Mic Shootout: Audio-Technica AT4053b vs. Rode NT3

  • This is my first informal test of the AT4053b Hypercardioid mic I just bought. In this video I am switching between the AT453b and the Rode NT3. Both mics were placed in pretty much the same place above my head.
    Make you own conclusions. To me the AT4053b is darker than the NT3. At first listen the NT3 sounds more open and clear, but the AT4053b is more rich and full. I think the fact that my room is treated made the AT4053b sound a bit darker in this test than it has proven to sound in the field.

      Yes the AT4053b is the clear winner. I still use it fore indoor dialog to this day!

    AT4053b seems to have more bass to it... NT3 definitely has more treble to it! Great video!

    I agree. It's the AT4053b is the only mic I use for indoor dialog.

    Thanks for the demonstration, it was an excellent side by side. Usually I'm left wanting to listen to more examples but this was done well enough that I don't feel that way. Unusual for me! I actually prefer the rode in every way aside from the weight.

    If you found my RE-50 video, you can see I'm using the Sennheiser Plug-on transmitter. They work perfectly together, but you may need to adjust the levels from what you had on the lav. I don't know about the MD42. I've never heard it mentioned. All I know is the RE-50 N/D is an industry standard. You may want to spend the few more bucks for the N/D version which is a bit more sensitive.

    I agree as well. It sounds to me like the 4053b has a bit less clarity but more low end response. I actually found its sound a bit muffled for vocals, while the NT3 seemed a little too bright, but I preferred the sound of the NT3 for his vocal samples due to the clarity. On guitar, I DEFINITELY liked the 4053b better though. The warmth let you feel the awesome richness of the acoustic guitar.

    Very nice and interessting comparison, many THX for the work you have done. I think that a mic with more sonority as the AT is, not only gives more naturally ambience but also the possibilety to overwork the substanc catched by a later mastering .

    This shootout is for the purpose of recording dialog for video, rather than for singing/music. In those cases the mics would be above the head.

    The ElectroVoice RE 50 is pretty nice. I did a video here if you search that model, but I don't think it dies it justice. It sounds thin compared to the vocal mic I used as a comparison, but in use it's perfect, and used by many "man on the street" interviewers.

    The AT is so much warmer and more pleasant. The NT3 has a tinny and aggressive high frequency response. I don't like that.

    Hi Chad, I've watched a number of your mic videos and you seem to know what your talking about, so I was wondering if you could give me some advice? I'm looking for a mic to record dialogue in a large room with echo, I've already tried shotgun and lav mics, but they still have alot of echo 😔 I'm not able to change the room in any way, so is there a more suitable mic for these situations? thanks. Matt

    • @ChadWork1
      @ChadWork1  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Matt, in my experience a lav placed center chest is your best bet, as your body blocks half of the room, and the mic is close to the mouth. Don't worry about hearing the reverb of the room, as that's the context of the space. As long as you can hear the voice clearly it will be fine. You may do a little better with an experienced boom op and a tight framing of the shot. The shotgun mic pointing down to the mouth will reduce some reflections, but ultimately it is what it is, an echoey space.

    Do you recommend buying any accessories for this mic. I noticed that you can buy some sort of tip extender thing and also other things. I just want to know if it comes with a XLR hook up and it is ready to place on a Manfrotto Boom. I take it this is the best Mic to get and invest in

    The Audio-Technica AT4053b kills the RODE NT3 when doing interior voice recordings where sound reflections are a problem. That is its strength.

    • @ChadWork1

    The NT3's brighter sound seems to be more suitable when just speaking, but seems a little too harsh when using it for guitar and singing. The AT4053b sounds a little more bass-driven and can handle instruments better. But, a little to muddy for just speaking. Could be just a matter of adjusting the EQ level differently for each mic.

    @ChadWork1 that is awesome quality. I want to record audio for shorts, but I feel the Zoom H4n captures too much "static" or ambient noise. I want it to be as portable as possible but, what do you think about it? what should I use? I want it to sound like your audio, clean and crisp. I heard about the Juicedlink but I was thinking about an external sound source so I can also capture ambiend sound like birds or people if needed.

    The 4053b appears to show more proximity effect being a hypercardioid vs the NT3 cardioid. Gives it more of a booming tone.

      lakmir0 The NT3 is Cardioid Studio Condenser. What you're seeing is the seller 'Austin Bazaar' is titling Rode's product inaccurately to sell more units. Amazon's layout makes is appear to be Rode selling direct but it's not; Amazon sales trick; look closer on the page and you've see Rode is highlighted as they are the manufacturer. Anyway...

    • @savedfaves
      @savedfaves 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      lakmir0 It's absolutely not a Hypercardioid. To be clear. Guitar Centre also has the product listed incorrectly. No need to sue, just get your money back, if indeed you did want a Hypercardioid. BandH and Rode's website's have it listed correctly as a cardioid.

  • @OzKidzFun

    And if I already have Rode NTG-3 mic, will I notice much improvement or difference with hypercardioid mic for indoor recording, from your personal experience how much difference or improvement do you get if at all? I'm just trying to think if hypercardioid is worth the investment in addition to NTG-3 and what improvement am i going to get.

    What microphone is you preference? And Why?....

    • @ChadWork1
      @ChadWork1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The AT4053B is the mic to get. It's designed for boom pole audio indoors, and has a superior sound. The Rode is OK but too bright, and big, and not the right polar pattern. The AT4053B is still in my sound bag and gets used a lot. It's the best mid-level hypercardioid mic for indoor dialog.

    • @ChadWork1
      @ChadWork1  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You may want to listen to the AT4053b in the context of a real shoot. It's not overly sibilant like the NT3. Brighter sometimes reads ad "better" when it's actually more shrill when you work with it over time. You can't bring back the body in post if it's not captured from the start. vimeo.com/21091547

    Is the nt3 a good mic for indoor scenes for short films?

    • @ChadWork1
      @ChadWork1  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would not choose that mic. The polar pattern is not optimal. It's cardioid, when the preferred capsule is hypercardioid like the AT4053b. It's also pretty heavy for a boom mic. But it would be a better choice for infer dialog than a shotgun.

    • @joecoz26
      @joecoz26 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chad Johnson On amazon it says its a hypercardioid, I am starting to get confused. Here is the amazon link www.amazon.com/Rode-Microphones-Hypercardioid-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B0002PSCQW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1413417978&sr=8-2&keywords=hypercardioid

    • @ChadWork1
      @ChadWork1  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joe Zoc Amazon is wrong. Trust me. I've talked directly to Rode about this, and the NT3 is definitely a cardioid. That just means you will pick up more around the mic than a hyper will. You want it as directional as possible to cut down room noise. If it's all you can afford, it's not a bad mic at all. It's just not what any pros would choose as a first choice.

    • @joecoz26
      @joecoz26 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chad Johnson Thanks for your help, in your opinion what do you think would be a good microphone for indoor dialogue shots for 1000 dollars or less?

    • @ChadWork1
      @ChadWork1  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe Zoc I bet you colds find a uses AT4053b for that price! Trust me again, if you get the right mic it will last you your whole career, so oven if you have to pay an extra 200.00, you will be happy and save money by not replacing something else later. There is some cheaper options like an Octavia with a hyper capsule, but man it's nothing compared to the quality of the AT4053b, which is still just a middle of the road mic. Anyway, when it comes to mice, put a little extra in one time and you'll never have to think about it again. Look for used ones if you must. Cheers.
