Do note, this only works on some cars. If when you pull the keys out of your ignition, the cig lighter socket turns off too, then this solar charger won't do anything for ya, because the load is disconnected from the battery. This usually works on older cars, not so much the new ones. Just a heads up for anyone wanting one!
I have a solar charger similar to this one fitted in a car I use occasionally, just to keep the battery topped up. I bought one that had an OBD adaptor plug as well as the old cigarette plug. The OBD socket in cars has a permanent direct feed to the battery so can charge with keys in or out with car locked. The charger works great during the summer months but there is not enough sunshine during Nov to March so I must connect a mains trickle charger which again I plug into the OBD socket for convenience.
All cars are different and probably if the dc socket of the car turns off power, it might be also a diode, preventing discharge but allowing it to charge. Also you can connect a small cable directly to the battery from the inside. It's very easy
I've been playing with different solar panels since I can remember, also find it odd they don't come as standard equipment in cars, by Golly, even calculators had built in solar panels 35 years ago
Yeah. Why car manufacturer didnt install it? And my tought is, they already got this idea and RnD, turns out it cannot be done for some reason.. safety perhaps
For a while the US Army used solar battery chargers similar to this one to keep their batteries charged. The ones _they_ used, however, were garbage and created more problems than they solved, so they got rid of them. But just the other day I worked on a HMMWV that had a solar charger on it, it was a bit larger and had a diode placed in the wiring to keep the solar charger from discharging the battery at night. I tested it and it worked pretty well.
We installed a solar trickle charger on our old truck years ago. We don't drive it that often. I think the solar charger was originally from Harbor Freight but they don't have them anymore. Recently, the 12v plug went bad -- replaced that and it's still working. Before the solar panel, the battery usually did not last thru the winters. We have not replaced that truck battery since buying the solar panel, works like a charm. The suction cups on this one are a nice addition! Ours just sits in the dash when in use. We unplug it to drive the truck. The truck is always ready to go. Scotty, two questions: Do you have unplug it before driving? And I wonder if it would work plugged into the bottom side of a moon roof? ( Seems it would be more out of sight there if you were parking at an airport -- I'd be concerned about something breaking a window to steal it if they see it in the dash.)
Scotty on the amperage check I think you’ve got it set to the wrong setting, it’s reading micro amps as denoted by the micro symbol in the middle of the A and numeric readout, it’s also set to AC amps not DC so your values will be different as the calculations for different current types vary. You should be easily able to get a couple hundred milliamps from that panel but 0.4 microamps means it’s probably not even connected in the right socket and is just picking up very small electrical interference.
Audio fair enough but .74 Amps is 740mA, on scottys video it’s reading at microamps so even if he had 1 microamps (of which his was reading around 1 with sun) that would be equal to 0.001 mA which is a magnitude less than the above that others have seen and far less than I would expect, that low of a current wouldn’t light an LED, which I why I believe he has his testing equipment set up incorrectly.
Congratulations, you have won! Email me at: scotty.mechanic@gmail.com with your full name and address, so I can mail you this solar battery charger! And thanks to all entrants, don't worry, there will be another giveaway this Monday!
Would it be ok if I splice into a constant 12v wire somewhere in the car instead of plugging it into a cig lighter or directly to the battery terminals?
I recently got a Suner 20 watt panel, and it works very well. Using the lighter plug in an old truck that doesn't get driven enough. For the winter it works best almost vertical in a south-facing side window; in the summer it will probably work better under the windshield.
For cars that shut off the 12 volt sockets when the key is removed alligator clips are included so you can hook the solar panel directly to the battery.
Manufacturers should watch this Video and realize they need to put solar panels on electric vehicles so drivers can go the extra mile (s) without worrying about where the next charging station is as they're E V is running low on charge.
Back in 2003, before Google maps and smart phones, I put a "slim" desktop pc under the seat of my car and velcroed an 8" touch panel to the dash so I could use Microsoft copilot. Of course I needed a GPS module, so I bought a Bluetooth one and I put it under the rear glass. I used a similar panel to this to keep the GPS module charged up. Those were the days. For historical record, it was a HP slim desktop, the screen that connected with vga, the bt module, and the solar charger. The pc was $220, the 8" touch screen was $50, the bt module was $20, and the charger was $10. Oh, I also had a 1000w continuous inverter to power it, which cost $120 and still works to this day.
So is a controller for regulating and measuring power not necessary? I recently got a 40 watt 12v one with both options as connecting it to the battery or through the cig socket, but without a controller
Thanks Scotty, I was wondering why automakers don't make some sort of flexible solar charger for the entire roof and take some load of the air-conditiong or at-least ventilation when the cars are parked, by the way I love the gadgets you show in your videos.
Good video, but the current measurement is flawed. If you look closely it only shows uA instead of A. You should've taken the DC setting on the Fluke Multimeter instead of the AC setting.
First of all, the cigarette 12V plug might not be connected to the positive terminal of the battery when the ignition key of the car is out, so it is necessary to modify the electrical wiring. Second: in 1:29 , 1:27, 1:42 the readings of this fluke 87V are in microamps AC. And the solar charger supplies DC current in the order of milliamps. The meter should be in DC milliamps. (????) Independent of this detail, a solar panel of this size could provide between 100 mA and 500mA so, theoretically It could maintain the battery charged for a long time if you leave the car outside.
Kcducttaper1 depends on the car. Most cars ive owned have atleast 1 outlet always on, and the other ignition based. If not you could wire it to the battery
Maybe the newer cars do. My '94 only has 1 outlet and it's switched via the ignition. I've got a wire running straight to the battery under my dash, but I put it there when I installed my inverter, so that's not a factory setup in my case.
My parents got me one of these for Christmas after hearing my battery kept dying (my car sits for a long time regularly). Battery hasn't died once since I installed it. They work great. =)
I do that now. If you have a car with a dc plug that stays on when the cars off. I dunno how long it can last but I've left it running once for 4-5 hours and my car started up still, But i have a fairly new battery too.
Saw an ad for one of those a while back. A fan that fit a side window, partially rolled up, and a photocells to power it. Supposed to keep your car cool on a hot day.
Some cars come with this feature as an option like my old Audi A8, the sunroof and a built in solar power that would leave the fan running and air out the car
I had one of those about 20 years ago, bought it at Walmart. Worked great. You roll your window down, set it on top of the window, and roll it back up.
Get again Scotty you showed me things that I did not know. Thank you for keeping my 1995 Mercedes Benz c220 running as long as it did. As well as my 99 Suburban.
slow trickle chargers have always existed for keeping lead acid batteries alive in storage, very common with bikes in the winter, they are the cheapest charger, can be found anywhere such things are sold, the solar ones have been out for a long time as said, was just logical, but use case is very limited.
assuming a tesla has 75kw battery and this 5 watt panel makes total of 30 watts of energy for 6hrs of each daylight per day...75000watts divide by 30 watts = 2500days!!! or 6.84 years!!

I don't think they'd work. You might have to hardwire a new socket somewhere. Would be interesting to see if you could have one of these run your fans to keep the car cooler during a hot day.
I actually installed a cig lighter and wasn't sure if to wire it as always on or not. then I got a solar charger like the one Scotty reviewed and then I had to rewire it. it's not hard.
MAK SURE YOUR CIGARETTE LIGHTER DOSE NOT TURN OFF WHEN YOU TAKE OUT THE KEY ! IF SO YOU HAVE TO DIRECTLY CONNECT THE CIGARETTE LIGHTER TO THE BATTERY. Cheers.

U are like the Judge Judy of cars. Years of experience and knowledge. You make it simple, no complicated terms. Most of all, you tell the truth! I Love It!!! Thank You!😆💛🛻⚙️🔍🚘🔧👍
Works fine with always on cigarette lighter plugs, but not when you run it into an ignition-switched 12v power socket without the key on. Use your noggin and think before you buy one folks!
I have a 1986 car and this works in the cigarette lighter. I bought a coleman solar charger that comes with eyelet connectors and alligator clips as well.
1.1 micro amps is a worthless top-off amperage for a vehicle of any size. That wouldn't be enough charge to keep a phone or tablet operational if I was using it. No wonder he's giving it away.
One of these would be great for my 2005 Bonneville, it has enough problems as it is with 182k on it. Never knew these things even existed. Thanks Scotty!!
Just got my 2nd one of these from Harbor Freight. Just learned you must unplug it from the cig lighter b4 you start ya vehicle other wise the panel will be damaged.
Looks like a good idea I have a truck that sits a lot I have to start it up every few days to keep the battery from dying. Looks like one of those solar charges would come in handy
Nice Scotty! I could use it just like everybody else ... Selling on the side of the road in my conversion van could help offset the drain. Keep up the good work

It feeds right back into the battery through the 12V outlet? Interesting.
It has to be an outlet that is still "hot" with the ignition off and key removed.
This is not true for all outlets.
Thanks for the info!
i was wondering about that. looks like i'll have to use a harness that connects to the battery directly instead.
I have a 2006 Buick Rendezvous CSX that has hot plugs. This'll work.

Very bad idea on newer cars.
I'm sure this will completely meet your needs, you have an assigned parking spot on basement level 2
Looked like that meter was reading micro amps to me. 🤔

yeah, otherwise 1A * 16V = 16W of power is crazy. Sun would burn us like hell if this small plate could collect so much power from light
Snajperis crazy I didnt even think of that lol.
Now it makes me wonder if Scotty knew this or he is just trying to push product. Either way he puts out some great videos
dunno about his meter, but 1/2Amp is a reasonable output for a panel like that.

I've been in some neighborhoods in which that thing would get your windows smashed in immediately.

1.2 uA and the meter was on AC mode not DC. so, the reading is actually the fluctuation of the DC current.

I just wanna say, thanks man i like your videos, they are fast and straight to the point
These things are a game changer for RV and boats. I have an extra vehicle that sits for extended time so pick me 😎
Clean inoffensive comment.
Clean inoffensive comment.
How do these work if the circuit is cut when the is key off?
sassed1 2many Read my comment you are 100% correct these things don’t work !
My Xterra has numerous power port's.
"give it a lick !!!"
Thanks...I have been trying to determine if I should get one for my truck that gets used occasionally. Now I know...YES!
Harbor Freight has these
I put one of those on my car during a heat wave and the darn thing melted.
The cheap one from Harbor Freight Tools? :)
Lol. Get you money back. Yikes!
🏎💥💭💭Do not rev up but warm up your solar panel!!!!🌞🛰👍🏽🇺🇸🇯🇲
Junior Lexus
Lol, good one
Tim G.. lol😅👍🏽🇺🇸🇯🇲
You look familiar 😆
LEXUriouS Kirk Lol😅😂🤣...what can I say it's a small world that we live in!...excellent review on the Lexus LS430.👍🏽🇺🇸🇯🇲
I like you ideas this one would be good for me scotty top man
Scotty will you be my grandpa? I’ve never met mine and I’d love to have a car enthusiast as one 🤣
I need one of those for me tractor 😂😂
I think most people will keep there cars under a shade if they we leave it for long time 😂💔
I use a 5 watt version on my daughters power wheels. The best 20$ I've ever spent
1.1 uAmps, as you can see when he zooms in, lol
Noticed that too. Cigarette lighter socket is not connected when key is not at ON or ACC position.
1.1 micro amps is a worthless top-off amperage for a vehicle of any size. That wouldn't be enough charge to keep a phone or tablet operational if I was using it. No wonder he's giving it away.
disconnect the battery
Thatd suck if u had an alarm of any kida
Cristi Cristi then your computer sensors will get fucked beyond belief if you have a modern car
One of the points was that such a device could keep the security system working.
GTAMasterPlayer ..... My 1982 chevy has no sensors so it'll be fine
What? 6/10 amp? That meter is reading AC micro amps!
Thanks for keeping us informed. I share these videos with friends and now they are addicted to them.
2:12 morty from rick and morty on drugs.
Rev up your engines
Scotty are you my dad?
It's great how test the product out makes it easier for the rest of us and no more extension cords.
If I place a clean, non-offensive comment but my user name is Bofa Deez Nuts, can I still win?
Yes, as long as you dont spread the Ligma disease.
One of these would be great for my 2005 Bonneville, it has enough problems as it is with 182k on it. Never knew these things even existed. Thanks Scotty!!
With modern cars, this is a necessity. Thanks for all your great videos!
Just got my 2nd one of these from Harbor Freight. Just learned you must unplug it from the cig lighter b4 you start ya vehicle other wise the panel will be damaged.
I never thought about this problem or the solar fix. Thanks Scotty!
Hi Scotty I am a car guy myself love your channel. Always learning something new.
Looks like a good idea I have a truck that sits a lot I have to start it up every few days to keep the battery from dying. Looks like one of those solar charges would come in handy
Thanks for the video @ScottyKilmer !
I often wonder how one of these stacks up against one of the preferred "Battery Tenders."
I love your car videos because it taught me so many skills and learned so much. I hope you keep it up coz I learned to save tons of money.
I use one. I drive a truck and out for 4-5 weeks.
Had to g e t a boost when I returned a couple times.
Bought a solar charger and had no problem since
Thanks for this good information. a good objective report on new items are appreciated.
Scotty, you seem to give knowledgeable unbiased information. Thanks.
Steve
This is really good if you want to chill in your car listening music, and even the AC if you fancy it, without worrying about a dead battery!
Thank you!!! I was looking for a reliable review and I was happy to see you recommending them.
Scotty, the range on that multimeter was micro amps (0.000001). It was also on AC.
Love ur videos I fix my own car because of you thanks a lot
Nice Scotty! I could use it just like everybody else ... Selling on the side of the road in my conversion van could help offset the drain. Keep up the good work
That is cool. I love finding things that are out of the Box to use in my cars like this.
