  • I am going to test and compare the Audio-Technica 4053b against the Rode NT5 in an indoor talking head scenario, great for Interviews, Corporate Profiles or other indoor planned production shoots.

    For my ears, AT4053b was not only less echoey but much more natural sounding. It was smooth, easy to listen to and still, clearly intelligible. Thanks for demonstrating it.

    I much preferred the NT5, even in the small room. The AT4053b sounded way to bass-heavy. I do agree the NT5 didn't sound great either in the small room. Given that the AT4053b has a low-cut filter, though, I'm wondering if I would like it more with that filter engaged.

    With the exception of more room reverb, intelligibility wise, the Rode NT5 is the winner. It sounded more cleaner, clearer and more crisp. The Audio Technica AT 4053B also sounded good. It handled room reverb better, had better bass response, but with the sacrifice of more audible noise. Comparison heard through Sony MDR-7506 headphones. Ultimately, which mic is best depends on the style of mic, desired sound, or intended purpose of the recording ... whether music, dialogue or foley.

    I have a pair of the Rode NT5´s and i have tested them in a binaural arrangement and listened to the recording on Sennheiser HD600 and Audio Technica M50X And the result was well above what i had hoped. I did add a bit of tape saturation and it felt like i wasn't wearing headphones at all. I mainly use these for sound-design purposes and they're great.

    Interesting video.
    I did some research though, and the Audio-Technica 4053b is a hypercardioid mic, whereas the NT5 is a cardioid mic. They have a slightly different pickup pattern, which might account for the difference.
    I do hear a big difference between those mics, but the issue might not be sound quality but use case. The AT has much more base, and the NT5 seems to sound like it's topping out more often. Both are passable but definitely the AT is crushing the NT5 in this use case. The small room definitely affected both mics, definitely dropping the audio quality in general. I think I agree the AT sounds slightly better as its capturing something like base, or some kind of throaty noise that's a lot more natural.
    The hypercardoid has a bit closer in radial pattern to the front, and then an additional one towards the back, whereas the cardioid pattern is totally frontal but slightly larger. This might explain the differences in use cases especially given the monitors nearby and the heavy potential for sound bouncing around the room. The hypercardioid might absorb that sound better because it's almost more of a shotgun mic, and half its pattern is aimed behind the mic where sound reflecting off the walls wouldn't be as noticeable.
    It's actually a really nice lesson in how these mic's handle the rooms and what the difference will be.
    Correct me if I'm wrong, because maybe they have AT4053b's in different pickup patterns, or NT5's. I couldn't find any different naming conventions that'd alter them to be the same, but mic's are always a little inexplicable.

    Just sharing my experience. I have the hyper cardioid version of the AT4053b(the 4051b) and I also have the Rode NT5. To me there's no comparison... the rode tends to sound kind of thin and doesn't have as much reach. The AT seems to dig deeper in collecting sound in the sweet spot. I use it on nearly all my videos. The Rode will make more work in the EQ post work.

    Nice video! I would go for the AT. In my opinion, the Audio Technica has a more neutral sound and isolates the voice really well.

  • @mg1mg
    @mg1mg 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I'm a mixing engineer and think that what you're liking about the AT is the bass it adds to your voice. To my ears, after hearing the NT5, it sounded muddy. If film makers want the low end without mucking around with EQ during post production, I'd understand choosing the AT, but I'd go for the NT5 for the clarity it brings and just introduce a boost to the low frequencies to give the voice a rounded presence.

    • @marctrainor5595
      @marctrainor5595 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with Maynard, but I'm wondering if you could pull out or add enough bottom end to make it as full as the AT. I really don't know, but if Maynard's right it could save your butt having the crispier NT5. Marc

    • @jdmccjr
      @jdmccjr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The AT has a decent output so it can be used a little further way from your subject and that would also lessen some of the proximity low end. In video that extra bit of distance and still be able to get very good subject isolation is crucial.

    Great video Carlos! I would have to say that the AT4053b definitely sounds better for this type of work. Being a hypercardioid, it was designed more for dialogue, where as you said, the NT5 was designed more for instruments. One mic that I have used in the past that you might want to try that is really low priced, and sounds great indoors and outdoors is the Audio Technica AT875R. It's a very versatile short shotgun mic for dialogue.

    I made a comment to this video a few years ago, but I've deleted it, because I no longer agree with what I said. I own a matched pair of NT5, but no AT4053b. So I have no particular wish to like the 4053 better, as I don't want to be tempted to buy yet another plus $500 microphone. But now I do like it better, at least recorded in that particular small room, at least from that angle, and at least listening on my current speakers. I never before liked the 4053 very much, but in this case I do.
    I wonder if it would make any difference with a different placement or even angle of the microphone relative to the walls. But as it is, the NT5 doesn't sound ideal.
    Well, I still have my Sennheiser ME 64.

    Indoors in a small room with lots of reflective surfaces, the Rode NT5 is awful. The echoes were evident.
    The Audio Technica 4053b was the clear winner with clear, intelligible warm sound, with no echoes.

    Great video topic, I haven't seen may people cover this challenge. My NTG3 is great in general but picks up too many reflections indoors I find. I have always been looking for a good alternative to a lav and shotgun mic for indoor work.

    Very professional well done video. I love the nice moving shots, etc. I shoot video myself so it stands out for me. I love the sound of the AT4053B. To me it sounds very robust but still clear, not muddy. I'm looking at some NT5's for possible live use on acoustic instruments, or maybe overheads for drums, whatever, but it seems to be a little thinner sounding than a lot of other mikes, although, to me, has good presence and clarity, just maybe lacking in some fullness or bottom end. Great job. Keep it up. Marc

    What about the Rode nt55? Rode themselves say that's for broadcast etc. have you tried that compared to the Rode Nt5? The NT5 sounds to thin to my taste. I am torn between the NTG3 and the Rode NT55 unless it sounds like a NT5. The AT sounded good. It's funny because I am just hearing about shotguns not being used indoors

      Late to the party here but you can't add what's not there to begin with. All you'd be doing would be increasing the noise floor if you attempt to boost frequency that wasn't captured on arrival.
