  • I decided to build a new 2x72 belt grinder with variable speed control using treadmill motor. Most of the material for this build was recycled form junk. The motor has more than enough speed and torque to do the job. With the minimum cost this grinder is not as good as expensive one but it is definitely usable and worth the time I spent to build it.

    Very nice young fellow. Now all you need is a flat plate approximately 5”-6”’s long, centered just behind the belt at front of machine. Well done. Also, WD 40 is great for loosening stuck bolts but will rust the hell out of bare metal parts like your drill press and gun surfaces. I would use a grinding/honing oil for drilling. Take care.

      WD-40 was designed to protect missile parts in long term storage. So to say it rusts metals is idiotic. I in fact use WD-40 to protect all of my tools in my shop. From antique hand planes to metalworking machinery. I buy WD-40 by the gallon can. I use WD-40 as an aluminum cutting lube too. Because WD-40 works great for that. For cutting steel I use Rapid Tap or a synthetic water emulsion.

      WD stands for water displacement 40 means Mr. Vern likes his 40th formula best. He wanted to displace water which ended up being a product good for everything

    Why are you striking off on the angle iron? If the flux is longer than the rod after welding a tack push the rod into a piece of wood just after welding when rod it red hot. This will break the flux and leave it just the right length to start your next tack or weld.

    this is neat! ive seen a lot of plans and videos for this build. its a fair question to ask why these are $2000 plus when you can build one that's very nice quality for $200 if you have the tools and patience. thanks for the video, very neat. id like to know if you are still using it and how its holding up.

      with 2000$ you would have a very solid machine and everything works out of the box and trouble free. I've read many comment on internet that treadmill motor and skate wheels is not design for this type of job but the grinder still serves me well. I'm planning to use the same type of motor for my drill press and also disk sander in future.

      - VFD and 3 phase motor will cost around $500 new. Alternative for that DC motor and PWM controller can be used. As you can see in the Video my controller works well I have no complain about it.
      - Do you know how much money they spend for labor to build this type of machine.?
      - I don't say my $50 grinder is as good as $2000 one but it is good enough for me. And really I enjoy building my own thing so why I have to spent more?

    Exactly what skateboard wheels did you use?? What width in millimeters and inches and what brand? I seem to find thousands of them and do not know the differences! Is ABEC 9 better than ABEC 7, etc.?
    Thanks in advance! I have 3 treadmill motors that all work well, a 10 K potentiometer and all the wiring and an M-60 control board! I have all the framework and the drive wheels, too! Other than belts and a platen, what else do I need to complete this puppy?

    Mình hỏi tí, nếu mình làm motor trực tiếp như bạn thì liệu máy chạy có bị rung hơn nhiều so với chạy gián tiếp qua dây curoa không? Mình đang làm máy mà phân vân cái này quá, nếu làm kiểu gián tiếp thì phải mua dây curoa, trục, vòng bi, gối đỡ, khoan thêm mấy lỗ to nữa.

    • @cuongchu8562
      @cuongchu8562  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Làm motor trực tiếp đỡ rung và đỡ ồn hơn dùng pulley với belt nhiều nhưng mà bạn phải tính đển chuyện làm sao để điều chỉnh tốc độ motor nhanh hay chậm. Dùng pulley với kích cỡ khác nhau để điều chỉnh tốc độ. Nếu gắn motor trức tiếp bạn phải mua motor 3 pha + biến tần. Hoặc động cớ 1 chiều + nguồn + bộ điều chỉnh xung giống mình ở trên.

    • @thoviet7721
      @thoviet7721 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cuong Chu Mình quan trọng tốc độ mài nên muốn đẩy vòng tua từ 2900v/p lên gấp đôi nhờ hệ thống dây curoa. Nếu dùng lai trực tiếp thì máy dễ làm hơn nhưng tốc độ giới hạn. Mình nghĩ vậy đúng ko?

    • @cuongchu8562
      @cuongchu8562  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Đúng mà không đúng. Tại vì tốc độ của belt được tính theo tốc độ của drive wheel x chu vi của drive wheel. Vậy nếu bạn làm drive wheel bự hơn thì tốc độ belt cũng nhanh hơn. Cái thứ 2 là nếu dùng biến tần nếu bạn chay 120Hz thì tốc độ của motor cũng nhanh gấp đôi. Nếu điều kiện kinh tế cho phép thì bạn xài biến tần và 3 pha motor sẽ cho hiệu quả cao nhất.

    • @thoviet7721
      @thoviet7721 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mình có sẵn motor 1 phase thôi bạn à, có người bảo mình cái băng nhám để mài ko quan trọng lắm mag quan trọng tốc độ quay thôi. Mình lăn tăn cái độ ăn thép lắm vì mình chỉ mài skd và INOX thôi, vậy dùng những loại nhám thường được ko hay buộc phải dùng nhám màu xanh da trời của HQ 45 nghìn hoặc nhám xanh lá cây Nhật 76 nghìn để mài ăn được những loại thép khó mài trên? Mình thấy chi phí vào nhám khá cao nên tính dùng nhám cuộn về cắt dán dùng tạm.

    • @cuongchu8562
      @cuongchu8562  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      băng nhám quan trọng lắm bạn. skd với inox thì nên xài nhám ceramic. Nhám thường không trụ được lâu đâu

    I built a similar one I just can't get the belt to run straight I always want to go off to one side or all the way off if you could help me that be appreciated

    • @cuongchu8562
      @cuongchu8562  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nathan Johnson: I Had similar problem with my very first build. Those thing may cause your problem
      - mark center all of the wheels and make sure they are in same plane and all wheel shafts have to square with this plane. In most case the belt went off because the wheel shaft is not square with the frame.
      - Check if wheels are true (Same diameter in both side)
      - Drive wheel and tracking wheel have to be crown in the middle.
      It's easier if you can post video to see what wrong
      cheers

    • @blltwzrd
      @blltwzrd 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +winnerdog Looks like he used the variable speed controller from a treadmill on 8:32, since the motor also came from this.

    • @cuongchu8562
      @cuongchu8562  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the motor and controller all came from treadmill.

    • @cuongchu8562
      @cuongchu8562  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +winnerdog You can use arduino and FET to control DC motor speed but I'm sure you can buy a used treadmill under $100 or even free. I use the arduino just to drive the treadmill controller and get rid of the treadmill dashboard.

    • @cuongchu8562

      +Samy Jeghers all most no cost. I spent only $6 dollars for the spring and $5 for the skate board to get wheels.

    • @cuongchu8562
      @cuongchu8562  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say less than $50 if I had to buy everything. Anyway the motor is free i got it from a broken treadmill and make my own controller.

    • @samyjeghers4763
      @samyjeghers4763 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Cuong Chu Ok, ok it's great! Does it last long? I mean why are belt grinder that expensive if you can make one for $50 or more with a motor?

    • @cuongchu8562
      @cuongchu8562  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I spent more than 8 hours for the build and have to spent another couple hours to built the tool rest , calibrate and true up the skate wheels later. So if time is not your money then go and build one. I build another belt grinder with same material 6 months ago and it runs fine until now. I don't even have to change the wheels. You can see my other video to see how it performs. The draw back of the skate wheels that they are not true enough so the belt wobble a bit but I can be fixed by using a harder wheels and true up the wheels. I will make a video about that later.

    Belt rotates the wrong direction, change the 2 leads off the motor controller and change the direction of the belt. this way you can use a steady rest while grinding, other than that great build.
