I own a 1974 z1a i bought new in New Zealand in 74 when I was 20.still own it, it's a European model with a long back mudgaurd. Im slowly bringing it back to new, Ive only had the head off with burnt exhaust valve's, my fault. It also has a genuine kawasaki twin discs kit that i fitted in later 74,the next big purchase is a 4 into 4 exhaust

I'm a bit disappointed. When I saw "Road Test" I thought you were actually going to ride the damn thing, not just talk about it. That being said, I was impressed with your honesty about the handling. You were spot on. The handling is actually pretty good, for a bike with a long wheelbase (as you said), weighs in around 540 lbs and carries that weight a bit high. Many people, especially you Brits, compare it to a Triumph or Norton and say the handling is crap. You are comparing it to bikes that weigh much less, are narrower, have a lower center of gravity and stiffer suspension. Of course it's going to come out second best. It's like saying a Rolls Royce doesn't handle as well as an Aston Martin. There were many mods that would improve the handling. You already mentioned better tires and rear shocks. Some people changed the swing arm bushings. The originals were OK when new but they wore out fast.
I read one article where they welded in some extra gussets to stiffen the frame. Later models used thicker wall tubing to get the same result. A front fork brace was a popular addition that mainly helped during braking. Speaking of the brakes, the single disc was very good when dry, but not so good when wet. Dual drilled discs and better pads were a big improvement. Lastly, there was a mod that was cheap, easy and actually worked. Simply replace the top fork nuts with ones that had an extension (about 1 inch) machined into them to compress the springs a bit. These were advertised in all the m/c magazines of the day. If you were too cheap to buy them you could just make up your own spacer and re-use the stock nuts. Oops, almost forgot. Another brake mod was to change the rubber hoses to braided steel lines. This got rid of that spongy feeling.
Enough about handling mods. I must partially disagree with you about vibration. I never noticed much in the foot pegs. A little bit in the handle bars. This could be cured with fatter, softer grips and/or lead weights in the ends of the bars. The seat was another matter. It was very comfortable for an hour or so and then my bum and private parts would go numb.
I was going to change it for an after market one but never got around to it before I traded the bike in on a car. I loved that bike, wish I had kept it, but you can't ride a bike in the winter in Ontario and I had to commute 25 miles to and from college every day.

I have a ‘76 Z900 and a ‘89 RC30. The bevel drive L twin ducati is sweet. However, I’ve never been an anorak and so both are very modified. The RC30 with many HRC parts including NEW kit pistons, beryllium valve seats, no starter plus loads else because it’s a track bike and if you’re a purist, the Z9 will make you cry…Howeve I also have a bog stock unrestored ‘76 KZ900LTD as well.

An RC30 with HRC kit parts is my dream bike. I have the little brother NC30 which is pretty nice in it's own right (and rare as hens teeth in Canada) but honestly, they do need at least a few mods to be perfect. They are so quiet with the stock exhaust that a full system is a must! They can use a bit of weight reduction too. My dad has a '74 and '75 Z1 900 so I'm a big fan of both Zeds and Honda V4's.

The RC 30 is very robust. Mine is more of a garage queen as it always was my dream bike as I spannered for a U.K. endurance team who dumped their GSXR 750 after it was truly crushed by RC 30s at the 24 hour Le Mans race in 1988. Indeed, after I bought my RC in '99 I was offered the teams jetting kit because they gave up racing in' 92. I was invited to their ' Final abandon ' party and there were several well known faces there! The Z9 came, like the RC 30 at a bargain price. Being the awful custom, I had no qualms to ' beautify ' it!@@weatherproof1

A z1000 like that, no later than the J, then update the running gear, brakes and shocks. Maybe even get the frame gusset kit, box all the original parts, maybe a mild cam, not radical, just a little more smart than the original setup - carbs, exhaust, that sort of thing. Best of both worlds when you have the original equipment to bolt back on, cause you'd never keep me off of it!

The world has a good selection of motorcycle brokers and this particular example likes to talk, though I'm not sure what his qualifications are, At least there seems to be less talk regarding Blockchain investments.
