By far the best ONI tutorial out there. I appreciate all the work that went into this video. Like the other person said, I think you should release your vids Joe Rogan style - ie - one massive video for people who are nuts, then cut up the segments and release all of them. Hopefully pull in more ad revenue. Keep up the great work.
Yeah, I am considering releasing smaller videos just because huge ones are so hard to approach. Maybe after the DLC releases, I'll start making shorter tutorials and update these ones a bit.
Really love ur mega tutorial series and it has been a great help to my game. I am a beginner and man this game is just so difficult and there is so much things to do.
It gets easier once you've run into problems a few times so you can anticipate them. Mostly to do with food and oxygen. It tends to be too late when you notice that you have a problem with those two.

@@Luffy-fw8id A lot to learn, that's for sure. What I did early on was start over and over again to get used to the early game, which is really the most critical time. I disagree with almost every single TH-camr about learning this game, though. My main tip to new players is to accept a new dupe every time the printer pings. You'll die horribly obviously. But it also speeds all the early problems up so you can be forced to deal with them. Doing this over and over again is how I know exactly when to plant things, where to dig, build orders, what isn't important etc. Anyway, the game definitely got nerfed for release, so it could be worse. Slimelung for example used to take about 4 cycles before it killed your dupes in the early access. You had to quickly build a clinic and train a doctor to deal with it or the dupe was dead. Now I basically never build a hospital at all because I just don't need it. Slimeling patients just sneeze a little and then get better by themselves. Gases also fell down and to the right before, because that's how gases behave on earth. I was one of the people commenting on how silly this was inside an asteroid. Anyway, you always grew mushrooms on the bottom right side of the base because of that. And you never put bedrooms there.
Out of all the people i have watched over the years since this game has been out, you are by far, in my opinion the most understandable one in explaining the processes of multiple different ways to do things. 1. You dont talk too fast! 2. You explain in pretty good detail the steps that you need to go through with all these videos you put out. 3. You dont show just 10 seconds of something and then skip your video ahead to something else. 4. I REALLY REALLY appreciate the FAHRENHEIT over Celcius, since i dont understand the Celcius side of things when explaining temperatures. 5. The fact that you take the time to explain the differences in all the different building types and there conductivity ext.... that is a major help. And also the fact that i am not annoyed with your voice LOL... I enjoy the long videos they may be longer then most and have allot of info involved in them, but they are in my opinion the BEST tutorials on You Tube for Oxygen Not Included! Thank you again for all you do, if i could i would pay you for your time lol 2020 has been a rough year, but thank you for keeping us sane.

@@Magnet_MD On the Conserving Power tutorial, you give the examples very well. The only part I have a hard time following is how to create the Gas shutoff/Gas Pipe Element Sensor setup. You went into Power view but not the gas view. So can't see the pipe setup.

I really appreciate the detailed overview of power in Oxygen Not Included. It's been my greatest challenge with the game so far. I think that's more due to my lack of appreciation for automation and sticking too much with Tier 1 tech.. If you haven't already, individual tutorials for each specific kind of power would be tight. I will make more bite-sized tutorials and talk about all of the power sources (especially for the new ones in the DLC). This video already talks about specific builds/tutorials for every type of power in the base game, so you can just check out the chapters and watch the section about the power type you're interested in.

I have already watched several other videos from your channel (as well as others) and will be sticking to only your channel since the content is always educational and communicated clearly. I also prefer to fully understand all my options for my base, rather than regurgitating someone else's build and not knowing why I'm doing random things a specific way. I rarely post comments but I wanted to thank you for taking the time to explain why the different methods are more efficient by giving examples and building demonstrations; and not just declaring it (you don't just teach the how but also the why). When I watch your content I know I'll be better understanding the fundamentals of the game versus only absorbing shortcuts on what to duplicate into my game. I quite enjoy the long video when it's to the point and sliced in to sections. What I don't enjoy is someone uploading some non-edited video of them playing the game and in the title it's something I'm looking to learn about, when in fact it's just a gibberish play through. Great job on this guide, watched the whole thing, learned a lot.
This is exactly me right now lol! About 150 hours in a week and a half and realized that i can't make it any further without some deeper understanding. This video was so much easier to understand than the others!
Yeah I did watch the whole thing, but not because I am committed or because I want a cookie, it was because: You made an awesome video, you explained everything perfectly, you didn't waste any time and it was fun to watch, I also notice that there are almost no cuts in the entire thing and how flawlessly you made them not be necessary at all, quality stuff.
Oh a good tip with debug mode is you can press ctrl+U to speed up time as fast as the game can handle which could be really useful for the times you're forced to wait.

Extremely succinct and very thorough! Spaced Out is completely changing the research every month but this is the basics and the order may be different but it is still very very useful! I am well above a thousand hours in the game but I have not yet made my own steel and I have not quite been in the oil biome yet. I have been using Slicksters for all my oil. I have extreme demands for carbon dioxide. Polluted water, rockets, and oil. Once I run it into a carbon skimmer for the Pol water It is a very easy coolant on top of all that. It is just a blast to watch videos like this one and I have watched it a couple times before! It is a nice one to listen to in my earbuds for sleep, haha. You have a very good voice and it is very good to learn in your sleep.
If not for you I wouldn't have really been able to play this game at all. I even ended up making a logic based Power system in ONI that I"m really proud of because of your tutorials! Thanks so much for this!
For those wondering about power loads on wires: The normal wire can carry 1000 watts, meaning that in combination, only 1000 watts can be consumed on it. If you hook up three Manuel generators(1200 watts in total) with normal wire to structures that in total need less than 1k watts, nothing will brake and those 200 extra watts will be used to charge batteries which don’t count as consuming. If, however you hook those three generators to structures that in total *consume* 1.2 k watts, the load will be too great and things will start to break.
I didn't hear mentioned during the video: using 2 small transformers to supply power from heavy watt wires to conductive (refined) wires. backfeeding transformers: using an isolated power generator with small wires attached to the top of a transformer & the heavy watt on the bottom/load side. I wouldn't mind hearing more people talking about advanced power setups like using batteries as circuit isolators: You can have all generators and half your batteries all on a singke 1kw wire circuit (batteries aren't loads) then use the power relays to swap charged batteries for empty batteries (either by a timer or by smart batteries).

Thanks for this extensive tutorial. The hours flew by. ONI is a really difficult game. I've yet to complete it. My colony has never died, but with my busy schedule, what usually happens is that I play for 40 cycles or so, come back to the base after a couple of months, only to be super confused what the heck I was doing, so I simply start over.
Superdetailed tutorial, very very helpful, ty dude. I stumbled over ONI short before christmas...and dang, am I infected by it...xd. Solving problems and advance, thats a very nice mix. Since then, there are weird places, I think bout the game....in the bus, during TV-time, before falling asleep...etcetc^^
lol, same. I work a 12 hour shift and with literally nothing to do on those shifts because of the Holliday's, I started playing this...biggest mistake ever, super hooked
Sat through the entire video. Excellent video with concise beginner-friendly explanations. Though i think u'll get a lot more views if u split it into 40min videos and upload it after the dlc release, once interest peaks. I'm 1 of those mid-level players. Contrary to most ppl my early game is quite flawless and efficient. I undercover a lot of geysers and produce plastic quickly. Then i just get stuck. All my machinery are localized and not centralized for convenience. And i have no cooling loops. I find relocating all my machinery/circuits and employing snaking loops so daunting. And my base becomes so massive i can't keep micromanaging them and they constantly run into problems, like dropping items down ladders. The amount of new expansion and research done per day eventually grinds to a halt, and i have to restart.
Yeah, I was considering breaking these up into smaller segments, like a video only about natural gas power, or a video only about oil. Maybe once I get these "mega" tutorial series' done, and the DLC gets closer, I'll start making shorter videos.

So I’ve been watching this all day as I’ve been cleaning, but ironically enough, I got to the last part when you were talking about sending out cookies as I was making cookie dough to bake cookies😂
im a rather experienced new player, meaning ive played the game for a long time and understand the mechanics of most things but have no idea of the mid to upper level knowledge you have and show in these tutorials. could you do an indepth one for power saving tricks and such? that little bit at the beginning was an incredible insight into some strategies i've never seen.
Very true! I will update this video at some point to include that optimization. The thing we should note is that this doesn't always work 100% because sometimes you may want to route from a pipe to a gas storage container, meaning you need the shutoff. For things like oxygen though, for sure, you can always vent it back into the base.
By the way, would love to see all of your piping, cables etc on a finished base. It always gets out of hand especially with all the different power sources around the map.
I would love to watch a more thoroughly detailed video, where you go into those complicated expositions you mentioned (pro-tip: modular video segment to partition each phase, Example Given: cooling setup, then Power Automation setup, then Liquid Storage Tank setup, then line in, then line out), because you actually know everything required, and you can upload them using a per-system video style, starting with your game version; You could look at this a few ways: First: you get additional content from knowledge you already used, without negative connotation from audience due to re-hashing, because you are building a fully modular system; Second: you get to put in one third the work, because you can re-use video segments where you build a storage system, or you build a Room with cooling; you can run this video series after a series on Cooling techniques, and ways to generate cooling on maps where Geyser-type options are not available (to cool, or heat; exploring thermal alternatives, time lapses, liquid options, time-lapses, pre-processing, and video segments) Third: It's Free Real Estate; you are smart enough, I would love to watch a compiled video where you just grab your entire Power Tutorial series I just suggested in Reason two, immediately after watching this video; just to compare how comically massive this rabbit-hole goes to maximize efficiency with all these power sources; thus, garnering additional fan adoration. Fourth: You get to totally be lazy because you can build all these videos comprising half a year of releases, all within a few weeks.
The thing about this is that I as a new player doesn't understand most of these, needs a video about "How to build renewable power and how to handle them" kind of video. These helps, but even I don't know how to build these in-game at all...

I have struggled to get them to work, and I thought you piped to natural gas incorrectly, until the gas started to back up. The way the pipes were layed out, must be how I should set them up, but I didn’t get a good look 😊
Love your tutorials! One question I have is how do you set up the actual power grid to go out and run all the rest of your stuff? Is it just one big grid? Since the wire has limits, even if you have thousands and thousands of watts of production you still have to separate it out to different grids for the blocks of usage, right?
Yeah, that's what the transformers are for. They transform higher wattage wires into lower wattage, so everything is connected either to that heavy watt wire (which is connected to all of the batteries and power generators), or it's connected to a transformer that is connected to that central heavy watt wire.
@@Magnet_MD Oh I see it now. I didn't realize the heavier wires were a LOT heavier. I thought they were just 4 KW like the big transformer. So you can run 20 or 50 KW and then peel off 1 KW here and there. Thank you!
Not sure if this is due to the version I'm on or if I'm doing it incorrectly, but the gas filter setup from the conserving power section doesn't seem to work. With a normal filter, the gases stop moving altogether if the power goes out. However, with the automation filters, the gas will keep moving, just to the wrong places, which is even worse. A regular gas filter will be needed regardless to avoid sending the wrong gases into my power plants. My grid is suuuuper unreliable currently lol - is there a way to configure this so I can get these power savings while keeping reliable gas flow? I'm working to weed out unnecessary efficiency, but this would free up a ton of power.
Appreciate the video, loving the other series. Just have one question though. Why would you set the high threshold on your smart battery to anything less than 100%?
That's prevent wasting resources. A generator won't stop mid-animation even if the battery gets full. So lets say your battery bank is at 99% capacity and one cycle of your coal generators is enough to charge the batteries by 5%. So in this situation you would waste about 80% of the power from the generator cycle since your batteries are full. But if you have the high threshold set to 80-90% you'll never run into this overproduction issue.
As a new player I think you should mention the parts you're using especially the automated sensors cause I think they updated the looks of some of these except the names of it

couldn't put a dislike on this horrible video. How dare you blind my platinium dog eyes with so much perfection. You should be ashamed for bringing harm to my social life. Now that i watched it all, i need to do it myself... and god know how long i will fall into this again.
I gave up on the cheap gas filtering, it doesn't work for me and is now wrecking my setup. If the gasflow is not constant and stops, it makes mistakes and lets through oxygen to hydrogengenerators, it checks the gas, that is about to enter, not the gas entering :( .
@3:10 You forgot a 3rd method thats identical to the right shutoff demonstration but minus the shutoffs by using the automation of the vent where it opens/closes depending on what you set the sensor to detect. So you save extra power per shutoff you dont use @52:50 reservoirs dont over heat by the contents but by the atmosphere temperature and reservoir transfer the contents thermal energy to the tile below the output so best to build with insulated tile. @2:18:20 never a good habit to put tempshifts next to insulated tiles as you're forcing heat transfer, if you want mass on the edges you can use drywall
Good point! That would definitely be different than most ventilation setups that I use considering some of them will still need to travel through pipes to get to where they need to go. At least for making sure oxygen stays in your base, this is definitely a better solution than the one I mentioned.
I still use a 4th method: a valve set to 1g keeping a circle of pipe supplied with a constant loop of a single fluid, then use bridges to only add more of that element to the pipe segments. edit: this method has been nerfed in the big merge patch, valves seem to open up and allow more through each time you load, so valves must be within reach of dupes.

I quite enjoy the long video when it's to the point and sliced in to sections. What I don't enjoy is someone uploading some non-edited video of them playing the game and in the title it's something I'm looking to learn about, when in fact it's just a gibberish play through.

Oh a good tip with debug mode is you can press ctrl+U to speed up time as fast as the game can handle which could be really useful for the times you're forced to wait.

Extremely succinct and very thorough! Spaced Out is completely changing the research every month but this is the basics and the order may be different but it is still very very useful!
I am well above a thousand hours in the game but I have not yet made my own steel and I have not quite been in the oil biome yet. I have been using Slicksters for all my oil. I have extreme demands for carbon dioxide. Polluted water, rockets, and oil. Once I run it into a carbon skimmer for the Pol water It is a very easy coolant on top of all that.
It is just a blast to watch videos like this one and I have watched it a couple times before! It is a nice one to listen to in my earbuds for sleep, haha. You have a very good voice and it is very good to learn in your sleep.
If not for you I wouldn't have really been able to play this game at all. I even ended up making a logic based Power system in ONI that I"m really proud of because of your tutorials! Thanks so much for this!

For those wondering about power loads on wires:
The normal wire can carry 1000 watts, meaning that in combination, only 1000 watts can be consumed on it. If you hook up three Manuel generators(1200 watts in total) with normal wire to structures that in total need less than 1k watts, nothing will brake and those 200 extra watts will be used to charge batteries which don’t count as consuming. If, however you hook those three generators to structures that in total *consume* 1.2 k watts, the load will be too great and things will start to break.
I didn't hear mentioned during the video: using 2 small transformers to supply power from heavy watt wires to conductive (refined) wires.
backfeeding transformers: using an isolated power generator with small wires attached to the top of a transformer & the heavy watt on the bottom/load side.
I wouldn't mind hearing more people talking about advanced power setups like using batteries as circuit isolators: You can have all generators and half your batteries all on a singke 1kw wire circuit (batteries aren't loads) then use the power relays to swap charged batteries for empty batteries (either by a timer or by smart batteries).

Thanks for this extensive tutorial. The hours flew by. ONI is a really difficult game. I've yet to complete it. My colony has never died, but with my busy schedule, what usually happens is that I play for 40 cycles or so, come back to the base after a couple of months, only to be super confused what the heck I was doing, so I simply start over.

Superdetailed tutorial, very very helpful, ty dude. I stumbled over ONI short before christmas...and dang, am I infected by it...xd. Solving problems and advance, thats a very nice mix. Sat through the entire video. Excellent video with concise beginner-friendly explanations. Though i think u'll get a lot more views if u split it into 40min videos and upload it after the dlc release, once interest peaks.
I'm 1 of those mid-level players. Contrary to most ppl my early game is quite flawless and efficient. I undercover a lot of geysers and produce plastic quickly. Then i just get stuck. All my machinery are localized and not centralized for convenience. And i have no cooling loops. I find relocating all my machinery/circuits and employing snaking loops so daunting.
And my base becomes so massive i can't keep micromanaging them and they constantly run into problems, like dropping items down ladders. The amount of new expansion and research done per day eventually grinds to a halt, and i have to restart.
Yeah, I was considering breaking these up into smaller segments, like a video only about natural gas power, or a video only about oil. Maybe once I get these "mega" tutorial series' done, and the DLC gets closer, I'll start making shorter videos.

im a rather experienced new player, meaning ive played the game for a long time and understand the mechanics of most things but have no idea of the mid to upper level knowledge you have and show in these tutorials. could you do an indepth one for power saving tricks and such? that little bit at the beginning was an incredible insight into some strategies i've never seen.

On 5:05 mins, on right side you can do it even more better. Directly running pipe to bottom then hooking the sensor to a vent
Very true! I will update this video at some point to include that optimization.
The thing we should note is that this doesn't always work 100% because sometimes you may want to route from a pipe to a gas storage container, meaning you need the shutoff. For things like oxygen though, for sure, you can always vent it back into the base.

By the way, would love to see all of your piping, cables etc on a finished base. It always gets out of hand especially with all the different power sources around the map.
I would love to watch a more thoroughly detailed video, where you go into those complicated expositions you mentioned (pro-tip: modular video segment to partition each phase, Example Given: cooling setup, then Power Automation setup, then Liquid Storage Tank setup, then line in, then line out), because you actually know everything required, and you can upload them using a per-system video style, starting with your game version;
You could look at this a few ways:
First: you get additional content from knowledge you already used, without negative connotation from audience due to re-hashing, because you are building a fully modular system;
Second: you get to put in one third the work, because you can re-use video segments where you build a storage system, or you build a Room with cooling; you can run this video series after a series on Cooling techniques, and ways to generate cooling on maps where Geyser-type options are not available (to cool, or heat; exploring thermal alternatives, time lapses, liquid options, time-lapses, pre-processing, and video segments)
Third: It's Free Real Estate; you are smart enough, I would love to watch a compiled video where you just grab your entire Power Tutorial series I just suggested in Reason two, immediately after watching this video; just to compare how comically massive this rabbit-hole goes to maximize efficiency with all these power sources; thus, garnering additional fan adoration.
Fourth: You get to totally be lazy because you can build all these videos comprising half a year of releases, all within a few weeks.

The thing about this is that I as a new player doesn't understand most of these, needs a video about "How to build renewable power and how to handle them" kind of video. These helps, but even I don't know how to build these in-game at all...

Love your tutorials! One question I have is how do you set up the actual power grid to go out and run all the rest of your stuff? Is it just one big grid? Since the wire has limits, even if you have thousands and thousands of watts of production you still have to separate it out to different grids for the blocks of usage, right?
Yeah, that's what the transformers are for. They transform higher wattage wires into lower wattage, so everything is connected either to that heavy watt wire (which is connected to all of the batteries and power generators), or it's connected to a transformer that is connected to that central heavy watt wire.
@@Magnet_MD Oh I see it now. I didn't realize the heavier wires were a LOT heavier. I thought they were just 4 KW like the big transformer. So you can run 20 or 50 KW and then peel off 1 KW here and there. Thank you!
Not sure if this is due to the version I'm on or if I'm doing it incorrectly, but the gas filter setup from the conserving power section doesn't seem to work. With a normal filter, the gases stop moving altogether if the power goes out. However, with the automation filters, the gas will keep moving, just to the wrong places, which is even worse. A regular gas filter will be needed regardless to avoid sending the wrong gases into my power plants.
My grid is suuuuper unreliable currently lol - is there a way to configure this so I can get these power savings while keeping reliable gas flow? I'm working to weed out unnecessary efficiency, but this would free up a ton of power.

the inclusion of imperial units of temperature is... a choice.
metric system is obviously superior.
Appreciate the video, loving the other series. Just have one question though. Why would you set the high threshold on your smart battery to anything less than 100%?
That's prevent wasting resources. A generator won't stop mid-animation even if the battery gets full. So lets say your battery bank is at 99% capacity and one cycle of your coal generators is enough to charge the batteries by 5%. So in this situation you would waste about 80% of the power from the generator cycle since your batteries are full. But if you have the high threshold set to 80-90% you'll never run into this overproduction issue.
As a new player I think you should mention the parts you're using especially the automated sensors cause I think they updated the looks of some of these except the names of it

I gave up on the cheap gas filtering, it doesn't work for me and is now wrecking my setup. If the gasflow is not constant and stops, it makes mistakes and lets through oxygen to hydrogengenerators, it checks the gas, that is about to enter, not the gas entering :( .
@3:10 You forgot a 3rd method thats identical to the right shutoff demonstration but minus the shutoffs by using the automation of the vent where it opens/closes depending on what you set the sensor to detect. So you save extra power per shutoff you dont use
@52:50 reservoirs dont over heat by the contents but by the atmosphere temperature and reservoir transfer the contents thermal energy to the tile below the output so best to build with insulated tile.
@2:18:20 never a good habit to put tempshifts next to insulated tiles as you're forcing heat transfer, if you want mass on the edges you can use drywall
Good point! That would definitely be different than most ventilation setups that I use considering some of them will still need to travel through pipes to get to where they need to go. At least for making sure oxygen stays in your base, this is definitely a better solution than the one I mentioned.
I still use a 4th method: a valve set to 1g keeping a circle of pipe supplied with a constant loop of a single fluid, then use bridges to only add more of that element to the pipe segments.
edit: this method has been nerfed in the big merge patch, valves seem to open up and allow more through each time you load, so valves must be within reach of dupes.
