    Finally, someone is playing this correctly! All these other drummers can't hear that hi hat shuffle? And I didn't even consider the hi hat work on the breakdown sections! Steve has a good ear!! Master this song correctly and you'll improve your drumming a ton!

    Was a "duffer" drummer for 30-odd years; I love "pocket" drumming and you, Mr. Tocco, show us all that playing a "straight" rock pattern is one thing but playing it with attention to subtleties and FEEL is QUITE another. Roger Hawkins, the famed Muscle Shoals Studio drummer was an absolute master at this and you come in a VERY CLOSE second! Bravo!

Thank you for noticing the hi-hat chips and the hi-hat bell stuff. I am proud of both of those little details because I've never seen another drummer do them on this song--including Joey Kramer (the original drummer). Good luck with you cover band career!!!

      Steve Tocco I have a decent studio with audio and video capabilities, any advice should I decide to start doing some cover videos myself?

    • @SteveToccoDrummer
      @SteveToccoDrummer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      "A decent studio" sounds like way more than what I have. My entire system consists of the following: 1) an unfinished basement, 2) an iPhone (to play the original songs), 3) an old Yamaha analog MG16 mixer, 4) some old microphones,5) an RCA-to-1/8" cable and, 6) a Zoom Q4 camera. The drums mics and iPod go into the mixer. I use the RCA-to-1/8" cable to connect the audio from the mixer into the camera. Video and audio are recorded at the same time on the camera. When I finish recording the song I download the file directly from the camera onto TH-cam. There are no effects, compressors, limiters or gates. There is no video or audio post production of any kind. My videos are boring because I just have one camera but it's also very simple. That's why I have 325+ drum covers. I can record a dozen songs in one day. Let me know if you post any covers. I'd like to see you play!

    Great cover my good dude.
    This song always reminds me of a certain day.
    A hot summer night in 1988. My buddy's band was at a rehearsal studio in Rutherford NJ. They had no singer (their singer actually got a record deal and split leaving them high & dry). Although I was a drummer I also had some pipes at the time so I stepped in on vocals to help the band out. So they had all original songs. 2 covers, LA Guns & Aerosmith Sweet Emotion. The drummer could not get the drums down for sweet emotion. It was pissing me off so I demanded his sticks and counted out 1 2 3 4 And we did sweet emotion on the first shot. Guitarist made me laugh. He asked his drummer if he could sing and if I could remain on drums. Anyway those were good times. I was 18. Living The Dream.
    Had to share my story 🤘😎

    • @SteveToccoDrummer
      @SteveToccoDrummer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great story! Thank for sharing it. I had heard this song for decades but the first time I played it was with my cover band. I'll never forget when we ran through it at rehearsal. The guys played the song exactly like the record and everybody sings so the vocals were spot on perfect. I couldn't wait to get out and play it at a gig. Every time we do the song we get a great response from the audience. It's such a great song and so fun to play. Thanks again for sharing your story!

      Thanks for noticing that little hi-hat chirp detail although I don't think it's a high hat in the original recording. It sounds like a cymbal recorded backward. The left hand part I came up with sort of emulates the sound. I came up with another little thing--I play a simulated triangle part on the bell of the high hat in the last verse (at 2:52). It's a little detail but fun and cool to play. When I play it at live gigs other drummers tend to notice it. Thanks again!!!!

    Spot on. As a fellow drummer, I know the difference. Those high hat sweeps are a great idea. Actually on the record, I always thought that is tape being played backwards. Steve,
    Been watching your drum covers for sometime now. I'm always amazed how "spot on" you always are. Awesome skills!!
    I've been self learning for a year now but have zero natural music talent. I'm learning to read music, playing rudiments, sticking exercises etc. I really seem to struggle with any attempt to play to music by ear and even just playing to sheet music. Any pointers for an old rookie? How long have you been playing? How long before you could play a cover that was decent sounding? Are you listening to a click?
    Thanks.

    • @SteveToccoDrummer
      @SteveToccoDrummer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your kind support! It's been a LONG road for me. I started playing drums when I was 18, which means I've been playing 37 years. A lot of those years I couldn't practice much. I always had to balance practicing drums with going to college, daytime career, raising a family and so forth. I started playing in bands less than a year after I started playing the drums. I've been in all kinds of bands ever since. I sucked for a long time but kept working at it and wouldn't quit. I wish there was some magic insight into explaining how to play by ear. It's something I've always been able to do. Just keep practicing the way you are--reading music, rudiments and exercises. Eventually your drumming will take shape and you'll be jamming for sure. I am not listening to a click in the headphones. I'm listening to the original track so I don't 'have to play the song through loudspeakers. It makes for a cleaner recording sound. Good luck and keep practicing!!!!
