- A short video showing how I replaced the alternator on my 2010 F150 with a 5.4 liter engine. Nothing special here it was a pretty simple job. Hope you find it helpful. I am getting back into making more videos so thought I would film it for some practice. Of course if you have any questions on the actual job please leave a comment and I will respond pretty quick.
Thanks for watching.

Great job! Thank you for all the detailed sizes of sockets as well!
You're welcome...glad I could help. I am actually doing the plug job I mentioned in August of 2020 this year....so two years later. Just did not drive the truck all that much after this video due to Covid and no longer driving to work. Will be replacing the plugs and ignition coil boots and plan to film that one as well.
@@Alan_Edwards oh yeah...I paid to get mine done, was traveling on vacation didn't have time. I had allot of hesitant acceleration and it fixed my problem!
You saved me allot of money thanks again buddy!
Glad you kicked Covid to the tailgate!

@@Alan_Edwards hey do you know if the 4.6 alternator is 150 amps as well?
Thanks for sharing. I have the 09 5.4…this video will come in handy. Question, do you mind sharing some of the symptoms you observed? Among the usual noises these engines make I am hearing a “humming” noise upon startup. I removed the belt and it didn’t appear to have any obvious wear signs. I gave the idle and tensioner pulleys a spin while still bolted to the engine however I unsure if they were actually bad. While turning the alternator pulley it did make a noise although somewhat faint. Had the alternator checked a few weeks ago and it checked out ok power wise. Would the same approach apply to the other pulleys? Would a failing water pump, power steering, condenser or fan make such a noise? One last thing, how many miles on your 2010 before changing out the belt and alternator. Lol apologies for all of the questions. Thanks again.
There was no real noticeable noise under the hood that I recall. The first time I knew there was a problem the truck just died on the road and I had to get a tow. I assumed it was the battery since it was old so I just replaced the battery. That lasted for some time, maybe a few weeks, so I thought that was it - then it happened again. I broke down near a house where a mechanic lived and he came out to help me out. After a jump he used a screw driver near the back of the alternator to test for magnetism. There was some but it was weak meaning the alternator was charging, but not very much. Which is why it would last a while. If you have a tester you can connect to the alternator terminals and it should be outputting like 14v. I have a bluetooth adapter plugged into my cigarette lighter that shows the battery output but I did not notice it at the time. I pay attention to it now and it's always around 14v.
It has been my experience that a humming noise it normally the alternator and it indicates the commutator is starting to fail. So you could get a reasonable output when testing, but at some point it will fail - and probably soon. Again a tester or even a cheap adapter of some kind that you can plug into the cigarette lighter to monitor the output might be a worthwhile expense. If it drops below 13v it indicates a problem. That is why I always prefer gauges over indicator lights too. As for pulley noises in general, I would be suspect of any pulleys like idler and tensioner pulleys that are making scrapping or squealing noises of any kind. They should roll smoothly with no real noise. Plus they are not expensive and easy to change out while you are doing the alternator.
At the time of the failure I had about 125K on the truck. Hope that helps you out.
@@Alan_Edwards Hey Alan, thanks so much for the feedback. I certainly plan to do exactly what you suggested and change out the components while doing alternator. I’ll keep you updated on my diy repair….will head to ford dealership/amazon Monday. Thanks for Pensacola FL
Are you sure yours is a 2010 F-150 and if so is it the one with the Triton 4.6 because mine's way harder to get to than yours. Edit sorry just read the rest of the description; same procedure just a little less room oddly enough.

I am not sure I understand the question. If you can clarify what you are asking I would be happy to answer.

Yeah it's too easy to pay and have it done. I do about 95% of my own work. YT makes it a lot easier than it was back in the day. Thanks for the comment.
I had the exact same thing happen to me
Thankfully it's easy enough to replace.
