Belt Grinder Build From Scrap Workout Bench And Treadmill Motor

  • This video is my 2x72 belt grinder build from an old workout bench, scrap, and a treadmill motor and parts. I tried to make this as portable and adjustable as I could. Also the treadmill motor and motor control board make it variable speed without changing a belt on pulleys. How to build a 2"x 72" belt grinder.

    using the treadmill motor was ingenious for a solid low budget build, one can find treadmills almost nothing when people gives up on the work-out-at-home intentions.
    Excellent build, best one I've seen on youtube.

    What one can do with good power tools! Great build too! Regarding belt wobble, I noticed long ago that leaving my belts on the grinder contributes greatly to this "wobble". The tracking wheel puts a slight kink into the belt if left on the grinder. I take mine off at the end of the day and can honestly say this eliminated the problem.

    Nice to see a grinder built without using a lathe at some point. Obviously if someone had access to one use it, but I don't and most of the ones I see built get a few fancy parts turned. The band saws are super handy but a guy with who is careful with a grinder and drill could do all of this.

    Looks good. I have built a grinder once as well. After some research I found the belts are supposed to run around 3600 ft per min. So to slow down my 7000 rpm treadmill motor and keep the power up I installed a jack shaft the motor turns and reduces the speed in half and then turned a 4 inch drive wheel from wood to run the belt. it works great tons of power you can't slow it down while grinding. I think my motor was 2.5 hp. Other than the belt speed it looks like you have a real solid design. I only commented because you stated it was a little fast.

    I like this grinder. So many ways to apply in woodworking. I will attempt to do the backbone of mine out of wood instead of aluminum. I'll use wood due to the fact that I do not have all the cool tools you have in making one, and wood should be efficient since I will be working with wood. Your welding skills are pretty solid, and again... this is the best belt sander I've seen.
    Thank you for sharing, and if I get around to doing mine... I'll send you pictures.

    Very nice work, especially loved how you routed the curved slot. Other men would need $5000 in machinery for that.
    As for your belt wobbling issues, it could be because you crowned all the pulleys. This can create instabilities as oscillations build up. It's a complex mathematical/control loop problem I don't fully understand, but from practice it is often best to have only one crowned pulley, usually the driving one. I think Matthias Wandel did some work on this if I am not mistaken.

    • @1966cambo
      @1966cambo ปีที่แล้ว

      I am pretty sure you are correct! I noticed the consistent movement in the belt and that was my first thought,the wheels.
      I love this build by the way, not everyone out there that could use a belt grinder can afford even the parts and materials to build one but by going this route it makes it attainable for most everyone (including me 😀)
      So thanks for sharing this !!!!

    Completely enjoyed the video. Your east coast cockiness came blasting through in your statement that "it works great cause I built it". Hilarious. One note on future builds: resist the temptation to use bolt threads as roller spindles. You'll find that the wear factor, especially at higher rpm speeds that you find on belt sanders, will cause fast quick uneven wear and a quick end to your "perfect" belt tracking. Also, kudos on crowning your UHMW or Delrin rollers (not sure what they're made of). Great job.

    Great job. I built one out of wood last year and it works fine for what I need but I want to build one out of metal. I enjoyed watching, it was very informative. When you started cutting a hole with your router, I could not imagine what you were doing and then you started moving in a half circle, I would not have thought of doing it that way, very smart . Take care.

    Very nice. Just picked up treadmill for $50 off craigslist with 5075 RPM 1.75HP motor. Stripped it all down yesterday. I was contemplating how to drive the belt. Looks like you just welded tubing to the flywheel. I might do that, or I may use the belt drive from the treadmill. That will slow it down to a more reasonable RPM. Originally I thought I would use a 3ph motor and VFD, but that gets pretty expensive. The one concern I have with the treadmill motor is keeping the dust out. I'll likely make an enclosure for it. I will take your advice and make the wheels wider than the belt. I guess 2.25 ~ 2.5 should do it. 2.5 would let me run wider belts as well, if needed. I am also a new subscriber because of this video! Andy

  • @lawrenceogden8682
    @lawrenceogden8682 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    great video great machine, you say the motor will run at 6700 rpm it looks like you have a 80 mm drive wheel this will give you about 28 meters per second belt speed, pretty good but most manufacturers suggest up to 32 meters per second for steels this would require a larger contact wheel, easy to do, your first test on the machine the belt was running slower than in the second part of the test ,this time it was a lot faster, this does generate heat and a bucket of water is handy, or you can use damp running with a water mist, to cool the part , keep up the good work

    May I suggest a container of water on the floor under the work rest?
    It cuts down on sweeping and catches most of the sparks. A lot less of a fire hazard.

    Nice work.
    The belt tracking issue can be controlled by making the two front wheel barrel shaped.

      markspc1 When rollers are shaped like that they are called crown wheels because they have a ‘crown’ (or ‘high spot’) in the middle. And he did do that, on his belt grinder, somewhere around the 18:00 or 19:00 minute mark in this video (I’m at 21:00 and it happened a few minutes ago)
