Our reviews give you two perspectives. Jakub takes the perspective of the car enthusiast, while Yuri represents the interests of the general consumer. You won't find details about engine compression ratios here, instead you'll have real world opinions on what it's like to drive and own cars.
Would you get a Prius Prime? Or something else?

Id rather be driving a golf cart. Seriously.
I would rather use my legs lmao
I would drive a lawn mower across all 7 continents and all 195 countries before i drove this thing
Chevy Volt all the way
The Prius is impressive, but it's just so... Toyota :-P The Ioniq is a thousand times better, I just wish it had an electric heater! I looked at the Ioniq but bought a Golf GTE instead. More fun to drive anyway ;-) Similar to the A3 e-tron. But if I were in Canada it'd be the Volt hands down!

The only reason I'm watching a prius video is because it's from straight pipes..
Kaiden Piggott what an awful vehicle.
Rediscover Film It what ACTUAL way is this car an “awful” vehicle. I’m curious too see what logical reasons you have.
if these companies think they can rob the hard working middle class by buying these cars, think again. ill let the rich buy this shit. when these cars are normal in the market and come back down to 30,000. ill look into it.
You sound like such a douchebag
You're missing out, Kaiden!
My 05 Prius is a beast. 320k miles and still going. Only had to replace the battery once at $2k USD. Not fun to drive or fast but it has been the most reliable trouble free vehicle I have ever owned.
DO YOU FART A LOT ON THAT SHITTY SEAT?
Please don’t call your Prius a ‘Beast’ again.
Jasswear 320k miles? Thats pretty beast.
Adam Kelly: no. That’s a reliable car
Jasswear reliable cars are pretty beastly
Good lord. That thing in reverse sounds like a patient dying on an operating table. 12:58
favorite line from a car review on prius: "soulless penalty box"
No, I think it's Startship Enterbutt entering the butt, and she's gonna blow.
I wish all those beeps would go off when the driver of that Prius hogs the overtaking lane.
That beeping can be disabled.
Yeah, the dealer can change it to a single backup beep. It's much improved. Not sure why the continuous beeping is the standard.
09:27 There is a charging mode : Hold the HV/EV button for 3sec. and Voila, it will charge the battery while driving in Hybrid mode.
A 3-mode button disguised as a 2-mode button is such a terrible UI design.
@@mikefarrington7141 it's because it destroys efficiency so Toyota hides it from people to ensure the car is always getting the highest amount of MPG's it's also useless in most situations.
@@marco.morel04 It is almost unnoticeable on the fuel economy when driving fast for long periods. I've seen some drivers loose at most 4 mpg sharing their drive logs on youtube. From an empty SOC, which sucks, charge mode can take 45 minutes to fill up to 75%. That's handy for when you know that you're at most an hour away from the town/city.
@@toyotaprius79 in my 2018 Prime, charge mode works best at speed between 40-50 MPH, any faster and I see barely any charge for pretty lack luster fuel economy so I consider it pretty useless, it might just be my car though cause I have heard it works well for others, I wouldn't know what would be wrong with my car to cause it to work so inefficiently but it drives just fine and the Hybrid system works properly so I'm not concerned 😂
@marco.morel04 what kind of millage do you get on a full tank and full battery.
Owner's perspective: I have had my Prius Prime since July. 5000+km later I am almost done my third tank. $50 CAD to fill up in BC. It's super slow and sad compared to my other toys (Civic Type R and S2000) but it saves me so much money.
I used to spend about $600 CAD in fuel in my S3 per month. S3 did about 8L/100km. Now with the Prime I charge at home, charge when I can at work. One way to work is 47km. So far since new I've averaged 1.9L/100km. First tank did 2300km, second tank did 1800+km. Third tank is getting worse, maybe due to weather.
If anyone is wondering, the 4 seater doesn't bug me at all. I thought it was going to be an issue but I never encountered it. Rear seats are extremely roomy.
The lack of Apple CarPlay is tolerable. I use a magnet mount for my phone to mount just to the right of the steering wheel. Waze, Google Maps from there. My music is played via Bluetooth.
The gloss black isn't terrible, I never put any scratchy hard objects in the console. There is a tray in the giant center console and any scratchy hard objects can go in there. Passengers with bags will always go in the trunk or the floor. Mine has stayed free of any scratches.
The heated steering wheel kinda sucks. Top and bottom parts don't heat up. I sell Jaguar Land Rover and those steering wheels get so hot I have to turn it off after 2 minutes. (Side note, the 4 cylinder F Type you guys reviewed got sold at my dealer)
The lane keep assist is absolute garbage however the adaptive cruise works very well. It's smoother than Audi's ACC. Front collision warning, blind spot monitoring also work very well.
Now I actually kinda wish I got the i3S REx because of how far my commute is. When there are no spots to charge the car, I leave work without the charged battery, the car acts as a normal Prius and does about 4L/100km, this car is not great for highways. If I had the i3S REx, it would have a shorter combined range but more electric range. i3 would've been more suited for my commute.
I do enjoy how the Prius is extremely comfortable and it's softer than the i3. i3 is more fun to drive as the steering is sharper, but the ride is stiffer there.
All in all I still enjoy the Prius Prime, it's better looking than the Honda PHEVs, especially the Clarity, that thing is gross. I can use the HOV lanes in BC and it saves me time during my commute.
Thanks for the comment!
I have this car. If you only drive it in ECO mode, it is rather sluggish. However, if you really want pep, drive it in POWER mode. It really kicks up the torque. It will cost you in the MPGs, but will move along much nicer. For that matter, even just driving in NORMAL mode is peppier than ECO.
Also, I learned that driving in snow really requires driving in POWER mode. Having had the 2nd Gen Prius and getting stuck too many times in snow, I find the Prime in POWER mode to be much better in snow.
@@zolarczakl3880 they make an AWD version now. I don't know if the Prime version has it but the regular Prius comes with an AWD option!
Why its not good for highways? Can u explain
The best thing about these guys is that they give each car a fair review whether it is a Hellcat, Pacifica, or a Prius. Major props guys.
Tbh Prius is a really good car. Super reliable, practical, and saves a lot of gas. And look wise I don't think it's ugly. Sure it's not particularly handsome like some other cars, but it's definitely not ugly as some people say. It looks like a normal car. I have a 2010 and I love it. Gonna trade it soon for a Lexus is250 though. But I'm usually always confused as to why it gets so much hate. As car enthusiasts in my opinion we need to love every car what it's meant for. Sure Prius isn't the fastest car, but fast = more gas. And Prius is a gas saver so it being slower makes sense. Before I got one I was kinda skeptical. But after driving it for over a year I realized that it's a great car.
Yeah but it comes with the stigma that all Prius drivers face where everyone hates Prius owners cuz they are slow as fuck and can't drive...
The front looks great and a huge improvement of the previous gen. The rest is where things fall apart.
You also forgot to mention how incredibly comfortable it is to be in! Many other cars are a far cry from that sort of comfort!
Cross actually a lot of Prius drivers are people who have been cab drivers for years and years so if u out the sterotpyes aside, they are very good and experienced drivers
Clorex Bleach it's not that much more uncomfortable actually. It's roomy and it's not like ur sitting on rocks
never thought i’d enjoy a Prius review. huh.
The gloss black freakout at 6:39 is epic. More rants like this, please!
I have this car with white interior. No gloss black freakout.
Never enough gloss black in the interior for me..... absolutely love it. Give me a beige or white interior and you will see me turn into a chainsaw welding madman!!!
More like Piano Gross Black!!!
Just bought a used '18 Prime with 136,000+ miles. My 60 mile trip from work averaged 85mpg included 50% highway driving.
How she holding up
The B mode is not more regenerative brake, it uses the ICE as brake. Useful for downhills.
if we look at the OBD softwares, in D passive regen is like 5kW, B is 10-15kW with some proportion going to the spinning engine. When the battery is full to the brim, still going down hill, the generator can soak up as much a 45kW to spin the engine as an air pump. It's great, sounds like a diesel Jay brake. But except when the battery is almost full, it's useless.
I heard though that B mode is good for autocrosses, it keeps the engine spinning and ready more for re-ignition to accelerate, otherwise the engine will always keep needing the MG1 generator to restart it, and that can take up 20hp out of the 36hp motor.
My Honda Clarity Plug in Hybrid has gone 2,800 and I’m still using the dealership gas when I picked it up new 2 months ago. I’m going to get about 500 miles per gallon by the time I fill up my car for the first time. The most important thing in a plug in hybrid is the EV range. My Clarity goes 60 miles per charge in LA traffic.
Honda Clarity is like seeing a Unicorn in Canada. Good luck to anyone looking for one.
Careful on that, gas goes bad after a while.
@@tommaxwell4966 you can add something to the tank can't you?
Much more power and torque too.
@@susanchapman4140 there's a lot of them in Quebec
My parents have the Prius prime with the smaller infotainment screen and really is a delight to drive plus there are months where they don't ever get gas (live in the city)
If the car doesn't have google maps (apple carplay or android auto) I'm using my phone. It's that simple
Problem is - you need a special think to hold your phone.
I have an old Corolla and I have a special phone holder that mounts on climate vent. This car has strange shape to those vents so I wouldn`t be able to fit that here.
Another thing if your new car in 2018 still doesn't have proper maps and navigation, maybe you bought the wrong car.
@@Sameerahuja662 true
kinda makes the 11" infotainment screen useless then, no?
@@procerator I have a vent phone holder on my prime upgrade located on the vertical fin and resting above the slide handle
Jakub, I'm with you on the gloss black... The previous owner of my C class didn't spec the wood trim so the WHOLE center stack is gloss black. It's scratched to hell and it drives me nuts!!!
My man. Sorry to hear it though. Just wrap it in fake carbon fiber or brushed metal something
When I got my c class I specified I wanted wood because the scratches of the gloss would drive me nuts. On delivery the car they were supposed to give me was specced with gloss black! Long story short they gave me another with wood trim with a higher spec but for the same price lol
I have a Prius prime 2017. Exact the look and color. Totally love it,!! Man. It felt great when my mpg shows 199 all the time as long as I remember to charge it at night. I do not go panic when I can not find a charger like other electric car owners when driving long distance. Plus Shark fans LOVE the blue!
A Prius. Actual looks half decent. But your review made it better.
The composite liftgate is a $3500 USD part. I work in a bodyshop and just replaced one a couple months ago. Crazy expensive.
Oh and the interior with the piano white is even worse than the piano black. The center console looks like a urinal.
It a particular gripe actual Prius fans just can't stand about Toyota. Their PR for years have been so incredulous and pretentious. Rather than viewing owners enjoying the raw practical and physical reliability of a go anywhere hatch (like a Citroen CX) - they bought themselves into the unhelpful virtuous, status minded Head-up-their-Holers. In many markets only until last year, Priuses were not available in base trim and sold as entry-luxury cars, especially in Europe...
That carbon composite rear hatch was really just an unnecessary but slick gimmick. Am sad to hear about its real cost.
Because Toyota is Lacking car play/android auto, is the major reason why i don't buy toyota cars/trucks. Come on, it probably costs them $20 for the license for each, but the the convenience to the consumer is 100x the cost. Stop being stubborn, Toyota. I hope you read this. You're not software people, your UI is not better than apple/android.
Bunty Chea some of the new 2019 models now have Apple CarPlay (no Android Auto), like the Avalon, Corolla Hatch, and rav4
Maybe if you want apple car play but not android auto...it is such a horrible platform. It crashes all the time and looks like it's from 2004. I'm not an apple guy but car play is much better than AA. I don't even use it anymore...just use stock infotainment in 2018 accord.
Thanks for the info, guys. Fortunately or unfortunately, however you see it, I'm an Android user. I would still like to see the option. Firmware updates should be expected for any operating system.
Android user and also have android auto in my car. Android auto is not good as you think. I turned mine after using it for week.
My phone connect to the car via Bluetooth, works good for me. My whole playlist on phone
You guys are definitely getting better and better all the time. Keep up the good work !
I think the Prius is a great car, and one of the best cars for big city use, and new drivers who don’t want to pay big money for gas. Unfortunately, people don’t get Prii and hate on them, and they insult people who like/buy them, and I can not tell you why.
i think it's a political thing. I bet if you ask people which party they belong to, the Prius haters are all Republican. They just hate anything that helps the environment and people who are environmentally conscious. However, a lot of people buy just because they want more money in their pockets and less at the pump, reliability, cost, and safety. It wouldn't matter what it looks like, there would be the same haters.
I say this on every hybrid type car review, but by far for the price, buying a Sonata Hybrid during a hyundai year end clearance event is probably the most affordable way to own a hybrid, unless it's a used prius from the early 2000s. It's only that finding one that is left is generally really hard, especially in Ontario.
On the prime, that giant tablet screen is really off putting. Yeah it's actually like paying for a downgrade.
First, Jakub and Yuri - you guys are a really great team, love watching your videos....
Second, hold on to your hat, I traded in my '15 Golf R for my 18 Prime Premium... lol. But seriously I did, I wanted a normal appliance for once, and also wanted to save money.... and man is the prius prime an incredible appliance. Yes the big screen and UI/UX is absolutely ATROCIOUS (tuning stations on sirius XM is absurdly bad), but the screens up top aren't bad. Yes, the little 15" wheels are quite bad looking (17's actually make the car look good - toyota should've put the touring wheels on there. Yes its slow, and low speed turning it feels a bit boat like. BUT.... The car is VERY comfortable to drive. It's actually very refined in its manners, and very quiet. My commute to work is 24 miles round trip. Sidenote, my range in the summer was up to 33 miles. I plug in the prime every night in my apartment garage, which works well, however the extra range of a volt would've been so much nicer. That said, over 3500 miles I'm averaging 290MPG, yes 290 freaking mpg. On gas I can easily get in the 60's. Have I missed the driving dynamics of a sporty car and wish I got a volt or bolt, yes (but Chevrolet dealers are a complete joke and that killed that idea). IN fact, my first week with the car I had pretty bad buyer's remorse cause it was such a big change. However, driving with eco in mind and being judged by the prius constantly with my eco score (lol) - has actually relaxed me, you just flip the joystick to d and go to your destination effortlessly. Oh speaking of which, standard toyota safety sense is awesome (dynamic cruise control is so cool). As are standard LED headlights which are quite good.
I've actually thought about trading the prime in but its just so good at doing what its meant to do which is save me $100 in gas every month and be dead reliable and comfortable. Very fair review from both of you!
@@DiscoFang Just use this calculator - www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/savemoney.jsp
My 2008 Prius has a more usable infotainment. Same rubbish maps but I can change the temperature from the steering wheel.
Does it have separate A/C temperature controls for the driver and passenger? Most cars less than 25 years old do have that.
Just got mine a few weeks ago, and I'm up to 530 miles now, and the fuel gauge hasn't even left full because I can charge at work. Love the car,and never thought I'd say that about a Prius!
How many miles now and how many on Battery.

Take your foot off brake to Regen brake maybe 20% of max. Ride the brake a tiny bit to not use regen while coasting. Ride brake more to regen %20-%100. Depress brake farther and then the actual brakes start working. Brakes last 100K+
I have a 2012 Prius. Only driven stick shifts prior. It's a super car! So much cargo room and the dongle/backwards beep is super cute. Glad they kept it!
3:15 ish - there is a lumbar control for the driver seat. Round button near the two seat controls. Just test drove and bought 2018 Prius Prime Premium. Traded in Prius c which was great
I really enjoy you guys
funny and realistic real world comments
I own a Prius Prime 2019 upgrade (not the technology package seen here) for 5 months now. Reasons i love my Prius: I almost forgot how to put gas in it!! No kidding 3000km and i have put 54 liters so far!! Nice sleek look (ok not everyone likes the look, but I do) also I have the red color, nice! Very comfortable ride (I had a Mazda before, very rough), excellent braking. Love the way the door just opens when you reach for the door handle. I am 6 foot 1, and i fit comfortably in all seats (if 4 person with this height, we would all be comfortable). Autocontrole cruise control. The car automatically adjust your speed when you reach a car that is slower. I like it, but you have to realize it when you get close, because before you know it, you are 10 km/h slower and you forget to pass the car. Qi charge for iPhone..except the spot is black like my phone and forgot to pick up my phone a few times
And now on to the stuff I hate about my Prius Prime or should i say my computer on wheels. God dammit (sorry) the center control which is so promissing, is so frustrating. You guys in the video are right, the design is crap. You can't see very well, the buttons to change anything on the radio is so small, you have to take your eyes off the road to actually see, the volume button, again you have to take your eyes off the road to use them (fortunatly you have the button on the steering wheel), the road map...well completely not user friendly, good luck getting to where you want. You have to tell it which province you want to go to...what how many Ottawa are there in Canada!! And one thing you guys did not mention is the brightness of the screen at night, it is blinding. But hey there is a feature to turn the screen off (excellent) but now you lose the ability to use the functions (radio, temperature control, map, etc.) but it keeps functionning...but you can`t see it. The heated seat..you guys nailed it, where are the buttons again!!! the storage space between the front seat actually opens sideways, not sure what Toyota is thinking, but I don't like it. Also a few days after I had the car, i noticed that the plastic trim on the hatchback door (on the top) was cracked. Notice when you lift the hatch, that this plastic trim is the heighest point...which means you will hit it first if you have a low ceiling in your garage...which is not my case, I think my car came like that &%/?. Also don't care about the beeping noise when you back up. So loud and really, is that necessary (well that loud anyways). THe center panel...well just takes my eyes off the road if i want to view what is on the far right. That idea has to go now.
You guys talked about storage space, 10 box. That looks impressive, but wait til you try to put your bike in there. You litteraly have to put it in partially, go to the side door, pull it in a bit more, then go the the back and finish the job. There is the nice storage for the cable, but there is not much else you can hide there. I don't hate that it's a 4 seater, but it would be nice to have 5. I knew what i was getting when i bought it!
In all, I think the interior of this car is very poorly designed and not user friendly at all, which is very frustrating. I should not be frustrated at my car!! Toyota obviously know they are the best car company (at least they act like it) and they probably go on reputation to sell this car, instead of testing it with real people and get feedback and improve the product. I give this car a 4 out of 10
Interesting. There were a bunch of things in your cons section that I haven't seen other people mention yet. Thanks. :)
Middle class aspirations: Owning a Toyota Prius Prime.
What I don't get what you mean? That prize goes to the Camry way more sold to the poor middle class
The middle class aspires to own low rent Bimmers and Mercs. The Prius is more the safe smart choice people make because they’re safe and smart - obviously not all that interested in driving though.
My middle class aspiration is buy a fully loaded 18' Mustang GT
Evan J don’t you worry, it can be driven when you want to lol
As the owner of a late '90s Cavalier, I would love a Prius Prime.
You guys even make a Prius sound interesting! Lol. That piano black and the incessant beeping would be the death of me! Good review as always guys! Keep up the great work!
My mother has one of these in that same blue color, and she absolutely loves it. Very nice car.
There’s a ton of piano black in my accord and I’ve never found it that difficult to keep clean. Just keep a swiffer in the glove box.
After buying 5 priuses in my family, including the PiP, I've moved on to Tesla. I was planning to trade in the PiP for the Prime, but the Prime lost the 5th seat in the rear and less cargo room, so that broke the deal for me. Waiting for the Model Y to replace the PiP. Prius itself is a great car for those who want to wean themselves off of gasoline.
I considered getting a new Clarity/Prime/Ioniq PlugIn back in September. Bought a 2014 Volt instead, and two months later, even though it's a Chevy I think it was the right choice. But I'm planning on going to full EV in the not too distant future. If I was fine burning gas and was going to keep the car for 10 years I would have bought one of the new guys.
I’m embarrassed to say I enjoy my 2011 Toyota Prius. I am so embarrassed of the car that I bought a Lexus 350 SUV just so I can say a beat up my Prius. The bottom line is the Prius will not die, God knows I have tried to kill it. I haul sand rocks and I pull a trailer with it. Driving it every day it never fails to do what it supposed to because of the Toyota reliability. I’m going to get the prime next. But it will always be my secondary car yet I drive it all the time.
??? It doesn’t even look like a Prius anymore the rear looks like a Mitsubishi front looks a bit like new Camry
But 1035km range is pretty nice
It looks like a Prius. The Prius looks like nothing else, and nothing else looks like the Prius. It doesn’t just look like a Prius, it is a Prius
Front looks like Acura NSX
Emilio Fernandez When I had the Prius Prime and i had done Quebec -> Toronto with only the half of the Gaz
If you live nearby to yours jobs you can be 100% electric during all the time.
And i have changed of car because the car is cancerous in winter. The CVT Motor is not a very good choice.
My work car is a Prius-12000kms a month. My personal car is a civic type R 5000kms a year... life in balance
The B mode uses the engine to slow the car like a regular car does when it is in gear. In D mode it just uses a low amount of regenerative braking to slow the car.
Do you prefer the D Arthur ?
Not true in electric mode which your 08 prius doesn't have
@@lespaulranger It has an ev button in European models including the UK where I am
@@ArthurEmbleton Ah yeah they did give other regions EV mode. Well in the US Prius Prime, switching it to B does actually increase regen braking instead of turning on engine braking, which it still does in HV mode.
I have on. Number one in reliably! High quality in fit and finish. 34 miles on electric charge. Super comfortable seats and ride. LED lights are amazing, better than my M6 BMW LEDs. Carbon fiber rear deck lid! 134 mpgs.Nuff said.
Nice review as always guys. One thing you didn't mention is there are not three seats in the back seat. Which is a total bummer.lack of Apple carplay Android auto is pretty much a Toyota saying at least for now except in the Avalon. The reverse beeping in previous generation Priuses you could disable going through a couple of steps in the car. You can find that on TH-cam. However in the prime they may have changed that procedure Priuses have done that since the very beginning and it's been extremely annoying since the very beginning. The reasoning is when is in reverse the gasoline engine will almost never run and so it's easy to accidentally put it in reverse and back into something thinking you were in park. Stupid in my opinion but that's the reasoning. the handling on the new Prius is supposed to be significantly better than the previous Priuses because they actually have a real now.
I currently drive a 2008 with 257000 miles on it and it still drives pretty good and still gives me 45 to 48 miles per gallon average.
There is a great video on Weber Automotive that shows the removal of the battery pack in a few other technical details on the Prius Prime and every other Prius and electric vehicles including the bolt that you just drove. so you might check out his channel if you want to see some mechanical and Technical information.
You mentioned not being able to recharge the battery with the gasoline engine. I do believe on the Kia Niro and Hyundai ioniq plug in hybrids that if you put it in low mode on the transmission it will charge the battery backup takes about 45 minutes from empty while driving down the interstate. Kind of a handy feature if you know you're going to be on a road trip and then do some City driving after that.
the prime has a charge mode if you press and hold the ev button down
@@billsmith7235
That's good info. Never heard anyone mention it.
Unfortunately the Prime is useless for me. Need 3 across the backseat.
Purchased the non-prime version of the prius for the wife as she commutes a ton for work. It's been a great vehicle and is surprisingly fun to drive (in sport mode) as it seem to sharpen up the driving experience (both power and suspension). The steering wheel has a surprisingly sporty feel to it - allows you to easily forget you're driving a prius. Gloss black interior elements stink and I find the headrest sits too far forward for my liking, but other than that it's a perfect mid-step on the road to an all electric down the road.
Chevy volt is 80 km electric only range, and I have consistently gotten 1150km total range, highest I’ve gotten is 1300km in the summer... and I’ve got apple CarPlay and android auto :)
And it has far superior driving dynamics.
This car is gorgeous in my opinion especially with that color. 600+ overall range is pretty awesome too.
50mpg.. Isn't that what it's always gotten? Since the beginning of the prius
I like you guys' dynamic. Back and forth is smooth and funny and entertaining. Subscribing!
Thanks! Hit the notification bell too
8:50 Correction: power mode does not actually raise your power output. All it does is change the throttle mapping from linear to something like a square root curve to have the car react more to shallow pedal inputs.
The "Its a cvt" part is also wrong. Toyota calls it an e-cvt but its really nothing like a normal cvt. There are no belts, two electric motors and a planetary gearset.
These guys make any car look interesting
Great video -- so informative and entertaining. I would swear you guys are going off a script but I know it's all off the cuff.

Amazing review guys, as always! So the beep when you put in reverse is mandatory in Japan for safety reasons! My fiancé is japanese and i often drive when i go there and all the cars beep when in reverse + the extra beep of the parking sensor if it has it! Bummer! Cheers from Vancouvet BC
We drive other Japanese cars here all the time. None of them beep inside
TheStraightPipes maybe Toyota dont want to spend time/money messing or turning off the beep in the Prius Prime for the North America. As you guys said, the dealer can disable it! Thanks for the reply!
We own a 2017 Prius Prime Advanced and love it. We have the white interior. It is way more comfortable and quieter than the 2004 Prius and 2010 Prius that we also own. My wife loves the heated seats and steering wheel. She mostly drives this car back and forth to work which is 9 miles each way so it is within the range of the battery and never uses the gas engine on her work commute. When it rains the back window stays clear because of the aerodynamics which is way cool to experience for the first time at least. Now we just pay no attention to it but it beats having a wiper for sure. The sensors on this car sure are nice. It warns you of cars coming when you back out of the driveway, it warns you of cars in your blind spots, it actually will automatically come to a stop in heavy traffic and then automatically start moving again and take you back up to your set speed or safe speed when traffic starts moving again. One thing they could do easily but don't have is the ability to use the back up camera as a rear view while moving forward. That would be very nice and welcome. We have kept the Sirius Radio subscription going because it is so nice. Only about 30 dollars every 6 months because I tell Sirius that is all that we will pay or we drop them and to them 30 is better than zippo. Overall this is the best vehicle we have ever owned and though it could always be better, we have absolutely no buyers remorse. I am looking forward to a Toyota all electric vehicle that I understand they are working on. One other thing is that Toyota, so far at least, really shows their appreciation for our business. No regrets.
Not my cup of tea this car, but a good review. Pink hat and brown jacked, nice!
I think the model 3 is the elephant in the room for your most recent series of videos. If you need a test drive to review it, let me know. I was just contacted by tesla to test drive the AWD version that I have a reservation for. I’d actually love to see you guys review it before I order it.
The reverse/sensor beeping symphony of this car sounds like McDonald’s at lunch
My parents used to drive a Prius C. I currently drive a used Nissan Leef. Great video!
Which leaf and how much out the door?
$7,000 dollars. Still had all 12 bars.
The Honda Insight technically has the most "heritage".
Ugly. Ugly.. with an extra slab of Ugly thrown on top. I'd rather WALK than look at that Ugly Prius every time I have to go somewhere. Thanks for the review, guys.. You two are tons of fun!
Piano white: Chevrolet Volt. Great looking interior accent IMO. Speaking of the Volt, would rather that 100% than this.
Piano white looks good on the Volt.
Had a 2010 and loved it. Now a 2018 Prime Premium I think it’s a middle tier, and first walked away from the dealer when we saw the interior. Tried the Niro and the Volt but came back to the Prime. Likes, we’re at 9000 miles and averaging 115 mpg, oh we’re in the US. I love the smoothness of transitioning between electric and gas motors. For storage and carrying my artwork, I don’t like the raised trunk because of battery space and the transition to the seats when folded down. I also have the large screen and the glare and the functions are big negatives. The piano black plastic I barely can stand and my wife has a dust cloth and wipes it down daily. I like that I can charge my phone while driving wirelessly, but I can also plug in with USB. We mostly like listening to Pandora and Podcasts which work from our iPhones with the Toyota app, I think that’s how it functions. The glove box is tiny, and won’t hold anything else with all the manuals. The other things you pointed out like the heated seats buttons are in a bad location, and making changes on the screen for music, navigation, temp controls are hazards when driving. The automating dimming of bright lights isn’t perfect and I’ve pissed off approaching vehicles when the brights don’t go off quickly. I don’t use the drifting beyond the white line feature which takes control of the steering wheel. I have hardly learned anything about these features, and would love a straight forward tutorial video on the options with all the controls. We mostly drive errands around town, and one long trip loaded with my heavy sculptures, we averaged 54mpg. Still miss our red 2010, and looking at Prius V for hauling my artwork versus this. Too bad they ended those models. Thanks for making this fun, StraightPipes.
Hi guys, I agree on most observations you've done, but you are wrong on 2 items:
- the driver's seat DOES have a lumbar support, cannot be overseen on the seat's side @3:15
- the 'gearbox' on the prius is an e-cvt, not cvt! Although it is more like a kind of power split device, integrating the power inlet from the ICE and the electric motor
Please do more research before posting it, it will make your videos more valuable!
Assume it hasn't changed from older Prius cars, the B selection *doesn't* increase regeneration--it backdrives the engine to help scrub off speed.
"I like how Prius looks." - Say by no one except Yuri.
The 2020 addresses most of their complaints. They moved the heated seat switches next to the cup holders, added visor extenders (though sliding visors would have been better), and added apple car play and alexa. They also added a couple usb charge ports for the rear seats and a fifth seat.
I have the same shirt!!!! Puritan!!! My ex bought it for me. She’s married now. 😔
You can turn off the reverse beep with an OBD2 scanner and a 3rd party app for about 1/3 of what a Toyota dealership would charge you. They quoted me upwards of $75 and said it would take an hour. I plugged in my Carista OBD2 scanner, downloaded their app and used their free trial period option. I turned it off and changed a few other settings in less than 15 minutes.
I have piano black in my car, couldn't agree more. Hate it.
Worst!!
Thank god i dont have a single piece in my car
You can't use this car for Uber/Lyft btw (for anyone wondering). No rear middle seat.
Handling of a Prius is poor, especially the steering. It just feels like you're not connected to the wheels.
But, pulling away from the lights up to about 15 miles per hour is brilliant. Seems to out accelerate most cars up to that speed thanks to the electric motors.
Did you find that?
Definitely helps in the city.
Lol
I have the Prius Prime and it handles pretty well. Much better than my '07. Get this car better tires and it'll give you a run for the money.
I drive my parents’ Prius Prime and use this advantage to pass cars at traffic lights. Also, driving an electric car or hybrid in electric mode makes you more comfortable with flooring the pedal and makes you quicker, because you don’t hear the engine noise and think about “oh gosh I’m using too much fuel”. I have it in EV mode and floor it, and I accelerate with the full 98HP. The Audi next to me would use 1/5 throttle and accelerate with maybe 50HP.
@@lespaulranger Yep, tyres help a lot. I've replaced mine with Michelin that use much more fuel but drives so much better in the wet and snow
@@ArthurEmbleton Michelin makes the best tires around. I use them on my bike as well.
I totally agree with you about the infotainment system. The smaller screen is WAY better.
When are they gonna release Amazon "Prime" car?
Junfeng Ou or an Optimus Prime truck?
I bought this car in June. LOOOOOOOOOOVE IT! I got the base model ($27,000USD) I travel 19 miles to work. In the summer it gets me there and almost back on all electric. (Almost, about 2 miles shy from house) winter is another story. Under 30 degrees, gets me to work on one charge, that's it. 30-40 gets me to work, and about half back. I don't have that big screen, or the annoying lack of buttons. Mine comes with heated seats and mirrors, that's all I needed. Plus, I'm going to have a started installed at dealership for $500. I won't have a fancy app I have to subscribe to monthly and I can remotely start my car at work. Antistatic spray keeps dust off piano black. I keep a cloth in car. No biggie. No, it doesn't jump off the line, slow start, but I only pay for gas every 6 weeks, best payoff ever!
Also I drive mine in power mode all the time. Once it runs out of electric, it the only tolerable setting to drive in. Breaks are stupid tight. They didn't mention how grabby they are. I guess Toyota wants you to coast to every stop.
One last thing, the first thing I did when my car was delivered was turn off the beeping reverse noise!!!! Best thing I ever did. It only beeps once, and if you get too close to something, then it double beeps
Love prius technology, I don't like design of this car...I like to have vw golf with this technology...
In 2005, I bought a gen 2 prius because I thought it was important to support hybrid vehicles by actually buying one. It was surprisingly roomy, with an airy interior and tons of cargo space. It was great on gas and utterly reliable and even though it had zero sportiness, I came to love it for saving me a ton of money at the pump and being a truly excellent city vehicle. Yes, it was more appliance than auto, and you didn’t drive it as much as “Pilot” it but it was brilliant.
Then came the Gen 3. Instead of actually improving the handling and performance, they added a bit of extra swoop to the exterior body lines, and traded an open cockpit for a “sportier” design with a massive center console that ate tons of space and made the car actually feel smaller. The already great MPG was made a bit better but not enough to justify the noticeable increase in price.
I had high hopes for the 4th Gen car. Word through the prius car forums was that Toyota was focused on improving handling, ride quality and performance. Then it debuted, looking like the misshapen love child of a Geo Storm and the Toyota Mirai. It was a real kick in the nads. the Gen 2 was no beauty, but it had a kind of aerodynamic wedge shape that was at least inoffensive. This newest generation has all that bizarre white and black plastic and the center console stack looks like earth Vader’s head. It drives more like the car we wanted, but it looks like they welded bits of different cars together. It’s a science project gone haywire.
Maybe that, in part, explains why sales of this new model are half of what they were at their peak. I hope the plummeting sales figures helps toyota gets the message. There are plenty of good hybrid vehicles to choose from now. They need to stop focusing on standing out and work more on fitting in
I hate the exterior look
The question is, is there anyone who likes the exterior ?
Not me the back look weird
@Zack Smith Do you really though? If you like the car because of its philosophy and coolness, I can understand. But the design...I mean come on. That Prius looks like a home appliance.
@Zack Smith The back of it looks like some big puckered lips.
At least it's better than the regular Prius.
You can turn off the reverse beep with using an OB2 adapter and using the app Christine
Will Movember Yuri be coming back
Sorry no. I’ll bring it back next spring.
There is another mode you guys missed. Charge Mode. Hold the HV/EV button down and the car enters charge mode and charges while driving. On the open highway it will put an 80% charge in the battery in less than an hour.
Boo! No lumbar support!! Hyundai gives it in ioniq.
Next review Honda insight please. please!
It has lumbar support.
I have a 2007 toyota pruis with almost 300k miles and it still runs like a champ!!!!
I have the normal prius from mid 2018 the most expensive version for about 34k€. I have to say from day to day I really love it more and more...
Can you guys review the Honda insight? The new one lol
Yeah I agree. The wheel is small; a bit like it was sinking. I was thinking of getting one. Hey guys you didn't mention how the back seat felt fit.
Those cars are pretty fast
Said no-one ever. . . .
Any car is fast if you think this is.
@@Robert-goose1 Maybe compared to walking :)
LOL sure
Hell yeah. I got gapped by one the other day
This is not just regular CVT, this is magnetic locking, torque converter + braking and recuperation system with 2 engines/brakes/generators bla bla bla - there is no chain or belt as normal CVT, magnetic field works as torque passing element here, sometimes direct lock 1:1. But there is no big difference from CVT when driving, except smoother start (no need direct torque to wheels with higher revs). But anyway it's a CVT feeling, it's just for cruising not driving :)
DONNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Doesn't matter. We grateful that he supported at all
Good video. More reviews of hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles please. Specifically the Chrysler Pacifica plug-in hybrid. I own a 2012 Prius Plug-In Hybrid and love it. It has averaged 70 mpg over 90,000 miles. I also loved the 2005, 2008 & 2010 Prius I owned before it. My son has over 200,000 miles on the 2008 and it still gets over 45 mpg.
Try a Tesla model 3!!
While BEV like Model 3, Bolt and Leaf etc, it is nice to see this kind of PHEV that gets ridiculous mileage while offering an everyday usable ~45km EV range for the commute that won't lock you down to the woefully inadequate public charging infrastructure we have in Canada.
The looks is an acquired taste - I'm actually liking the styling of the Prime over the regular Prius Hybrid.
U guys should test Honda insight
yea!
I actually like how this one looks
this is just a japanese knockoff of a mclaren p1
😂😂Good one, my dear man!
I came here because you told me to in the bolt review
