  • I bought a cheap but really highly rated 5" vise from Amazon to replace the tiny one I bought from Harbor Freight. This is a remove and replace of my old vice and some info on why it failed. My workbench really sucks still though.

lol, so this isn't super clear in the video because in my head these videos are strung together sequentially and I've gotten a few comments about it. I didn't replace the vise explicitly because the short fasteners failed but rather because I needed to fit a rear diff carrier in the vise to torque the ring gear bolts and my old vise was too small, see timestamp 11:44 if you abandoned it early. I thought it was funny at the time but I can see that it definitely wouldn't make sense to folks stumbling on this. 🤷My bad!✌

Bolts pulled through the cheap plywood and now you need a new vise lmfao.

It was clearly damaged beyond repair

Which part of the bench vise do you measure 5 inches? Also, is 5 inch good for most small time Diyers?

Great questions! I'm fairly certain the 5" refers to the fully opened distance of the jaws. I consider myself a small time DIYer and I will say that after having it for a bit I think it's a perfect size for the price range _for me_. I got away with a 3.5"-ish vise for a very long time. Most everything I do with a vise uses maybe 1-2" of jaw travel max but having the extra has been great. In addition to that rear diff carrier, the extra jaw opening depth came in handy setting some bushings into place, ie. being able to fit some flat stock between the piece and the jaws to ensure a flat press. But that's all from an automotive POV, there's tons of other uses. So yes, if you have the space/money/need, I'd say 5" vises are great for a small time DIYer.

I have the Irwin the same thing just marketed under another name. I’m having trouble with the swivel base. Could you show how your model looks on the inside I can’t get mine to work correctly. It feels like it’s jammed or improperly set. Love your content best wishes with the project.

Hey bud, I took it apart today and filmed it for my next video. I'll get some stills and upload them to imgur later today. I do have to loosen mine almost completely before it'll turn very well. Feels a little jammed as well but does eventually turn. The metal on the base didn't seem like the greatest so I don't want to force it much.

Looks like I paid $125.99 but it's even cheaper right now. Amazon has a lightning deal on it at the moment.

So you bought a new vice because the fasteners that hold it to the bench failed? Whatever you need to convince your wife to let you buy new tools
