- After a two-year hiatus, Three on Three is back. And for our big reboot episode, we're getting philosophical.
In the old days, we'd pick a strict, quantifiable criteria (por ejemplo: Best mechanical watches under $1k) and have three people compare three different watches that hit the mark. Nothing wrong with that approach. But over the years, we've learned that a lot of folks collect for more abstract reasons.
We gathered three women to discuss watches that say "success." Any watch, new or vintage, was eligible. No specific price point, complication set, or aesthetic. For instance, they want a special watch to celebrate a personal milestone - that's it, that's the criteria.

I love the explanation of the manual wind Patek. I love the enthusiasm and knowledge. Reminds me of the satisfaction of the 1960s Zenith I have.

I'm going to choose the graceful slap, Vacheron Constantin. It's the perfect size and so beautiful. Great job, ladies.
I have a 36mm 1960s Vacheron Constantin hand engraved and fluted bezel in 18k / silver dial which had crazy multi layers to it. it's one of my favorites.
And then for everyday wear I do a mother of pearl DJ 41 in steel and a Tudor Black Bay Steel, Universal Geneve Polerouter Date in 18k and champagne dial and a manual wind Zenith with cream colored dial.

This is not about me. It’s about Hodinkee doing a disservice to watch collectors and - most unfortunately - to female watch collectors by depicting them as shallow bordering on utterly vacant.

Not my favourite hodinkee video, but refreshing and good to hear more of a ladies perspective for a change. Such as how a watch can be worn as part of an overall style or look and how it makes you feel.

To each his own, but buying a watch or just any materialistic thing to show off your success is downright tacky imo. What is this desperate need to show off to the world that you’ve made it? Just buy what you like because u like it ppl. Buy a Casio if u love it even if u are a ceo and if u can save and buy yourself an old calatrava even if u are a janitor coz that’s what makes u happy, do that.
Happens all the time. One reaches The pinnacle of success in a field and they celebrate with a watch. No one bats an eye when a man does that. Bankers receive a bonus or a promotion and buy a watch to celebrate their success. Nothing new or garish here, just life. Heck business owners celebrate owning a new acquisition with the purchase of a watch. NBA players celebrate their first signing with a watch (all of which show off their success to the world).
I’m a janitor and my favorite watch is an old patek. I don’t wear it to work though.
You missed the point entirely. Having success in life and appreciating nice things doesn't make one materialistic. Those are your feelings, not the person who's wearing the watch. And anyone who buys a Patek Ellipse could care less what others think.

This is the biggest hating comment 😂😂😂, they are celebrating a big accomplishment and they decided to go for those pieces they happen to be very successful women that celebrated with very very very nice watches that happen to be in gold, they literally bought what they wanted. If you want a Nomos go for it, Tudor ? Be my guest a Rolex? If you can afford one go nuts. Please do not hate on these ladies and enjoy the hobby.

It's nice to see women get excited about watches. My favorite of the three watches is the Vacheron Constantin. However the Patek and Cartier are also pretty cool.

Great format. I learned something new about the santos; I had no idea that the first bracelet version was two-tone. I also learned something new about the ellipse; it never occurred to me that sans lugs is more traditional for the line. I didn't pick up anything new about the VC, but still worth calling attention to a very nice watch.
yeah they released it like that a couple times as tributes. The high polish bezel actually makes more sense as a gold accent.

The Patek is leaning heavily on its name, the "beauty" and "adoration" come after you've seen the brand name. Granted it's a vintage hence simplicity, but no less a brand effect piece.
I love that Cartier classics are coming back with a rush, but I’m not loving them in gold. The shade of gold looks far too plated or PDV (senior moment, cannot remember the acronym).
I was so glad to finally see a panel of women discussing watches, as I believe that perspective has been sorely lacking and is badly needed these days.
Having said that, I could do without all that "success, power and confidence" rhetoric. You're all clearly active, successful women in 2022 ... in this day and age do you really still feel the need to be more powerful and confident than you already are? Shouldn't that be a given for driven, independent women by now? This is the kind of stuff I was hearing back in the 1980s, for goodness' sake! I guess I just don't see what could still be missing from your lives that you would need to use external objects as forms of validation and sources of power. Then again I'm not a woman so I concede that I probably have a blind spot there.
In any event, I would say that all three watches are great, but that Vacheron in particular is astoundingly beautiful.
The Patek is such a great woman’s watch
Don't want to labour this point, but I always thought hodinkee did a great job of positioning watches as unisex, and Cara Barrett always did a great job at speaking about watches from a watch enthusiasts perspective, not from a woman trying to show success with a watch. This whole video is misjudged insofar as it's trying to push a 'womans' angle.
Plus, the “women’s angle” being pushed here is one of almost complete shallowness, which appears to be an oddly sexist, reductive choice. There are plenty of female collectors out there that see watches as something more than a fashion accessory - a concept Hodinkee loves to advance. I’d like to hear from them.

The video content could have been better, without the unnatural vibe of sharing technical specs that appear to be like reading it from a watch brand brochure. As to the overall setup, it’s a breathe of fresh air but let’s get rid of comments that tend to equate watches with success only. It should be all about passion.
