9 rounds makes for a pretty big cylinder. I have one of these bad boys and it's huge and heavy. I think modern revolvers went to a standard 6 or 5 (occasionally 7, much less occasionally more) because it's the optimal configuration to get that many rounds into the cylinder while still retaining a good amount of steel in between them, in an overall smaller package.

9mm in a revolver would be highly impractical since 9mm is designed for pistols and revolvers use heavy cartridges since they take longer to load than a pistol, can't hold as many rounds as a pistol and shoot slower than most pistols. .357 Magnum would be a more practical choice as it is literally a 9mm round with a longer case, higher muzzle velocity and more stopping power.
The chamber is so big with 9 rounds that it would be difficult to consider it a conceal carry. That is the reason many gunslingers used 5 or fewer round chambers in their revolvers. Any more than that and it is too large and heavy to carry around and conceal.
I just imagine that they used to shoot a lot with the larger barrel since it’s just a blunderbuss and much simpler to reload than the cylinder. Or don’t even reload at all and just pick a saber lol

As a Black Powder Shooter, lemmie tell yall a few things. 1. While this looks almost comical today, this thing was an absolute BEAST. If the terminator showed up two hundred years ago, this is the gun he'd be sporting. 2. Most guns back then could only load a single shot at the time, with the exception of six shooters. So, consider the scale. The average rifle had one shot. The new fangled revolver had six. And this beast had nine that could be loaded at once, with an additional mini-shotgun payload! But in reality, it'd only take slightly longer than loading the average six shooter, and it'd actually be FASTER than loading a revolver and a shotgun separately. In conclusion, this is the pinnacle of black powder revolvers.
To all who remark about its reload time. There's a few reasons why this was so advanced. First of all. I think the shotgun was for emergencies only. You'd save that so if when you run out on the ammo in the cylinders and someone attacks, you then flip the switch and use the shotgun to keep you safe and shoot the attacker. Many I think... think a user would fire all the pistol balls and then also fire the shotgun. Then reload. I don't think it was meant for that. The shotgun was your "ace in the hole" so to speak. Using it this way means you never was fully unloaded at anytime. Next, if you look at the design of the shotgun, it's pretty genius. Let's use Russian roulette as an example. If you spin the chamber with one bullet, you never know when it will shoot. With the design we see here, you always assured that the shotgun is in the center and ready to fire... always! So even if you're unsure of is the next round is loaded or not, you know the shotgun is ready with a flip of the switch. Lastly, people back then carried 2, sometimes 3 or 4 pistols. So they just switched guns when they was out of ammo. So if you had two of these and a rifle, you was a God back then I'm sure lol
So many uneducated folks round here. Y'all need to learn more about 19th century guns. The LeMat is what is called a "Cap and Ball" revolver: the standard handgun type during the 1860s. These revolvers couldn't use modern metallic cartridges, so each chamber had to be loaded individually with black powder and lead bullet (either ball shaped or conical shaped). Load powder and projectile in each chamber and seal them off with beeswax. Each chamber had inserts for metal caps (called nipples) to placed on them, which were needed so the gun's hammer could strike it and ignite the black powder inside the chamber and send the bullet out of the barrel. A popular alternative to loading loose powder and bullet are paper cartridges. These contained the powder and bullet inside a nitrate paper container coated with beeswax. Needless to say they are a lot faster than the former method. Many of these cap and ball revolvers were later converted to use metallic cartridges in the 1870s. The cylinder is replaced with a cartridge cylinder and a loading gate added for inserting cartridges.

Was cool seeing the Man in Black use this in the show Westworld. His was modified to take cartridges.
Nice illustrated.
Its take a long time just to reload the gun, the soldier really need backup while reloading.
Revlover’s special metal ball launcher.
very smart construcion , I like it .
"A good rifleman could reload his gun in 20 seconds."
LeMat users: *Visible jealousy*
In past : firearms has a big caliber even a pistol, hard to reload but has a massive damage
In future : firearms has a smaller caliber, but has a excellent acuraccy and penetration
This was the age before bullets with casings became the norm. For the better because this takes the entire Godfather movie just to reload the whole thing.
Surprising thing is that caps are still used to this day... Not for lethal force, but for cap guns.
I wanna see a modified version of this that accepts .45 and have easier reloads (especially the shotgun part) but that's probably going to be unlikely
For you kiddos who complain about the reloading speed, remember that in the war of independence, they were using muskets. This one here is already a technological achievement
I’m amused how many people complain about how long it took to reload.
The M16 +GL of its time.
you know where i can find the lemat revolver´s diagram [ side view, real size ] internal mechanics and all things that i will need to make ?
because i want make a hybrid revolver from lemat and single action army or colt navy.
Sick weapon to hurt your bullies!
isnt this just a recording of that game world of guns?
but dam a revolver with a built in shotgun
Make one for the Walker or 1851 navy
Everybody is laughing until this goes to cartrige conversion. Any way, beautiful mechanism.
Updating the reload method to current models with cartridge, it would be a perfect weapon, 9 shots and 1 extra shotgun, I don't know why they don't, well yes, chargers already occupy the market.
Amazing weapon.
And I thought muskets were a pain, but this... Oh my
Imagine someone gets into a fire fight with this gun
Carry preloaded cylinders with multiple firearms at your side
In it's day it would be the undisputed winner since everything else only held 6 shots and reloaded in the same way (or worse) as this.
A rifled musket with a bayonet was the primary weapon. A foot solider would draw a revolver in an emergency and it would not be reloaded in battle.
For officers it would be revolver first, sword second.
How are barrels aligned ? There are no marks on the chamber
And now I remember reloud in red dead redemption 2 online
Any way a modern version of this can be made that uses cased ammo
Arthur Morgan says he approves of this educational video
Should make one for the Carthage fire lemat.
красиво...особенно центральный ствол с картечью.
С таким револьвером, явно нужен будет еще один
Thank God for cartridges
Damn that invisible figure reload so fast
easy damn nag
looks like it's dangerous tho. what if the barrel get too hot and then you add the powder just so you can have it blow on your face?
People be saying that the guns too long to reload, but come on. It only needs to work once and boom, skipped reload time
Remember you can put in paper cartidgies so the reload isn't that slow
Everyone talks about reloading, but no one talks about cleaning it after!!!
Ball ammunition goes right through
Such a strange pistol
What happens if you try to shoot it without those red cap things?
Red Dead Redemption 2 Hidden (not officially in theirs and other old players guide) Best Revolver that could obliterate any body parts using the Shotgun buckshot Shell. A lot of old players don't know that. Only purchasable unlock after a party with most influential interesting people in the game. This video shows how its stats in reloading takes time and enlightens the gamers.
If this beauty used actual center fire bullets. This revolver would be a problem
LeMat was basically the first handgun with something similar to a grenade launcher
Shotgun 20 ga
i like how the ball ammo just magically appears as the powder is dumped in lol oh well still a cool video
At 2:20 you can see the charge, wad and ball being inserted in sequence, then tamped down by the rod.
