As part of my goal to becoming a better artist, I do this sketching routine nearly every day. On the days that I work, I will do the routine during my lunch hours or after work and on the days that I have off, I do this routine typically in the mornings.

    My tip is to fill a jar with words, characters, ideas, subjects. Anything that could give you an idea what to draw. Works for me, when I have no idea what to draw or paint.

      Your sketchbook is MEANT to have imperfections!! I mean, where else are you supposed to practice and sharpen your skills in order to become perfect?? A loose sheet of paper, something you can easily lose? Naw, don’t be scared! I used to be like you but then I said, bruh, if I’m not perfect now, then why tf did I buy a 20 dollar sketchbook??? Idk you be you I guess, all I’m saying is that you shouldn’t be afraid and that you bought that book for a reason...to practice!!

    • @0live115
      @0live115 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You can only draw perfect if you keep drawing even if you don’t like how it turns out. Just go with the flow and do whatever, don’t care how it looks just keep sketching and you will improve I promise 💖

    Hey! I’m a young, aspiring artist and this really helps! I just got a new sketchbook and was scared to “mess up the pages”, but you have taught me that it is just a sketchbook, and there is nothing to be afraid of! Thx for reading everyone!
    Edit: I just came back to this video a year later and completely forgot I commented on it! I just finished my first sketchbook yesterday and am now starting a new one! I’ve definitely learned over the past year that not everything I draw has to be perfect.

      It is actually pretty fun flipping back and seeing your "mess ups" and comparing them to more recent sketches. Without having "mess ups" you wont be able to improve.

    The way you draw faces is phenomenal! Your style is very unique - I like how its mostly realistic with a slight cartoon-ish feel to it; it's very subtle, but you know it's there. Also, your drawing process from 4:49-7:50 was entrancing. You're one of the few artists I've come across who actually gives characters bushy eyebrows, full lips, and beauty marks/freckles. It's just...wow.

      I think completing a sketchbook is pretty tough. With all of my sketchbooks, I can't say that I've ever completed one (this includes back to back pages). I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not. Probably using 1 sketchbook like you do is a better option :D

    Your work is lovely and I see you are working hard to learn. I am a professional artist and took me ten years to find all the tricks that the best artists use for sketching, so I will tell you some:
    Try to sketch with hard lead colored pencils going up in tones. You start with light blue then going to purple and finally maybe black. That allows you to over-sketch on top without using erasers. Verithin Prismacolor is a great product for that but any hard lead brand will do!
    I also advise you to try col-erasel Prismacolor pencils because you can erase them and again the colors can help you going up in values as you decide the lines you keep. They are exactly for that purpose and the most professional artists use them.
    Another tip is to simply sketch with pens and live with the lines. This type of sketching feels like freedom because will help your trace to just flow. Choose a cheap pen or choose micron pens. Any pen you love or feels smooth. I think this should be the first technique people use before even pencils.
    For extra special tip you can buy a great quality mixed media journal and paint the background one color with acrylics then sketch with pens on top. Pens will love this background and they will feel super smooth as you trace your drawing.
    ❤ Last and best advice; after all that, you can go back to your pencils and for the eraser, clean it super easily with sand paper. They sell mini package sheets for sanding the pencils to keep them clean of wood and keep them sharp but they are amazing to clean your eraser while you sketch away. starrpoint.blogspot.com/2010/01/keep-your-pencils-sharp.html

    Of course reference photos are not cheating. You always have to have a reference unless you are creating fantasy creatures and even those will have to have correct animal anatomy. If you go outside and draw a tree that you see you are using a reference. A live model is still a reference. A still life is still a reference. Why people get the idea that using a reference is ''copying'' or ''cheating'' is baffling to me. Use some common sense. If using a reference is cheating then Rembrandt and all the other masters were nothing more than copiers. LOL. The only stuff that doesn't need a reference of some sort is the abstract stuff that also doesn't require any kind of talent. Stuff like Jackson Pollack's paintings. Get over it people, if you want it to look like something use a reference.

    • @utstzzz6166
      @utstzzz6166 5 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Agreed. I hate when people say that references aren't making you any better.

    • @dart354
      @dart354 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Exactly, and, correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure if you decide to take art as a subject in school don't they require you to use a reference when drawing?

    • @nan032
      @nan032 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      To all the people that use reference photos (to everyone) how do you do to actually get better at drawing thanks to those?
      I use reference photos but I feel like it doesn’t really help me when I try to redraw something similar without the reference later on. Will my third-drawing-eye open at some point and get used to simplifying lines and shapes or I might be doing smth wrong?

    • @rhiannakaur7875
      @rhiannakaur7875 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Anna Ël I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong. For me, reference photos help with facial proportions and I look back through my sketchbook whenever I need help drawing something. A little tip could be to draw from a reference photo and then try and draw the same image but without the reference :)

    • @Han-jd4lo
      @Han-jd4lo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agreed, reference photos are not copying at all. They just help you! Unlike bases, if you use a base then thats not gonna help you improve.

    I find that i have an easier time drawing on just printer paper. The amount of money spent to buy a new sketch book is so expensive i'm always pushing myself to be perfect at it instead of enjoying the art. I attempt to keep from freaking out over the little things but it seems like a waste if i fill it up with just imperfect drawings? Does that make sense?

    • @Diammyra

      I used to tutor math and the first thing I taught on the first day with absolutely everyone.. STOP SAYING YOU SUCK AT MATH. Or in this case, stop saying you are bad at drawing or art or anatomy or ANYTHING. When you say something over and over, you will believe yourself and subconsciously do whatever to be right. (Your ego hates being wrong. ) Meaning you will be bad just to prove to yourself that you're bad.. crazy, huh? Start saying outloud to yourself "I'm a good artist and getting constantly improving." Say it to your cat. Your mailman. Your moms mechanic. And watch your art skills get better every day!

    I’ve always loved art and drawing ever since I was younger, but I’ve never really stuck to my goals of improving and I’ve been so bummed out about it because now I feel like it’s too late lol. But I’ve been filling the Inktober prompts for this year and now I want to really get back into art again - it’s been so, so fun coming up with just sketches, but a week in and I’m starting to get pessimistic again because my works aren’t that good. I think I really need to learn to forgive myself for not being good as you’ve put it haha! Thank you for sharing your experience and the tips! I took human anatomy and physiology and no wonder, human anatomy wasn’t that hard for me. I ended thinking of medical illustration career at that time, but I broke my dreams for there are not lots of programs for that. I gave up on drawing, but every time I am in class, I draw and doodle. For some reason, my friend gave me a sketch book because he saw I had skill and told me to practice more. I didn’t think much about it, but I was in Pinterest app and gave me curiosity to check art once again and I miss it. I want to draw once again. Drawing humans is so cool. 🌷 watching videos like this gives me more ideas.. thank you. 🌷🌷

Don’t have to be perfect ! the idea that using references is cheating has to be one of, if not THE, worst idea thrown around by artists/about art. i don't know who started it, but it's a lie. references are essential to learning!
    _disney_ had people actually act out their movies and used it as reference! you can find videos of it on youtube! people used to use ropes and wood to make physical grid sets they could place in front of what they wanted to draw to help them get it accurate on their canvas!
    my art improved _dramatically_ from using references!

    I try my best to sketch everyday. But there are times where I don't feel like it, and when this time comes, I listen. It's not a bad thing, it actually helps you refresh your mind. And don't expect to make something perfect in your sketchbook. Treat it as your diary, it is a place where you learn and improve, even if it is just a doodle. No one will see your sketchpad/sketchbook anyways.

    I usually work on separate paper made for the media I''m using which ill work on and then after I've finished the piece, I stick it into a giant sketchbook, anoate it, sketch some stuff around it ect ect. If it's relevant to the piece i just did, worse in quality/just a quick doodle, i directly sketch it in my main sketchbook

    I have one sketchbook for so called "more inappropriate" art. That's the sketchbook that not a lot of people that know me know about. 🎨But the other sketchbooks don't really have a theme. I don't only use it as a sketchbook. ✏️I also put pictures, brochures, business cards and prints from other artists in it or I ask friends if they wanna draw something in it. 👨‍🎨It's a lot of fun 😊👩‍🎨

    My sketchbooks have *always* been little, contained, chaotic explosions of random creativity. I’m 37 and have been abusing my sketchbooks since I could hold a pencil: I’m talking about all kinds of media mixed in, working on whatever page or orientation I just happened to open to at that particular moment. Starting from the very back, or a random middle page, making upside down drawings, sideways marker scribbles, next to fine, brushed lines in India ink, next to a grocery list, or a doodle. My children have been known to add in their own artwork or scribble an addition to one of mine.
    Fast forward to this very week. I recently bought TWO new sketchbooks and am trying to train myself to at the very least keep all my art upright and in some kind of chronological order. Little goals to work on to reign in the random chaos.
    After 37 years of working off the cuff, wish me lots of luck!
    I do feel though that organizing my sketches will help my organize my thought process better, ultimately leading to better planning and better art. Working from random bursts of inspiration can be fun, but I want to really try to refine my art, and planning seems like a likely way to help.
    Another thing I have been doing this year is loading up my iPad with reference drawings/photos/tutorials, etc. I separate them into categories and periodically go through my collection to add or delete new things. Using references isn’t cheating, unless you happen to trace those pics. References help train your eye. Always try to study the artists you admire in particular, see what they pay attention to and how they utilize expression and movement.
    ...The kids however are still welcome to use my “good” art supplies (even if they have their own,) because mom is cool like that 😂
    I love your backstory, going from pet portraits and making a very concentrated effort to improve yourself - well done!
    If anyone wants to connect on Instagram you can find me @erinmadethat
    Thanks for the tips and the inspiration 🤓😁☺️

    I have a few sketchbooks too. I have one where I'm just doing lion king fan art, because I'm trying to learn about their anatomy and facial features and how to draw them, and I wanted all the drawings in one place so that I can go back and hopefully see the progress I made. The other two sketchbooks I have are for the Udemy classes I take, one each.

    I have looooots of sketchbooks! But I like to, you know, chaotically mix everything with everything, so that my sketchbooks kinda spicen themselves. Except for that one sketchbook where I did Inktober2017. But not because it was meant to be for the Inktober. Just because I was carrying it in my bag everyday and didn't saw a reason to change it.

    I had a bad habit of starting to draw in a new sketchbook without finishing the last one, so I swapper my sketchbooks with drawing sheets I usually buy 5A4 drawing sheets which cost me only 1 dollar in and used to draw on those 5 sheets and it's my daily routine, in the end of the year when I pile up them they were more than 12 sketchbooks, so if someone had same problem try this thing.

    Duh. I have two "main" sketchbooks. The first one is Canson Artbook One it already looks pretty bad, so I use it for swatches and experiments and wet techniques - the paper is only 100g/m2, so it doesn't take it well, but it's my "rubbish sketchbook" anyways.
    The other one my favourite Winsor&Newton sketchbook 170g/m2. It's surface is supersmooth and white. It's perfect for traditional inks (both dye and pigment based) and I use it only for more ambitious projects. However it's only has 50 pages since the paper is so thick.
    However I'd love to know what's the sketchbook you're using. I'm looking for something I could use for journaling. I prefer spiral bound sketchbooks with smooth paper (I use fountain pen for writing, so otherwise it feathers) that can take one or two washes of water for watercolour pencils (130g/m2 and up are ok, really). Could you recomend anything?

    i have a 'sketch book' just for pencils and maybe pens, but it's gigantic so i use it for whatever as long as it doesn't ruin the paper, i have a smaller mix media one which i use for mostly pencil/colored pencils, and 3 watercolor ones, which of course are for watercolors, then i have a black paper one which is mostly for pencil or pen
