      I said that the entire time I was watching the Code Geass movie. I had a dumb smile on my face the whole way through because no matter how stupid it was, it knew what everybody came for and just embraced that entirely.
      Don't get me wrong, though, I'm all for creators having new things to say with their works. Code Geass just knew what people wanted after so many years away and was willing to deliver on it.

      @@SylTag01 Fair that. I've heard a translation that indicates the tagline is "The end of the girl. The beginning of the girl." That sure doesn't bode well in terms of standing apart from Eva lol...
      A comment I had meant to add in my previous one. Anemone's not Anemone anymore, she's Fuuka, but Dewey's not really Dewey anymore either. I mean, if you introduced that character under any other name it wouldn't really make any difference, he's that disconnected from who Dewey is and what his role was. He has some connective tissue by knowing who Renton and Eureka are, but is it really enough to make him more than just a weird prophet with apparent telekinesis? He really disappoints me because a proper followup to the original series in which Anemone and Dominic somehow confront Dewey and what he did to them could have been a really fantastic thing, but instead they meet each other and it doesn't really matter at all.

    • @illustriousrocket4476
      @illustriousrocket4476 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Charlie-hv3dh The whole thing is that Eva and Eureka Seven are completely different beasts and don't necessarily have the same appeal.
      Eva ultimately is at its core Hideaki Anno using the familiar trappings of mecha anime to dramatize a deeply personal exploration of psychological issues. It's been that way all the way from 1995 until now. The ups and downs of his mental state can easily be traced across its history, and to me, that raw personal touch is part of its appeal. Eureka Seven, meanwhile, was originally far more whimsical, like a fairytale that just happened to be told through a mecha anime. Its unique identity, imo, came through its theme of love persevering over all hardship (even if it was to a naive or unrealistic level) plus its incorporation of music and 1960s counterculture into its setting. I haven't watched as many anime as most but Eureka Seven really stands out to me with that combination of factors.
      So in short, Eureka Seven and Eva aren't the same type of thing. The problem is that Tomoki Kyoda seems to be trying to reinvent Eureka Seven as something *like* Eva, but because he lacks the personal perspective Anno had to Eva, he doesn't get it right. Take the pervasively grim tone in Hi-Evolution 2. It doesn't feel right for the franchise, like it's disconnected from what Eureka Seven *is*. The attempts at religious symbolism like Dewey being Evil Jesus on a cross have the same problem, and Eva doesn't even actually have anything really deep or interesting to say with its own symbolism either. Hi-Evolution 2 just rarely feels like Eureka Seven outside of *maybe* the Ballet Mechanique sequence.
      I won't get into this too deeply here but another aspect where I feel Hi-Evolution is trying to be Eva and failing is its plot structure. Eva 3.33 contains a very sudden plot twist that many do not feel works at all that totally changes the status quo of the story. The big twists that hit in Hi-Evolution 2 are comparable, but because there's only one prior film leading into it and that film's events have virtually nothing to do with Hi-Evolution 2's, the twist of the "real world" setting instead feels like a second complete reboot of the timeline in as many films. That just leads to more problems, like, who is the protagonist? Renton was sidelined and turned into a living MacGuffin, Eureka was a fallen hero whose redemption will be difficult to sell, Anemone is a blank slate only introduced in the second film...

      Well, if it's any consolation, none of the Evangelion movies after EoE are really any good either, except for the second of the new ones, which is a decent coda to the series, and shows how Anno had psychologically grown. Most of the Eva movies are just unnecessary and/or lousy, and even End of Evangelion feels unnecessary to me, being such a purposeful downer and a "fuck you" to the fans. Who wants to watch that again? The TV series, after all this time, is still the real, definitive Evangelion, and it doesn't need anything to accompany it. And Eureka Seven is exactly the same. It was the best mecha TV show of the 2000s, without a doubt, and it still is what it is, regardless of whatever other crap they make in its name.

    Taking into retrospect of the original ending, the events in E7 Anemone and to an extent Pocketful of Rainbows as well as AO, it makes sense why any of these alternate endings are happening. Within the original series, it was clear to me that when Renton and Eureka went into the Zone for the first time, the hectic nature of experiencing the multiversal expanse of the scub coral seems to having been a nexus point to branching into a infinite multitude of endings. In my first viewing of E7, I found it odd that the ending we got was as open ended as it was. Then it clicked, the ending in the original series was not in the same world they promised returned to. The original ending made reference to the separation of the Scub Coral to another reality and that Renton did in fact join Eureka as a coralian as he said he would. I do believe that all the alternate universes are both their attempts to get back to the world they had saved. With the way E7 Hi Evolution 3 is panning out, I think it will finish into the original world they did save, closing the split in reality created in the place from their first encounter into the Zone.

    • @eddybaro7170
      @eddybaro7170 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is a good way of seeing it. Makes more sense then the movies themselves. More like a Recon then retrosepct.
      Issue I see is that this film states every content from the E7 franchise that came before this film were pocket realities made up by this 'Eureka'. I think the creators of this show wanted to have their cake and eat it too; what I mean is that the entire franchise of E7 is all canon but separated. To me, the original series' ending was perfect for the story- Eureka and Renton save the world, get married, & are seen alive and together in the end. Hi-Evo trilogy & everything outside the OG series seems like a hot mess.
      I think the only mecha franchise that has been financial and critically successful in making films that retell the original series story is, ironically, Eva. The rebuild series was not perfect but it managed to retell the story in a compelling and fun without losing the spirit and message of the OG series.

    How is a story that weaves together a story about alien life with existence warping capabilities, a story about an unitarian country harming the planet and rebels fighting against it, a story with very well made character archs for at LEAST 10 characters, and probably one of the best love story and coming of age story, just a "basic" story?

  • @historymanZP
    @historymanZP 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    I think it's fair to say that this movie killed any hope for this franchise to be relevant in the future. Putting aside the fact that mecha as a genre has all but died out, this whole trilogy broke the fandom irrevocably. What's sad is many fans like myself just want this to be put to bed. I know that movie 3 is due out this year (still no news other than dialogue recording is done), but I fear that movie 3 is just going to slam the final nail into E7's coffin.
    If you ever decide to revisit this topic again, one thing you didn't note that I think is worth mentioning is that there seems to be a deep division between Kyoda the director and Dai Sato the chief writer and Kenichi Yoshida, the animation director (all of whom, incidentally, are the only veterans of the original TV series working on the trilogy). There were some interviews done by Otaquest a couple years ago and you can really get a sense of how each of the three men look at E7. Kyoda clearly doesn't care about the property and is just trying to cash in on the name. Sato and Yoshida meanwhile clearly acknowledge that a lot of the things and conditions that made E7 possible in 2005 don't exist in the industry anymore in 2020, and it's pretty much impossible to make a show like that again. As you say, the fact Sato was NOT on any of the subsequent entries in the franchise says everything. And the worst part? Bones clearly doesn't care. They only want to milk this IP for everything it's worth, damn the fan reaction.
    If you're interested, I and some friends in the fandom tried to dissect what the hell went wrong in Hi-Evo in a little podcast/roundtable thing back in 2019: soundcloud.com/user-592594564/a-eulogy-to-eureka-seven
    Also links to the Otaquest interviews: www.otaquest.com/tomoki-kyoda-interview/ www.otaquest.com/dai-sato-eureka-seven-interview/ www.otaquest.com/dai-sato-eureka-seven-interview/

      @@SylTag01 It's cool, I figured it's just something you should be aware of and maybe talk about if you ever revisit this, since HE3 will be coming out. I hope you enjoy the audio roundtable! Just be warned that it's rather long (almost 3 hours) since my friends and I go very in-depth into what went wrong, along with some other meta problems surrounding the franchise, including the fan reactions to it. I may revisit it again with my friends when the third movie comes out, so if you want in, you're more than welcome. :)
      Frankly, the more I think about it, the more I realize that reviving E7 was just a fool's errand. It wasn't a property that had any potential to build a large following like Code Geass or Gurren Lagann. The decline of mecha as a genre, the divided state of an already small fanbase, the frustrations fans had with AO and PFOR, production delays, and even the deaths of some characters' voice actors (namely Keiji Fujiwara (Holland) and Kouji Tsuitani (Dewey)) just made a perfect storm for this to fail. It's really sad, because it's not like there wasn't potential to be had from making this a franchise. There was a lot to explore in the universe and expand the mythos, but for whatever reason, HE decided to just chuck that prime opportunity out the window. The whole thing...just makes me really sad.

    Bones needs to just hang it up on this series. The manga was also shit. Enough is enough already. The best iteration of this series will always be the 2005 Eureka 7 anime. Bones is just drudging up the skeletons of dead franchises, to kick the can further down the road. It sucks that this film was trash, because it had so much potential to explore with Anemone, and explaining some of the things left unanswered in the original show. They could have shown how Dewey rose to power. Anemone's life before she became a test subject, and her transition to become "Anemone." Anemone was one of the best characters of the original series, for all of the reasons you described. She's such a great character to explore, and it sucks that we just got this. Holland and Talhoe before they became "domestic terrorist/rebels.

    You were kinder to this film than I was, lol. I *hated* this. I thought it was so bad that paradoxically I bought the BD that was released, only because I thought it was so bad I thought it deserved to be preserved so the fact this calamity happened would never be forgotten. (Well, that and to find out if Peter Doyle returned to voice Dominic again, even if it was for that awful app.)
    I am so glad you hit the point about ripping off Eva, because I could go into it *at length* how much I feel this movie ripped off. Compare the early poster for it to one of the early posters for Eva 2.22. Look at how Dewey is crucified in a vast underground chamber at a military base and has something strange going on with his legs. Look at all the half-assed religious symbolism like Dewey literally being Evil Jesus now for some reason. Those are just a few points but once you begin looking you *really* find more than you'd expect. Amusingly, I only discovered after watching Eva 1.11 again following this movie that Tomoki Kyoda did in fact work on Eva, he's in the credits for it! It's almost too easy to think that his working on it led to what this film, and this trilogy, became. Like he and Bones saw Eva and other properties like Code Geass rebooting themselves with new movies and wanted a piece of that pie.
    I just look at this movie and I see a self-indulgent product produced with absolutely no checks on the creator. I do hold Kyoda primarily responsible for this mainly due to that Otaquest interview in which he talks about wanting to achieve "auteurism." Maybe that's unfairly assigning too much blame to one person, but that's what I saw when I watched this - Kyoda's mad attempt at being artsy and "deep" and trying way too hard, to predictable results. I'm sure Dai Sato and others do have a role in it but... I don't know. Who comes up with ridiculous ideas like making Dominic an app? Yandere Blood Tears Eureka? And as nice as it is that the use of old footage has actual context this time... did nobody check and notice that Anemone's personality whipsaws back and forth between "Fuuka" and the original Anemone because they reused footage of her old self?
    I just don't know what the point is anymore. The Eureka in this movie is not someone I care about. Ironically, considering her entire character is "I made up worlds to get my happy ending," I don't feel like she *deserves* that happy ending after what she apparently did. I'm sure they'll find some dumb way to rationalize all of it and make it all Dewey's fault, so whatever 'epic' battle they all have with him in the third movie wipes away Eureka's responsibility just so she can be handed a happy ending that's not earned. Ironic.
    I liked Eva 3.33. I'll even admit I enjoyed FRANXX. This movie broke me.
    EDIT: Oh yeah, and did I mention I actually crossed Kyoda on Twitter by criticising this movie's CGI? I'm not making that up - Sakuga Blog posted a clip from it and in response to someone asking if Eureka Seven was still using time travel after what AO became, I summarized some of its issues and mentioned the lip flaps not matching in the CGI parts. Kyoda actually quote tweeted me and went on a thread about crunch on animators, which I guess is why those sections of this movie are in that ugly, borderline unfinished CGI? Don't get me wrong, I'm well aware of the crisis in the industry with crunch and I think it's bullshit what is done to animators. If that's why a portion of the movie is in that CGI I can forgive it. But it seems so remarkably petty that Kyoda did this, and the last time I looked for the thread, I couldn't find it. I think he seriously deleted it.

      Wow thats crazy about that twitter exchange. It just confirms to me that he got a huge ego problem if he made a twitter thread about that. @@SylTag01 The Twitter thing is almost where I'd think it wasn't true if I hadn't been involved in it, to be honest. The dialogue about crunch conditions in the anime industry is an important one we should be having, but what gets me is how he found it in the first place - was he searching his own name or the name of his movie on Twitter to come across it? Either way it really does demonstrate an ego, I think...

    I figured it out what is going on a eureka is fighting for Renton like how Renton was fighting for eureka people that don't understand this needs a stand back and really think about what's actually going on understanding the psychology the physics and also quantum mechanics of our reality in the reality of the anime people do not realize it now but this anime is more in-depth more creative and has more deeper thoughts than Neon Genesis Evangelion does

    So, I've only ever seen the original series, and am just rewatching it now. What are you referring to when you say the franchise has been "shit" since 2010?

      Pocketful of rainbows came out in 2009 and that was the last decent thing that came out imo. I said 2010 because I saw it in 2010 should have said 2009.
