How to Fit a 5 Lever Mortice Deadlock

- In today's video I will be showing you how I've just installed a 5 lever mortice deadbolt on my garden shed door.
The mortice deadbolt was to replace the old fashioned rim lock that had been on the door previously but stopped working several months ago. With a few tools and the right preparation any of us DIYers can carry out an installation like this!

Another great video given me some confidence for a small project I'm working on.
This prob best I've ever seen when fitting mortice I usually done it whilst the door is standing but that was cool to take the door off and then securing using own made wedge stand.

Thanks buddy! You can do either, to be honest, but if you can be bothered to take the door off, it makes the whole job easier.

Thanks. Yes, I tried to get that screw out by grinding a new slot head onto it, but it just sheared off when I tried to turn it. 👏
@@CharlieDIYte I have a set of screw removal adaptors from Irwin that may have worked but probably not if the shank just snaps. They are handy items to have for not much money. You can also get ones from Irwin for bolts.

I like your videos. I think what I like the most is that you don't profess to be an expert and you just focus on explaining your knowledge to DIY ers which from the replies people seem grateful of.

The problem I find with experts (and how many times have you got angry with an instruction manual that just doesn't properly explain how to do something) is that they often can't explain something from the mindset of someone who's not an expert, and that is maybe where I bridge the gap. Bottom line, I just love explaining how to do stuff, littering it with the mistakes I've made along the way 😉

You're very welcome. Thanks for the comment. You absolutely will, after all, that's how I started, and that was long before TH-cam. They key is to buy the right diameter drill bits, and have a decent, sharp set of chisels 👍

Thanks, David. I went into a little more detail on how I made them here th-cam.com/video/_bIqnAf8b2Y/w-d-xo.html but it's obviously very straightforward. You might just want to cut one side at a slight angle as you can see I did, so that it takes the angle of the wedge better.

You have nothing to worry about Mohammad, if anything I'm losing the renovation battle here because ironically I spend so long editing videos that I don't have time to get on top of the DIY. There's so much still to do, it will keep me going for years!

With brass screws, I like to drive the holes first with steel screws, then take it out and fit the brass ones. In Aussie hardwood the brass screws usually snap.

Just found your channel and did some catching up on it. Love your explanations and reasons/options. Tbh I didn't even need to watch half the stuff I did. Your content kept me keen.
That being said, I'm in the middle of having to run some Ethernet cables around the living room. Could you go over some options? Main issues are around door frames!
Thanks, I really appreciate that! I take it the room isn't carpeted, as if it was, it would be easier to go under the threshold strip. It's a bit difficult to comment without understanding more about the space, or what you're trying to do. Maybe email me some photos to charliediyte@gmail.com. By the way, if you're extending your WiFi, you HAVE TO use UniFi, either their AP AC Pro or the Lite version. It's perfect for what you're doing as it relies on hard wired connections, but seemlessly extends wifi. I've got two of them in the house and one in the shed at the bottom of the garden! Really easy to set up for us DIYers.

@@CharlieDIYte well I don't comment just to criticise... actually I admire the way you go about the jobs you take on - you approach things in an easy to follow way, and sometimes a fresh pair of eyes can spot a more logical way of doing things. It's too easy for a tradesman to make videos showing DIY ers how to do things... but we're not looking at it from the DIYers perspective - you are. I hope you don't mind me correcting you where needed though - for your viewers benefit as well as your own.

@@Stadium-wr3vg you Don't need a lot of tools to fit a mortice lock,I have morticed several with just a 19mm chisel and a hammer, did one one with a chisel and a rock just to prove a point.
Some form of drill is handy for pilot holes and keyway though.
A2 stainless would have been more than good enough (also quite a bit cheaper than A4 which is more suited to marine environments as it's a bit soft but excellent corrosion resistance in salt water).
I'm with you 110% on the torx head screws, I try and use nothing else these days for all the reasons you mentioned.

To date I have never seen a solid brass screw with anything other than a slotted head so I think those screws are almost certainly brass plated so you don't need to nanny them too much, I know some people watching might have heard scare stories of using brass screws.
I'm sure you're right, thinking about it, but always worth piloting in oak.👍👏

Hi Charlie, fab video even though it an older one. Quick question- would you still employ this method of using a spade/auger drill bit to make the cavity for lock body then neaten up with a chisel or have you come across any better methods router etc? Thanks in advance
Thanks Mosaddiq. No I haven't really. The problem with a router is it won't plunge deep enough to cut out the cavity for the lock body so you are a bit restricted to using this technique
Souber morticer us by far the quickest way,dint like using it on old doors though because of hidden nails and screws.
I won't even use my good chisels on a door like this.

Great video but I have a nitpick. Isn't the escutcheon with the cover supposed to go on the _inside_? The point is to stop people being able to peep through the keyhole .
That is a very valid nitpick. Yes of course it should be on the inside. I don't know what I was thinking putting it on the outside 🤦 Thanks for pointing that out!!

Hi Charlie, another interesting video, quick question buddy, you mentioned the Dewalt tool roll, previously you recommended the Ryobi tool roll, is there really much difference between them, everytime I watch your videos I start making shopping lists of tools to buy......its dangerous watching you... :D
Hi buddy. The Ryobi tool roll was a lovely little bit of kit but they don't make it anymore, so the DeWalt is I think the best option out there. The masonry bits were a bit iffy, but I've replaced those with the Bosch universal drill bits. I literally use it on every job. It's just the convenience of it, compared to that big old Makita set. Hi Charlie. I'm about to fit a mortice lock to my exterior wooden door. This is a job I have done before, but it occurred to me that the door frame might be weakened by removing some of the tenon when boring out the hole. Any thoughts?
I wouldn't worry about it Robert. The tenon position should have been designed with a mortice lock in mind. You can normally see the tenons in which case try and place the lock to avoid them. 👍🏻
@@CharlieDIYte Thanks for prompt reply Charlie. I am re-assured. As this is a replacement door, it would be easier to keep the mortice in the same place to match the lock plate in the old frame. This will encroach upon the tenon. If I can move it slightly, I will.
You need to invest into getting a souber mortise tool, I been putting it off for years but recently got one second hand and it’s a dream to put mortise locks and latches etc in, which I used to hate installing.....why didn’t you refix the frame, you had the fixings in your hand and it would have only taken 15mins
A multi tool is better to remove the wood after drilling the holes 😎

Erbauer drill and impact driver rather than Raiobi?
Only because my Erbauer drill and driver are brushless, and the chuck on my Ryobi combi is on the way out. Still love my Ryobi stuff though and actually my Ryobi impact is easier to control than the Erbauer if I'm honest.
I love my Erbauer impact driver and the Erbauer sds drill is great as well

I bought the same erbauer set after approval from "the management" when plasterboarding the ceiling of the garage, with a few drilling jobs in the garden as an excuse to get both. I'm very impressed, though the erbauer cordless circular saw has the blade on the right rather than on the left as on your erbauer CS. I'm right handed and would rather have the left hand blade, though this isn't often discussed.

Neat job. But ...1) Why are you taking the door off? You're just making work. Wedge the bottom of the door.
2) It's a mortice, not a rebate. 3) Clamp some spare bits of timber at each side of the door, when you're chiselling out for the face plate (if you haven't got a palm router handy, which most won't haven't) otherwise you risk the cut bursting out the face of the door.
Thanks. I took the door off because it only took a few minutes to remove and it's easier to work on the door when it's in the door clamps. Fair point though about clamping the spare bits of timber.
@@CharlieDIYte I have to disagree with you on that point, when you get used to them it is far easier and quicker to do with the door hung.
But if you feel more comfortable doing it in a stand then that is up to you,everyone has their preferences.
After saying not everybody will have a square chisel proceeds to use another few tools router and power file not every one will have to do the rebate etc or is that just me. 🙁

Depends what you're general approach is to DIY. The more tools I acquire the more prepared I am for future jobs.
