    Do you think it might be a good idea to calibrate my monitor? Seriously, the first 90 minute B&H video that I've been compelled to watch all the way through. Learnt a lot this morning. Thanks :)

    how do you load printer or paper profiles? How do you calibrate your monitor without spending 100's of dollars?

    • @BandH
      @BandH  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Check out our Explora article: How To Calibrate Your Monitor: bhpho.to/2YjTcmR.
      If there is an ICC profile specific for the printer then the manufacturer should be able to provide that ICC profile. For a Windows install, just right-click and choose to install them. Windows takes care of the rest. The ICC profile is used for soft proofing. If there is not an ICC profile specific for the printer then just export JPEG images using the sRGB color space or print to a file in the print module and you will have a file that you can hand off to their lab technician to print on the printer. community.adobe.com/

    If my monitor's ability to display color is about that of the sRGB color space, why is it important that LR uses a version of ProPhoto RGB internally? I am, after all, looking at an sRGB rendering of my image and making decisions based on that rendering.

    • @BandH
      @BandH  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Sam Cox First and foremost, you need to create a custom profile for your monitor. I recommend the i1Display Pro or the Colormunki Photo (if you do your own printing), or the Spyder5 Pro or elite. RAW files do not have a color space. So, the colorspace setting on your camera does not effect raw files. When Lightroom processes Raw files, it uses the ProPhotoRGB color space. There is nothing you can do to change it. The reason is less color information is lost during the processing stage. ProPhotoRGB is the largest color space, so it is the optimum one to work in. You can export multiple versions of the same photo, each with a different color space, if you have need to do so.If future output devices (monitors, printers etc.) support ProPhotoRGB (they don’t at the moment) then your photos will be ready for them. Color management is greatly simplified. You don’t have to make any decisions about what color space to work in until you export your photos. This is the biggest advantage of all.
      How Lightroom manages color is when processing Raw files, Lightroom (and Adobe Camera Raw in Photoshop) uses its own color space based on ProPhoto RGB. It provides a large color gamut to work with the wide range of colors that digital sensors are capable of recording. When you export a photo in Lightroom it gives you the choice of three color spaces.
      ProPhoto RGB: ProPhoto RGB is the largest of the three. It roughly matches the range of colors that a digital camera sensor can capture:
      Adobe RGB (1998): Adobe RGB (1998) is smaller than ProPhoto RGB, but larger than the next choice, sRGB. It roughly matches the color gamut of CMYK printers used to print books and magazines
      .
      sRGB: sRGB is the smallest color space of the three. It represents the color space that most monitors are able to display.
