Thanks Jeff! AND( and I realized last night I don't think I've ever said this ) thank you Mrs. Jeff! No one keeps a channel going at this level without support on the home front. Plus, she buys you tools!
Thanks, Jeff! This is a great find. I almost pulled the trigger on the Olsa wrench. If Gearwrench also releases the same ratchet with a longer handle for extra leverage, I will definitely buy it too.
Hi Karai i always try to give as many options as i can for you guys!! i love tools and i love sharing that with you guys!! thanks for checking it out!!!
I just got the Astro wrench and a set of Astro sockets. The first thing I thought was I wish this would reverse. It isn’t perfect but it looks like it would work all you need it to do is hold well enough to get on and off the bolt or nut. On other thing I noticed when I went to Amazon is that this is the wrench that comes with Gearwrench,s pass through socket set. For $76 you get the same wrench and SAE and metric pass thru sockets
Wow, great job Jeff! I have had the Gearwrench pass thru socket set that this ratchet is made for as they use a completely different designed shape on the rear of their pass thru sockets. The shape is so different i would have thought the hexagonal shaped 17mm nano sockets would fit. Now that this works the pass thru extentions would work if one needed an extention in a particular situation. For example, replacing struts on a ford F150 when you need to something like a pass thru to tighten the top nut and you need to hold the stem of the strut piston so to doesnt move.
Great video Jeff. This goodwrench is the best pass through ratchet hands down. I like it better than my Astro altho the Astro clicks better to th socket, and my Pittsburgh.
I replaced the timing belt in a 96 Rav4. Needed a pass-thru socket set! Just went to HF to get a Pittsburgh. They do have their place. I have only used it a couple of times but it is handy. I am just a home-jobber and not a professional.
...never worked on VW (Mk3-Mk4) front strut top nuts. One must hold the strut shaft w/a hex key while you loosen/tighten the two top nuts. Could also be on more VW/Audi models too
@jefftovani5535 Sorry, I typed too fast while making breakfast. I hope they make one in the future for 1/2 version. Like the quinn sockets. Always great content 👌
Hi Euph, I picked up a Gearwrench 22mm long double box flex head to use with my Quinns. It works great with the standard box end for high torque applications. Just wished it had the retaining ring.
@MrEuph714 somehow the important info in my mind didn't make it in my post. That Gearwrench is the long pattern dbl box. There are many brands, but I was able to it at a reasonable price on ebay. Which is an awesome place to pick up tools for a bargain price, as long as your diligent with keeping up with tool prices and very patient.
Nice! I’ve got this (non-flex version) as part of the Gearwrench pass through set…now, we just need this in a size to fit the 1/2” nano sockets (22mm).
Now, we'll complain that there's no unlocked position LOL the Nano sockets aren't really pass thru sockets as you're limited on one side by the socket size and 3/8 drive square hole on the other side, That ratchet was made for Gearwrench's pass through sockets and works with their magnetic drain plug sockets. Kobalt also made a similar ratchet back in the day. The Gearwrench pass through ratchet isn't perfect for Nano sockets but, it's better than trying to use a plain 17mm wrench without a retaining ring. Astro didn't incorporate a reverse switch or locking flex head feature because, those items are patented by someone else.
Hi Fedwrench yea its just a option!! and yes its made for there magnetic oil plug socket set, which i also own!!! the set only had a 10 inch long ratchet so this 12 inch flex-head will be great for that as well!!! thanks for joining in!!!
I was never a fan of the pass through socket sets. I bought a craftsman set once at a yard sale for 5 bucks and sold it for a crazy amount of money to recoup some of the money I spent that day. So that tells me they’re a popular item. Thanks

I was sure this was going to be a VIM review. I was under the impression they made a nano ratchet wrench, but I was wrong. They make a set of double box reserable flexhead ratcheting wrenches that have retaining rings. JDTCo is selling a set of 1/4" Astro nano sockets with the VIM 11mm flexhead wrench. I'm liking this wrench a lot, but I think it may have been first created for use with their oil change sockets. The ratchet wrench that comes in that set seems a bit short and non-flex head. It just happened to also be a good fit for the 3/8" nano sockets. Thanks for the video Jeff, I didn't remember this wrench although I had seen it somewhere before, but not in this use.
That Gearwrench would work great in my opinion. For better socket retention check out the L35 In Colorado TH-cam channel. She did an in depth video on methods for retaining nano sockets in regular ratcheting wrenches that don't have a built in retaining ring. My Snap-on nano sockets have O-rings for socket retention that allows them to be used with any kind of wrench. The only downfall is that the O-rings wear. Some of the O-rings are dry rotting. I just replace them as needed. Unfortunately that particular Gearwrench isn't compatible as the hex on my Snap-on sockets is 5/8" or 16mm. I've been looking at various 5/8 ratcheting wrenches that I can use for extended reach situations. Thank you as always Jeff for your efforts in finding unique tools! Hope you are enjoying yourself on this Labor Day holiday!
There is also a Makita version of this ratchet. I'm not sure if it has the locking ring. It's also more expensive than the Gearwrench version. I need to get one of these, because I have the Gearwrench serpentine kit and it includes a non-flex wrench with low-profile sockets and this would be a great addition to the set and also work with the Nanos!
hey Jeff, you should do a show that compares all of the low pro impact sockets that will fit in a 17mm ratcheting wrench. a lot of companies make low profile impact sockets. However, off the top of my head only Astro, Olsa, Quinn, and maybe husky ( maybe there’s more) are made to fit inside a ratcheting ratchet. it would be interesting to compare the Oal and other specs of all the compact sockets.
Nice! Can you put the caliper on all 3 brands and measure the stack height, when there’s a socket attached? Looks like the Gearwrench doesn’t seat the sockets flush. Thanks!
Absolutely freaking amazing!!! You, sir, are a genius, Jeff. I'm definitely purchasing this ratchet immediately!! It's not too often that someone figures these types of things out before me lol. I wonder if the 1/4" version of this pass through rarchet would work on the new 1/4" nano socket set 🤔
Hi Victor the ratchet doesnt hold as good as the Astro ratchet!! and these were Olsas version of the nano sockets!! but that being said it holds the smaller sockets good enough i think!! being locking, and reverse lever it might be a decent option!! just my opinion!! thanks my friend!

Love this question! ♥️ Back-drag is a pet peeve of mine. I really thought less teeth would equal less drag but obviously not in this case. Ko-ken offers the least Back-drag is a regular socket. I'm gonna have to go see if they have a pass through that might work for this application 🤔
I've wanted a set of the Astro for a while now. I'd like to get them in all 3 drive sizes, but it's hard to find them in 1/4 drive. I found one set a while back, but it seems they have a very hard time keeping them in stock. Right now, I'm focused on expanding my 1/4 and 3/8 stuff a little at a time.
Great review Jeff , maybe they hold better if you plug them in the other side 😊 you would think GEARWRENCH WOULD HAVE done their homework before releasing something that fails for what they were meant to do , it shows lack of quality, Thanks Jeff
Hi tank this ratchet was designed for GW go through sockets!! and magnetic oil drain plug sockets!! i just wanted to see if it would work with the nano sockets!!! im always looking for options!!
I use the USAG U02856017-285 KA but it's not flex head. But it's a nice offset reversible wrench with the retainer ring. But thank you for this one. I'll pick it up for sure.
Hello again, Jeff Thank you for another Great Video 👍 I enjoyed watching tonight's video. Question for you. From tonight's video there isn't a ratchet for holding the Nano sockets? And the Gearwrench is closest tool to hold sockets under 21mm? Again thank you 👌
I use that Gearwrench locking flex head. I use the UltraSteel 1/4 Inch Drive To 3/8 Inch Socket Adapter Set - UC1202TA from O'reilly's to hold in the heavier sockets. It adds a little more than an 1/8 to the overall thickness, but works very well.
This is great! I've been meaning to snag one of these mini socket sets up. If I remember correctly, you're sponsored by olsa tools. Do you happen to have an affiliate link I can use so you get a little something too?
Hi abw these were Olsa low profile, ill will try some other brands like Astro in the near future!! i currently dont own Astro yet!! thanks for taking a gander!!
@@jefftovani5535I just ordered this Gearwrench pass thru wrench. Even my Astro version pass thru is loosing sockets? The sockets work great but the locking ring on the ratchet may be the weak link? Keep up the content!
Hi Jeff, Just found your channel and already watched a bunch of your videos - awesome content! Regarding the current video - what's the advantage of this vs using these stubby sockets on a regular ratchet? I assume you get lower profile? If yes, how much?
Yes much lower profile,up to a 1/2 less hight,or width depending how you looking at it!! that a big difference somtimes!!! when your in tight spot!! thanks my friend for supporting the channel!!!
I'm looking for that exact combination in a box end ratchet for a regular metric flex head box end wrench set and can't seem to find it! Either the flex head doesn't lock and does have the reverse lever, or it does have the reverse lever and doesn't lock. Never seen an all in one as a wrench set.
Boy thats a tuff one!! i dont think i ever saw a set thats has all those features!! i did a series on that!! the Tone set flexed, had a reverse lever, but no lock!!!ill keep looking!! thanks wiedapp!!
@@jefftovani5535 Finally I stumbled upon something (eventually the search algorithm might have catched up, I think): VIM DDF100a. But after shipping and import duties to my country in Europe they are so unattractive to buy for me, I will continue to wait for something similar from Asia and what our local rebrands make of it. One of them would only need to 'marry' two of their product lines and that would be a straight up copy of that VIM set. It's not like I need to earn money with it and use it every day, so I can't rectify spending that amount of money.
I wouldn't want the locking flex. A lot of times when using something like that your fishing the socket on the the fastener and locking the flex would just make it harder to fish.
They don't hold because they're not the right end. I'd much rather deal with being non reversible and non locking than willingly give Gearwrench my money, screw Apex tool group.

I found one set a while back, but it seems they have a very hard time keeping them in stock. Right now, I'm focused on expanding my 1/4 and 3/8 stuff a little at a time.
Hi shadow yea Astri stuff is always on back order it seems!!! thanks shadow!!!
I don’t trust Gearwrench quality. Thank you for this video. I’m going to order the Astro Set from JDTCO. Very nice shop & beautiful beautiful Tool box
The Astri fits great scott!! thanks for checking in!!
I wonder if this works with most pass-thru designs.
Yea im not sure!! thanks for joining in!!
Hi Madjikman it another option,is it perfect fit no,but it should be good enough!!!thanks my friend!!!
Hello again, Jeff
Thank you for another Great Video 👍 I enjoyed watching tonight's video. Question for you. From tonight's video there isn't a ratchet for holding the Nano sockets? And the Gearwrench is closest tool to hold sockets under 21mm? Again thank you 👌
All 3 ratchets i showed should all work with Astros Nano sockets as well!!! thanks george!!!
Thank you sjagain for sharing that info!! stay tuned!!
Yea, you got found out, trying to pretend you still had a 10mm!
Well done Gear Wrench, that is what we wanted
Thanks harvey for checking in!!!
This is great! I've been meaning to snag one of these mini socket sets up. If I remember correctly, you're sponsored by olsa tools. Do you happen to have an affiliate link I can use so you get a little something too?
Hi mi friend i just put a link in the video to OLSA website ,it has the discount built in!! thanks for supporting the channel!!
@@jefftovani5535 Thank you! Not a bad deal at all!!!
But will it hold the Astro nano sockets? I ask since there is a size difference in the sockets where the c clip locks the socket into ratchet?
Hi abw these were Olsa low profile, ill will try some other brands like Astro in the near future!! i currently dont own Astro yet!! thanks for taking a gander!!
@@jefftovani5535I just ordered this Gearwrench pass thru wrench. Even my Astro version pass thru is loosing sockets? The sockets work great but the locking ring on the ratchet may be the weak link? Keep up the content!
Cool
Thank you wtbm!!!
Anyone else wanna hear the Chavelle ?
Will do a start up soon!! thanks todd!!!
@@jefftovani5535 very cool !!
Looking for something like this. Is there any lash since it's not an actual 17mm wrench.? Has there been any wear from the loose fit?
Hi barry its been holding up good,it wasnt specificly made for nano sockets, its a loose fit,but it works!!
Hi Jeff,
Just found your channel and already watched a bunch of your videos - awesome content!
I don't know if you have the socket for the gear wrench and how much bigger than the astro
The sockets for the GW are pass through sockets, there not impact or real low profile i believe!!
I’ve had horrible luck with the Gearwrench reversible ratchet wrenches
I heard they can be hit and miss! thanks dan for joining in!!!
Game changer
Sure is rob,thank you!!
Olsas in the house..
Thanks ringo for checking in!!!
I wouldn't want the locking flex. A lot of times when using something like that your fishing the socket on the the fastener and locking the flex would just make it harder to fish.
Hi Papa thats a valid point!!
They don't hold because they're not the right end. I'd much rather deal with being non reversible and non locking than willingly give Gearwrench my money, screw Apex tool group.
Yes i know the wrench is made for GW magnetic oil plug sockets and go through sockets!! i own the GW magnetic oil plug socket set with the 10inch ratchet!! just trying to give people options!! i never said this is perfect fit or option!! you hate appex tools, thats ok,we all have are own opinions about what we like and dont like!! thanks for watching!!
As soon as I saw them on your channel I knew I had to get one but which one do you recommend?
Gearwrench 893800 £44
Gearwrench 891400 £40
Astro 783105 £32
Hi tom the Astro holds the socket the best!! the GW ok in the smaller sockets!! if i had one i probably goe with Astro!! just trying to show as many options as i can!!
@@jefftovani5535 yeah I had the astro in my basket because it looked the nicest to me. I will pull the trigger on it now. But I can see the reverse lever coming in handy on the Gearwrench
please gift me matco ratchet jeff :)
Stay tuned for fridays drawing, good luck!!!
First?
Your awesome my friend!!!
