The seppuku scene was about selling the story - but it wasn't planned to go down like that. The other lords were spinning out of Toranaga's control, so Hiromatsu took it on himself to put the plan back on track by taking the focus himself. It's a testament to their long friendship (and the brilliant actors) that they work the whole thing out as they are saying one thing and conveying something quite different to each other. It's a totally drastic move, but it's a sign of how loyal he is to Toranaga and his cause.
Toda Hiromatsu sacrificing himself by seppuku was a very intense and emotional scene. I definitely felt it and was rough to watch. Although Toranaga lost his most trusted General, confidant and friend during this scene it was very important. Several of Toranaga's men shared their concerns about Toranaga surrendering instead of pursuing the war he promised them. Toranaga and Hiromatsu's plan in which Hiromatsu announces he will commit seppuku if Toranaga doesn’t stop “throwing away all that we have fought for” was very strategic. They had to be convincing with this plan to trick the Council of Regents into believing Toranaga is serious about surrender. Toranaga was convinced that one of Ishido's spies was there observing their actions and temperament. They had to be convincing in everything they did. Toranaga and Hiromatsu's plan displayed the Bushido moral code of the Samurai during feudal Japan which promoted the importance of loyalty, honor and martial arts. The Bushido philosophy refers to not fearing death and dying for valor. Hiromatsu's death was not in vain and stresses the importance of their code of loyalty and honor by sacrificing self for the good of the many. This was about not fracturing Japan and keeping their peace, while keeping his aim on becoming the next Shogun.
I love that Hiromatsu noticed that another one of the lieutenants tried to step up, so he butted in to do it himself because he was willing to go all the way and anyone else might have dropped the ball halfway.

Yeah, I wonder if Drew will still feel the same way about the plan afterwards.

Pops went out like an OG
The last three episodes are some of the best TV I've seen in a while.
Every episode is crazier than the last one, this show just plays chess and screw with your emotions just the right amount 😅
The seppuku scene was one of the most tense scenes of media I’ve seen. Had a tear running down my face it was so emotional
Torunaga makes Palpatine look like Jar Jar
I read this in Paul Mooney's voice
Gotta admire Hiro-matsu's intestinal fortitude; he really let it all hang out. Takes guts to do that.
You guys do your little skits so well.
That was the most intense seppuku scene I've ever seen in media and it was crazy emotional.
I love that Hiromatsu noticed that another one of the lieutenants tried to step up, so he butted in to do it himself because he was willing to go all the way and anyone else might have dropped the ball halfway.
Church next to the tea house … nah bruh that s$&@ is diabolical 😂
Yup. The courtesans deserved better neighbors.
The non verbal face acting by so many of the actors is top tier
You guys get it. I enjoy your analyses.
I'm so glad y'all guys finally seen this episode. Tragic and emotional but the last two are going to be as well
Bruh the next episode is going to make you look like 🤯🤯🤯🤯👀👀👀👀👀😭😭😭😭😭
i would not survive this culture. If one mistake or speaking out of turn requires me to kill myself. Id be dead in the first 5 minutes of this show.
Toranaga is c o l d
Good morning y’all
All of the book is adapted in this first season but I believe they are making a season 2.
Wow, I love this show and your reactions ❤
The entire book has been covered in season 1 but, there have been reports of it getting more seasons.
Toranaga is based on a real life character (not naming him so you guys don't spoil the story). After the show, you should check it out
Good luck with this one, it's a bit deep
It is kinda handy - hang with the ladies and get forgiveness next door 😉
