    My mom knew Tonya Harding when she was 8-10 years old. They attended the same rink as kids, although a slight age difference meant that they were never in the same class. Apparently even back then, Tonya’s horrific home life was obvious to everybody, but no one did anything about it, and the cracks in her psyche were already starting to show. It makes me wonder what Tonya could have achieved had she had people who loved and cared for her. So sad.

      Oh yeah I think I've heard stories about that one. One guy was supposedly given alcohol instead of water the whole race. Many people went off track, some got lost and some straight cheated by catching a ride almost to the finish line. You are right this would be a great movie if written and directed well. I wouldn't even want to see big stars in the movie as the real people were random folks, not famous and just basically unknown to most. So it would be better to have actors most don't know to make the characters more believable. Someone should write a script and just friggin send it bud. Im sure there is a simple cheap way to prove the material to be yours before showing it to anyone. People be slimy it's sad first thing I think about another human doing is something bad. I do not know the veracity of that story regards the imbedded journo but know that the Spanish team were already under investigation before they were stripped of their gold some time after Sydney 2000 ended.
      I worked as an assistant to the Technical Director for the sport and saw most teams every day prior to and during competition began. Took me a while but I commented to the Director that for athletes with severe memory issues the Spanish team to a man always remembered my name and greeted me each day by name. At the time the Director said that should be impossible if they were correctly classified and he would launch an investigation into their classification. He stated some coaches of opponents had commented something was not right with the Spanish team but he took it as sour grapes at losing to them as none would officially lodge a complaint requiring investigation when he offered them the opportunity to do so.
      For the investigation to be completed they needed to personally interview every doctor the team used to classify their athletes so could not be completed before medals etc were awarded.

    You missed one of the most heart breaking unintentional "cheating" scandals in America. Jim Thorpe, a Native American, lost his medals in 1913 because he had once been paid a very paltry sum to play baseball between 1909 and 1910. He was only paid a few dollars, but that was enough for him to loose his metals. To further make the situation disgusting, it was his own American team (all white) who pushed for him to loose the metals. The "claimed" it was because you had to be able to prove you were absolutely an amateur. For goodness sake, the man took the money to keep from starving, the story goes.

      Jim Thorpe's family received his gold medals back in 1982, albeit replicas because the originals had been stolen, but he was deemed the co-champion with the original silver medalists. There have been efforts since then to have him restored as the sole champion, with 1964 Olympic gold medalist and Oglala Lakota Billy Mills helping to lead the effort. It's more of a tragedy than cheating.

      Carl Lewis, the Olympic 100 metre winner in the 1988 Seoul Olympics who was awarded the Olympic Gold Medal after Ben Johnson's disgrace, admitted that he too had taken performance enhancing drugs to improve his performance during the 1988 Olympics. He stated in an interview in 2003 that "hundreds" of US Olympic athletes who failed drug tests were still allowed to compete between 1988 and 2000.
      The American Olympic Committee was severely criticized by the International Olympic Committee, and the Olympic Committees of several foreign nations for allowing US Olympic Athletes to compete in Olympic events in spite of testing positive for anabolic steroids. There is overwhelming evidence that has emerged from 1987 to the present time that Florence Griffith Joyner, who set the world records in the 100 metre and 200 metre dashes also took banned Olympic substances to improve her athletic performances. The Olympic Gold Medals and world records of Carl Lewis and Florence Griffith Joyner should definitely be removed, deleted, and erased from IOC world records and world records times!!!

      @saintsone7877 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. You have to understand that athletes from poorer countries become national heroes for life if they get any medal let alone gold at an Olympics. And in blue ribbon events like 100m sprint a gold medal is instant multi-millionaire status in USA etc due to endorsements and the like. Unfortunately, that encourages cheating especially if it is state sponsored etc. As they say Ben Johnsons crime was he did not stop using the roids when the team doctor told him to(meaning the medical staff knew and possibly were supplying). Had he stopped when told he would have returned a clean sample and won gold.
      That was the difference between being a National hero or a National disgrace. One or two days too long using the roids.

      @@Hermioneswish Not necessarily. If you are experiencing nerves and your hand is shaking, beer can soothe your nerves and make your hand steadier than normally. When competing at the Olympics, it's a given that you are gonna feel anxious; by calming your nerves with a sedative agent (even if that's beer), you're getting an advantage over the rest of the athletes.
      And to answer your initial question, two beers don't make me see double; they only make me relax. I'm actually more chilled and self-controlled, as I'm normally an anxious person. I would have to drink at least 3 to feel tipsy.

    I was watching to see if they mentioned sprinter Crystal Cox, as that one personally broke my heart. I went to school with and was casual friends with her, and I can't overstate how incredible she was. She even competed in the Junior Olympics at that time. I moved away, and we lost touch, but I remember seeing pictures of her online, and my heart sank when I saw how drastically her physique changed. She was always incredibly fit, but she looked unnatural by then. Turns out I was on to something; she was found to have been doping for a while, and had to return her 2004 medals. She was a contestant with Survivor later, and went pretty far.

    • @Yomasi
      @Yomasi ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some fun facts about Crystal and Survivor:
      The season she appeared in, her team was THE worst team in the history of Survivor, a large part of it has to do with the fact they did not win a SINGLE elimination challenge
      Worst than that, in many situations where the team could be seen running or doing physical activities, she was by far the SLOWEST of the crew. The main reason why she wasn't down and out so quickly was because the entire team was constantly infighting and all the drama made some quite idiotic decisions when it came to elimination
      But even then you would think that Crystal, being an Olympic medalist, would have been at the very least ONE OF the most athletic person in the season... Not even close. She would often get eliminated from physical challenges quickly and couldn't keep up with the rest of her team, let alone the opponent. With hindsight it makes a lot of sense but considering the episode was shot and aired before it was revealed she cheated, this was a shock to many. You would reasonably think the Olympic medalist would have been KILLER in physical situations and, normally, that would be the case.
      It really speaks to how deep the effects of performance enhancing drugs had on her that she was basically the weakest link without them

      Badminton uses a swiss system in its earlier rounds.
