- UNDERTALE 2 IS HERE! Well...not exactly. The creator of Undertale, Toby Fox, is back with a new game: DELTARUNE! Deltarune is the spiritual successor to Undertale, but not in actual lore. We play as a character that looks like Chara, but is actually named Kris, and we meet plenty of characters along the way, such as Susie and Lancer, but we also see Goat Mom (Toriel), Asgore, Sans, Alphys, Undyne, and others! Though a lot of them have different names. But if this story takes place in a different universe, what does it all mean? Is it a different timeline to Undertale? Or is it just a game with similar characters and graphics? All we know for sure is that there's more to this game than meets the eye. The reason Suzie ate the chalk is because she isn't being fed enough at home. She says the player has a good mom (implying she doesn't) and later says that all she had for breakfast was chalk. Suzie's rough personality probably comes from her awful homelife.

I think its just a way to make the actual player understand that he's not in control anymore.
Remember that Noelle (the deer girl) and her father described Kris as a prankster and asocial boy. The father also states that he changed lately. I think the change happened when he got the heart, when we, as player, make him talk with others. For a moment, Kris was someone else, someone we wanted him to be. Then he had enough of it, threw us in a cage and came back to it former self. Or maybe a worst self, being frustrated by our control over him.

I think that WE the player took over Kris. That’s why we’re acting so strange, then either he rejects us at the end and was always an antisocial evil doer, or the part Chara that we brought over with us from Undertale takes a control again
By talking to several characters we do know about Kris that they are mischievous, like to prank people, really care about Asriel, love chocolate and can eat whole Goat mom's pie, which is impressive in my opinion.

In all the Suzie “bad homelife”/“is homeless” theories springing from the chalk and and people trying to counter it by saying Suzie’s eating habits are just a joke, I notice no one is bringing up the Alphys milk scene. Remember how she says she puts it out for a cat, but then admits she’s never really seen whose been taking what she’s been putting out and just assumed it was a cat?

Everyone in the overworld also comments about how different Kris is acting. Especially if you visit Noelle's father, and then talk to her at the gate. Clearly Kris is being possessed by the player, and I think Kris didn't... want to be possessed. Obviously. I was gonna suggest that Kris was Chara's official/canon name, but I do have to consider that UNDERTALE considered Chara the "true name." So instead, Chara may have been inhabiting Kris first, because they ALSO were not allowed to choose who they were in this world.
Next chapter, do you think we might try to communicate with Susie while in the SOUL CAGE(tm) ?
Maybe Kris is upset they can't make choices, so there doing whatever it takes to make something change.
Maybe it's just a game with a player moving a character and a guy who conveniently wrote a story about it.

I belive that kriss is some kind of socyopath, but us, the player took control of him with our soul, and make him act as us.
When he takes off our soul, he refusses us, and becomes the real kriss (the knife and the smile could be that, Kriss is "a bad" kid)
I won't elaborate beacause i can barely speak English, but that is my theory: We control Kriss by force, he free himself, and becomes the socyopath he always has been.

The control variable in this instance is a world in which the Player's choice does not change the outcome of the story. As in there have been two groups/experiments, one with the control (Deltarune) and one without the control (Undertale). This, of course, implies that Player choice is not what Gaster is measuring, but instead something that is affected by Player choice.

Ralsei has a lot of secrets. From the story, all we would have to do is extinguish his fountain instead of The King's, he tells us we can check his castle (and by extension his fountain) out later, but closes the door behind the party. There are four royal houses, one for each suit. Ralsei is supposedly prince of hearts, but when you find the kings, he purposely stays away from the cage, and looks nothing like the King of Hearts, being a completely different species. Ralsei is unlike any other creature in the Dark World, being a Boss Monster by race, as revealed by the ending. A monster. Not a Darkener. I think the prince from the dark in the prophecy is actually Lancer, a verified prince of the dark. I don't think Ralsei is evil, just that there is a lot he is hiding.
To be fair, closing Ralsei’s fountain would only be a short-term situation because the King (or rather, the Knight) could just open up more, so closing the fountain in Ralsei’s castle wouldn’t stop more fountains from being set up. Also, Ralsei doesn’t call himself the prince of hearts, just the prince of darkness, and he has a colored portrait during his dialogue like the other Darkners. However, Ralsei is clearly hiding something to an extent. During the prison sequences with Susie, after the player’s view is directed back to Kris and Ralsei after Susie attacks Lancer, Ralsei says “...so that’s why, OK, Kris?” Which indicates Ralsei had a conversation with Kris while we weren’t watching.
Angelic Creeper that’s all true, but closing The King’s fountain doesn’t stop the Knight making another fountain either.
I too think Lancer is the Prince of Dark, not Ralsei. What that means about Ralsei remains to be seen, however. Is he a darkner? a lightner? a monster? Asriel? someone else who just happens to have a name that's an anagram of asriel and who looks like him?

pbtenchi As far as Ralsei knows, the King is responsible for opening the fountains, but doesn’t seem to be aware of the existence of the Knight, so it’s possible that Ralsei, in his mind, thought that sealing the King’s fountain would stop it, but didn’t know that the King himself was not the one opening up the fountains. It’s also not far-fetched to think that Ralsei’s fountain is the natural dark fountain, and sealing the natural one could lead to problems as well as extra fountains would.
Remember in Undertale, Asriel is the prince of the underground. In Deltarune, Ralsei is the prince of darkness. They're both look very similar and their name is an anagram of each other, just like the name of both games.

Oh how I wish this hapened
Interesting video, but I found myself thinking. Why would Toby make a game about the importance of choices in our lives and the impact it puts on others, then make a game that has the exact opposite message? To me it makes more sense that Deltarune is is also a game about choice.
However, unlike Undertale it doesn't make the power of your choices as obvious or as welcome. For example, there are technically two ways Chapter 1 of Deltarune can end. One, the king gets overthrown by Lancer and the rest of the royal subjects(who were the enemies). The darkiners' faith in the lighteners is restored in this ending. Which in turn erodes the support for not only the king, but also the "Knight" the king talks about during his fight.
This "Knight" likely convinced several leaders and possibly even those under the sovereignty of those leaders that the lightners had abandoned them and hated them. Thus the lighteners did not deserve the darkiners compassion, but instead deserved their hatred. However, by ACTing and being kind to the enemies; they see that the things the King and by proxy the Knight told them were untrue. Basically, by being kind to the enemies and making the choice to be good; you restored their faith in being good people; who wont just bow to whatever their leaders say and will instead make their own choices about how they think and feel.
If you attack them and dont show them kindness however, the ending is slightly different. Ralsei just puts the king to sleep and the kings subjects try to break through the throne room door and attack you. You dont teach them that the king and the Knight were wrong, you teach them that those two were right. You prove that lightners are the bad guys.
Yes, both of the endings are similar, but they are so different at the same time. The difference is just really subtle and you have to think about it. In my opinion, this isnt a game about how choice doesnt matter. Instead, I think its a game about how your choices matter regardless of what other people tell you and that no matter what you should think for yourself. The game tells you from the very beginning that your choices mean nothing, but thats not the case. How subtly yet vastly different the two endings to the game are just prove that.
I think if anything Treesicle
is feeding into the lie of this game, that your choices dont matter. Toby is trying to teach us that are choices still mean something even when everyone is telling us that they dont. Its like a test, a test to see who will still do what they believe in. If they will still do whats right and what their heart tells them to do, or if they will throw all that to the side and conform to the notion that their choices dont matter. Just because the game or even its creator says so.
Basically, Deltarune is a game about choice and possibly even free thought/free thinking. Similar to Undertale. However, unlike Undertale, the game is trying to get you to believe your choices dont matter. Toby made the game this way to see if players will still think for themselves and try and change the world, even when most evidence says they cant; or if they will just bow thier heads and accept that they cant change anything, just because everyone else is telling them that.
Thats just my two cents, if you read this far thanks. I doubt more than 3 people will read this, but it was still fun to write lol.
This is really awesome, firstly. And just adding onto it, I don't have exact quotes and things since I've only watched playthroughs of both games and haven't played them myself, but Undertale had this meta element which almost commented on the way you the player chose to play the game. Not on the character choosing to spare everyone or kill everyone, but you choosing to spare or kill, and doing it over and over and over with infinite resets of the world. Deltarune has a similar element, from what I've seen, of almost testing the player. When they are being repeatedly told that their choices don't matter, will they give up or still do what they think is right, even if it doesn't alter the outcome at the end? Basically, if we could get away with doing terrible things with no consequences, would we? It's still a game about choice, really, and about what is driving the choices you make. If your choices in Deltarune really won't alter the outcome in the slightest, then every choice you make will be driven by you, your morals or what you think will be most interesting or whatever drives you, to pacifist or genocide or somewhere inbetween - not by the ending you want to get.

2. Destiny
In Undertale, we have our freedom of choice. We can do what we want, choose whatever ending we want, and even go back again if we still aren't satisfied.
In Deltarune, probably describes destiny. It's our fate. Everything's planned for us. There's nothing we can do regardless of our choices.
Or maybe it's telling US that we're not part of their world. That we're NOT supposed to be in control.
I dunno. Toby just keeps spilling gasoline over the fire. Maybe he'll blast something even more unexpected.
I think Aira was closer than the OC, at least from my perspective. The endings were most certainly the same, it’s impossible to argue that. I forget who it was, but another TH-camr brought up the idea that, rather than the endings, it’s the details that change.
As soon as you start the game, your fate is decided, start to finish, you cannot determine where the checkpoints will be or how they play out. But, what you do in between can vary greatly. Will we take the reality-bending egg from the stranger behind the tree? Will we actively spare everyone we can from Susie’s onslaught? Will we play a game with Jevil and learn a bit more about the span of things? Will we satiate the hunger for fluffy boys within us all by hugging Ralsei? Will we talk to *the original star?* That’s at most a quarter of what you can do between point A and B, not even getting into the overworld stuff. And, while they may not change our destiny, they enrich our experience. Sure, we may lose it all after we get back to the light (minus the egg, the ball of junk, and your pencil), but their parts were played as we took a back seat.
There’s most definitely freedom of choice, but not of fate. In the end, you fulfilled the prophecy, however, the story we just took part in was the most unclear part of the game. Ralsei never got a people to rule, Lancer (who may or may not be the actual dark prince) is never explored upon, other than his new reign as king and his father. Yet, somehow, he’s still the one we know the most about. Who is Susie, Ralsei, and even Kris? Sure, we learn a good amount about Kris in the town, but absolutely zero of it was exhibited from start to end of the game. The characters have no character, the plot has no story, and, according to Jevil - the only remote large-scale threat in the game other than ourselves(?) - there are entities much bigger and influential than any of those in the chapter, including himself, the one who’s locked out of the prison we inhabit. Meanwhile, we, a lightner meant to save the world, are ironically left in the dark. Who is the Knight, the one who masterminded all this. Better yet, where is he? And who’s Knight was he? We’ve got a Jester, a Court Mage, and a Knight, and tellings of a Queen. All of whom play major parts in the lore. Yet, where are they in the game? Well, the mage is a shopkeep and the jester is an extremely missable boss. Then there’s another layer: Who made Jevil go mad, giving him his power, even further behind all this? There’s so much there that we just can’t get to. Perfect use of “So close yet so far.” Hell, I don’t even know if this Knight and Jevil share any sort of history, but it makes too much sense with what we’re given, as little as it is.
I mean, seriously, look, I went on a rant for half the paragraph on concepts that are completely from my head, most of which makes absolutely no sense if you don’t know about the secret boss in the card castle. That’s just how much there is to work with. And again, this is only the lack of information on the prophecy-portion I’m talking about. I don’t even want to get started on the overworld shit because it’s almost entirely guesswork, from our dad’s flowers to the (supposed) Ghaster egg, to its overall existence.
It’s not our place in the game to choose. Where Undertale may’ve been improv, Deltarune is a set script. Sure, there may be ad lib here and there, but inevitably we can not and should not change said script. It’s not within our power, whether or not we want to. It’s not something to be analyzed and broken down from the inside, nor deconstructed. It’s to be played to the best of your ability. And if you play Undertale before this, everything is notably easier sans the Jevil fight. He was the only fight I had to use strategy and items on, rather than ACTing and immediately sparing with Ralsei. It’s meant to be a walk in the park, how I see it. You’re not supposed to lose, and you end as the hero no matter what, whether or not you’re liked/appreciated. You seal the second geyser, you return to your world with a new-found friendship, and you’re not meant to question what happened. The missing elements are to be forgotten, because, in the end, you saved the world. Don’t mind the fact that the true antagonist never showed up. Or that there were four protagonists rather than three. That secret prison holding the man who “just wants to play a game?” Just ignore it and carry on up the castle to fight King, the final boss. What’s it matter. You won. Now carry on being a spectator, while your body is without a soul, and your questions are without answers.
I probably made a bunch of mistakes during this, and if so, please feel free to point them out. But this is how I feel about the game, in a nutshell. There’s more, but I can’t include it without making this ten times longer and four times harder to read.

I mean yes the main line story is very easy to get, but we all want to know: the hell does it have to do with undertale?! And there shall be something (for the name, the graphics, the characters etc.), but otherwhise there is not much!

If you go into the bathroom you can flush the toliet. (I’m still questioning why that’s the first choice in the game though.)
haha I did it 100 times, the outcomes are beautiful. I feel like an average player would only do it to get Toriel's reaction twice or so, but I kept going until the last one with my brother, and after about 10 tries we stopped so it was PROBABLY the last one
You can also choose to go back to sleep in the beginning which skips the whole school segment and takes you straight to the dark world.

Jack Paddock My only protest is that Kris is clearly a dick if you talk to the people around town, which is where the “Kris is Chara” theories come from. I don’t see where you see any potential for good in the Kris that existed before we, the player came and took over their body and over-wrote their save.

No. Kris is the main character. At the beginning, Ralsei is the ‘pacifist’ route - quiet, not usually the centre of attention. Meanwhile Susie is the ‘genocide’ route, and you, Kris, are the neutral. You decide what the party does, and whether you’re nice to the party members or not.

The statement, 'We don't know anything about Kris' is untrue. After you leave the closet, you can go around town and talk to people. And there, a bunch of people talk about your family, how things changed after some incident, which likely was a divorce (based on how many of the events your family no longer partake in were things the whole family did, and how the 'event' is usually talked in a negative connotation, and Asgore has his own bed in the attic of the flower shop). But the most important thing, was when you visit the reindeer family in the hospital. They talk about how you're acting strangely. More sociable. Like everything you're doing is different. It may not paint a detailed picture, but for me at least, it spoke that everything you're doing as Kris, is abnormal. The emptiness of his room vs the fullness of his brother's, along with the way everyone in town talks about Asriel tells us at least how Kris lives in the shadow of Asriel. How we can't choose what our character looks like, blood type, likes or dislikes, tells us from the very beginning Kris was his own person, his own character. I'm sorry if I'm going off, but I feel like Deltarune did a good, subtle job, of building Kris's character, so when revealed at the end Kris may be some Chara-esque being, it wasn't totally out of left field. Because the character I felt Deltarune was telling me Kris was, was an asocial loner with little attachments to the people around them. Maybe I'm wrong, and I'm misreading things, but I know at least there was some work put forth to show that Kris was not an empty slate with no history to him.

Also, another thing, to add to the little choice everyone had, I feel like what hammered home that theme for me was the prophecy and Susie. The prophecy said that three main characters would be heroes. Susie actively tries to be anything but a Hero, but by the end of the game, that's what she becomes. Someone strong, but willing to change, and unwilling to kill someone, no matter how evil they were. Even though her transformation was positive, ultimately, she had as little choice in who she became as you, the player.
Kris also hide under Reindeer girl, I do not remember her name, she is easily scared, to scare her when she was looking for humans under the bed, put ketchup on their hands telling her it is real blood. They seems to really care about Asriel because they used to walk to diner alone after that unknown accident, Asriel would buy them hot chocolate and they would draw on windows with fingers together, and when drink hot chocolate it make them feel nostalgic. Also, Asriel carried them to school one or more times.
At the end of the geno route, Chara says that you should "erase this pointless world and move on to the next. The next world isn't another Undertale timeline, IT IS THE DELTARUNE TIMELINE!
When you first save the game you replace Kris save file with the name you chose for yourself at the beginning of the game
Nicholas Compton actually by “world” she meant all of the timelines which it is implied there is a infinite number of them. Frisk openly manipulates and creates them with the “save”. So her being able to affect this parallel universe isn’t assuming too much.

The reindeer girl's name is Noelle. Also I interpreted Kris hiding under the girl's bed and puting ketchup on their arms and telling the girl it's blood as Kris possibly being a prankster and maybe even liking Noelle in some way. That was until I saw the ending and realized that there might have been something more sinister. More so that the ketchup might have actually been blood. (Though I prefer to think that it was all Kris liking Noelle and being a prankster.)
That's what you don't understand about the game... You never kill an enemy in this game, every enemy flees whenever you "kill" it and that's why you never get any xp and even the weird red coin boss with the crown is invincible as you can deal 600 per 3 turns and he heals 700. The game has one ending because there is no choices, even if you chose to attack, your attacks are meaningless and don't cause the death of any creature.

Wouldn’t it be a kicker if all throughout the four chapters, none of our choices change/effect the outcome, but all along, they are, but we don’t know it until the last chapter/it’s too late.
Again, that totally contradicts what Toby said, but I mean, we do have some pull in this ‘universe.’ Like the ax color, our gang’s name, and most importantly, we are the leader and commander of our squad (fully when Susie joins us for good).

I just noticed that while you are in overworld, when you press C you get the good old Undertale menu. But when you are in Underground(or whatever that no light place is) you get a new menu after pressing C. Also when you save, it has the name you gave to the creator on the save file, and we overwrite the save file of Kris.
Also,when we fall down in the supply closet our outfit changes .
When we go back to Overworld all our items are "lost".

If you flush the toilet a lot toriel asks if they flushed a bathbomb in the toilet again, we didn't have a choice when a LITTERAL TEENAGER(assumed teen) is holding hands with his mom to go to school, we learn they are always quiet(by a lot of charachters actually) and Kris...licks a book. In the hospital we can't play the piano, but the nurse explains how we are usually really good at it. To me that shows a very wierd quirky kid. And I love it.

In the beginning, the Font is referenced in the code by 666, the same that Windings was in Undertale. Coupled with the fact that the Deltarune site has been up since 2015 (Waybackmachine) littered with secred Windgins messages, its possible the intro text starts off as Gaster speak (the scene is even called Gonermaker internally) but when the effect around the text and the BG vanishes THAT is Chara taking over.

you forgot one very important fact: *you can move the heart during the ending, implying that this story is more of an opposite, where instead of the player being able to force the main character to murder others OR spare them...*
*In this game, you are trying to stop that main character from becoming evil in the first place, there's many hints like when you flush the toilet multiple times, Toriel asks if you put a bathbomb in the toilet again* Notice that she says Again??? *and the other mentions talk about how your character was an anti social weirdo but seems to have changed*
I feel this is a very important idea to look into
The idea that the main character supposed to be a good person in undertale but the thing that possessed the main character could end up allowing Chara to emerge from your evil actions (remember the name selection in Undertale, the name you select first is supposed to be Chara however if you go pacifist it is revealed that the person you're controlling is Frisk)
But in DeltaRune you are already deciding on doing good, where even if you try to fight and try to end the lives of others, its literally impossible, But your character on the other hand... Your character is evil and whatever is possessing the character (the player) is trying to force this evil character away from doing bad things...
Whether or not it means there's only 1 ending to all of this or that your choices don't really matter, i feel is probably wrong, i do think that the opening statement about your choices not mattering at all, might be the same as the opening of Undertale in which Flowey lies to you about kill or be killed, etc.
So again i think a lot of people are missing some VERY important details in their theories.

The single instance of when your choice does matter proves unequivocally that Choice does matter it may just be a very small thing but it is in fact there the choice truly exists
I feel what is likely to happen is that the choices you make will stack up to the end
Things like in the Normal world Susie Picking up on Chara due to him acting so differently from the player Or Sans Making friends with YOU and not Chara in the over world
There are also some interesting tidbits to make note of like how Ralsei was Sealed behind a large door alone refers to himself as a prince of darkness with no subjects and when he goes down he vanishes completely it's very likly Ralsei isn't actually a good person using everything he has to garner love from the player and potentially Kris
It's also possible that the other world was just your subconscious and Ralsei was Chara taking the form of a version of kris's reliable older brother Whispering sweet words into Kris's ears trying to get close and stay close
Another interesting fact is that you end up in the other world even if you just go back to bed when you wake up

A lot of times, the reason why people eat chalk is due to a disorder called "Pika". This is caused when the body is basically starved of nutrients due to some reason or another, giving them the urge to eat inedible (usually mineral like substances) sources, such as chalk, dirt, sand, and even rocks. My younger cousin had Pika, and we'd often catch him sitting under a small shed trying to eat the dirt there ^^'

It also depends on what you're wanting to consume, there are some things that are fine and others that are not. Occasionally I'll get it where I crave ice, the only negative effect ice can have is on your teeth and even then it's minimal. The bigger problem is when you start to crave and eat other things like gravel or sand. There's even a woman who eats Comet (a household cleaner). If it ever gets to the point of eating something that's clearly detrimental to your health (rocks, comet, plastics or clay) you need to see a medical professional right away.

In the beginning, when you inspect the cage, it says it is beaten up, "Like it's been in a fight before.'' (something like that) so perhaps Toby is suggesting that this has happened before?
I personally like to believe that this is the first time it has happened. And Kris becoming a malfestation of Chara is the product of the Legend Ralsei told them wasn't properly fulfilled, instead of banishing the Dark Fountain together, Kris themself absorbing it into their body, and losing control after falling asleep, turning into Chara.
It said It has been in a lot of crashes. But. I guess it kinda crashed when the heart got thrown in.
this is really interesting, because something undertale does is that it makes you question basic game mechanics, like fighting enemies and killing them. it makes you feel bad for killing enemies in games. so maybe deltarune will be similar to undertale in the whole questioning basic game mechanics part of things. like what if the character you controlled in a game didn’t want to be controlled. what if you’re controlling them against their will.
it’s the only explanation i can come up with to why kris would rip the red heart out of their chest. they’re being forced to be controlled.

I feel like kris being possessed is more likely, plus the towns people make it sound like she’s usually a prankster but nothing evil. Then again, the main character looks way too much like Chara in the over world... but looks more frisk in the dark world.
I think Kris is a reincarnation of Chara or something, since Chara wasn’t usually murdering people but pulling pranks. I mean, she lived with the Dremurrs for a long time without real negative attention, and she comes across as sociopath but not as crazy as a psychopath or totally insane person. My favorite theory is that she was somehow able to live on or possess someone else in this universe, and somehow Gaster is involved, maybe trying to control her by possessing her with the player’s mind. A lot of the Kris’s depiction and actions kind of support this. Doesn’t explain everything though... past of this universe and Gaster’s involvement is hard to pinpoint.
It’s strange that we are told nearly nothing about this universe’s past though, maybe in this one Chara is just named Kris instead and she never died. And this story is just a different version where this is a parallel to Undertale’s Asriel and Chara childhood story but nobody died young. Chara+Asriel= Chairiel....oh shit the chair is from the Undertale universe!

Isn't it possible that Deltarune is a post genocide AU of Undertale? The ending clearly makes a reference to Chara and as far as I know no canon ending of Undertale has been established it's just been universally accepted that the Pacifist ending is. Toby says if everyone in YOUR world is happy that remains the same he never says that canonically everyone is, so maybe Deltarune is the next world Chara was talking about...If that's the case then the Genocide ending is the only one that Toby himself has recognized as Undertale's ending

I think the way Toby made Susie disobey us was to represent what was happening to Kris. When we start Delta rune we control Kris. He does what ever we would tell him to. Quick question just in case someone is listening... who is the Knight, exactly? Are they someone unbeknownst in the story outside influencing the King? Or are they in the game as someone I missed over my head? Also, there has yet to be much mention of a Queen for each 'suite' besides a vague mention by Jevil... it really seems to be subtly yet strongly building up to the next chapter.
Also, a quick theory on the whole 'ending.' I believe that whatever entity revealed itself what everyone believes is Chara, is not in fact her per say. Nor do I believe the entity existed in Kris' lifetime at all. I believe that when Kris left through the Dark Fountain back to the overworld, the prophecy wasn't properly fulfilled, suggesting greatly that the three champions would dispell the fountain then restore balance. Ralsei wasn't present when they stood before the fountain, and I doubt Susie would know anything about dispelling... yet, in the end, Kris and Susie did just that. Kris walked into the fountain with Susie behind her, then returned home... now, the big question is that makes me believe this theory is true... what if the darkness wasn't dispelled, but absorbed by the first to walk through it? Such darkness that would imbalance a Lightener into... Chaos.
Note, I haven't watched the whole video yet, so if my questions are answered here, sorry for being impatient with my theories!

You're the first one I've seen to reference Jevil's comments; I was thinking the exact same thing! It's an incredibly important piece of lore, which more or less directly foreshadows the ending of Chapter 1. While Chara is heavily alluded to, I don't think they actually play a role in this game. I think we'll find out much more about the Knight in the following chapters, because you're right, we know next to nothing about them aside from the fact that they caused the King to change (and possibly Jevil as well).

Another one being, I don't believe Ralsei even is a 'Prince of Darkness' or even a darkerner... I mean, we don't know enough about Darkners in the first place to judge, but Ralsei appears more so as a Boss Monster than anything else... perhaps Ralsei lied, for whatever reason we may figure out later on, and to what extent? Maybe he's a she, and trying to divert possible suspicion around others about something we don't even know yet, maybe she's evil... hopefully not, though, or maybe just trying to protect her/his new friends with something potentially worse than imbalance of light and dark... maybe even worse than Chara... though I doubt Ralsei even knows about them. And as in worse, I don't mean Gaster... he's gonna be in the spotlight soon, but personally, I wouldn't mind another 'deep' evil on par with those two, potentially...

Remember when you are close to the fountain, the game tells you that you are feeling strange, then your soul glows in the fountain, which turns white, and you leave the dark world.
Now then, the only thing I can picture based on your theory is that whichever darkness Kris absorbed is now controlling him, hence why he repels the red soul

Noticeably, Kris and Susie had their weapons mysteriously appear, as Susie explains by stating she has no idea where the ax came from.

As far as analysis goes, this is a bit monocolored I think. While the fact that one's choices don't matter (or, specifically, the player's choices) is a very upfront theme, to the extent it's explicitly laid out in the dialogue several times, it certainly isn't the sum total of the story.
The characters do in fact make choices; Suzie and Lancer grow as people and overthrow the king instead of killing him or letting him kill their friends. Ralsei explicitly follows a fated prophecy to the letter, but also feels the journey is just as important as the end. While Kris can get to the fountain by attacking constantly or by finding ways to please everyone, the difference manifests in how they affect those around them, either becoming beloved by the Darkners or needing to flee from them.
Likewise, Kris isn't _quite_ a cipher either. For what the video considers a flat "vessel", many personality details actually are assigned: Kris is repeatedly called out as "quiet", ascribed motivations by others constantly, has a number of (frankly meanspirited) pranks of theirs called out in dialogue with the other characters, has an established history with a family (from which they are, to some extent or another, estranged), and in particular seems to have a complex history with their brother, whom nobody in town ever shuts up about. They even have opinions contrary to the player's desires, as shown by the flavor text when you try to drop the "ball of junk" item in the real world.
What this means to _me_ , is that this game is about something a bit more sinister than if your choices "matter". It interrogates the idea of having a player avatar in the first place. If it's okay to supersede the will and integrity of someone else because you think you could improve things, or do things better than they can. Is it alright to force Kris to befriend everyone in the Dark World, if it makes them happy? Or are they entitled to make their own choices?
Funnily enough, I don't think the answer to that question is going to be laid out as cut and dry, either. Suzie learning to ACT, to accept the help of others and willingly restricting her own freedom, was a part of her development as a character. Learning to trust is, to some degree, always going to involve giving up some autonomy.
Ultimately, I think this will be a game about the interplay between freedom and happiness, about trying to modulate a medium between letting people hurt themselves, and stopping them from having any personal autonomy. While we as a player can help the characters in the story, I think ultimately we'll be forced to leave them to their own devices and to come to their own conclusions. And, ultimately, I think the characters themselves will be the ones to choose the ending of the story. There's only one true ending, after all.
This is a little separate so I wanted to address it in a different comment, but my theory also interacts with a few other unaddressed Chekov's Guns in the narrative, like the sudden religious imagery and traditional savior narrative of the Delta Rune legend. Jevil is the one character who mentions and is related to "hell", and is expressly linked with the idea of "freedom". Naturally, this connects the idea of the religious themes with that of bondage or incarceration; and thinking of an all-powerful force who exists to save the faithful, it's easy to make the jump that the Player may be synonymous with the force of "God" in this universe.
Gaster also fits in here somewhere, given that he's an explicitly omniscient split up across time and space without a physical form. Not totally unlike the player, I might note, who also can only interact with the world through a 'vessel'.

Let’s take a look at Kris’s life, shall we? A loving family who ADOPTED them, a MINORITY in the world of monsters, their parents got DIVORCED, their brother LEFT, they are QUIET, in school NO ONE wants them and they are TEASED, they are heckled by a BULLY, they are ALONE.
The very first time they get a genuine friend by some starvation-induced coma, it’s the very first time they get to express themselves. Kris gets their brother figure back and they are so close it’s heartbreaking. Susie gets her anger of home life out, but finally understands that hurting people is bad. And after all that, Kris is left alone, again. NOBODY CAME when they never came back from the closet, Toriel chose not to take the two minutes it would’ve taken to pick them up, opting to spend the hour to grade papers and then read when she knows they have a history of troublemaking (prank calls, bath bombing the toilet, fake ketchup blood). Their schoolmates were teasingly worried they got murdered and didn’t go out of their way for them.
Kris is a very disturbed and BROKEN child. One I fear wants to destroy every one and everything.

Personally, I think this is a really great take on the lesson of Deltarune. Toby was always the one for hidden themes and this one makes a lot of sense. That soul at the end isn't Kris', but ours. That ending moment, when we move in that cage, we are now fully disembodied from Kris, our vessel. Additionally, from what we hear from their neighbours, Kris didn't seem like a good kid. And yet, we, the player befriended Ralsei and Susie, spared, acted and fought, most likely to Kris' discontent. We decided to invade their life by using them as a vessel. While in other games, we are the DOMINANCE, having full control over our vessel, Deltarune proves to us that you can't always bend choices your way to get what you want(in undertale, whether that be Pacifist, Neutral or Genocide), because we are not always the ones IN CONTROL.
We have to remember this relates to Undertale because in the Genocide Run, we are the ones that make Chara believe that mass murder is the right way. We were the one that brought this maniac into their personality. "At first I was so confused."
However, eventually our actions would get the better of us, and we wouldn't be in control anymore. Because no one can choose who they are in this world.
Fun fact: I've never actually played Genocide(I actually have morals SHOCK!!)

There’s nothing immoral about doing the genocide route to undertale. We must remember that as well developed as some of these characters are, they’re just characters. Not real.
It makes sense that the SOUL is not Kris', but instead us.
Going around Hometown talking to other monsters, Kris is a quiet, somewhat creepy kid that likes doing bad things/pranks(like hiding under Noelle's bed to scare her), a big glutton(going to the church, the priest would encourage Kris to come for the service instead of just coming for the food)(When Toriel tells Kris she made pie, she also told Kris to not eat the whole pie again.), plays piano, and would even make expressions based on what other monsters tell them. All things that _we_ have nothing to do with since we just started playing the moment Toriel woke Kris up.
When we play as Kris, we can make them talk to everyone, with some monsters commenting on how what Kris is doing isn't normal because Kris is quiet and keep to themselves. Kris only mashes the keys because, while Kris is good at the piano, _WE_ aren't. We can even make Kris say things based on what we know, even if Kris doesn't(like trying to hook Undyne up with Alphys or asking Sans if he recognized us).
But my questions are why Kris' half of the room is bare? Since they birdcage they use to lock their SOUL is well used, how long did they have that SOUL? Was that SOUL with them for a long time? Were they a vessel for more times than we know? What will they do with that knife?
Honestly I believe this IS a sequel, before you protest, let me explain.
I believe this is a timeline that is the result of so many runs of Undertale controlled by Chara that it is almost unrecognizable from Undertale, it is established in UT that Chara (and even Asriel) can create new worlds over and over, so perhaps this is BOTH a "sequel" and alternate timeline, but it is so far removed and changed from the original world of Undertale that it has changed entirely and the whole game, especially the ending shows us Chara is still in control of everything.
That's actually similar to what I thought. Asriel is off at university, so we don't know what's going on with him, but he could be a part of it. And Ralsei is an anagram of Asriel and we saw that he looks like him, so that's probably important somehow. I doubt that any of the weird alternate timeline/universe stuff will be heavily incorporated into the game, but it's fun to speculate.

Something else is there is an easter egg where you get an actual egg. This egg will be the only item that can come with us to the over-world. This proves to us that the Dark world was NOT made up by Kris and Susie.
I personally believe that Deltarune is a prequel to Undertale, while still being an alternate universe. Actually I think it holds as an almost prequel to Sans and Papyrus. Cause when you enter Sans secret lab in Undertale with a drawing of three people you don't recognise with the words "don't forget" under it. The words don't forget play a significant role all throughout Deltarune and this becomes particularly obvious if you listen to the lietmotifs and particular melody present withing every song actually relating to the lyrics of the song "don't forget". In the game file the sprites of Susie Kris and Ralsei are also labelled "Don't Forget" so it is a huge possibility that they could the 3 people in the drawings. Moreover, Sans has a hatred towards humans as expressed in guanine IN undertale "You'd be dead where you stand" and it is my belief that Kris may be the main reason for his hatred towards humans, and that Kris and the actions that we cannot prevent in this game somehow managed to get Sans stuck in the world of Undertale, when his original home was within Deltarune. He mentions missing home and that he gave up on trying to go back a long time ago, so it's my belief that Sans originally came from Deltarune, Kris' unpreventsble actions got him caught up in the universe of Undertale and he since then has been trying to get back to the world he originally came from.

@@kittobitto because it's set at a later date to Undertale (Undertale is set in 201X and Deltarune is set in 202X) but that doesn't mean that Sans and Paps couldn't have been sent into both the past and an alternate dimension. Time and space doesn't exactly follow conventional rules in these Universes.

I speculate that Deltarune is a peaceful AU that became the darkest timeline. Maybe it via Gaster's experiments, Chara and/or similar, but will be story that would further explore the characters in-depth (both new and old) through the calamity that was mentioned. Also, a good through-line to Undertale is having Sans and Papyrus escape from the Deltarune timeline in search of stabler timeline. Given the backroom at their house in Snowdin and the speculation of Sans being a Darkener, I think this would be a sufficient connection and be very, very interesting

If you think the discarding of your custom character and the dark chapter ending isn't consistent with how Undertale worked, maybe you should go back and play it again. The first message you get is flowey telling you it's kill or be killed: a notion you can obviously prove wrong.
You don't get to prove that your choices matter (unless you count the secret boss) in chapter one because... That's... How... Arcs... Work.

Theory here;
If you complete Undertale by means of genocide, on your second completion (if you choose the pacifist run) at the very end, it’s shown that chara is in possession of the character. Meaning that the choice of pacifism was taken from you, the disconnect happened there. Could this be a spin on that? Possibly. We won’t know until we get more chapters. Just thought I should’ve added that in.

My point is, you couldn't revert doing a genocide run in undertale. Even if you did the true pacifist again, it still didn't end on a positive note.
If this world of deltarune was indeed the world, in which we have already sold the character's or "our" soul to Chara then we wouldn't have much of a choice on how our character ends up, because Chara can (and does) take control anyway.

Actually, we can figure out some details about Kris.
First start with the room - Asriel's side - is full of stuff. Kris's - empty, except the CAGE. Kris is not an achiever, not a good kid.
Second, you arrive late to school and nobody really wants to be in group with you with one exception.
Some practical jokes that Kris supposedly performed sound oddly familiar.
Kris is, as far as we know, the only human in town.
Finally, the very theme of Deltarune chapter 1. Your choices do not matter, you are NOT in control.
There are all parallels to Chara. In Undertale it is quite obvious that Chara was not a good kid. Some jokes were downright dangerous.
In the end, Kris throws own soul into the cage, a prison. And the cage... it supposedly survived multiple impacts. Kris was likely trying to lock away and destroy own soul. What we see is not the first time it happened, most likely.
And about the lack of choice. Remember what Chara said near the end of genocide run? "Since when were you the one in control?"
All in all, it really sets up as a... spiritual prequel, actually.
And really the only character probably aware of all this, is Sans, assuming he has the same ability to understand timelines as in Undertale.
Chara also says "Let us erase this pointless world and move on to the next."
It's highly unlikely, but maybe, just maybe, the ending is Chara making a transfer to this world, choosing Kris as a vessel, discarding his soul and replacing it with the one WE gave them in conclusion of Undertale's no mercy route.
...If Toby really doesn't intend for it to have connections to Undertale, then the chance of this being actual thing is nonexistent, but still, it would be interesting
People also theorize that the one who talks to you in CONTACT part is Gaster, but again, who knows what Toby has cooked up for us
Well, it already has connections to Undertale. It is different timeline, but there are plenty of the familiar faces and there are tons of parallels.
So, while there is no DIRECT connection that we can be certain of, there are indirect connections.
Well, let's just say - knowing Toby, I don't think that all those details are just for shits and giggles. Let's just remember that Undertale had plenty of clues intentionally left in the code of the game to begin with.

There's also the fact that Chara robs you of choice in the end, by erasing the world regardless of what you say, so THAT is where the whole "your choice doesn't matter" theme really starts.
Maybe it will turn into a three-way battle for the control of this timeline, between us, Gaster and... whoever it was that posessed Kris. Considering they(it?) can rip out and discard their host's soul and still utilize said host with no trouble, we can probably assume that this entity is qutie powerful

A valid theory Grant, very valid indeed...I'm still holding out for a happy ending though or at the very least something along those lines. If choice not mattering was truly the message here then Susie's choices to change as a person would not have been a factor in this story. Just because the player's choices do not matter does not mean the choices of the other characters don't. You said it yourself Kris is not the main character of this game, Susie is and the events of chapter 1 all hinged on changing her initial outlook i.e. "Your choices don't matter" to "Don't hurt my friends". Of course Toby could still be a complete fiend and shove a downer ending down my throat but screw it until the full game I'm not giving up on hope just yet.
yeah I doubt it'll be a huge downer, dark ending either. Also don't forget that Toby has been dreaming this game up BEFORE undertale, so 'trying to not do the same thing as undertale' is NOT gonna play into his plans.
the ending to the king fight is VERY telling
The single instance of when your choice does matter proves unequivocally that Choice does matter it may just be a very small thing but it is in fact there the choice truly exists
I feel what is likely to happen is that the choices you make will stack up to the end
Things like in the Normal world Susie Picking up on Chara due to him acting so differently from the player Or Sans Making friends with YOU and not Chara in the over world
There are also some interesting tidbits to make note of like how Ralsei was Sealed behind a large door alone refers to himself as a prince of darkness with no subjects and when he goes down in combat he vanishes completely it's very likly Ralsei isn't actually a good person using everything he has to garner love from the player and potentially Kris
It's also possible that the other world was just your subconscious and Ralsei was Chara taking the form of a version of kris's reliable older brother Whispering sweet words into Kris's ears trying to get close and stay close
Another interesting fact is that you end up in the other world even if you just go back to bed when you wake up I think
Toby Fox wants people to feel there is no point in choice But when the time comes he'll whip the floor from under those who get complacent
But to the contrary, Susie had no choice in who she became. She tried to be anything but what she was supposed to be, and it didn't even matter.
Didn't she, she could've easily of killed Lancer or the king, she chose to be better than that. There's a difference between following the script to be a hero and choosing to be heroic.
She was neither the fairy tail heroine Ralsei prophesied nor was she the villain. The game took her from a bully to a teammate, that is not a character arc you find in stories where choice doesn't matter.

I think Susie kinda NEEDED this whole "hero destiny" to pop up into her life. Her aggressive persona was leading her towards a dark path (she tried to EAT a kid's FACE). The inner strength Susie will gain from being a hero will help her be able to withstand the struggles she faces from having a bad home life.
I feel that Susie will be able to befriend darkners with tough personalities more easily than Kris or Ralsei in certain situations once she learns how to balance her kindness with her aggressiveness (which is what happened in the ending of Chapter 1 right?).
So, if Undetale is Ocarina Of Time, Deltarune who make the totally opposite of the previous game is Majora's Mask...
I’m not exactly sure but I think this is a prequel because remember that the monsters and humans used to live together and the monsters got sealed underground because Chara tried to commit suicide and Asriel got her from where she jumped which was the intro scene Mountain so Asriel forged his body with Chara and took her back to the surface where she then took over and started killing all the humans causing a war which caused the monsters to get sealed underground and then Chara left the body and Asriel got taken out causing his soul to fall in the flower garden at the bottom of the mountain where he forged with the flower and became flowey. However before this all happened Chara was adopted by Toriel and Asgore and Asriel was her best friend/brother but she then betrayed them which is why at first all the monsters except Toriel and some of Asgore hate humans. I also found that in Gasters entry’s he talks about his vessels and in the beginning we choose our vessel and they start out as white, gray, and black just like Gasters followers and distorted creatures, ANDD the room in which we choose our vessel is a DARK room (dark darker yet darker) which is also what was caused when Gaster used the Determination Extracter and injected himself with Determination but as in the beginning he didn’t get to CHOOSE what happened to him and his fate was sealed.

Ok, so I have an awesome theory I just made while watching some videos, and I decided to share to you because you might think is interesting if you paid attention on Undertale.
So, my theory is that, Deltarune is a story continuation of Undertale, but not a simple continuation. This game, this world, was created by Chara, after the True Genocide Route on Undertale. Chara gives you the option to erase the world of Undertale or to not do it. If you agree to erase it, they will tell you that you are a good partner, and that they will erase this world and start a new one. THAT NEW ONE, is Deltarune, But this is not so simple. Even if you agree to work with Chara deleting Undertale and making a new one, on Deltarune your choices don't affect nothing. This because, when you choose to not delete the world, they asks you "Since when were you on the control?", and erases the world anyway. During the whole Undertale, Chara was watching your body, watching your choices, finding a chance to come back to life. When you does the Genocide Route, you are actually making the choices Chara would make, turning yourself (Frisk) to Chara. Chara takes all your power, and then, creates Deltarune.
Chara tricks you, letting you create a vessel, choosing their body, name and etc, and then saying that your choices doesn't matter. Everything you do in the game affect on nothing. It will always be the same ending, no matter who you tried to kill or spare. During the whole Chapter 1, Chara was trying to show to you how their world will be, and at the end, showing everything they think about you and how they will lead the story, by throwing your soul at a cage, with you unnable to do any decision. This is the world of Chara, and you helped them create it, by giving them all your power, and now, there is nothing that you can do about it. This game was specifically for the players that played both Pacifist and Genocide route. You may play the game and think it's a simple sequel of Undertale, but is not. It's a new world, a new game, that shows you that is not the game that you played before. This is Chara's world, that they created to just ruin it again, and the only way to stop them of doing the Genocide Route is by watching and trying to lead them to the Pacifist Route; *the same thing Chara did to lead you to the Genocide Route on Undertale.*

Cetrouz HHH meh, youre KINDA on to something. i will say though, there is a running theory in the DR community that Deltarune and its world and story is just the backdrop of a proxy war between Chara and Gaster. read more about it if youre curious.
Here's the thing though, Chara themselves was not necessarily a brutal, cold, heartless child. They were a bit disturbed from having a bad past and lacked a bit of empathy, but they were by no means a psycho killer when they were alive. Rather, they were probably just a regular kid with some mental health issues. Now, you know that in Undertale, Chara is the narrator. They are every single bit of flavor text, and all the narration. During the pacifist run, the narration is fun, quirky, and lighthearted. Chara seems like a very humorous child. Your choices depend on what kind of person Chara is to an extent. If you play the pacifist route, Chara seems content with everything and only really has nice things to say. If you run genocide, Chara becomes more and more corrupted over the course of the game. It could be said that in order to manifest as a physical being once more, Chara needed a high concentration of DT and LV. If you play pacifist, you gain absolutely no LV, therefore you maintain control of your own body. Frisk wins in the end. In genocide, Chara takes control in the end. Nothing you as the player does matters. It's just Chara erasing the world, with you in it.
I JUST THOUGHT OF THIS. So like since WE THE PLAYERS, are the soul that Kris took out of themselves, what if the vessel we created at the beginning of the game is not actually discarded, but USED in chapter 2? Maybe we'll use the character we CREATED At the beginning to save Kris or all the monsters FROM this Kris or something!?

I think Deltarune will be more of a spiritual sequel to the Earthbound Halloween Hack. That whole point of that game was that the only choice you had was to just stop playing. The connections don't end there, both games were released on halloween and both Varik and Kris look similar. Deltarune has also got some mild swears. Also, Toby said that Deltarune is the game he really wanted to make. Pls reply and tell my what you think
