I have friends who spent years of expat time in Hungary. They used to call Hungarian the heavenly language. Because it takes an eternity to learn it.
Yeah 😅 it’s because in its own language “tree” but I’m not the one to complain since I’m from Bulgaria and we use Cyrillic 😂
That means a hell language if you can not learn it...is not heavenly...🤣

@@meganmorris6155 Not really at this moment, but I Hope i can visit Budapest in the fall. In 2019 i was 1 week in Krakow and then i took a flixbus to Budapest and spendt 2 weeks there. Krakow is also a great city. I Hope i can to to Warszawa soon, i should have been there in the summer 2020,but not possible. I have not been there since 1992,so was really looking forward to it, im sure it have changed alot. What about ur plans? Cheers.

Esztergom is a really cool place to visit. Cheap raill and really comfy trains. The Basilica there is beautiful. Spent two weeks in Budapest in 2018. River cruise at night and the tour of the Parliament building was memorable. Churches are beautfiful.

If you see that line and words on some taxis: "private"... just ignore them. Dodge them like the plague. As a Hungarian It's just my very humble advise.
Hungary is Magyarorszag. Magyar is the word for Hungarian (both language and people).

Go to spots like Esztergom, and Szob very nice places along the Danube. Get not only the Goulash but pay only in Forints.

Go. Went in 2019 and it's awesome. Make sure to get out of Budapest and visit places like the Danube Bend, Eger, and Lake Balaton among other places.
@@michaeltravelingtheworld4688 @Sarah & Marek Yes! The Danube Bend is particularly beautiful. I recommend visiting Visegrád, where one of our most famous castle located. We have a tradition centered summer festival here (Visegrádi Nemzetközi Palotajátékok), with costume parade, medieval weapon fights, market for hand crafted goods and of course delicious local barbecue food.

Add Pécs too wine+ it was the European cultural capital( a lot of Turkish and roman building in/ under the city), so a lot to see (and Szeged, because it has a beautiful and big city center , rebuilt in th 19 th century) so these two towns are worth to visit.
Sry I forgot Hévíz , it is a natural spa, but it is a lake, very unique. At least worth to google it if you are interested.

My grandparents emigrated to the USA from Hungary, so I always wanted to go visit the country they came from. I spent two weeks in Budapest, which was not nearly enough time. Such a beautiful and interesting city. I stayed near the Opera house in Pest. There was a metro station near the hotel, so that's how I got around (besides a ton of walking). And, yes, they do often check your validated fare, and I've been told you do NOT want to get a ticket. I guess they're pretty steep. Anyway, I'd love to go back again and spend at least two more weeks!
You can get the citizenship if you want to learn a bit of Hungarian. Free pass to any European country, you don’t have to wait in the long queues for immigration because you’re “one of us”.
3:45 that is NOT palinka. You do NOT want to drink palinka AFTER eating. Palinka is in small shot glass and its very strong.

Jó napot! Eger is great! It sits at the base of the Bükk mountains, surrounded by vineyards. I lived there one year and had the opportunity to travel all over the country. I particularly liked Szeged, Pécs and Kecskemét.
Hungarian 4G network is in the top 10 in the world, you shouldn't have problem using data.

I love paprika! 90% of my favorite dishes are made with paprika (Halászlé, pörkölt, gulyáslevesek, hortobágyi húsos palacsinta, lecsó, paprikás krumpli galuskával és kolbásszal..stb.)
One transport tip (note may have changed): If booking night trains, it’s easier & cheaper to book with Czech Railway / Austrian ÖBB than it is with MAV (Hungarian Railway). When I wanted to the “Metropolitan” night train between Prague and Budapest, it was also cheaper to go P>B instead of B>P.

Budapest is not equal to Hungary. It's an important fact.
-You can use a bank card to pay in most places. Visa and MC are both accepted. Contactless and NFC payment are becoming more popular.
-Lot of thermal baths in Budapest and in Hungary.
-Instead of Uber we have Bolt. Also all taxis in Budapest are required to be yellow and to have yellow number plates.
-Carsharing is available: Greengo, MOL Limo, Sharenow Budapest
-According to legend Hunor and Magor were two ancestors of the nation, therefore the words Hungarian and Magyar.
-The language depends on where you come from. If you speak turkish or some southern slavic language it will be easy to learn but for chinese or american english speakers it's usually blood and tears.
-It's pronounced "Budapesht" :)
I went to Budapest in 2019 and used Bolt (their Uber) and found it much simpler and more affordable to use than the taxis. I totally agree with you on the Air BNB rec, amazing the accommodations you can score there for very inexpensive.

The natural environment is very beautiful all over the country, we have probably the most thermal spas per sqaure km/mi. It is not all about Budapest. Ticket validation is not necessary if you buy a daily, 3-7 days public transportation pass.
Don't worry about the bad rates or commission when changing money. You can use your credit card at almost every vendor in Hungary.

A piece of advice is that if you have several free days to go to the countryside, there is a lot of novelty and interesting things there as well.

Just one thing I missed. I didn't hear you mention Margaret Island (Margit-sziget) in your videos. It is a beautiful park island in the middle of the Danube not too far off the Parliament, that is accessible from Margaret Bridge (Margit-híd) or Árpád Bridge. It is like a smaller equivalent of New Yorks Central park for the people of Budapest. It has two public baths, the "Sport" bath and Palatinus, also there are some ruins of a monastery, a small petting zoo, a big Fountain at the Margaret bridge side, and on the other end there is the "Music Fountain", and a nice flowergarden with a little pond. It is a perfect spot to chill when you had enough of the 'city'. You can also rent pedal carts if you want to. If you haven't seen it yet, go check it out.

Budapest is a wonderful city. I love the yellow line I think it is with the little tune it plays before the doors close.

The baths in budapest, idk wtf they are called but they are amazing. Its a load of pools ranging from public to lazy river which are all heated to something like 30-40 degrees celsius and is just incredible. Im not sure how they operate now atm with covid they might not be available but if they ever do (or are already) accesible definitely go.
Some baths' water is not heated, but cooled down. The Széchenyi Thermal Baths' water is 74-76 degree Celsius. It has to be cooled down. 😊
The baths are open atm but you can only visit them if you are vaccinated and you have immunity certificate.

The locals want to practice their English? 😁 Btw, the Mormons manage to get to a good intermediate level within a year, so it can't be that difficult.
On the language, here's a little history. According to legend there were 2 brothers, Magyor and Hunor. From Hunor came the Huns and from Magyor came the Magyars (Hungarians). The Huns under Atilla came from Central Asia conquered much of Europe in the 5th century until they were defeated. Then in 896, Árpad and his Magyars came to the Carpathian Basin and created Hungary. HUNgary. Also, everything else is spot on.

I l live in Budapest and Mark gives some great advice, the best place to change money if you need to is next to the Blaha Metro Sation at Arany Change on 5 Erzsebet Kerut, whatever you do NOT change it with someone you meet, you will more than likely get fake or old bills

They WILL accept the EURO and some menus at restaurants will have a menu with prices in Forints or EURO. Don't try to pay in dollars especially when using a credit card.

Budapest is a fantastic city. One of Europe's most beautiful in my opinion. We stayed a few days near lake Balaton but I found that a bit lost glory. We also toured the countryside which is pretty poor but still a lot better than Albania or Romania. I would definitely visit Budapest again. About the rest of Hungary I am a bit less enthousiastic though there definitily some very nice places.
There are some beautiful cities like Sopron, Győr, Pécs.
100 dlls is about 40000 huf meals here are about 7500-9000 huf per person.
Rent a car budget in city center i paid 397 with insurance for 5 days
4G is pretty much aver all in Hungary, even in smaller towns. If you're on a train or just walking in some really remote area you might not have it everywhere, but where you would reasonably need it, it's there.

The money points you mentioned are awesome because I had this problem when I went to Hungary before Covid. I changed currency in Milan airport and I didn't notice that I almost lost 25% of the value as commission, in Budapest airport they took less and when I returned the money before I leave through an exchange house I guess I wasted even more. I need to know one point though, sometimes when we travel they ask us if we pay by card if we want to pay in my country's currency or in the visited country currency what option is best here?

Widely spoken is an exaggeration. I am Hungarian, I've been living and working in the UK for 15 years, so If you bump into me or someone like me in Hungary when you're there, you'll have no problem. But most people don't speak foreign languages well in my country. People over the age of 40, people in their fifties and sixties and above don't speak a word of English or any foreign language for that matter.
Reason is that in the communist era they were only taught Russian in school, there were a few other options as well but not in small towns or country side villages and cities, mainly only in Budapest. I am 40 this year and only had the option to learn Russian until I was 13 years old, then I picked up German and English in school. Despite my parents learning Russian all their youth, they hardly remember it and still can't speak it.
So if you visit my country don't expect older people to speak English, even younger people's knowledge is quite basic because they only learnt it in school, majority of them never had to use it in every day life. I believe in the list of countries about foreign language proficiency, my country is in a very bad position, maybe only the UK is worse. 😁
@Maria Hewitt Yes, but I meant english people only, not foreigners. English people don't speak languages, they expect everyone else to understand english.
@Maria Hewitt Yes, it is but Hungarian ppl don't speak foreign languages. Obviously there are exceptions but in general if you stop someone on the street they won't speak english, about 8 out of 10 times roughly..
It is, by the youth and younger generation. Not necessarily by the older generation (there are some exceptions tho) so try to talk to kids and you'll be fine😂
You named the language. The name for the country is Magyarorszag.
Don't take the regular taxis in Budapest. Use an App called Bolt. Bolt is like Uber/Lyft but works with taxis. It's much cheaper.

What I would have liked more is the exact prices from the things you describe. You often say how much something costs in this and that country but here I'd like to know more than "it's cheap"

Food takes long, because all restaurant make it fresh, at time you order it.
Look at the buttom of the menu(s), where stating all food made from scratch , takes 20-25 minutes to be served.
Unlike here in the U.S. all food is pre-made just warmed up when you ordered at any restaurant.
In Hungary Instead of Uber has an app called Oszkár telekocsi, butt its almost the same.
I've noticed this in your past couple videos, there's a weird jittering, or shaking, in the B-roll shots. only happening w/these vids.
I would just like to add that do not use those ATMs shown in this video(Euronet) They charge a much higher fee. Use any other atm you can find.
And just install bolt which is a similar app to uber.
that's exactly true, they're all over europe and the interesting thing is that the company is from the silicon valley (california) so all that exorbitant commission goes there while they're using that misleading european name
Speaking of not taking the conversion rates that stores will offer (because you don’t have any foreign money on you):
We went to Canada just before the pandemic, and before we could find a place to convert our money, I saw a street vendor selling poutine, and we were starving, so he let us pay with American money FOR AN EVEN EXCHANGE. So we paid $5 US for something that cost $5 CAN. But it was worth it! 😂😂😂
Haha i run out of fuel(almost) at the Italian-Austrian border in the Alps, and their freakin fule station won't accept any of my credit cards. I didn't have euros on me just Swiss Frank so i i kindly asked the guy next to me if he could gimmie 10 EUR for 20 CHF. I was so happy! (In reality 20 CHF is worth 18 euros not 10 but i did not care)

i may be wrong but i believe Walter lives in Europe, however, from 15th June the EU is opening frontiers for tourists within the EU countries plus a very few non EU countries which are very much ahead with vaccinations, uses same vaccines (AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna etc) and have had consistently decreasing Covid cases, this includes Israel and the US

@@cashstore1 there will be a loophole soon, some matches of the football European championship will be held in Budapest, you can come in for those, but I’m not entirely sure about the details. Also, I was pretty sure about the time because that fan he mentions who gave him tips in the city was actually me, he posted a photo on Instagram about us, so the time stamp was pretty certain xD
there is a central taxi regulation in place in budapest. it means every taxi have to be registered, every taxi company must have a call center in place and the prices are the same for all the companies. there are some taxi companies which run a phone application, i suggest NEVER ask for the taxi in the hotel, because it is more than possible that the staff in the hotel is in the play with some illegal freelancer taxi drivers. and please, i beg you guys, try foods other then goulash and hortobágyi. most of the tourist areas make terrible goulash, i know very few restaurants where i dare ordering goulash (or pencake filled with meat - hortobágyi). those kind of food are usually made out of the leftover meat from yesterday. there of course places where you can order goulash without the risk of getting shitty food, but thoose places are either super expensive or are outside of the tourist areas.
