- German Shorthaired Pointers are quickly gaining in popularity as companion animals, adventure buddies, and family dogs. We get tons of emails each week from people wanting to know our opinions on whether or not the GSP is a suitable fit for their particular situation. Welcome to the German Shorthair Pointer (GSP) Breed. The GSP was developed in Germany in the late 1800's to be an all-purpose dog. It was the original intent of the breeders to develop a breed of dog with inbred instinct for multiple tasks, thus requiring little time to "force train". The GSP was bred to point, retrieve, trail wounded game, hunt both large and small game, furred and feathered and to work in low or heavy cover as well as water. The dog was also intended to be a family companion good with both adults and children.
The breed is considered medium in size with the males slightly larger than the females. One should be able to determine the sex of the dog based on general appearance, i.e. males should look masculine and females should look feminine. A fairly healthy breed but the first time buyer should always inquire about health clearances of the sire and dam when looking for a puppy. Breeders should have no problem discussing or answering any health issues being asked. The following are considered as a minimum to ask about: OFA or PennHip - hip dysplasia; Cardiac-echocardiogram for congenital cardiac; CERF - current eye clearance of PRA done each year until age 6 every two years afterward; CD - DNA test for carrier status for cone degeneration (may be cleared by both Parents DNA test indicating "normal" a non-carrier.) It is important to remember this is primarily a hunting dog, bred for a purpose, and as such will have a high level of activity and/or energy that needs to be channeled. Just like people not all are created equal and while some will learn a task quickly others may take more time and patience. GSPs tend to be eager to please and willing to learn at relatively young ages if the training sessions are not forced and kept short and simple. Even though some may appear physically mature by the time they are six months old their brain may not be engaged until they reach two years of age. Thus you may have an adult size dog with a "teenage" brain.
The coat of a GSP is short but not thin and when one runs their hand across a dog the hair should not feel soft to the touch with exception of the hair found on the head and ears. The GSP head is shaped differently than that found on a Lab or Pointer and its ear is slightly larger and longer, not pointed at the end but slightly rounded. To prevent field injuries the tail is docked, not short like a Boxer or Doberman but should be at least 6 to 8 inches long with some a bit longer and with dewclaws removed. Often confused by some as a Dalmatian because some of the coat patterns of the GSP are bright white with small markings referred to as "ticking" or with Labs because of the solid liver or black versions. Yet if compared side by side it would be readily apparent that none of them look alike.

First time GSP owner.....This video just made my life so much easier. He's not pulling on the leash and I'm not pulling on him when he stops and sniffs. Found out he never goes more than 10-20 yards away from me anyway. Thank you, I love your energy I'm learning a lot!
They’re supposed to roam pretty far
I got a GSP when i turned 16, and had him for a solid 16 years. Absolutely amazing and loving dog, but BOY was I not ready for that level of energy! Most hyperactive dog I've ever seen. Once I realized I had to exercise him for hours and hours every day, and throw a ball until my arm fell off, we started having an amazing life together. He was my hiking and backpacking companion too, and Absolutely loved it.
Man, I miss that dog; he was my life companion for so long, I still tear up whenever I see a GSP. Thanks for the overview and highlight of the best dog I've ever had.
I just rescued a GSP mix last month from my local animal shelter. I had no idea he was a GSP really. I just loved his look and had been wanting a lovable dog to go hiking with. I love the outdoors (hunting fishing). I’ve been taking him on 3-5 mile hikes as many days as I can. I’ve had sooo many times I got frustrated with some of his behaviors but now I truly understand the dog. He goes off leash with me now with a E-collar as long as we’re alone. I’ve had him chase after whitetails and birds in the tall grass in the open fields. He’s always running 100mph. He’ll crash in the creek bottoms and bounce off trail when he catches a sniff of something. Up until this point I’d be very strict with him but now I get it and let him be himself as much as possible. I love the dog and the bond we’re creating with one another.

Fabulous to watch, thanks Stonnie. In 1998, I found two GSPs in a rescue home, in the UK. I was a GSP Virgin, though a country girl. Bracken was the boy of 26 months and Holly, girl of 14 months. Abandoned together by a working couple who had no time for them, the dogs were taking the wallpaper down in their house. The couple had multiple fights and left the dogs, arguing about who actually took care of them, and the next door neighbour brought them to the rescue home. Lots of problems for me because the dogs had not had any formative training, except giving a paw. We had a very active outdoor life with them every day, outdoors for up to five hours at a time. But no-one to teach me all the things you talk about, all the HPR. No internet then either. The dogs taught me that they were not lost, it was my fault for not staying where they last saw me and/or not maintaining contact, as you do with the whistle. Outreach is hard to learn. Am laughing a little bit, because you are walking around the fields, crops, just as we did in the UK. Looks just the same, with hedgerows alongside the field. Every day with Holly & Bracken was a blessing, a challenge, an adventure, and I believe I gave them both a life they needed and deserved. I still miss them.

I always had weimaraners, which share a lot in common with the GSP. I always let mine free roam/run everyday out in the wilderness/trails. They never got too far from me. Always checking in to see where I was, and every 2 minutes coming running back to me on their own. Their natural "neediness or separation anxiety" always has them coming back and checking in. I absolutely love the pointer breeds.
So exciting to be 3 hours away and see our 4 month old black lab, Bella Blue, in the beginning of this video... Bella is not the one with the white spot on its chest or the one with the collar but the pup that only been there since Thursday and we know she is in the best environment to become a terrific well trained family member …thanks Stonnie, Eli, AMY & George all all the other dog lovers🐕👏

Osage Orange. We found them while pheasant hunting in Iowa. I believe they used to plant it for natural fences. “Horse high, hog tight and bull strong” was what one site said about it.

We had a GSP and she was so well trained. Always ready to listen and insanely focused. She needed a lot of room to roam, though.
multiple solid points. from someone who has a 2year old male. I live in the suburbs and am more active than most people. I do take him hunting when i can he loves every bit of it. But when i cant i personally take him out on running trails in the woods or hiking trails and let him roam and run and dart back and forth. he will catch scent and go off but i have never questioned whether he was coming back or not. If this happens to you as an owner. DONT FREAK OUT! trust me stay in the general area they last saw you in and wait...call their name...blow a whistle (highly suggested) they will come back. I think the longest i ever lost my guy for was maybe 3-5 min. When he ran back he had a piece of deer hide in his mouth *eye roll* they're amazing dogs.

I got mine for free at 8wks old. Inbred but healthy and smart. It was a learning curve, he's 3 now and just got him to quit killing my wife's chickens. His favorite game is jeepaway with his stuffed and rope toys. He's the best dog I've ever had. He listens well and stays in the yard. He only roamed when our old GSD would break out.

I had a large Munsterlander which was hit point retrieve. He was always in front by 50 metres, just exploring everything. And he loved to play ball. And he even brought it back! 🤣

I loved my GSP's -you have to expect a "athletic and high energy" for sure. The dogs were wonderful with the kids. training and exercise - fun - exercise. we changed over to black labs when my youngest was 4 and our last GPS passed. I still can't miss an opportunity to say hello to a GPS I meet. My uncles dog Cleo would keep running in the field and didn't know when to stop - my uncle had to check her pads because she would keep going past what was good for her.

I love this, especially the quick recharge. I would take my 2 gsps for couple hour hike, off Leah in a safe area, and they would be satisfied and recharge on the drive home. I would be ready for a nap, and a 2o min drive home would recharge them.

I got a puppy 4 weeks ago. Mother is a Great Pyrenees. Father is a rolling stone. ;-) But, after much searching, it has become clear that the father was a German Shorthaired Pointer (blue). He's been training well, but now that I've watched your video, it will go even better. Again, many thanks!

I watch your videos to learn. However, tonight the video brought back a flood of memories. I had a GSP that was my hunting partner for 17yrs. From the time he was about 12wks, I taught him to quarter fields, always within shotgun range - in our area it seems the quail didn’t read the book and know they were supposed to hold for the point. He was the best pointing dog I’ve ever seen.
FWIW, as per your videos, I now have an English Lab. Unlike my high energy GSP she is quite content to sit in a blind waiting for ducks to come to us. For a person well past his prime she is the perfect house dog and occasional hunter.
One last thing, you saved me a lot of grief with your Malinois video. I had thought of getting one for the ranch, but you convinced me it’d never work out for me or the dog.

This was a really great video. You showed some good training, you had the dogs in a large variety of environments, you gave some really great advice about the importance of socialization to environments as well as people and animals, and your breed review was one of the most accurate I have seen. Yes, they are good tempered, attractive, athletic, delightful animals, but just as you said, the requirements for exercise are very easy to underestimate. But we are out with our gsp for about 2 hours, rain or shine.
The other point I would add is that it is so rewarding to see how much the gsp loves exploring open terrain that it seems to triple the pleasure of hiking anywhere and I usually feel completely elated on the drives home.
I'm so glad I got a GSP. From 8 weeks old I said this dog acts like a little wolf puppy! She walks like one, plays like one, hunts like a machine, and bites like one! Those teeth are razors. ANyway I agree, taking my dog to a field gives both of us a lot of pleasure. You can see how much they love it in the way they move through an open field.

Our GSP Eva made it to 17 years old, She was the best pheasant and mountain quail dog we've ever had, she did everything, point, flush and retrieve. Great family dog too! Got Labs now I'm almost ready for another GSP here soon.

Love them! Have a GSP and a Weimaraner. Few things are better than going on a hike with two pointers and watching them explore. Absolutely love them!
I've always had labs. When my dog, Hank, was 6 months old I took him to the lake, let him loose and he dove in (legs tucked!) and started swimming. Never had such a natural swimmer. I like taking him when I do desert lake camping which mostly involves jet propelled watercraft of the fast variety. A few times when he was younger I had to turn back and scoop him out of the water 50+ yards out because he decided to follow me. Never really an emergency. I would see him and stop and idle back and let him run out of steam a little before I grab him. Always too tired to try it again 😂
Wow! I am laughing out loud right now. What beautiful dogs. Our dog, Duggie, is a big, black guy. mostly GSP. Your BBD's look just like him! Your other breeds are so well groomed and beautiful.
Still going through this video, we had one growing up as kids this dog is amazing. I remember siblings as children throwing sand in its face and this dog just took it, no aggression. I witnessed it attack a bull terrier in the 80s when in came into our yard. Beautiful family dog, very loyal. Love them
Thank you for being such an honest and direct trainer. I just put my 14 yo GSP to rest and am thinking about getting another even though I'll be 60 next year. I miss her dearly and never had a better exercise and home campanion.

Really? I have lots of parks near me and plan to exercise it a lot. But worried about the times I have to leave it home. You think they can be lazy at home and handle a few hours a day , even alone?

Yes getting a gsp is a commitment to field time everyday.. here is an old video of 10 years ago, catching the last bit of daylight (at 4 pm) 10 degrees outside... letting the shorthairs run..
my pointer and i would hike 2.5 miles in the desert every day. she would run off and always come back then one day she didn't come back. I yelled for her, and ran back to the house to get my quad to go search for her. When I got to the house she was sitting by the front door. I guess she was done hiking that day.

Love GSPs! My husband grew up hunting and fishing and I love the personality and goofiness (and the good looks!). We have 2 kinds of ambulatory outings: walks around the neighborhood and tromps. Tromps are those fun crazy outings out in the field. How can you resist taking a dog like that out on an adventure? That’s for the great info. Those loyal, smart beasts are easy to train and great to have in the family. When my kids were toddlers roughhousing with Hannah and getting knocked down was part of the fun. Not all kids are used to that. Thanks for the great video!
Excellent training video, when I got into training as a kid, my godfather have me the best advice for training any dog. "A tired dog is a good dog." pretty sure what you had in your hand is what we call a buckeye(chestnut), the green part eventually comes off.
I had a German short haired pointer for about 6 years and we had to rehome him for a couple different reasons but I wish we never did. It was my parents decision. He was a great dog he just loved running our neighborhood. and we were worried he would get ran over. He needed land to run on. We had him since he was 8 weeks old up to 6 years old and we kept in contact with the people we rehomed him to and got news he passed away at 9 years old. He had heart worms. No one saw it coming he was up running all happy the day before. But now my parents are in a better place in life my dad now has 32 acres and we are searching for our new German short haired family member. I love the breed I’m super excited to welcome a new member!
I had a GSP, lab and malamute mix. Best dog ever. Very gentle, mild mannered, smart, and loving.

Hi Stonnie, Thanks so much for another great video! I really enjoyed this video. My GSP girl Lilly is just over a year old. She is a hunter through and through. Can run for hours. Chased a jackal into the mountains the other day, when we took her out to the farm. Staying in Namibia, we have a severe drought right now, so our dams are all empty. Cannot wait for rain to fall, so that the dams can fill up, and the dogs can enjoy swimming again.

Diehard GSP fan, my two are 14 and 13, just bought 20 acre upstate SC farm for my three horses. The three of us are ecstatic. We are outside for hours, happy tired too. Great video , love your expertise, honesty and sense of humor.

Now I’ve had her for two years and I swear I’ve found my spirit animal, soulmate and my breed for life. Affectionate, smart, hyper focused, goofy, easily trainable and obedient.
17:55 is such an important point, my friends dad had a young visla around 8 months, and just a couple months back they were out in their local park playing fetch offlead when he got spooked by a couple of people in costumes. Unfortunately within seconds he ended up out in the road with cars going 40mph and he did not survive the injuries sustained.

I have a few GSP and they all jump over my lab everyday like it’s part of the program ! Lol.
I found out that I adopted a short haired German pointer from the humane society earlier this year after I signed and paid for his adoption. At least that’s what the humane society thinks his breed is. I thought he was handsome when I saw him in the kennel and that’s what attracted me to him. They estimated his age to be around 2 years old or so when I adopted him. Everything you said about GSPs is true. He is high energy, strong, has that hunting instinct, stubborn, playful, attention seeker and a love bug. I love him to death!! Thank you for your information!
Just found this channel and couldn't agree any more. This is how I trained my dog and he is such a good labrador. When we first got him we were living in California and I'd take him on hikes and started socializing at 2 months. My vet thought I was crazy but fast forward a few years and he is now able to jump up rocks taller than me where others have to pick up their dog to get them over rocks knee high. Teach them basics and manner and let your dog be a dog.
I can basicall say the same about my Labbie, she is super fast and agile for a 40kg dog, and no she is not fat, just bigger structured otherwise has very little fat and she is super muscular. Im in the process of breeding her with a GSP right now ( i was in the process of breeding her with an Aussie actually but he had much trouble performing so thankfully the universe stepped in and sent that GSP to us again tonight and he handled his business like the true champ that he is, they were stuck for half an hour after, the universes way of teaching me what to do and how to do it properly i guess) and cannot wait to see the pups, she is gonna be a great mom since she is very gentle and perceptive and has a ton of empathy, she acts completely differently around seniors and children than she does around me and other owners of the dogs she usually plays with, she has a natural understanding that not everyone can handle playing with her 100% and she has a criteria that goes somewhat like this, 5% power when playing with children under 10 and senior women (my mom for example), 15 % when playing with children 10-13 and smaller dogs, 25% for senior men and medium or older dogs, then its about 50% with people she considers strong enough, and then there is the 75-100% depending on the dog she is playing with, and 110% when playing with me (once i was playing with her at a park and 2 guys came by to see if i need help to get the dog thats attacking me to leave me be, had quite a laugh before i explained to them she is my dog and thats just the way she is with me, we met after a few days, i was with a friend and his children , 4 yo girl and 6yo boy and the same 2 guys come by and saw her playing with the kids in a completely different way and couldnt believe their eyes, she basically lets them chase her and if they catch her she lets them do just about anything to her, she lets herself get caught alot since she loves the cuddles she gets when they catch her, while with me is just dog flying everywhere barking growling hanging off my arm trying to bite my nose or at least it looks like she is trying to bite, she is actually just trying to give kisses. Many times people will not understand the dogs behavior since they dont pay enough attention
I am not even looking for a new dog/training. I have a GSD/mal/possible akita mix, she is a service dog and 8yo.
I am stuck in my house due to the "virus lockdown".
This just reminds me of my childhood, in MI allowed to roam the swamps and woodlands by myself as long as I showed back up for dinner. (early 90s, no phones)
Plus, I value the training advice, as life is a journey and there is always something new to teach the dogs.

Honestly, your video was excellent - so informative. I'm very active and outdoorsy and have wanted a GSP for a long time. Alas, I live in the city, in a condo, and seeing your gorgeous playground, realize it just wouldn't be fair to have a GSP in my current environment. Thanks for all the info!

Me and my family have had this same German short haired pointer for 6 years now and I never realized this dog was a sport dog until very recently lol
