Art of War states that to trick your enemies you should first trick your friends. Actually, Hiromatsu's death was not planned ahead. Hiromatsu and Toranaga were friends and knew each other well. Hiromatsu knew that Toranaga had some plan, but he didn't know what exactly. Events during this meeting (other generals refusing to sign their pledge) could have sabotaged Toranaga's plan so Hiromatsu knew, that he had to do something to push them back on the right track. This intense scene between Hiromatsu and Toranaga is a perfect example of "three hearts". What they were saying was their"face to the world" but their true dialogue went without the words, through their eyes. It was their "heart for friends." Toranaga's greatness as a strategist lies not only in planning events but also in using given circumstances to his advantage.
It was not planned ahead of time. Hiromatsu knows Toranaga so well he knows what he’s doing. Because he knows what Toranaga is doing he understands what he needs to sell it (he knows his duty well). So like the son he goes out in service of his lord
This episode is the heaviest yet can't wait to see EP9 - CRIMSON SKY! When the shows Underscores certain text it means a substantial detail. Recall way back in EP1 "Anjin", Hiromatsu shares that Usami's (Fuji San's husband, the one that gave the outburst & spoke out of line) was reckless to which Toranaga replies "No - he does not approve of all this pointless death." He is held hostage but doing so will not give a reason the armies of 4 regents to wage war against one..which is fruitless death. Then, in EP6 "ladies of the willow world" Hiromatsu suggested to put into action ' Crimson Sky ' with Omi San adding that "they still have time" and to risk it and rush in with an attack. His last line was "find me a plan that isn't certain death" - there will be NO CRIMSON SKY. Lastly & faithfully - after all the facade that has been building up about his health, Hiromatsu says " So you *do* believe in pointless death". Essential the lie was bought in blood and his friend made the sacrifice to make it believable.
