    I saw this video for the first time just now. Really opened my eyes. Do you do any work with song thrush and mistle thrush? I am worried about their survival..

      Hi,
      Not currently as I don’t feel I’ve got the appropriate set up for these larger softbill species currently. I’ve got several friends who do though, there’s 2 or 3 videos on my channel looking at the captive breeding of those species (thrushes) if you’re interested

    Great video. Its very interesting to see your siskin mules.
    Can these mules get as tame and steady around people as a normal canary can?
    I am considering getting a pet singing bird, and I can't decided on a canary or a goldfinch mule or just a goldfinch.
    I know canaries like to live alone as they are not social outside the breeding season. Is this the same with goldfinches, or could I keep a pair together all year round?

    • @OCAVIARY
      @OCAVIARY  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi,
      Yes they can however it would take a lot of time and patience to get them to a ‘finger tame’ point. The better choice may be hand rearing a bird like this if it’s for a pet as opposed to a breeder etc.
      A canary or mule may be better than goldfinch just because they are more calm than goldfinches, although with work they can become very docile

      @@OCAVIARY thanks, that's really helped.
      I think I will rule out a pure goldfinch.
      I think I would like a goldfinch mule, as I have listened to their song on other videos and they sing beautifully.
      I actually like the song to be a mix of the goldfinch and canary as its more varied.

    Nice video mate, I have the same problem with the Red Cardinal chick seem to stop developing after 3/4ish days…If you find a cause please let me know maybe it could be the same thing

    • @OCAVIARY
      @OCAVIARY  ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you checked for blackspot?
      That’s a common problem in finches and birds alike caused by Megabacteria in the gut causing them to die. Something like Grog from Mercasystems is a good cure for this!

    Ollie you sound as excited as me when I got my goldfinch x chaffinch eggs the other day I couldn't belive it and since then my other pair of goldfinch x chaffinches has layer aswell so got 3 eggs off the 1 hen and my other hen layer her 2nd this morning I dont know how true it is but spoke to a few people and they said its only ever been done once and that was in 1994 perhaps you could shed so.e light on this thanks

      Fantastic news👏🏼
      Believe it or not but 1994 was 8 years before I was born!🤣 I know the hybrid has been done before however is a very rare occurrence. Please keep us updated!

    Nice to see i have breed bramblings years ago allways one cock on 3 hens and works good they allways start in thate time about juni allways one round but bigg nest about 5 till 7 eggs when you need them for show you most feed them 2 a 3 times self in your hand and lett them moult in bigg avairy off breeding box lots off badwater and a littel chloor in it that make the feathers softer

      Fantastic Thankyou for the tips John!
      I’ve currently got the hen feeding out my hand, hopefully that will benefit with her being more comfortable around me for when I have to check eggs, chicks etc

    Hey, what is best for the budgerigar to stand on? Is it wood or plastic? 🙏🥰

    • @OCAVIARY
      @OCAVIARY  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi,
      Wood is always better as it’s natural and the birds can get a better grip, just make sure it’s not too rough so it’s not uncomfortable on their feet. And ideally have different thickness perches to exercise their feet

    Where is the success you are talking about? I have yet to see a full clutch of chicks in any nest. What experience do you have to give you the confidence to patronise true breeders. Just an example of my success built on 40 plus years.....a single pair redpols produced 16 young off three nests this year, and 2 pairs bullfinches produced 16 young. Please continue to tell me how to breed natives!!!!
