Keep em coming George, good stuff! Easiest way to see if your manifold is full of carbon is undo the air-charge sensor bolted onto the manifold with one 10mm bolt, check the hole in the sensor itself and make sure it's not blocked with carbon (unblock it carefully with something plastic, don't push too hard into the sensor). Then with a phone light you'll just be able to see into the manifold through the hole where the sensor came from and how bad it is. It's not a hard job to remove the manifold, decoke and refit giving the ports at the same time. A caustic soda bath will clean the manifold perfectly and won't attack the plastic, leaving it looking like it just came out the factory, in some cases giving you a noticable boost in power if it was badly coked. Don't forget to remove any sensors or electrical components before giving it a bath ;) Don't waste your money on a hydrogen clean, it will do absolutely nothing to remove carbon build up in the manifold but it will empty your pocket somewhat with no real world benefit. If your top timing chain is stretched and tensioner is loose it'll rattle on cold start for a couple of seconds, middle chain will make a wooshing sound at 1500rpm when engine is warm. Any of these noises are a cause for concern and it needs a full timing kit ASAP. N47 engines can suffer from broken chains from as little as 85,000 miles depending on the number of services and oil quality. Cheap rates for any of these jobs for George's subscribers around the Merseyside area :D

Most people assume EGR issues when rough idle on cold starts. It's a simple case of changing the engine glow plugs as they're not just there to assist compression in cold temperatures. They're used by the DME (diesel engine management system) as a sensor to ensure smooth operation of the engine. It's basic maintenance as you would change spark plugs on a petrol engine (although they are far more difficult to remove without breaking). And to anyone who thinks removing the EGR is a good idea: bear in mind the engine was designed (and it costs €Bn to make an engine) from the ground up to run with FAP and EGR. For example EGR reduces engine load / stress during light throttle applications.

Next job is to bypass the EGR etc as it’s getting to the stage where I probably have a bit of carbon build up in the injectors etc.
I've always been tempted to do an EGR delete - but then I read about burnt exhaust valves and cooked turbochargers ... as the EGR system keeps combustion temperatures down.
My best tip is use a decent oil. I used to use NAPA 5W-30 for my 67 reg F30 335D X drive N57 engine, as I got it at a heavily discounted price due to a family member working for a motor factor company, but always found that the throttle response and power produced wasn't as good as I recalled it being when using the NAPA oil. Use a good brand synthetic low ash oil. This is important for your dpf. The bottle will have a rating on the back if it’s low ash. At least in America they do. Change every 3-4000 depending on driving habits and enjoy your car. Do not under any circumstances fall for the “annual, 10,000 mile” oils they sell. In a typical car this may be okay. Glow Plugs or Water temp sensor . If the Water temp sensor is telling a wrong tempersture the engine inject like the motor is already warm so it starts bad and rough
Part of BMW’s efficient dynamics improvement to increase mpg. Electric power steering means no extra auxiliary load on the engine when driving in a straight line.
That is fine the only small downside to only mapping it is that the carbon soot build up could potentially still escape in small amounts. I've personally gone down the route of egr mapped out but I will be blanking it off after Xmas.
Do frequent oil changes, let it warm up, drive it like you stole it then let it cool down. Do this and you won't need to change anything.

Same here except I use regular diesel. It's the same fuel and I don't think additives are worth the extra price.
I'll just buy injector and exhaust system cleaning additives separately.
So how did you find somewhere to mot the car with no dpf that is the only thing stopping me
Passed no problems.. As long as it looks like it's in place it should pass
Great video George, very supportive. Since changing oil regularly is by far most important thing on these engines, pls share some sugestions on oils to be used.
But not in these
His liquid moly for bmw diesel motor is a good brand
Liqui moly 5w40
Castrol edge 10w30 ll4 approved 👌
Perfectly explained sir,cool😊
Thanks and welcome
how does soot get in the intake...? its a vacuum?
Thanks George for your videos I am going to buy one from my brother and being an Aircraft Mechanic, this estimulates my self on doing the maintenance myself other ways this project will be a lot of money. Regards from San Antonio Tx
Epic! Which aircraft do you work on? Id love to work on a Cessna!
Good luck with the project🙌🏼
Just found you on youtube George. Great info. Subbed!
Welcome aboard!
I have a bmw 2011 520d n47 . I see engine vibration while idle and so much black smoke coming from exhaust, changed air filter, oil filter , engine oil .. problem not solved . Two fault code while scanning that is 290B00 : Air system, air to EGR air mass flow , 28EC00 pressure sensor. Any idea how to solve the issue ?
Is it even legal to drive around on the roads with an EGR / DPF delete? As far as I know in Germany n47 cars without egr or dpf will fail emission inspection tests (every 2 years). No emission inspections in the UK?
Passes emissions absolutely fine!
Sorry mate new to n47 life. How hard is it too remove dpf? I’m ok with mechanics can do a little bit.
No worries, nobody will stay a long time with a N47
Will it pass an MoT with DPF and EGR delete?
Should do!
Hi George! I just disabled EGR by programming on my 2012 e91 320d so it physically is in place but the valve is programmed to stay closed. DPF will be let in place because in Finland they may start measuring counter pressures in MOT tests.
Hi George again! If u have time, could u answer me please: is it wise to remove swirl flaps on N47 after EGR programming?
How did you manage to disable the EGR valve - what software or tool did you use?
I went to a BMW specialist. 50€ and 30 mins and he disabled the EGR valve by coding something with computer. I think number 1 was changed to 0 that the valve is closed all the time.
@@damienpuljic1535
does removing Cats help with power a lot?
If i map the egr and dpf out can i still leave them on the car or do they need to come out once mapped out
Thanks in advance
Very very good advice. Keep it up George! N47 User.
Thanks, will do!
Wont it fail an MOT test with the EGR and DPF removed?
Do you have a link for the egr delete and your dpf delete? Please
The videos are on my channel, just search for them👍🏻
My DPF is regenerating every 300 km on my 520d 2008
Can you recommend who can change timing chain for 1k like you mentioned
Does engine n47 2011 diesel have a vonase just wonder and I have a rough idle problem with out any code showing o need advise please
Psoy propietario de un 325d e92 , cadena kit cambiada a los 27000 por distensión, y ahora con 200000 otra vez ruido!
One question, if you remove the EGR and DPF, will the car have black smoke from behind when you floor it
Not if mapped properly and the engine is healthy
What about mot's? I really want to remove my dpf just worried I can't get one
I’ve never had an issue on MOT
@@GeorgeAusters I'm doing it going to pick a dpf delete later
George, do you know much about the bearing failure on the N57?
I would say its largely down to lack of oil changes and or not letting the engine warm up before thrashing it
Yeap dvsa have a real issue with this mod.
If they stop you it not to much of an issue though.
You just have to refit all the bits you've removed before you allowed to take your car away.
Is it 15v too much from the alternator ??
Hello mate , if you have a service please tell me where you are located 😊
After "get rid of the EGR" job should we modify the software of the car in some way ?
By any chance do you know where the oil pressure sensor is located on the engine?
Yes, below the HPFP
@@GeorgeAusters thank you so much for that. Can you tell me how to access this. I have removed all bottoms covers and cant seem to see it anywhere.
Tell us how you get round the MOT...few have asked and that's probably what's stopping most people from doing it, I know you can gut the dpf and it's only a visual inspection but what about the egr?
My n57 shit the bed at 140,000km (90k miles). Always had yearly oil changes and never more than 15k km between changes mostly less. Just unlucky i guess. It had 60k miles when i bought it and i rarely did small journeys and was always easy on the engine until it warmed up.
without dpf will it pass mot? my car is 2009 model. I had egr deleted but it still on it .if I take dpf off the car .Will it still pass mot?
If the box is in place and engine is healthy then yes
I would like to have your opinion on a BMW 123d double turbo engine which is what i will be swapping after my seat Ibiza 6L 1.4 tdi 90hp
Same engine just 2 turbos
How do you remap the software after the deletes?
Take it to a tuner
Thank you for suggesting and encourage me to make my car road illegal! Great tips!
You're welcome!
Will stage 1 basic n57 remap and egr delete make my car not choose to drive on low rpms like 1-1.3k?
If not mapped correctly.. Could also be your torque converter if an auto
I have n47 I only recently baught it recently I've noticed on start up from cold it's got a slight rattle lasts about 3 to 5 seconds after this is pretty normal . Garage are saying it's normal what do you . Your videos are great and you seem to know these cars well thanks in advance
Great video and comprehensive advice.
I’ve just bought a bmw sadly not knowing it was the n47 engine 🤦🏻♂️ it’s the 3 series 318d 2009 143bhp however the car is currently on 154k chain got changed in 2020 at around 120k now I’m constantly worried about the chain snapping on me is the car worth keeping? Or If I change the oil every 7k how long would
It last 😬
Change oil every 5k miles and you’ll be fine
@@GeorgeAusters 🙏 👍🏼
Hi George, if the EGR is removed will that have an effect on the emissions test at the MOT cheers
I wouldn't worry about that. I have egr mapped out and it didn't fail.
Hi i got my oil changed yesterday. X1 Sdrive 20d n47
So required is 5.2 litres. I inserted 5.4Litres
Should i get the extra 200ml removed?
What does the dipstick say?
Can i dm you on Instagram the picture of the dipstick?
Where did you buy the kit and plug for the EGR Valeve remove
Watch the EGR delete video
I’ve got a whistle when I accelerate on my 320d Msport 2009! Doesn’t seem to be any loss in power. Could this be a faulty turbo or a loose pipe?
Check the turbo shaft for play
@@GeorgeAusters thanks
Hi
I have a f30 with n47 and just Added straight pipe and egr delete and after that it lost a lot of power any ideas what could be the issue?
I have owned the car since almost new and taken very good care it
Have you remapped it?
Yes remapped and no codes
@@axelhilmarsson2746 you got a bad map, pay for a good remap and if the turbo is good the car should push more than 220hp
I had my EGR valve the small metal pipe get a split and had black smoke in my car inside and gave my wife headache for a few weeks till I found the problem. Then bmw made me pay £900 to fit a new small radiator and pipe
BMW and all garages likes to steal money from us.
My rocker cover gasket is leaking. Is it ok to replace or should I change cover which is £400.
Garage said on N57 they prone to leak again and labour is same
Fine to replace gasket unless cover is cracked
George, great work here. Just acquired a 320d 2009 with 78k on the clock. The swirl flaps have immediately thrown a wobbly so trying to decide on whether to go down the delete route or not. Anything else you would recommend I tend to whilst I’m going to be digging around in the engine bay?
Thanks
Hey george I need a little help, i am having "rough idle "when i start in the morning please any suggestion to change any sensore please help me.
Glow Plugs or Water temp sensor . If the Water temp sensor is telling a wrong tempersture the engine inject like the motor is already warm so it starts bad and rough
I have a 2007 n47 car and I have electric power steering ... how come ?
Electric power steering was an option from factory 👍🏻
Part of BMW’s efficient dynamics improvement to increase mpg. Electric power steering means no extra auxiliary load on the engine when driving in a straight line.
Hello, what is your take on deleting the EGR ( by mapping it out + unplugging it) but leaving it in place?
That's exactly what I have done, so not sure whether it would bring any benefit by physically removing it?
That is fine the only small downside to only mapping it is that the carbon soot build up could potentially still escape in small amounts. I've personally gone down the route of egr mapped out but I will be blanking it off after Xmas.
@@cranitdans I might do the same as I have the Darkside Development EGR blanking kit already.
How often would you recommend cleaning intake ? How many miles? Im around 85k to early ?
I’d recommend it now
Just had my chain done on my f31 320d. Cost £2400. Where you getting it done for £1000? 😅
I done mine myself but many people will do it for around £1000
