I started Taekwondo classes about a month ago after mulling over it for 6 months. I went for a few weeks and now I haven't been in... like 3 or 4 weeks. I want to get back to it but I feel ashamed that I've abandoned it for a bit. I feel so stupid because I don't know what I'm doing and I have such terrible coordination and I'm so slow to process information and I give up easily. But I'm also so sick of letting fear control my life and preventing me from doing new things and growing. I want to be more disciplined and confident. Anyway, sorry about my rant. Thank you for the tutorial to jog my memory. Maybe I'll practice it at home. I probably won't. It's 11pm right now.
I started training Taekwondo in third grade, and we stopped after about 3 months. Now it's been 6 years and I want to get back to training again. Thank you Sir.
I found you today and I really really LOVE you! My husband and I are beginners and don‘t have any belts yet (we‘re new!), but we wanted to practice the 1st poomsae. Thank you so much for making your Videos! They‘re helping US so much! And… sorry for my Bad english; I‘m from Germany ;) wish you the best and a huge THANK YOU, SHAWN!! ❤

64 years old here. I never thought I could get back to the shape I am in and move like I do again. My instructor is 62. He gives me the evil eye when I say I'm old. I'm 3 months into training.
Interesting and insightful video. I remember taking tae kwon do when I was a child. It didn’t last long do to my parents relationship.. anyway, I’m now 26 and looking for a hobby to keep me active without putting to much stress on my body since my job already kicks my butt. Is it to late to get started? How do I find the right school? Is it expensive with all the uniforms and belts?
Hey Crispy, that's a great question.. with a few things to consider! #1: Is it too late to start? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Taekwondo physical and psychological benefits will help anyone, at any age! #2: How do I find the right school? By perusing Google Maps you can find a few of the schools around you.. and look at their reviews. Not every student/parent will leave a good review... but any upset parent will ABSOLUTELY leave a BAD review.. so look for these! #3: Is it expensive with all the uniforms and belts? This is another good question... depending on if it's a "McDojang" or not... you can usually find out with a phone call! Ask about the price of the uniform, how long between belt promotions and the cost of each, how much is a blackbelt exam, is there any registration fees? You can compare the cost of the local schools and figure out which one works best for you. Let me know if you have any further questions as you go along, I'm happy to help another practitioner along the way💪🏻
I know it’s best to go to a school but for now until I’m able to go to one I will be practicing this stuff in a mirror thanks for helping me get started
Flexibility is just one part of it. I’m not flexible but I still enjoy taekwondo! All I can say is return to training and watch your body change for the better👍🏻👍🏻
Thnx for this! Was really hight belt n fighter as a teen. Im an adult now n decided to return. I am getting used to the korean commands again. Was worried but aparently they can give my grade back if i prove i stil know it. Great tips tho dude very helpful video 😇 My body automatically remembers most of the stances n reaction force but iv noticed many ppl are skipping it in class . Fortunatley i have a gud tutor n he corrects these things. Still nice to see videos tho i will be watching more depending on when i grade 👍🙂
Great beginners guide! Very informative and nice. One question though. Why teach them that you need your toes to be pointing straight when performing Ap-chagi? To my knowledge, this kick should hit with the ball of your foot to avoid breaking your toes when hitting something. Again, very informative and nice. A good beginners guide for any white belt starting out.
Beginners kick with the bal deung (top of the foot) because the insole (ap chuk) requires good muscle control. We usually start transitioning to the one you mentioned at the intermediate level 👍🏻

It’s not the belt, it’s how you train and use the taekwondo. Belts mean different things to different practitioners… and we have students with disabilities who earn new belts. We take you where you’re at, and grade from there. I think if you put too much stock in your belt, you rely too much on ‘status’ and not enough on your training-so we can get lazy in our practice. I say be happy with the belt you have, and always think of yourself as a beginner!!

Ah, that makes sense. It is a difficult kick to do 100% correct, despite its simplicity. So it does make sense that you would do it gradually.

At arae makkie and the others, how are the legs, like is it symetrical to the hands?
Low block (arae makki) and high block (olgul makki) will always be symmetrical with the leg-yes!
Yes you right but why you move your body in punches?
You’re supposed to rotate the torso to generate the power in your punches… while trying to keep your shoulders relaxed!
