Talking Watches 2 With John Mayer

  • It's hard to believe it's been over five years - half a decade (!!) - since I sat down with John Mayer at a little cafe down the road from our office, a four-person WeWork rental that we hadn't even filled out yet. The HODINKEE team back then consisted of myself, Mr. Will Holloway, and the one and only SJPeezy - Stephen J. Pulvirent. Our team was small but strong, and all we needed back then was a free afternoon with a rock star to make some content that we are still proud of to this very day. I am proud to say that both Stephen and Will are still very much a part of this business, even now that we are over 10 times the size, and our offices are, well, a little bigger too. Talking Watches With John Mayer aired on September 25, 2013, and since then it has been viewed almost 2 million times. And now we're back with another one.

Loved this: 4:38: - "This reminds me of an era of when I was dreaming of making it. I was a kid dreaming of making it when these watches were in catalogs. You have a certain aesthetic in mind of what making it would look like for you. These watches remind me of what it must have been like to have a brand new gold Rolex in 1985. And you have a little piece of where you would have been, if you really did make it, when you were 9." ~ JM

His interviews (rare of late as they are) are always entertaining, insightful, and funny and intelligent at the same time. I actually think he wouldnt be so interested as he is in this video just due to the disparity in the dollar value of guitars vs his vintage watches. His recent Martin siignature edition D-45 guitar is like 20k USD street price, and thats like his highest end guitar, and its nothing in comparison with the $$ value of the watches he's shown on here. Im not even hating but i guess its a financial status thing where you lose interest in something and start seeing it as tools when it becomes disposably cheap relative to your financial status. John is my favourite artist and my all time guitar hero, so im no hater, im just hypothesizing why he wouldnt be so interested about talking guitars from a "collectors" POV

WOW, SUCH A REALLY GOOD INTERVIEW. I HAD NO CLUE JOHN MAYER WAS SO DEEP AND WELL SPOKEN. BRILLIANT INTERVIEW, ALTHOUGH THE OTHER GUY COULDN'T GET A WORD IN MOST OF THE TIME; IT'S FUNNY!

John Mayer is one of the most eloquent speakers I've ever heard. I can listen to him talk about anything anytime.

There are no Rolex, AP, Patek, or Mille watches in my collection, but every morning I wake up and get excited about what watch I will pick out for the day. That's what it's about. A $300-$400 watch does for me what a 30-$40,000 does for John. It's the same feeling.

Saw John Mayer in concert last night here in Pittsburgh… he was wearing the AP Perpetual Calendar in white ceramic. Gorgeous watch. I thought I was balling with my Rolex Hulk last night. I’ve watched this episode a million times so i was curious what he was going to wear and he didnt disappoint.

John is that uncle who never shuts up about the old days but with anecdotes so quirky and interesting that you can't help but listen.

Hearing all these types of watches and the stories behind it, makes me look into watches! Its like a non-car-guy is hearing F40, F50, F360, F430, 612, 458, 488, 812. Need to learn watches!

HODINKEE owes a lot but A LOT to John Mayer

Yeah, the first talking watches really got them noticed. I've always thought that the second step to Hodinkee's notoriety was being the only "watch publication" invited to and reporting on Apple's launch of the first Apple Watch.
