I haven’t been everywhere on this beautiful planet...but as an Englishman who has lived here since November 2019 I’ve found my paradise. ❤️Slovenia.

Sorry to bump this months later; wanted to ask: How did you adapt to language restrictions? Was English sufficient to get you through and settled?

@@VizierElixir Hi, in the capital city literally everyone speaks English. It’s the language tourists use and I’d say 90% plus speak it. Less so in the outskirts I’m guessing.

@@edzanjero353 if you have the means to support yourselves and can prove it then yes, easily. Depending where is Slovenia you want to live, the property isn’t cheap and neither is food, but it isn’t Norway prices…it can be done, even if it’s more expensive than some places in the US, it’s a nicer, safer, more beautiful place to live. The people are amazing.

A thing about recycling: it's actually mandatory to recycle in Slovenia. We even have inspectors checking our garbage to make sure we seperate our trash and you get quite a hefty fine if you don't do it correctly. Most of us are fully supportive of this because we genuinely care about it a lot.

    • @arthas1641

zakaj pa recikliramo? zato da se v komunalnih podjetjih lažje pobere tiste snovi, ki so profitabilne. ostalo (nekje 80% smeti) se skuri oz. zakoplje

Being slovenian is knowing you live in a small hidden paradise and wanting to share the experience, but still wanting it to stay kind of a secret. The issue is that the ever growing influx of tourists is getting prioritized by the government and companies, that are already trying to ruin the natural beauty by changing the land to build resorts or something. Also a lot of landlords now throw out students during summer to accomodate tourists, more and more apartments are becoming airbnb's, prices in bars get higher, ...

    • @supersecularboypants

It breaks my heart to see greed ruling over natural beauty.
I guarantee people would not agree with selling our natural water sources and government land, just to see a multinational company come and take it’s resources. That is, in my eyes one of the biggest crimes you can make, and the current ruling party is making this possible.
And here I was, thinking we’re living in a democratic society. They all need to be locked up, especially Janez Janša, he needs to go back to jail, he hasn’t even finished his prison sentence yet.
This is the TRUE current state of Slovenia. Greedy politicians ready to sell Slovenia’s greatest treasures.

The first time I remember doing the same cave with the train (Postojna) and staying on the sea in Opatija. The second time we saw more, the cave castle (Predjama), Ljubljana and of course Lake Bled. I ended up saving money on food by eating at my hotel in Lake Bled rather than in the tourist places and it was still quite good.

When we wanted sparkling mineral water with our first lunch in Ljubljana, we asked if they had San Peligrino. The waiter disgustedly replied that they had SLOVENIAN mineral water, which is better. We didn’t really care which mineral water it was, and the Slovenian water was fine, but this was our first taste of Slovenian “pride”. While staying in Lake Bled we drove to a rural restaurant a few kilometers west of town, on a very dark rainy night, and we had a huge platter of mixed meats, rice, potatoes, veggies, etc. more than the two of us could eat (it was called a “half platter” by the way) and it was very cheap, not much over 10 euro. It was kind of early-season and it was out of town, but it was a great price of lots of good food. And we agree, Slovenia is a hidden gem, safe, clean, good roads and beautiful countryside.....kind of a Slavic Austria with a bit of Slavic Italy near Trieste.

My dad is so proud of Slovenian mountains and nature and so on that when my Catalan friend visited, she thought he was a dangerous nationalist because of how he was saying it. I had to explain that our pride is coming from an opposite place to some overly fasist countries, as we8vr always been small, always occupied by someone else, a nation of farmers, so learning to love what we do have is very much of self-preservation and finally having our own country.

Your portrayal of Slovenia is exceptional and beautifully captures our country's essence. I especially laughed about the emphasis on our sense of pride! It couldn't be more accurate-funnily enough, I never noticed it was so strong until I moved abroad! And yes, we have been recycling for nearly 40 years! Ha ha. Absolutely gorgeous country and people. I travelled solo and on local buses and trains. Wished I had a rental car to get off the beaten track. But you are right about the cost, certainly have to prepare for the expense, was quite shocked! Came from Venice and Ljubljana was more expensive to eat out than Venice! But I did have the most incredible prawn pasta in my life in Ljubljana, it was unreal (but at Euro 40 it had to be!). Lake Bled and surrounds was incredible and I did not find it overpriced for the value provided in food and accommodation - Air BnB under Euro 100 per night. The Vintgar Gorge walk is an absolute must. Will definitely plan to visit again, I think two weeks with a rental car would be amazing.

And yes definitely go for the rental car on your next visit, there are so many places you could visit and even just the drive in the countryside is extremely rewarding (I do recommend a drive trough Triglav national park or a visit to Logar Valley in summer or early fall). Hahaha, well I really hope that was the best pasta of your life, because 40€ for a single dish is absolutely ridiculous. It seems you managed to find the single most expensive restaurant in the city. Even 30€ for the full meal (3 courses and a glass of wine) is kind of on the expensive side.
