As far as I know, this was essentially the first time he performed anything from what would become Hamilton, and he does it at the White House in front of the president. I love how people start off laughing and thinking it's a joke and 5 minutes later, he had everyone in the room totally sold on the entire concept.
He wasn’t even planning on turning it into a musical at the time of this performance, he said he was doing a concept album. But HBO was at the White House and shot this video, it went viral, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Long before Hamilton, my kids first saw Lin-Manuel Miranda on a PBS kids show called "Electric Company", where he did songs like "Silent E is a Ninja" and " Hard and Soft G" about the letters and sounds they made. It was so memorable they can still sing them by memory.
OH MY GOD WAIT YES! Dude I’m 25 now and I just had flashbacks to being 12 in my moms shop watching electric company and cyber chase while doing homework
I love this performance because you can just see the fire and passion in him about this project that was only supposed to be a concept album but turned into an amazing musical. The Hamilton performances at the white house are also amazing and in those you can see his pride at how far the show has come and the success it found
I live in DC, and I remember the days following both this 2009 vid of Lin at the White House and the vid of 2016 One Last Time at the White House. Even though I'm someone who works outside of politics, stuff like this is our "nightly news." The videos from both performances were trending all over DC on the days after the White House released videos. I was an insta fan of Lin after seeing the video of the 2009 performance, and I sobbed when the White House posted the 2016 One Last Time performance. Because, while we can debate Barack's politics and some of the decisions he made as President, there is no question that DC adored the Obama family. It was really, really hard to see them go. For a variety of reasons, One Last Time is still probably my favorite song in the musical.
Love this video SO much! His confidence in his idea is just inspiring, and the fact that he just completely wins the audience over (from them chuckling somewhat at the idea, to giving him a standing ovation), is a thing of beauty. Also, the delivery is brilliant; to quote mr Boyd "Zero compaints!"
I live in DC, and the District was absolutely abuzz with talk of Lin Manuel Miranda the day after this event at the White House. This was the first "Poetry Jam" that the Obamas' held in his first year after Barack's election. The crowd was a mix of a variety of artists and politicians (and local students? I can't remember...) Even Spike Lee was there. Along with other poets and musicians, Lin had been invited to perform something from his breakthrough Broadway hit, In The Heights, which Michelle had seen and loved. And instead Lin gets up and starts talking about working on a Hip Hop concept album about Alexander Hamilton. You heard the room's reaction. When interviewed about it later...on why he thought to use this night and this audience as his sounding board for the concept, he basically laughed and said that if this group didn't get what he was trying to do and like it, no one would. Well...by the next day everyone in DC had seen the video when the White House released it. And everyone was obsessed. And the rest is history! The Obamas stayed in touch and came to see the show when it finally hit the stage 6 or so years later. I believe Michelle saw it Off Broadway as well as a couple of times on Broadway. And they were interviewed for some of the Hamilton documentaries. To top it off, they were asked to film an introduction for Hamilton to be aired for the Tonys. It felt like we had to wait forever between this night at the White House and the release of the album and the Off Broadway debut. But it's fun to be able to say that I've been a fan since 2009.
I bet I've played this 100 times since I first stumbled upon it. I knew I'd never get to see a performance (being disabled and in Michigan) so I signed up for Disney the minute they announced they'd be showing it, and I've watched the whole thing four or five times since. (Heh, I'd already read the book, but then I had to go back and re-read it) It's just my favorite thing since Book of Mormon (and that was a favorite too)
I don't know if the trip there would be any easier for you, but Hamilton is coming to Chicago next year. Depending on where you are in Michigan that might be a fair bit closer.
@@TheNeilBlack I'm in Ann Arbor, which is only an hour away from Detroit and I've seen several shows there, but the disability is relatively new and I haven't figured out how to navigate things like shows without inconveniencing a bunch of other people in the process. But most of the touring companies come through Detroit fairly quickly.
LMM is a legit rapper. and he's the first one to say he's not a good singer. Freestyle Love Supreme is an improve rap group. he's been rapping since middle school. watch some of his interviews abt his life n process, not just Hamilton. he's more of a rapper than a lot of self proclaimed rapper. as soon as he opens his mouth you recognize east coast like it's tattooed on his forehead. ps. I have seen him 7 times. 4 times on the A train and 3 times at Inwood Hill Park, cz we lived in adjacent neighborhoods.
You Tube has various videos of the day the Hamilton cast performed a selection of songs at the White House during Obama's last year in office (Hamilton came full circle). The most moving was Washington's farewell song "One Last Time". It paralleled Obama's imminent farewell from his time as President. Hard for the audience, cast, and viewer (me) not to get emotional. Cheers.
Everyone should see Hamilton onstage as well as the movie because the impact of the phenomenal casts around the country are breathtaking. Genius doesn't begin to describe the play and the performances. I'd love to see you react to the Broadway cast performing at the White House after the show moved to Broadway.
I have been dying for you to get into some Hamilton. I'd love to hear you do Guns and Ships, Satisfied and especially 10 Duel Commandments. I love hearing all the 90-00s hip hop influnces in this play, even Ja Rule's little growl in Helpless. Can't wait for more.
Truly one of the best cultural phenomenon in my lifetime. Not only getting musicals to be more mainstream, but throwing in some loose history, and great hip hop throughout.
Imagine being 1 of the people at that performance who were laughing at it, a couple years later pretending to all your friends that you were into this before it became famous.
Have you seen In the Heights? His first great piece! As a broadway purist I prefer the original cast recording to the film soundtrack, but they're both excellent! His writing is why he's a Pulitzer prize winner. He's incredible.
I first saw this recording in my American history class in college. Before it started, I was thinking.. what is this boring song going to be about.... Alexander Hamilton? How can that possibly be interesting or good? Well color me ignorant and wrong as can be because this performance rocked my world. I literally have showed this to about 50 or 60 people. I play this for every person that will listen that I come across, and their minds are blown as well. lin-manuel Miranda is brilliant.
This was absolutely the first time he performed this anywhere in public, and he has said multiple times if this material about Alexander Hamilton didn't work in THAT room he wouldn't have finished the play. Thank god it did!
I would watch the SHIT out of you going through some of the songs. Satisfied, My Shot, Ten Duel Commandments, Battle of York Town, allllll amazing and more
So glad you're familiar with Hamilton!! I have watched this clip and the ones after the show became a smash hit so many times and still smile at his short hair! The stage Hamilton is on is the same stage where I saw A Chorus Line 44 years ago and fell in love with musical theater. Hamilton's tribute to A Chorus Line is awesome to see!
This is great! I think seeing you react to something you know is powerful too. Because you know that line about to land and give the camera a little wink to clue us in. I was late to the Hamilton fan club but I'm here now!
Believe me I understand, I'm a history buff myself and I've gotten a lot has my son's friends and my friends into this just by being a butthead and saying "no you need to watch this" and every time they apologize for being so damn stubborn about not wanting to watch it because they loved it 🤣😂😅
So happy you finally watched Hamilton after being initially skeptical! Would have loved to see your reaction to it, but like you said, Disney doesn't respect fair use much.
1st performance of this song EVER!! It's a little bit different & he played it for a laugh. Notice how he said he was working on a hip hop album not a musical.
I love history, and hip-hop. I remember when they released this on Disney Plus. I refused to watch it because I wanted to see it in person first. The tour was in San Francisco in late August, and I cried. It was my husband's first Broadway Musical, but he loves that kind of stuff and is more into history than I am. It was the best play/musical I have ever seen. I actually watched it the next day on Disney when we got home from the city. And tbh, I'm glad I waited because for all of Lin's genius, I hate to say it, but he lacks in singing compared to the regular Broadway voice. And I'm not hating, I can't sing very well, but I'm not on Broadway. The guy who played Hamilton in the SF tour, was amazing, and it took me a while to get into the soundtrack because of Lin's voice. Now, that's what I associate Hamilton with, so it would be strange to hear someone else sing it, but that's why I wanted to see it live first. I didn't want it to not live up to what was on Disney. I made the right choice and now I still frequently listen to the soundtrack and I watch it every once in a while.
I have never wanted to meet a social media person before and have a conversation with them until I started to watch your reactions...stay awesome Dude!
I hate that the “cowardice and our shame” line got cut from the end of the song cause it’s such a good line but I get why it doesn’t fit well in the show.
This performance inspired me as a writer. The audience laughs at first but you can tell little by little he's captivating the crowd with his delivery, his presence, and his direct vision. To imagine this was possibly the earliest of his drafts and he's performing it in front of the President. People laugh because they can't see the vision but Lin can and that's all that matters.
They did a full album to the play. LMM got a song with Nas, Dave East and Aloe Blacc. Remix with Royce 5'9, Black Thought and Joyner Lucas.. He's brilliant!
I have watched Hamilton so many times I lost count. Can you imagine how much more successful education would be if teachers taught students with something they could relate to?? Music!!!
I would love to see your reaction to First Burn. Its the first version of Burn from Hamilton, but Lin thought it was too harsh for Eliza... as someone who went through something similar to Eliza, i think it was purfect.
I know I am a late-to-the-party comment, but have you reacted to "One Last Time" at the whitehouse? These two LMM performances bookend the Obama Whitehouse so beautifully together.
They have another performance from the white house from after the release that they do a bunch of songs. It's one of my favorite videos. I love Lin Manuel Miranda! Also check out his main songs from Mary Poppins returns. Trip a little Light Fantastic or Cover is not the Book.
They performed a number of songs in the White House at the end of the Obama term and those videos are freely available. I recommend you start with One Last Time. If you haven't seen it yet of course.
You should watch his directorial debut, Tick Tick Boom. Its an autobiographical musical written by Jonathan Larson who also wrote Rent. Just like Lin, Larson broke the mold of musical theatre. Unfortunately, he died before he could see how Rent changed the game.
This made me wonder if you would like Kate Tempest and you have videos for "Europe is Lost" and "People's Faces" already! Good stuff. I'm a third shift worker (Eastern time zone) so I am loving your upload times. :D
This was recorded by the White House and shouldn’t be controlled by Disney, so I wouldn’t expect there to be any copyright issues. There is another video from the White House performed shortly before President Obama left office. It includes most of the cast of Hamilton, but it’s done in this same room, I believe, so there is no scenery. President Obama asked them to perform it for a select group of people which included Ron Chernow, the author of the book Hamilton, on which the play is based. You probably know the story, but I love it so will tell it in case you don’t. Lin Manuel was on vacation on a break from his previous Tony winning play, In the Heights, and picked up Hamilton for a little ‘light reading’ (it’s about 800 pages of fairly small print). By the time Lin got to the second chapter he had begun researching who else had done a play or musical based on it, and was amazed to discover no one had. And he was already envisioning it as a hip hop piece. Lin is amazing! He is so creative. And you also know, I’m sure, that he won a Pulitzer for the screenplay.
As far as I know, this was essentially the first time he performed anything from what would become Hamilton, and he does it at the White House in front of the president. I love how people start off laughing and thinking it's a joke and 5 minutes later, he had everyone in the room totally sold on the entire concept.
I was telling my husband about this the other night. First they laughed, then they grooved.
It is a literal masterpiece.
He was invited because of "In The Heights", they thought he was going to sing something from it and after this he began thinking about doing a Mixtape
The sheer BALLS of debuting this in front of President Obama, in such an intimate setting. I guess he didn't throw away his shot.
It’s amazing to me that 7 years after this, the song was 99% the same in the final show.
True, but it did take him over a year to write that song.
He wasn’t even planning on turning it into a musical at the time of this performance, he said he was doing a concept album. But HBO was at the White House and shot this video, it went viral, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Lin Manuel is the genius composer of our generation. There's a reason the house of mouse keeps hiring him to write music for their biggest movies.
Lin Manuel Miranda is one of THE MOST talented people I have ever seen in my life.
And sooooo down to earth!
Long before Hamilton, my kids first saw Lin-Manuel Miranda on a PBS kids show called "Electric Company", where he did songs like "Silent E is a Ninja" and " Hard and Soft G" about the letters and sounds they made. It was so memorable they can still sing them by memory.

Lin Manuel Miranda is the embodiment of "This person is a National Treasure".
AbsoFuckinglutely
He belongs to the World, now... Greetings from Argentina ;)

The Hamilton performances at the white house are also amazing and in those you can see his pride at how far the show has come and the success it found
check out the Hamilton performance at the white house, especially "One Last Time", Obamas reaction is priceless
And it hits so hard when you read the date of that performance.
Yes! I'm here for all of this!
I have never been able to make it through that one without tearing up

Cabinet Battle is great too...
So glad you finally saw Hamilton! If someone loves any one of history, hip-hop, or even just musicals it's a total revelation.

I was blessed to see Hamilton in London last September and it was an experience I will never forget.
His ability with words is worthy of his Pulitzer. Genius and I’m stuck in awe.
In the movie "Ever After" the very last line is "the point gentlemen is, they lived". We tend to forget our historical figures were also people.
Lin Manuel Miranda is an absolutely amazing lyricist and composer.... absolutely wonderful.
I bet I've played this 100 times since I first stumbled upon it. The word play comes not just from hip hop, but also Lin’s love of Broadway greats like Sondheim and Jonathan Larson
LMM is a treasure. pure highbrow at its core.

Satisfied has the hardest bars on hamilton
This whole play is stuck in my head. I suggest watching Guns and ships, it's considered as one of the hardest verses in play because of it's speed
Your speaking voice is very calm and soothing
Two of my favorite songs from the musical "Hamilton" are MY SHOT and the temper tantrum song by King George III "You'll Be Back"
Truly one of the best cultural phenomenon in my lifetime. Not only getting musicals to be more mainstream, but throwing in some loose history, and great hip hop throughout.

I love how deep your voice is. You would make such a great voice character in a Disney film or an audio book.
We need a reaction to the entire play, song by song please.
Glad you reacted to this. I learned more from Hamilton than any history class I ever took. It speaks to emotions. It’s relatable.
Three words sir, "Gun and Ships". It's in this musical. you'll love it, along with the rest. I'd love to see more reactions to this
You need to check out the original group in Freestyle Love Supreme his rap battle group with founding members LMM, Chris Jackson and Daveed Diggs

It's AMAZING where this eventually ended up
From Hamilton: Yorktown gives me goosebumps, and Satisfied is just beautiful. How Far I'll Go from Moana is another favorite.
I absolutely love Lin Manuel Hernanda from his performance in his dark materials. I legit cried my eyes out at the end of season two.
I love how he changed the ending and added it to Guns and Ships lol

Have you experienced "In the Heights" yet? Absolutely brilliant
My favorite LMM trivia is that Immortal Technique was his bully in high school.
I would watch the SHIT out of you going through some of the songs. Satisfied, My Shot, Ten Duel Commandments, Battle of York Town, allllll amazing and more
My daughter and I saw Hamilton on her 15th birthday..one of the best things I've ever seen..(and I've seen prince like 6 or 7 times)
Anything Hamilton 😍 White House performances with the OG cast!
This makes my soul happy- as both a historian and a nerd.

There's a collection of animatics of the soundtrack out there that people seem to be able to do commentary on without getting pulled.

I absolutely love Hamilton. Such amazing talent
There are songs from it done for the Kennedy Center Honors - One Last Time, Battle of Yorktown and The Schuyler Sisters that don't get blocked.
I can't wait to see Hamilton twice the week after Christmas.
I hate that the “cowardice and our shame” line got cut from the end of the song cause it’s such a good line but I get why it doesn’t fit well in the show.
A beautiful piece of art was on full display at the White House. Feels unreal to think about.

I love this video. I saw it when it came out and was hyping it up forever and it was years before Hamilton came out.
You can check it out on the Disney channel if you have it it's a brilliant put together Broadway show. Lin-Manuel was a genius putting this together.
Lin Manuel Miranda is a prodigy! Loved your reaction! Good vibes from NYC!
I'm not into hip-hop, but Hamilton was so awesome to listen to and was an incredible experience.
Best bar= 10 dollar founding father without a father. 🤯🤯🤯
Lin made history out of history 😂
Lin Manuel Miranda is OUR Shakespeare.
I have watched Hamilton so many times I lost count. Can you imagine how much more successful education would be if teachers taught students with something they could relate to?? Music!!!
Research on Alexander Hamilton's role in the whiskey rebellion provides an unusual viewpoint on him.
One last time

From the Kennedy Center honors.
I would love to see your reaction to First Burn. Its the first version of Burn from Hamilton, but Lin thought it was too harsh for Eliza... as someone who went through something similar to Eliza, i think it was purfect.

So many suggestions. First burn and John ADAMS cut rap; his piece on Puerto Rico on the John Oliver show.
Len Manuel is gifted
They performed a number of songs in the White House at the end of the Obama term and those videos are freely available. I recommend you start with One Last Time. If you haven't seen it yet of course.
Definitely this!
worth the cost of disney+
My only complaint about Hamilton. It wasn't a thing when I was in highschool, 1974-1977. Sure LMM hadn't been born yet, but, still!
You have to watch Hamilton. It is sooooo good
This is before the Broadway show
You should watch his directorial debut, Tick Tick Boom. Its an autobiographical musical written by Jonathan Larson who also wrote Rent. Just like Lin, Larson broke the mold of musical theatre. Unfortunately, he died before he could see how Rent changed the game.

You’ll be back - Hamilton
If you enjoy Hamilton, you have to check out Weird Al's Hamilton Polka.
Raise a glass for freedom

The show is good asf
You should look into some tick tick Boom
check out 21 chump street that he did with NPR.
If you havent seen the musical Hamilton you need to. It is one of the best I have seen in my life.
