    It's nice to have fresh tutorials for ONI. One of the problems I find is that there's too many outdated videos for this game, so your content is greatly appreciated!

    I made a petroleum boiler in a debug world, and I did another step on saving petroleum, once the reservoir (a petroleum pool) was low enough, it would sense it and turn off the boiler's secondary sistems (like lighting, steam turbine cooling, etc...) i also put a sensor inside the boiler that detects if there is an overflow problem which shuts off the liquid vent to prevent further overflowing... Some not too complex automation. 👍🏻

    • @Magnet_MD
      @Magnet_MD  ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally! As long as you understand each part, putting a few parts together to get something complex isn't too bad.

    I can't believe i found the oni tutorial series i've been looking for all this time. You explain basics and then move on to complex examples, you steer away from exploits or you at least mark them, and you show the examples in action AND in a base, just A+ video, well done

    Great summary of things to do!
    Some things that may be handy to know:
    Most generators have a slider, that 'switches on their fuel demand' based on battery status. If you have a ton of coal generators (or anything that is manually fed!), it can be used to 'cascade' the generators. Like you set the first one to 55%, second to 50%, 45% and so on, evenly spaced out between like 60 - 10%.
    Now, have a battery that controls all of them, and its set to like 65-90% to switch the generators.
    If the battery enables the generators AND it does only drop slowly, only one generator will demand fuel and start to charge. Over some charge/discharge cycles, it will only fuel the generators that need to be running to keep the battery fed. (Works especially well if you have auto-sweepers feeding the generators!)
    This way you do not turn on the whole batch of like 20 generators if only 4-5 are needed. (It does not waste any fuel if you fuel all of them and turn them on for only 1 second only, but it feels better if they do not just flicker on/off to push the batteries up.)
    The slider can also be used as an automatic backup system. Have a few manual generators set to 5% around your base, and if your power grid fails and batteries get depleted it will call dupes to help out.
    A similar use case comes up if you have many large consumers on a big wire, you can enable generators based on consumption to smooth the battery level a bit.

    • @Magnet_MD
      @Magnet_MD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very good points! I'll usually add a pretty big buffer between when I'm asking generators to turn on, and when my batteries totally deplete. But yeah, using automation and those sliders, you can do a lot of elegant stuff!

    This is really useful, thanks. I started playing recently and with 2 worlds got to cycle 100 and reached a brick wall and couldn’t overcome it, and power usage was always the first thing to go wrong. I had no clue what I am doing (and still don’t, but that’s why I’m watching this) so never touched or even researched automation. Only 15 minutes in and finding loads of issues I had, especially with gas, solved relatively simply. I’m gonna give another world a try, so ty for the help :D

    Didn't know or maybe forgot that vents themselves could be automated to open and close. That's handy for a lot of things, such as keeping dupe eardrums from popping lol. Using just the first half of the video, one can set up a full HVAC system to keep the air inside the habitat germ-free pure oxygen at just the right temperature and pressure which I think should be the next objective after securing food, water, and power. With a good HVAC, you don't need to stress so much about creating perfect airlocks to the hazardous biomes or having to avoid taking flatulent dupes.

  • @lenderian
    @lenderian ปีที่แล้ว

    the memory gate is just a signal counter with a max count of 1 use it if it fits space needs better.
    also wattage sensors can be used to make a scaling powergrid instead of a storage power grid allowing you to run in time power demand using a single smart battery as a buffer and wattage usage to determine when extra engines turn on based on the grids usage this lets you blow a lot more power if you wanted to at the cost of very low tolerance to resource disruption since you would only have 20kj on reserve but you would be able to push a boat load of power assuming your resources were in order since you would have much more space for generators due to the lack of batteries

But for the eggs, themselves, my conclusion is that you simply drop them in the room above it and let them incubate on the floor ? then how do you automate the process for the grown critters to go the drowning room ? (but not the eggs yet).

    Isn't the Or-Gate an XOR-Gate?
    If you want "either or both", a regular wire does the trick. It will always be "off" unless at least one sensor in the system is telling it to be "on".
    Might be an important information for beginners.

    • @Magnet_MD
      @Magnet_MD  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think I've ever made an XOR gate in ONI, but the basic breakdown of XOR in general is that a green signal is sent if the two inputs are different. This is different from an OR gate because OR will still send green if both inputs are green, whereas XOR will not.
      I didn't mention the thing you're talking about (running a single wire through multiple inputs and getting the same effects as an OR gate), only because if you need a single input to trigger two different things (which is semi-common in a lot of setups), it can be confusing for players to deconstruct it and rebuild it correctly. I was considering mentioning it when I put this video together, but I figured there was already a ton of information already, and making an OR gate isn't very expensive (plus it's easier to read), so I just decided not to.

  • @legendarycheekymonkey

    Awesome as always. I've watched all your tutorials now and I feel much more prepared to tackle problems I've had in previous playthroughs. I'm still not totally sure how you seal off rooms forever and are just fine with that but I guess you know what you're doing! That base at the end made my eyebrows go up a couple of notches. I'm nowhere near that level, impressive stuff.

  • @Test-bi5rg
    @Test-bi5rg 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the tutorial. This game is quite challenging. I switched to the petroleum energy when my coal supply dropped below 2t. (cycle 70+) After that, I faced the oxygen problem and needed to switched to Electrolyzer. I barely finished the transition as the algae was less than 200kg. (cycle 90+) Since I reached maximum air pressure and my base was airlocked, I had to use two carbon skimmers (one inside the base, one outside. The outside air pressure also reached maximum) to get rid of the CO2. (cycle 110+) After that, I started to dig upward to space and maybe 30+ cycle later I found there were huge amount of hydrogen accumulated in the top of my base which prevented the growth of the meatwood. (And hydrogen all the way in the upward tunnel too.) This game really made me headache...

    • @Test-bi5rg
      @Test-bi5rg 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Update1: After trying several methods, I finally managed the H2 problem by building airlock doors on the farming region and using a gas pump and filter at the bottom of the base (near the electrolyzer) to pump O2 into the farming region. In that case, the H2 was pushed to the ceiling due to density and my plants would not be affected. Since 2H2O 2H2 + O2, if the base is completely sealed, the H2 will occupy 2/3 of the space. (In real world the gases just mix, but in ONI the H2 will occupy the upper 2/3 space of the base.) Therefore I continued to dig up to space to building a tunnel to release the gas. As I dug further, the base gradually filled with oxygen. Finally I stopped at just reaching the space and build an airlock door near it. Right now there won't be emergency issues for a while since my crude oil supply can last quite some time and my base sits above a steam geyser. I think it's time to deal with the power cable design. It seems this game uses the most vulnerable cable as reference to determine whether you reach the maximum wattage, and if overload happens, any portion connected to the same generator built by this cable can break, which doesn't make sense. (Imaging someone in your building tries to use 1 megawatt equipment, the cable that should break is the one in his room, not the one in your room. Hope this is easy to understand.) Another topic to deal with...

    Great video. I was just wondering, one of the first things I usually do after unlocking automation is set up a dupe sensor and a light above the research station and super computer to get the 15% speed increase, this has saved me a lot of time researching, but I haven't heard anyone talk about it. Is there any reason why I shouldn't do this?

    I've found the gas shutoff/element sensor to be quite... inaccurate, especially if you get blocking downstream, while the gas filter is flawless in its filtering. Having said that, there is a mod that'll reduce the required power for the filters. But great video!

      I don't have very specific use cases for a lot of the other things, so it's hard for me to put it into context. You can always play around with them in the sandbox in the meantime.

    are there any other survival/sim/colony games that use logic systems like this? I recently 100% ONI on steam and realized what made it so addictive was managing your resources and environment. It was like a puzzle in a puzzle that kept my interest for 700+ hours.

    Before I go on a binge, I have to ask.
    Do you have any videos on how to move exact measurements of liquids or gases?
    For example, I’m trying to move 19kg of Crude to a Nat Gas tank, but each packet of liquid travels at 10kg/s.
    Thanks!
    Edit: I think I have an idea! Hydrosensor under a liquid vent set to 19kg, and somewhere along the pipe is a reducer set to 1kg/s. Once the liquid vent closes, deconstruct/reroute the Crude somewhere else to deconstruct the vent without any unwanted liquids.
