You Americans love to spend tomorrow's money, and other people's money maybe. ... We Chinese love to save money." "We've been poor for so many years: When we made money we put it in the banks because someday we know that disaster is coming so we can spend the money," "When the economy is bad, we still have the money to spend - you guys probably don't, you worry." - Jack Ma (Alibaba founder) Qoutes from 2015 CGI Annual Meeting in New York. just think about it. Gives a spark in the brain
America will not grow at the same rate as China. So its inevitable that China will rise and America will stagnate. America had its day in the sun, it will continue to have some influence on science and technology, but China will become more and more influencial on the global stage, and more things will be pioneered by China well into the space age.
***** Agreed, but alot of the ghost cities was a 60 minutes sensationalist piece. They don't really exist anymore. At least not the same ones as before. One example is the city of Ziejiang. During the report it was a newly built city, but the people took over 5 years to fully move into and make the city thrive. Similarly now there are newer cities that are being planned and built and the turnaround time will be around 5 to 10 years. This is because China needs to house and urbanise another 600 million chinese. This is no easy feat, but don't take my word for it, research it. Actually China also made a ghost city in Angola, and now its also just beginning to fill up with people. I just think there is more than meets the eye in these media headlines.
***** I think the Chinese market is a very delicate one, and is prone to rises and falls. Their stock market suffered tremendously in 2015. And maybe the factory that closed in the US was banking on major projects to keep them well funded. But take away one or two big contracts to those failing factories and this can spell major doom to an already precarious state of affairs. The same was happening in Australia with the mining boom. But now the next big thing is white gold apparently. Everyone is scrambling to supply China's growing middle class with dairy and especially their insatiable need for baby milk formula after their own safety scandals rocked China in previous years. And with regards to the aging population. China seems to be addressing that lately with a two child policy effective as of this year.
***** Well thats a shame, in Australia Aldi (German supermarket franchise) is sweeping the nation, it is threatening local supermarket chains too. So it is really happening everywhere. Oh and you should look up seasteading, it might not be a thing yet, but give it a decade or two, and with the global warming problems looming, alot of these days might return, but in a different and unexpected form. Cheers you are also very insightful, thanks for the discussion.
Soviet Union is not Russia now. Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 and "now" it is 15 independent republics. Russia still controls many of them (Belorussia, Armenia, Kazakhstan), but three are in the EU, and Ukraine and Georgia are on the way to the Western World.
China models may not be the best model in the world, but it is the one poses LEAST threat to the rest of the world. Building roads/bridges/ports is much better than American way of bombing roads/bridges/ports for the Belt and Road countries for sure.
Great content minus the ads of the book! Wish, he had used that time in putting in more facts and international stand with respect to US. Perhaps adding to that, more time on US itself.
The real question might be: what will freedom look like in 2025 in America and the PRC and will it matter? Yes, probably for innovation and creation and rethinking how society works.
It has always been my prediction for the last 20 years that if China 🇨🇳 would adopt and become a fully Democratic country in the East. China will take over the United States 🇺🇸 economically, but not militarily. However, on the military development and progress, China 🇨🇳 has learned the value of education from America for decades. But China will never get par with the US 🇺🇸 and will still lag behind in military technology and economically.
im studyin in China thing which i noticed is may be or for sure China may surpass U.S because of Silk road new project with Pakistan but poltically and physiclogically China is wayy far behind America, White people syndrome is so high that the rent any any white people just sit in their company even they have no connection with that field and there are jobs which have specific color requirement that you have to be WHITE. second is Xinjiang part situation is not too good, over security checks and pressurizing people to leave Islam and leave their culture and doing all things which could aggitate fire...
SK Niazi - well said man, it's refreshing to read some more realistic thoughts on China's future. It's most definitely not all rosey... A growing middle class in China will eventually want democracy, and it will be absolute chaos when that day comes... Just to put it in context though, USA GDP per capita is $60,000, and China GDP per capita is $9,000. When you look at these figures, there is a loooooong way to go for China to catch up to the levels of prosperity in the USA. However, as I said, when they get more and more prosperous, they will eventually want democracy. This could certainly "agitate a fire" as you put it. On top of that, the environmental disasters in China at present will certainly pose many significant domestic challenges for the country. I think while China will want to continue global "outward" expansion, they will unfortunately be forced to look very much "inward" to solve countless demographic, political and environmental problems unique to China
You could say that for European nations that Europeans grew old before they got rich for nearly 2,000 years while China enjoyed prosperity for nearly 2,000 years before the modern era. At least, in that context, China had been the most blessed civilization on earth, historically speaking.
China is going to have a smaller percentage of its population in active employment because of age demographics. However, the rest of the industrialized world is going to have a similar problem because of automation. The difference is that while the smaller population of workers in China, Japan and other states with that demographic conundrum will be forced to support a larger elderly percentage of idle people, in the U.S. and Europe that smaller percentage will have to support retirees and also younger people who are unable to find gainful employment. Both populations will struggle, but I actually think that our problem in the West is more disruptive.
I do not understand how China will be able to maintain it's status as the factory of the world when living status of it's people rise and wages go up. Won't an export oriented economy collapse as labor becomes costlier? Chinese govt. artificially keeps the currency down and fudges the growth indicators. But how long can they continue like this? Won't the rise of India, Brazil etc as manufacturing hotpots change the equation ?
I don't think China wants to maintain that status for long. Being the factory of the world means you'll be the world's dumping ground for toxic byproducts/pollution, it also means labor-intensive work which translates to low-paying jobs. The real money is made in the creative sector not the manufacturing sector, the long-term goal for China would then be to transition into a knowledge economy that's driven by domestic consumers like the US and Japan. Chinese companies are already moving their factories overseas to India and SEA.
David Lee Unlike China it isn't easy to setup new polluting industries in India or other democratic nations. I don't think the manufacturing can be easily ported to other countries specially India. Also, in case of India , it is a knowledge intensive industry powered by highly educated English speaking middle classes. India can't become manufacturing hub by the very nature of the setup.
David Lee In fact, I think India like many other South East Asian countries can only develop slowly and with mostly knowledge intensive industry. Only China or perhaps some African countries have the state power strong enough to overrule environmental concerns and carry on with any industrialisation plan.
MahanXYZ You have a point. South Korea used to have an authoritarian government pre- 1980's. It gradually transformed into a democratic country after the success of its state-led industrialization effort. Same thing for Singapore in the Lee Kuan Yew era, the Chinese are just following in the footsteps of other developed countries in Asia. I'm guessing democracy is the reason why India is lagging behind China despite having similar economies in the 1960s. On the positive side, Indians and most of SEA don't have to face human rights abuse under an authoritarian government.
