- Our goal was to attempt the impossible, hook and land a giant goliath grouper on fly fishing tackle. To my knowledge, no angler has ever accomplished this before. Goliath groupers are one of the toughest and strongest fish in the ocean. We started the day off fishing for false albacore (bonito) to use for bait for the goliath groupers. After catching half a dozen albies, we headed offshore to begin our quest for a goliath grouper on fly fishing tackle.

Hey guys, I know John seems rude, but he is my friend and one of the best fly fisherman I know. We are very tough on each other, but it's all fun. 👍
BlacktipH it's not that he seems rude it's that he seems like an arrogant jerk to some people but to me he seems like a fishermen who catches fish but gets mad and cusses alot

John is a real fisherman and understands everything very well. He speaks his mind and that is important when fishing in a boat because lack of communication can be very bad and in some cases dangerous
Josh is tough on his fishing partners but does it so they can get the most out out their trips but John is just a flat out jerk for no reason

Sir, people don't watch this for an act. They watch it for fishing. They watch it for a sport. That you feel the need to "act" only cheapens the sport. Judging by other comments you've made on this video, I'm assuming you're the oh-so-wonderful ambassador of our sport (sarcasm). I've also noticed that you claim to be a world record holder. I would congratulate you, but you've let it get to your head. I only ask that you take heed to all of these comments, and do try and portray our sport in a less superior manner. Because at the end of the day, you double-haul the same way any of us do. Please respect yourself and our sport enough to show it.
Bob pop - I am not "that guy" I am the other guy, the erstwhile cameraman. I have known Josh for nearly a decade, have appeared in several videos and I was there. That said, this was the first time I have met John so don't know him past this experience. Is he a hard case? Does he have a "sailor's mouth"? Yup. Did he pour it on a bit thick? Yup. Has he forgotten more about chasing big fish with a fly than I can ever hope to know? Yup.
What showed somewhat in the video but more was left "on the cutting room floor" was John sharing decades' worth of experience with the camera. Rigging tips. Flytying. Fighting strategies. The storied history of that rod which he and the prior owner had used to land many dozens of trophy billfish and tuna. Was he abrasive? Sure, even by his own admission. Will I take him up on the invitation to stalk snook from the beach with a 9wt? Absolutely! Knowledge like that is a blessing to "our sport" and should be shared.
So you assumed wrongly and are basing judgements off of Josh's edited version of the day. It was one of the funniest days I have spent on a boat in years. That many of the little kid viewers don't understand a salty personality and adult humor is sad and a sign of their limited exposure to a wide range of adults. That older viewers, particularly fly anglers, are complaining is something else.

I never mentioned anything about you not being able to catch one. Just that you seriously thought that you could place the fly in the groupers mouth as he inhales the bonito.
@fly angler Someone should make that fly and a rod and reel to match, or just throw it on casting gear. You'd need 600 lb test flyline too, but I think it's possible. Just too many hoops to jump through at the moment.

When I was a kid, I wacky rigged lizard tails, fished with trout eyes, and chuck n ducked with 1 oz in splitshot above my fly, yet still caught fish. Ideas and sports are constantly evolving. You weren't born knowing everything and you won't die knowing everything. Neither will a grouper.
