Will Paterson . Hey, I am huge fan of your work. I am a computer application student from India, I was always into design but never really had the chance to pursue it. I never could afford the Adobe softwares nor the technical requirements to run them. But recently I was introduced to inkscape, an open source alternative to illustrater . Can you do a video on what you feel about inkscape and how far you think I can go with it?
Will Paterson - some video suggestions if you haven't already made them - rather than a critique, how about discussing sort of key points on what you look for that makes a logo good vs bad? Also, how about a video discussing the challenges of clients that challenge you? (as in don't have a trained eye but want to dissect your work). Just things I think would be interesting to hear your perspective on.
Thank you for this video! I'm attempting to make a logo for my start up business and the first version I created wasn't what I wanted it to be. After watching this, I have a much better understanding of the logo creating process and am very excited to take another try at it! Great video! Especially for 4 years ago!
I really love these kind of "abstract" or geometric logo's. Even making them is so much fun, but its actually not easy to make them to be usefull. I mean, they still have to somehow point to the topic, or company, or feeling it wants to express and i have to tell you a LOT of people and costumers dont see what they should in them, (and lets skip the part where you say "make it better you are just bad", that can be a part of it yes) . And thats just 1 thing, the other is : They dont believe in them, or how much skill it requires to make a good one. So they are going to be reluctant to buy it...especially from a beginner designer....any tips on this? Should i just keep making non abstract ones for years, just because it sells better?
Truly, at the moment I am currently flipping through Logo Modernism while listening to this video and then you pulled it out in the video and I was like, "WHAT THE" xD
Just landed my first 2 clients yeww, ones a re-brand and the other is a new business. Watching this really helped as i have been after something like this for a while
Will Paterson, you're a very gifted logo designer. I've done things similarly to how you have and designed logos and won a contest or two as well. Ignore the dumbasses who come here to talk shit, and know that your efforts to make the world more beautiful are appreciated.
I am a complete amateur icon designer (I’m a BI analyst and reporting content manager). I’ve been using PowerPoint (*hangs his head in shame*) since 2010 to create icons for SharePoint and Confluence sites to access reporting assets. I really enjoyed watching your creative process! I subscribed to your channel so I’ll be back to check out more of your videos. Thanks for sharing!
So your process is to scribble the letter E because the company starts with E. And THEN after scanning your favorite E you decide what it could represent? ...Well... How about thinking before drawing? In my opinion the first and most important thing with a logo is a good idea that represents the company's business/ the main topic they are dealing with etc. This should take a good chunk of the time invested into a logo designing process. Everything else comes thereafter ...otherwise it's nothing more than a pretty E.
the designer takes the brief into consideration throughout the whole process, if you haven't realized he literally sketches logos that pertain to the brief, starting with the letter 'E' is one of many ways you can start so I don't understand why you can't accept this process... furthermore if you don't agree with the process that isn't an issue, designing is about iterative processes and as long as everyone has a thorough process that benefits their workflow and outcome, it shouldn't matter. the way I see it, he's explaining his own process which in fact relates to mine a lot, I've interpreted some parts of the video for myself and I'm now taking these skills and applying them to my practice because that's what the purpose of a tutorial is.
Even so the whole idea and point he was trying to make is to be rough. So yes you think of things that represent the company and their values/vision then write them down. Based on this you will have a better idea when sketching ideas on paper.
I’ve done a few fake and a few real dot.coms in Wix, I now have Illustrator 19 from 1997 installed rarer late, I like the visual effects in Illustrator, Wix had limitations, and might be easier to use, but with limitations, with Illustrator - a whole new cup of tea.
My first thought was a UK three-pin plug, at a jaunty angle with the live and neutral pins representing the upper and lower bars of the 'E' and the earth pin representing the centre bar of the 'E'. The body of the plug represents the back of the 'E'... The jaunty angle allows the middle bar to be a bit shorter than the other two bars. Also, everyone knows what a plug looks like and associates it immediately with electricity. A second plug rotated through 90 deg could represent an 'M' for the metering part. Great video, it's always important to emphasise the importance of drawing (no pun intended) from the words and associated terms and phrases of the company.
Very good video. You have great ideas for logo design, this is great for young students that want to learn. Peterson keep yourself active and creating your design of logos

Will, this is a neutral suggestion because you've been wondering why people are salty: If you remove the "from start to finish" promise in the main title and substitute it with "getting an idea", they will most likely not feel fooled anymore. The thumbnail alone suggested to me that there is more than what was ultimately shown. I didn't feel fooled, neither am I mad, because I understand marketing and that youtubers want clicks to make money via ads etc, but I can tell you that this is the main reason why the chat is heated up in your video. anyways, have a good day man cheers

Why not take the three line E you made and use those lines as pins on a plug socket? The middle line that's shorter reminds me of the three-pin plug in UK standards.

Hey Will, in your opinion whats the difference in value to employers/customers between designers with a Bachelors, Assosciates, Certificate, and Self-Taught? Do they care? What are advantages and disadvantages of each category? Thanks.
Ok, now I know that “Logo Modernism” Taschen’s book is to buy :) Generally you could create a video on BOOKS on that subject which you recommend for future designers.

Kent VanderVelden a professional designer should charge you at least 1100 for a logo design. (I am a professional designer) Students could do it for you, but they will often not understand identity design and your business will run the risk of having to redesign the logo in the near future and spending WAY more reprinting all of your company collateral. Save up for a professional. It's worth it.
Stefanie D'Castro Excellent information. That seems a reasonable amount. I was concerned it would be far more. I also had not considered the legal aspects. Thank you

For me "gettin the idea" IS the hardest part. Fleshing it out is easy.
I try to always have one.
silveravnt I have the same problem, and whenever I draw in my sketch book I always draw random things ..💔
3:43
I’m the opposite. I can vaguely see the idea in my mind but translating that to something “tangible” is a different story.
@@rorisxng I think that makes you a "designer" and me just an "artists".
The hardest part is not designing logo, but why you design it, strategy behind it & the idea strategic behind the visual.
@Idea Headed like!!!!!
