    That seppuku scene alone proves that Hiroyuki Sanada deserves every award.
    The amount of layers he put in that performance is insane.

      I've watched a hell of a lot of movies and TV in my forty years, but I don't think I've ever seen a more nuanced and heartbreaking example of facial acting in my entire life. Hell, his face acting (and acting in general) throughout the series is simply sublime. I feel a little bad for Walton Goggins that his exceptional role in _Fallout_ had to come in the same year as _Shōgun_

    The look that crosses Lady Ochibas face when Daiyoin dies was a brilliant move by Fumi Nikaido (Ochiba). With that one look she demonstrated how controlled the character is. She went from genuinely heartbroken to hiding behind the eight fold fence in about 2 seconds. She really did love Daiyoin.

    In the first episode, Toranaga said "I don't approve of all this pointless death" to Hiromatsu regarding that guy that decided to end his bloodline for acting out of line at that meeting.
    I think Hiromatsu knew that Toranaga would have stopped him from committing seppaku if he were really giving up. And him saying "so you DO believe in pointless death" was Hiromatsu's way of letting Toranaga know that he knows he's faking and realizes his death wouldn't be "pointless."

      Someone also pointed out that Toranaga said to Hiromatsu that Crimson Sky was a "pointless death". Their bond is so deep that they understand each other even when they talked in codes. So he basically, said that the plan is in full effect. Toranaga just needs a great selling point to which Hiromatsu offered to do that part.

    Hiromatsu didn't know about the plan, but he knew Toranaga well enough to understand what he was doing and what he'd have to do to make the plan work. He needed the other vassals to believe that Toranaga was defeated.
    Remember in the last episode when the madame Gin asked Toranaga why he would leave his weakened garrison exposed and she guessed he was up to something. Toranage realised that is she suspected he was playing a trick, then his other enemies would too. He knew he needed to do something to make everyone believe he was giving up.
    Nagakado dying gave him time and an excuse for losing heart. Then Hiromatsu took his own life because if Toranaga was willing to let his oldest friend and right hand man die, then he must surely be accepting his defeat.

    The reason why Toranaga ordered a tea house to be built next to the church was so that the insightful Ogin could keep an eye on the church's movements. Not out of spite.

      It's also a matter of city planning with class division in mind. While "Oiran" are better regarded than common prostitutes, they are still sex-workers. They don't rank that high in society. Neither do foreigners (in particular due to religion. The Japanese powers of the time tried their utmost to curb the spread of religion while still having trade with Portugal and Spain). You can't have a church and a red light district right next to the castle, where the ruling body would live, or it's immediate surroundings, where higher society would live. There is a bit of a time issue compared to real history as well, since the red light district was founded in 1617, 3 years after Catholicism was outright banned by Tokugawa (the inspiration for Toranaga), and all the priests expelled.

    • @rhonafenwick5643
      @rhonafenwick5643 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I do agree for the most part, but I have no doubt Toranaga would have deeply relished the ironic humour as well. Especially given what he says to Yabushige in the final episode, that the main reason he kept the Anjin around was because "he makes me laugh". Also remember that one scene of Toranaga bantering with Kiri no kata early in the series. Toranaga does have a sense of humour; we just rarely see it because of the bleakness of the events involved in the series

    It's made clear Buntaro loved Mariko in the early years of their marriage but she always resented him because of her family trauma and then in turn he began to resent her for her resentment and so forth until they both basically hated each other though we see here Buntaro always hoped they could be happy together

    • @voratittchunharuckchot9711
      @voratittchunharuckchot9711 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      I think Buntaro's action toward Mariko is also due to the custom. Mariko's family betrayed their lord, which is considered to be great taboo. So Buntaro can't show any affection or any action that might hinted he support her family's action. Due to his honor as a samurai, he has to be mean to her even though he love Mariko.
      At least that is how I interpreted it.

    Hiromatsu didn’t commit sepukku on Toranaga’s orders. Rather he realized that Toranaga needed an ally to defect to give the illusion to Osaka that Toranaga is truly defeated.
    However 3 of Toranaga’s generals refused to sign the surrender treaty. Realizing this, Hiromatsu took the moment away and decided on the spot that he will be the one to sacrifice his life for Toranaga’s plan.
    Rather than losing 3 generals, Hiromatsu ensured that Toranaga only loses 1.

    This story is based on real historical figures, with the character "Toranaga" modeled after the most famous Japanese warlord of the Sengoku period, who later became Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate.
    Tokugawa Ieyasu's greatest achievement was the development of Edo, which was once just marshland, into the largest city in the world at the time, known as the world's first "million city." Additionally, Edo had advanced infrastructure such as sewage systems, making it one of the most progressive and hygienic cities of its time.
    Currently, Tokyo has the highest GDP of any city in the world, with New York City in second place. Since Tokyo was originally called Edo, it can be attributed to Tokugawa Ieyasu's efforts in building it from scratch.
    Tokugawa Ieyasu enforced a policy of isolation, cutting off all foreign interactions except with the Netherlands. Japan became a land closed to foreigners for two hundred years, during which remarkable cultural developments occurred, such as ukiyo-e (woodblock prints), Noh theater, and Kabuki, leading to a cultural renaissance in Japan.
    Subsequently, during the Meiji era, Japan rapidly modernized its military, winning the First Sino-Japanese War against China and the Russo-Japanese War against Russia, eventually expanding its influence over vast territories in Asia. All of these achievements were made possible in part by the legacy of Tokugawa Ieyasu.

    Fantastic episode that threw many viewers the wrong way but you seemed to have got it. It all connects to the "third heart" explained in an earlier episode and not revealing your intentions to ANYONE, even those closest to you. You can still be betrayed out of love and the best intentions that do not have the desired effect. Nobody knew what Toranaga was planning, including Mariko. Hirumatsu only caught on at the last moment. He knew he must commit seppuku as his duty. Crazy and very contentious from the Western perspective.

    I'm going to take it hard for this. While there's never an action that would excuse physical violence toward your spouse (unless you're defending yourself) we should remember that Mariko "pillowed" Blackthorne very, very soon after her husband's apparent death. I'm not defending Buntaro, I'm just saying he's not the only one who crossed a line. If Mariko had "died" and Buntaro went right to bed with Fuji (or someone) we'd all think he was a dog. Be kind when you lambast me. 😉

      False. He made it known at the end here that Mariko IS his plan. Not his already depleted army. His defeat had to look real for her move to work. Having more generals turn on him would've made that even more real. His bff just got in too deep before realizing what was going on and eventually had no choice but to follow through or risk ruining the plan. The old whore ended up being smarter than him. At least she had the sense to be like "yeah you're right my bad what do i know im just an old whore" and leaving before losing her own head last episode.

    If I can recommend another fantastically written show that somehow exceeds the confines of its IP: Andor. It has a LOT of people from both Game of Thrones and Chernobyl and is written by Tony Gilroy who wrote Michael Clayton. Don’t let the Star Wars setting discourage you; it is fantastic on so many levels beyond that

    Taiko and his wife story remind me of the story of Abraham and his wife mistaking god intention by taking concubine instead of being patient

    You two love drama. There is a space opera that I think you would love called Battlestar Galactica.
