stay determined during the fight.
Entry number 17 was in the code, and Alphys tried to hide it by turning it inactive. But it stayed in the code. This proves we were meant to check into the code of Undertale.
Really, I think what gives Undertale its power is that its positive message is reinforced by the negative ones wrapped within: plenty of games and stories will tell you that, "you have great power, now go out there and be great!", but how many will remind you of what is not only possible, but probable, if you neglect to carry responsibility with it? You can be the greatest hero the world has ever known, but it is just as easy to become a being consumed by hatred, only considered human so as to not flatter them a monster. People are deeper than we can ever really know, and Undertale brutally depicts the aftermath of exercising judgment on those you deem wicked without hearing their defense. And yet, it feels like for one character in the game, people refuse to understand that last point. Maybe I'm just a bleeding heart, but isn't that the point?
Entry 17 is actually: Dark. Darker. Yet Darker. The shadows cutting deeper. Photon readings negative. This next experiment seems Very Very Interesting. What do you two think?
"That you never asked.", actually, just yesterday I was like "So wait, a SOUL is always in caps, but was it ever explained in the game? LV and EXP were, but SOUL?"
Monsters being composed of magic and how their physical form is closely related to their soul could explain why monsters look different from one another. Humans can easily be different from what they appear like on the surface, however, monsters seem to appear in varying forms and still be classified as the same species when being compared to each other. This could possibly mean monsters manifest into the form that best suits their personality when born. Another note is that monsters seem similar to mages in that they can manipulate matter well, however never have the highest defense stat. What if monsters could take magical, matter manipulating, blasts? Could they resist that well?
Michael Hugh I like it also this could also be why humans have stronger souls since they don't have to stretch their soul so thin to live like monsters have to.
the third one is this next one seems very, very, interesting what do you two think.what this is is the monster seeing alphys's next experiment and shares it with the other amalgamates.
theory you never thought of before is uploaded on the same day as underlabs what makes human souls so powerful (disclaimer i haven't watched ether of theses videos so i have no idea if the have many similarity)
Dude this was awesome and although I can't do patreon because i'm too young, I really think you should keep doing theories. You are amazing at it and it's really fun to watch these videos. =)
I will also point out that like you said, Undyne has much more determination than that of the average monster. That's why she was able to come back to life in the genocide ending, and, even more importantly, melted when you finally struck her down.
A Xenoblade Chronicles story you never knew would be so friggin long. This video alone took up quite a bit of time by itself. Man I should hinge watch more of these.
Entry number 17 by W.D Gaster: "Dark, darker, yet darker the darkness keeps growing the shadows cutting deeper photon readings negative this next experiment seems very very interesting What do you two think?"
I actually took it that the determination requires a large amount of matter to function, or tries to maintain the body it's contained in, so the monsters needed more matter to become stable, and therefore bonded with other monsters so they could have enough matter.
“This dude can’t stop talking about his hat! What a crazy guy, haha! *Seven children die before this game even starts.”* -It’s actually eight if you include Asriel-
There is a room you can only access in the code where a message written in the fount wingdings that translates to about (I don't actually know 100% of it but this is most of it) entry number 17 Dark, darker, yet darker, shadows cutting deeper, photon readings negative this next experiment seems to be very Very Interesting What do you two think?
I would explain the souls like this. Monster souls are a connected system. They work with the body and use magic to keep the physical form together. This is why removing one removes the other. Human souls are separate power containers. Both function independently and the human body requires little to no assistance from their souls to keep the physical form. This is why, after death, as they are independent agents, the will of the soul to keep going is concentrated enough to let it continue existing long after the physical death.
So if magic is the opposite of matter and the monsters can generally be talked out of things... What if the light gray / monster soul type is Flexibility (or something similar), the opposite of Determination? Determined beings being steadfast and flexible beings being more pliable.
Not everything about Determination and Magic was quite explained, Magic in of itself literally means an unknown power, so it can't be personality, which people do have, because it's a known power. Unless of course it's just called something different in Undertale.
A question i have about Undertale is the other child souls. If human souls have determination, therefore they can reset timelines, then they're practically invisible until they give up. Is that what happened...? They just gave up after a while and died?

Well not entirely, but I do agree, and that's probably why they are so popular.
Btw thanks for filling me with determination with your comment.
Well there's Underlab
Yay! Two Undertale theories in a day with MatPat and Treesicle!
Another Undertale theory maker uploaded today too! Look up Underlab. They just made a vid also about souls. Asking the question why are human souls so powerful.
yeah but only one is right

i think this is a great vid. one note though, there is an in game entry 17, you just have to cheat to get to it. it is written in wing dings
Jacob Jett There are two different entry 17s. One is written in Wing Dings and the other is the one shown in the video.
One written by Alphys, the other (original) written by W.D Gaster.
What is a Soul?

Zetsubou02 - _Yes._
which is a better catchphrase. "that's just a theory. a game theory." or "that's the story YOU never knew" which is more catchy.
thegodof bruh 14 but hey, that's just a theory, a theory YOU never knew
Well, GT uses the "its just a theory" to coerce his fanboys to his defence when he is wrong, whilst saying "FACTS" "TRUTH" "SOLVED" in the title and/or thumbnail... So not that one.
I love them both But... Treesicles one is better in my opinion.
Still waiting for my official Treesicle fleshlight.
Heh heh … fleshlight
Okay, I can't take any gaster theory seriously (or gaster in general), especially the game theory video.
Just because the font he uses is called "Wingdings"
Wingdings?
Chicken wings?
Then I start thinking of inappropriate things, and i'll stop talking now.
Pixelated Rainbow my friend says that!!!!!!!!!
Pixelated Rainbow beware the man who speaks in hands
Those hands must be good in be--

+Zanman Wing Ding Chicken wing
Beware the man who speaks in handjobs.
the second sentence is shadows cutting deeper, photon readings negative.what this means is the melting that occurs is unstoppable
"Your SOUL is the culmination of your very being!" -Flowey
And that explains everything.
Undyne is the most determined monster in the game. Sans becomes determined to stop you at first if you kill everybody but he gives up slowly when you keeping loading.
I thought entry17 was written in wing dings and it said something different
beastonthehunt Ya I wonder why it is different I the text dump
there must be two entry17's
beastonthehunt There are 2 one is gasters and the other is alphys
there are 2
EnderSlime oh

Hey treesicle could you make a Sly Cooper The Story You Never Knew
in the pacafist run it hints that alphys gives undine "icecream" with determination and that is why she is so determined and why she melts in genocide. It's a pretty well known theory and you could find everything you need to know on it with a little digging
It's guaranteed that entry number 17 is Dark, Darker, Yet Darker, Shadows cutting deep or something in "room 256" i think
good theory though

Holy crap. In the true genocide run, you fight undyne, and as you progress further in the battle, she begins to repeat: "I will not give up" and "I am determined". In the end she melts, then dies. is that why the monster sprites never have color I mean they are mostly magic right

Treesicle He may be dumb but he is such a sweet and wonderful character >:(

+Lunatic89097 thank YOU!
My version of ENTRY NUMBER 17 (about sixbones): Entry number 17...No no no..What have I done? I have to get out of here...It's coming...
Yummy Spagetti
"Someones open the door"
SANS!!!! SOMEBODY TOUCHED MAH SPAGET
Entry 17 is actually:
Dark.
Darker.
Yet Darker.
The shadows cutting deeper.
Photon readings negative.
This next experiment seems
Very
Very
Interesting.
What do you two think?
When the static red happened i yelled "GOD, GASTER. STOP MESSING WITH THE SCREEN AGAIN DO IT TO UNDERLAB ONLY."
A soul is the very culmination of your being
According to flowey the flower
"That you never asked.", actually, just yesterday I was like "So wait, a SOUL is always in caps, but was it ever explained in the game? LV and EXP were, but SOUL?"
I am scared now of Undertale and I just before this theory watched matpats theory on Undertale about gaster and now I am scared.
Never played Undertale and know nothing about it but after the first 2-3 minutes I want to play it now.
A soul is a body formed being from the inside. As it's called a "ghost" It's used to show something that's "good" Or something special in a way.
I love how everyone's getting back into undertale
Monsters being composed of magic and how their physical form is closely related to their soul could explain why monsters look different from one another. Humans can easily be different from what they appear like on the surface, however, monsters seem to appear in varying forms and still be classified as the same species when being compared to each other. This could possibly mean monsters manifest into the form that best suits their personality when born.
Another note is that monsters seem similar to mages in that they can manipulate matter well, however never have the highest defense stat. What if monsters could take magical, matter manipulating, blasts? Could they resist that well?
Michael Hugh I like it also this could also be why humans have stronger souls since they don't have to stretch their soul so thin to live like monsters have to.
so that part where Undying melts did Alphys inject determination in to her but she was the only one how made it or...
the third one is this next one seems very, very, interesting what do you two think.what this is is the monster seeing alphys's next experiment and shares it with the other amalgamates.
What if Alphys extracted "Magic" from a monster, and but it inside a dying human...?
I always wondered how did all the other souls that fell down to the underground. Did not die. (Except determination )
Game Theory makes undertale video
=
Treesicle makes undertaking video
theory you never thought of before is uploaded on the same day as underlabs what makes human souls so powerful (disclaimer i haven't watched ether of theses videos so i have no idea if the have many similarity)
Bruh if you teleport yourself to a specific room you will see the REAL entry 17 written in wing dings
Glad someone could explain all of this. Good job man.
Dude this was awesome and although I can't do patreon because i'm too young, I really think you should keep doing theories. You are amazing at it and it's really fun to watch these videos. =)
WHAT ABOUT THE GASTER ENTRY NUMBER SEVENTEEN Entry17:Darker yet darker this next experiment seems... very very interesting. What do you two think?
I will also point out that like you said, Undyne has much more determination than that of the average monster. That's why she was able to come back to life in the genocide ending, and, even more importantly, melted when you finally struck her down.
A Xenoblade Chronicles story you never knew would be so friggin long. This video alone took up quite a bit of time by itself. Man I should hinge watch more of these.
Entry number 17 by W.D Gaster:
"Dark, darker, yet darker
the darkness keeps growing
the shadows cutting deeper
photon readings negative
this next experiment
seems
very
very
interesting
What do you two think?"
It's like, "war always found men." I don't know where that quote came from. XD
I saw "Snowy" and just cried. I cried myself to sleep. That was so sad.:(
I love how I just watched Gametheory part 2 of WD Gaster mentioning about the lab and entry 17 and here it is again :) I love these videos!
Maybe it's called Snowdon library because it reveals hidden secrets...
I wonder sometimes if Toby Fox and Scott Cawthon actually intended to make their games as deep as they are
I actually took it that the determination requires a large amount of matter to function, or tries to maintain the body it's contained in, so the monsters needed more matter to become stable, and therefore bonded with other monsters so they could have enough matter.
“This dude can’t stop talking about his hat! What a crazy guy, haha! *Seven children die before this game even starts.”*
-It’s actually eight if you include Asriel-
There is a room you can only access in the code where a message written in the fount wingdings that translates to about (I don't actually know 100% of it but this is most of it) entry number 17
Dark, darker, yet darker, shadows cutting deeper, photon readings negative this next experiment seems to be very
Very
Interesting
What do you two think?
Gaster's entry 17 is irrelevant to the topic in the video
But I thought that entry 17 was written in wing dings and buried deep in the game files...
I thought the entry 17 was that WD gaster "Dark yet Darker" thing
Does this mean that Papyrus is more like Undying? More like a human? He has a great level of DETERMINATION! For making spageti and puzzles :D
These videos are amazing.
And by the way, loved the actual Tangent Line shown on screen and the LATIN PHRASE, SUM AMANS LATINUM.
if a monster absorbs a human soul, will it just be both magic and determination, or a new type of force?
I would explain the souls like this.
Monster souls are a connected system. They work with the body and use magic to keep the physical form together. This is why removing one removes the other.
Human souls are separate power containers. Both function independently and the human body requires little to no assistance from their souls to keep the physical form. This is why, after death, as they are independent agents, the will of the soul to keep going is concentrated enough to let it continue existing long after the physical death.
"Since when did this channel become Game Theory?"
"Oh wait."
"A while ago."
*nostalgia of the Minecraft video*
