Hi Rob, Mike here from Germany. Another awesome video, thanks. This concept is strangely counter-intuitive for us golfers however none of us have yet to meet a dart player who looks anywhere but at the target when throwing! This simply works and I’ve been enjoying watching my putts all get near if not in the hole of late. It’s almost ridiculous! BTW I also want to thank you for your s&t work, it’s not only improved my own but recently my wife’s game immensely and with that my marriage! All the best to you and your team! Take care Rob!
I tried Heads Up putting for the first time last week! I was on a course I had never played before, my results were simply fantastic! I shot 3 over par and sank what seemed like a mile of putts! My distance control was the best it's ever been. I put in several hours of practice on the putting green before actually hitting the course, IT PAID OFF! You owe it to yourself to give it a try, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised!
I have been using this "heads up" putting style for the past few weeks. My distance control on long putts has definitely improved! That's probably the best benefit for me. On shorter putts from about 6 feet in, I don't feel as comfortable with it yet. I've always been terrible at short putts, so this does help take some of the focus off the stroke (which is good). I'll have to keep working on it to know if this change is permanent. Thank you for a great instructional video!
I found this so easy it takes away tge fear and anxiety I have over shorter putts. It worked so well I started using it for lag putting. It really works for both. The rehearsal stroke is important so don’t skip this step. Bob rosella speaks of this as well in his book putting out of your mind. Great video well explained.
Practiced this style of putting for about an hour the day before and then I played my first round yesterday… I’m hooked on it! Don’t tell anyone about it… just do it and watch their expressions as you start making putts and they start to realize you aren’t looking at the ball… makes it even more fun
This is undoubtedly the best move for the average golfer, especially those who aren't going to spend endless hours of practice. Finding a spot target for break and speed and looking at that target instead of looking down has drastically improved my putting. The only time I look down is lagging from off the green where miss-hits are a danger and I hate doing it. You're a lot better than you think you are. Trust Dr. Cheney.
Oh No more great advice! self taught 5 hcp my top 3 putting drills in order of difficulty 1 hold follow through and connect braint to roll of ball 2 looking at the hole putting 3 right hand only putting and combo with 1 and 2
Ive been using this for a few seasons now. On straighter putts where aim was in or around the cup became routine. I struggled for a while on bigger breaking putts. I had a tendency for my focus to shift tpwards the hole. So i found when i picked my spot focus on it and then close my eyes and pull the trigger and that greatly improved my pyttting on big breakers. For me it gave my brain one picture and then execute to it. It really helped me stop the second guessing and the pull back to the cup.
That’s a great point and super interesting! Thanks for sharing 👍🏻 I’ve experimented with closed eyes putting as well and it certainly helps to free up the stroke. #flowy
This is a real deal way to putt! Like any other sport when your eye is on a target you engage your body and mind. However, I keep my eye on the ball at the peripheral edge while focusing on my target. This has been effective for me, especially on longer putts focusing on a break point. Great job Rob!
Hi, Rob. I use your Stack & Tilt plus swing hard stop fast to hit my best score 76, but my putting is lack of confidence, I pratice this putting methods and think someday I can make an even par 72. Many thanks again.
Results were mixed but I stuck with it for a full 18. Net result was 34 putts including four 3-putts on the front 9 [two were 3-putt bogeys]. Made some crucial 1-putt par saves on my way to a lack luster 88 as a 13-14 hdcper. I will stick with it as I see promise. My previous misses are the inside 5" that i am hoping to mininize. In my one practice session I ignored your instructions on the focused practice swings and just took a few swings to feel the club. While this worked on my backyard, flatish putting green, intentional practice strokes are indeed helpful when dealing with uphill/downhill and long putts. All in all, it was fun and ever so odd. ty.
I've been heads up putting fir past 2 years or so after listening to Sasho MacKenzie talking about it and never going back. Must better distance control and green reading, took me a few months to build in looking at a target other than the hole but when you get comfortable with it results are great. Lots of comments and laughs off the boys but soon stop chirping when they see the results
Spot on. Brain can do distance very well just by looking. I hate to see people stroking for a 25' putt and then stepping into hit a 10 footer. I strive to spend 90% of time looking at the target (putting & full). With putting I practice stroke looking at the target outside the hole (long, short, left, right) to get the feel, but look at the ball when hitting. I trust the alignment line is pointing on the start line. Reason: If I look say 2" right of the hole while hitting, then the brain is so good that the ball rolls over that spot. Arguably the real target for a right to left putt is beyond the hole and to left of it...whereas the start line is to the right. I would never look at the ground tossing a ball 60'...were my stroke sound enough to make center contact I would definitely lag looking at the hole. Argument to be made for side saddle. Currently trying 4 body locks from Axys golf to clean up the stroke and perhaps be able to make long strokes looking at the hole.
Always someone saying if this is so good why don't the Pro's do it!! LMAO! It's a different way! If it doesn't work for you don't do it! There are also other ways to hit a golf ball that Pro's don't use but it might work for you!! I use stack and tilt that Rob teaches, it works for me!! Some Pro's don't use it, many do. Thanks Rob I have heard of this, I will give it a try.
Hello Rob, big fan of your videos. I have been putting looking at the hole for on and off for sometime now. My distance is scary good but for some reason always revert back to looking at the ball and always coming up short. The main reason for going back to looking at the ball was lack of any guidance and didn't want to do anything against the norm, so thank you, finally some verification. I would highly recommend it and now committed to play a whole season next year looking at the hole.
Rob, please forgive me. I've been a subscriber going back to your GTA videos. I've watched countless hours of your videos and until this one, I've forgotten to hit the like button and or comment on the videos as I've watched them. Your YT videos have made me a way better player as I've embraced the S&T concept. It's only a matter of time until recreational players, realize that this concept will immensely improve their game. If you ever make it to San Diego, California, dinners on me! Cheers 🍻
Rob. I have used this method for years in my game it took me a couple putters to match the weight distance ratio in my brain to get it to the point I putt much better looking at the hole than the ball I use it 90% of the time I’d say and has drastically reduced my 3 putts. Also showed my son who uses your option of looking at hole lifts the putter and the brain takes over then he looks at ball and fires 😁 He has improved greatly in distance control Defo a must try if you struggle putting ⛳️👍
I also tried it for a while. It works well for me up to 10 metres. On further shots, I realised that turning my head a lot makes it difficult to make a longer swing when putting. For longer putts, I now concentrate on the target for a long time and then look at the ground just before the stroke. That way I am less restricted in the outstroke movement.
Yes, really good point! I also feel there’s a point when the distance of the putt is such that you need a longer backswing and it’s not possible to keep your eyes on the target. Taking that longer look at the target (as you do) is a good workaround. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@robcheneygolf1 It kind of works. It is hard to look at the hole and putt as all your normal reference points vanish. It did work on 3 foot putts and below. I’ll keep trying.
Hi rob have been no look putting with my long putter and found it great for getting the speed, but missed a few to many short puts when there was a slope .. I am going to practice looking a tee on these from now on . Even so the above video all makes total sense 👌🏌🏿👍
Hi Rob I have tried this in the past without really understanding what I was doing. I chose this method as I was struggling with distance control, mainly leaving the ball short, with this method i invariably went past the hole or had enough pace to hole the putt. Your explanation has inspired me to revisit this method - many thanks indeed 👍👍👍
Tried this today, it's ridiculous. Feels so wrong not looking at the ball, but my contact was consistent, no problem at all and the improvement was instant. My direction control was even better which I just don't understand. Better distance control makes sense, but having better aim from it? Wizardry.
I learned of this routine several years ago and it worked like magic. The main problem I encountered was good contact with the ball. I would sometimes hit the ground or miss hit the ball. Do you have any advice?
..., I've been doing that instinctively..., really, for me..., the longer the putt the more I focus on the target once I establish a target line..., never overly focusing on the ball and the blade/mallet contact.
I’ve been using this method for years now and I can’t tell you how many times my lag putting gets close to the hole. I very rarely three putt I could never go back to putting conventional style and you will never get the yips putting this way good luck
Tried it in the past and it worked well in practice but first round using it I was awful. Gave it up--too soon. Been practicing it a ton lately and what I notice is my start lines are better and distance control is much better especially on breaking putts where I can actually putt to the apex. Biggest issue is quality of contact is down but somehow it matters less with Heads Up. Also on putts up to about 4' I seem to like to see ball. We'll see how it holds up in play.
Happy that the video was able to get you to revisit "HUP". I think there are multiple benefits to be seen if you give it enough time. When it comes to putting it into play on the course, you can always you a "hybrid" until you get more comfortable. Good luck!
1st two rounds with extensive HUP practice and I had 36 & 34 putts Rob (shot 83 & 81). And it's ALL YOUR FAULT!!! 😂 J/K! I literally sink everything and my distance control is impeccable during practice. On course speed control is so bad and mostly from mishit putts--mishits seem to be really low on the face-almost thin. I'm guessing this just an issue trusting the line and the speed then making a bad stroke? Any thoughts?
Hi Rob I always hit the first 5/6 putts using heads up usually outside of 20’ just to get a feel for speed. Out of 5 putts I often drain 3. Very freaky results especially as this is just warming up. I am planning on sticking with this for the next several rounds once the season gets going. I need to stick to it for an entire round. I will let you know what my results are. Thank you for all of your content which is amazing. Lk from Canada
Rob I was wondering why this same methodology would apply equally to full swing, chipping, and pitching. I don't think it would work because there is too much motion in different parts of the body, right?
Yes, correct. This can even create an issue on particularly long putts where the swing (body turn/rotation) is longer and pulls the head/eyes away from the target. I have tried a sort of hybrid version for chipping with some success.
I tried this technique a few years ago with marginal success. My problem was an inconsistent center strike with the clubface and golf ball. Therefore I stopped using it. Is there a drill I can do to ensure center contact w/o looking at the ball and clubface relationship?
Rob, is there a distance where the putt is so long that is more important to “control” the putter? For example, is heads up still effective for a 50’ putt?
Yes, it can be. The challenge as the stroke get is longer is that the body rotation required for the stroke increases and pulls your head/eyes away from the target which can be awkward to manage. Otherwise, the benefits of HUP still exist.
That can certainly happen sometime and it can be unsettling when it does. But I f the benefits of Heads-Up putting are greater than the occasional lost shot from a mis hit putt, then it might be more persevering with.
Good question. Jordan Spieth DID do it for a long time on short putts. I think the benefit of this method is that it makes a golfer more target focused 🎯 which can help there ability to manage speed. Professional golfers are already target focused and considerably more skilled in controlling the distance they hit their putts.
So I gave this a go today thinking ‘this will never work’ and on first attempt sunk a curving 40 footer 😂 So I spent a fare bit of time on the practice green trying it and comparing to my normal stroke. I certainly liked the focus on target and that it took me away from overly worrying about the club face being square to target on impact. Was it better than my normal stroke? Inconclusive for me at the moment. Not sure I am brave enough to try it during a competitive round yet.
