Watched an interview with Chris Jackson and he said it was emotional enough with George Washington's portrait right there and the timing of it being the end of Obama's second term but he said when Obama looked him in the eye and thanked him for teaching him how to say goodbye, Chris lost it and just dug his head into an ensemble member's shoulder for a few minutes until he could compose himself.

I watched an interview with Daveed Diggs (Jefferson/Lafayette) and he said that he worked with Lin before and was given a message from him saying something like "Im working on this play about the first secretary of Treasury wanna join" he said he thought it might sound boring but agreed but now he met the President and was nominated for an award
Daveed won a Tony for Hamilton.

I've listened to this song dozens of times for about 3 years and it is so powerful that it still hits as hard as it did when I heard it for the first time. Chis Jackson has the most incredible voice and we are so lucky to be able to hear him pour his heart out on these songs. I hope you guys react to the Disney+ Hamilton movie. I just saw it and it was amazing. Perfect for us folks who can't get to see it live but have fallen in love with the story and music.
I made sure I was alone when I watched the Hamilfilm because I was sure to br a mess. And then this part hit and I was struggling to catch my breath

I used to watch this on and off every few months, but I remember when I first saw it, it was after the election but before Obama passed the white house on to his successor and I hardcore BAWLED watching it. Everyone in that room knew the implications of those words and it was just flat-out impossible not to be moved by it. Thanks for letting me see other people as moved by this as I was!
I will say this. As an American, seeing this always gets me. I understand why we have term limits and why we have to have new presidents. But just like George Washington at the time, I know a lot of people weren't ready to say good-bye to Obama. Hell, if we knew then what would happen, the tears might have happened before the song. But all of this is part of the process. It's part of why our country can endure. I seriously believe had Washington stayed and died in office, we wouldn't have lasted long as a democracy and instead we would have fell apart right away.

The meaning of them performing this song was so emotional. Having a cast full of people of color perform this in front of the first black president at the end of his 2nd term... I still cry every time I see this performance.

They were already look like they’ve been bawling at the start of the video. I guess it took multiple takes. I would think first reaction would be best or at least wait until your eyes aren’t red and moist but what do I know.

I am glad I am not the only one that cries when I hear this. The emotion of Christopher Jackson not to mention that voice! The writing of LMM and that it was timed with Obama leaving. No matter what any one says about him he was a damn good president. That emotion you saw speaks testament to what Obama brought to this nation. I miss him as president everyday and I don't think I have still learned how to say goodbye!

Seeing this version again after Obama’s departure, seeing how graceful he was given who he was handing things off to…miss Obama so much.
I always wondered why only Obama and a few of the women in the audience physically vibe to the music, while almost all the men are just stone-faced or frozen (or in Timothy Geitner's case, randomly glancing at the camera or around the room). At first, I thought it was because it they didn't enjoy what they were watching, but after finally watching Hamilton myself and ALSO finding myself frozen at rapt attention, I understood why we reacted that way: we were simply doing everything in our power not to break into tears (or in Tim's case, searching for a camera so that he'll know which way not to look if he starts crying).
The parallels between George Washington & Obama were overwhelming! George as the first president and Obama as the first President of color made this hit extra-hard and poignant! 🥰🥰🥰😭😭😭

@@chileanyways-593 No it wasn't. They performed this almost a year before his last day in the White House. This is from March 2016, and he left on January 20 2017.
It wasn't his last day - it was about eleven months before his last day.
It was his final year, not his last day, but he and his staff and family and supporters were already coming to terms with the fact that his time was almost up. So this song hit a huge emotional punch at the time.

Not even talking from a political standpoint, and more on a personal/characteristic one ... could you even imagine something like this in today's White House? An evening celebrating the arts and culture, sophistication and the finer things in life? Under Trump? With him sitting there in awe and genuine admiration and appreciation for what happens on stage?
Chris Jackson could sing the ABC's and I'd still cry. I saw this and I legit bawled for 15 minutes. Man, I WISH both Daveed and Chris could've gotten that Tony because they both equally deserved it.

The fact that the whole cast sang this show at the white house for Obama is so historically meta it's actually insane.
This song perhaps most of all given the circumstances.
I think George Washington's portrait hangs in that room, too, so that is really cool.
Notice how Chris Jackson never looks directly towards Obama during the song - I think he knew it would make him lose it.
Putting it in the context of Obama's term coming to an end makes this even more poignant. I was in tears from the beginning for that alone, then Chris Jackson just knocks it out of the park. What a voice!
I can’t imagine what it’s like for a black man to watch a black man singing to a black president on his last day in office with such a powerful song. Even though we have miles and miles to go racially in this country I imagine it must have been a brief moment of catharsis to see some of the progress that’s been made.

I got so emotional the first time I saw this because it was at the end of President Obama's term and I knew we were getting that other guy. It two years before I could watch it without crying.
I cry every time I watch this. i looked up George Washington's final speech and this song was taken from this and a few things like the fig tree from another speech. Made it all real for me.

The moment that always amuses me in this is how the first person to his feet - the only one ahead of Obama - is Oskar Eustis (the white guy with the beard). You're not supposed to do that in the White House - the President should be the first to stand and the first to sit - but he knew what was coming...
He's the Artistic Director of the Public Theater, where Hamilton's Off-Broadway production appeared, so he's probably heard the song hundreds of times on stage, and so knew exactly when the ending was coming.
The American school system failed me. I have a question I really should know the answer to. I know that before Jefferson changed the law, the person to come in second in presidential elections became VP, but I was always taught that everyone just unanimously decided Washington should be president, whether he likes it or not, so I assumed that he never actually had to run for president, but if that is correct, how the hell did Adams become Washington's VP?
I think I read that Obama walked up to Washingtons Actor (Chris Jackson) and thanked him for teaching him how to say goodbye, and then Chris proceeded to cry on Alex Lacamoires shoulder for 45 minutes
