the show was successful because of the control he had over the writing, music, script, story, directing, and picking the actors. I don't think anyone else could have done it better.
Interviewer nailed it I thought. Intelligent seeds of questions that Mr Chase picked up and so clearly appreciated and went with, into that place of insight that all interviews want to get. No sycophancy and no imposition or loading. Job done.
One of the better dramatization of 60's period piece RnR films I have seen. I come from that generation it works well, love the music.of course. Now looking at David Chase I can see how the Douglas character could be him 50 years ago! There is even a facial resemblance in a way.
Lets remember though he had worked since his late 20's early 30's as a writer of tv for hire and a tv producer. But he was a grunt writer/producer who had a very blue collar sense of working in the business. Honestly him making The Sopranos in his 50's works better than had he done it in his 30's or even 40's because he did not have enough life experience and understanding to be as deceptive and thoughtful of a writer.
People have strong opinions about some of these interviews. They are welcome to have them. Everyone has their own idea of what they'd choose to ask. I am fine with mine. And, for that matter, so was David Chase. Honestly, the only think I was concerned about was whether he would shy away from talking Sopranos at all, as that was not why we were doing the interview. But he said quite a lot that was interesting, I thought.
You did fine, you let him do the talking instead of making it about you like so many interviewers that try too hard. Interviewing isn't easy, and 90% of the interviews I've seen are done badly, this is done relatively well I think.
The guy asking the questions has a young voice. For some reason I assumed that he was just some kid who would ask uninformed questions and that David would have to tolerate it. I was so wrong. The questions reveal a deep knowledge of the subject and David was happy to answer them. Me likee.
I think it's more in spite of that, rather than because of it. Other great directors with great quality control, like Chase, such as Kubrick and Scorsese, have come from very loving families.
Wow. You're kind of an ass. I'm glad you have your own set of questions for Mr Chase. Hope you get the chance to ask them someday. For me, it was about meeting this guy and trying to get into what makes him tick. I liked this conversation. Sorry you didn't.
I like it too. Sorry bout whoever you were responding to there, but I’m out here 9 years later still watching this so I’d say you nailed this. This is a really good interview, for real, you do a really good job, and it’s awesome you got to talk to him.
Don't listen to that jerk, anonymous interviewer. You're among my favourite interviewers including Charlie Rose, James Lipton and The Hollywood Roundtable. I'm a budding film critic and I want to do what you do (a Australian film journalist advised me to start a twitter page lol). Keep up the good work.
7:39 "I mean you, ... cuz it's fascinating when you look at your career, you know, you're a hard working guy, you're, ya know, you, very talented but also, you're, ya know, you're not a uh, you didn't hit the note, ya know when you were twenty-two, and, .. coast the rest of the way in getting gifts. " Great fucking question. What the fuck?
Great interview. Love David Chase. I love his blunt attitude. But the interviewer is rather inexperienced and there were so many missed opportunities to ask some great questions and dig deeper.
I should research what? Opinions? Discussion? Maturity, may it one day be your friend. I'm sure you're smarter than your unnecessary public insults imply.
This movie could've been GREAT but it's kinda horrible! The ending is so stupid. Shame on you! All ya had to do was let the guy walk down the strip and roll credits. That's ART. What you did with girls in this movie in general was weird sleaze Skinamax type shit. Also, no one needed to actually see a motorcycle crash. It would have been better just hearing and seeing reactions than the corny tv stunt dummy looking thing that just happened. You got all that great music and wasted it on a flop.
The movie WAS garbage. No writing talent at all. He'll probably never make another full length feature again as I can't imagine anyone being so stupid to give this hack $$$.
Hack??? Who??? Mr. Chase??? The man who created HBO's most successful series??? (And HBO has had some kickass series). The man is at a point in his life where he wants to do what he feels like doing. He's already proved that he can make the big money series season after season. He's earned the right to make whatever movie that pleases his Italian American ass. Bada bing, bada boom, bada bang!

I know it is quite randomly asking but does anyone know a good place to stream new tv shows online?
@Alijah Kairo Lately I have been using Flixzone. Just search on google for it :)
He had full control of Many Saints of Newark and look how that turned out. I think the Sopranos was successful DESPITE David Chase.
Interviewer nailed it I thought. Intelligent seeds of questions that Mr Chase picked up and so clearly appreciated and went with, into that place of insight that all interviews want to get. No sycophancy and no imposition or loading. Job done.
Best analysis of an interview ever haha
David Chase is brilliant. Period.
Oh wow very controversial.
So is Jilambu Mustafa and Alibaba Rahim!
Such a great great great little movie! Just bitter sweet and full of real down to earth, real dialogue. Real reality.
This is a seriously skilled interviewer. Absolutely did his homework and asked mostly pertinent questions that I havent really heard before.
One of the best David Chase interviews for sure.
Mystical synchronicity curve

Oh God shut the fuck up. You suck as an interviewer. Fuck you.
@@notno4717 then why are you on every video of this guys? Lol fuck outta here clown
@@thaterasound he mad!
Brilliant interview
The cutaway to "Postman" in the film was a stroke of genius
Great interview interviewer interviewee. Chase is comfortable when people know what they’re talking about.
Don't Stop Beliving

He wrote about mafia theme episodes for the Rockford files back in the 1970’s.
Thanks for the interview, I found it pretty informative and cool :)
So basically while fictionally, Livia’s parenting raised Janice and Tony. In real life - the lady Livia is based on, his mom, gave us David Chase
I think it's more in spite of that, rather than because of it. Other great directors with great quality control, like Chase, such as Kubrick and Scorsese, have come from very loving families.

Are we getting a pt 2 of "Many Saints?"
Bongiorno!

The emperor has spoken
The Jaackeeet !
you're flexiiiiinnnn
With the belt it was like Rommel.
Couldn't disagree more about the interviewer. David Poland is one of my current favorites. DP/30 is a treasure, IMO.
genius
He reminds me of Saul Bellow.
Great fucking question. What the fuck?
Get over it you moron. Its easy to understand the question.
Great
‘A very tonal piece...’? Can someone elaborate what this means?
Atmosphere, I think.
Mood.
Yeah, keep zooming in and zooming out. Other than that, nice interview.
wow this camera man.
Great interview. Love David Chase. I love his blunt attitude. But the interviewer is rather inexperienced and there were so many missed opportunities to ask some great questions and dig deeper.
I can't tell if Chase is increasingly disgusted with David Poland as the interview progresses.
He's not inexperienced. He's scared of Chase and makes sure he doesn't ask him anything stupid because we all know what difficult person Chase is
He's "scared" of Chase?? lol, what is he a child?
Stop with the zoom ins. It’s a fucking interview!
Who ever "hits the note" when they're 22? The interviewer is kind of annoying. Chase is as intelligent as ever though.
He's the worst fucking interviewer.
Woo, Chase is a loud swallower.

Thought the ending with the girl was silly but I did not think the movie had too much sex in it.
@@lauraveney1412 not too much actual sex. Too much emphasis on girls as accessories. That story has been told way too many times.
