Very informative video. I have f30 with n57 engine and when I bought it (55k miles) had service done at 17k 32k and 47k. Changed the oil on the next day and since then was changed every 8-10k. On 100k now with zero problems. The car goes on a long runs from time to time so oil could last even longer I suppose. I think it depends a lot of the way you drive it - if you have a heavy foot should change your oil sooner.

I believe this motor is under-engineered, a superior designer would have made the motor more robust and reliable, 58k miles is just run-in for reliable engines like Barra in-line 6 which creates similar horse power and much more with a simple tune. You also need tools specific to this motor to do simple tasks like install the crank pulley, what an engineering disaster. Clean your workshop up, paint the floor, hang your tools up tidy, take some pride in your work place.

Barra Inline 6 isnt a Diesel Engine and has a lot less torque than the beast in this video. The problem for the engine designers is that it has to pass the worlds highest emission standards in the EU. So it is not possible to make the chain or the main bearings wider because that would increase the friction/rotating mass and the emissions aswell. I've had the Barra 6 cylinder in a ford falcon as well but you just can't compare those engines. As you said the barra is easy to fix and a very simple engine. Also driving wise you cant compare them.

Agreed BMers drive nice, Bilstein would have a lot to do with this. This motor however is not setting a good example for resilience or maintenance affordability.

@@cliffharrington6500 Thats true but as I said our loved barra engine would sadly not pass the emission regulations in the EU. Those engines aren't even sold there and are just used by Ford Australia. BMW had wonderful inline 6 engines in the late 90s like the M50/M52 which were rock solid and easy to maintain.
