    As a former bricklayer, I have to applaud you in laying a recycled brick path! It looks great to me, and I think you'll appreciate how the path ages with the technique you've used :) I particularly liked the parts of Baltimore you chose to reveal in this video, it says a lot about how you view the city. Very cool

      Of course! Stop motion has always been a big draw for me, ever since I was a kid, and I really didn't want to miss getting my hands on a copy of "Seed of Choice". It's so rare to find stop animation films / shorts, and even more rare to find something with a subject I truly care about haha Your content never fails to deliver!
      ... but I won't lie, I was cringing when I saw you laying out the bricks all straight and uniform. However, there was relief when you started turning them around to create an organic type of pattern, making it something with interest and character :D 12:48 is a particularly beautiful shot.

      You deserve that & more. As to the stability of the bricks, I had used pavers for this purpose but found that after some time, the sand below started shifthing and the pavers moved considerable and became unstable. I have now built a frame using 2x4"'s - just a thought.

    You’re a funny guy. You have this TH-cam channel doing gardening but you are like a soul still longing to be back in a mother time. You are a writer because you are a story teller. This 2nd hand place takes on a new life through your words. But I love how you take 2 bricks out of your trunk at a time. And how you are not really dressed for the occasion, but dressed in clothes that look like you are just going somewhere, somewhere else but not getting ready to do a brick walkway. I love the red brick added to different structures. I grew up where they made the red brick and our streets were paved in it replacing the cobblestone. I have now watched a couple of your videos and I love how you do transform them into a country cottage garden. Your front yard was beautiful and your flowers just loved it there. For some reason I see you in London many years ago and perhaps living outside the city in a country style cottage. Sort of like the neighbor to the Great Gatsby.

    I so appreciate this style of a brick path, I can relate to your comment on the tutorial videos. When I cleared my yard, I dug up a lot of historic bricks (possibly 1800-on) that used to form a wall of a house. I've been using them everywhere I can, but they're never even. The yard just wouldn't feel right if it was too "perfect."

    Something crazy while I was landscaping in our yard, I actually found a brick walkway under the grass from ages ago, and I restored it! I incorporated it into my garden, and it is the main alley of my layout. I even added more bricks in spots and made garden beds with them.

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Most of my soil is naturally black clay/silt because I'm in a river valley and the house is old. I used to live in a newer home before and it probably was infilled with soil when built and it had red clay subsoil. Even though my soil is already ok in comparison, it has become incredible with the addition of organic matter. Our area was known to make red bricks so red clay is not too far. I just have to dig deep enough.

We find that everytime we put some kind of architectural change into our garden, we are always happy, whether it is building a path of woodchips, making a trellis of some sort or creating a sitting area with shade. Great video Siloe! Thanks for showing the Second Chance. I never knew about that one. I did the same thing in my front garden ( East side of the house ) and I, too, wanted my path to look as if it had been there since the house was built in 1930. However, I got my bricks for free on Craigslist. I am basically a dumpster diver and my favorite price is FREE...so I constantly watch for things that I can recycle and get for free for my garden. Love your videos! Thanks for taking the time to share them with us.

    Hi Siloé, first of all - THANK YOU for making these awesome videos!! I stumbled across your channel just recently and subscribed right after watching a first video of yours - you really put out very high quality made clips (shooting, editing, commenting..awesome thumbnails, too). Your unique way of commenting your clips with your very calm and relaxing voice is like telling a story and instantly drew me in:-) ..and since English is not my native tongue I am glued to the screen picking up new (or forgotten in my head) words and phrases thru your eloquent way of talking while being mesmerized by your beautiful cinematography! (wow, I even impressed myself with the length of that sentence;-) I am at awe with your talents! I've been watching a lot of your videos now within the last few days and am looking forward to watching the rest every now and then as little pieces of candy at the end of a not-so-sweet-day maybe:D Thank you for sharing all of this with viewers like me! And I'm glad you decided to continue making videos! Cheers from Germany! Stef:)
    Btw, I have a balcony myself where I at least grow some food of my own treasuring every little strawberry and chili I harvest:-) ..and every year I wonder if we have enough space to sit there as well in between all of those plants - we usually end up squeezing between the tomatoes and the raspberries;-)

    Wow! That's a lot of work you've done. It looks great now. I didn't find turning my lawn into beds as much work only because I couldn't afford to import a lot of compost as it was a new garden (just moved house), and having heavy clay, I couldn't manage digging in organic matter. Instead I went for the no-dig option and cut the path turf into squares which I upturned onto the spaces that would become the beds, instantly creating raised beds. I then covered the beds in paper and straw to protect them until I could afford compost to mulch. Three seasons later, I am happy that I didn't spend any more energy than I needed to. I love your garden and what you do. Thank you so much for sharing.

    I saw your post on Patreon. Suffice to say I have watched nearly all of your informative gardening videos of the last 4 or 5 years. There are months if not years of content to chew through for any new viewer, and your master class series is a great intro into your world and vision. I would see no problem with you taking a more relaxed approach to your videos (you have earned it!), however you'd be correct in assuming the YT algorithm does not favor "multimedia channels" (ie, gaming and cooking and crafts, gardening and fashion and homemaking) as apposed to single topic channels. That doesn't mean there aren't ways around it, as there are no rules against having separate channels for each medium, and connecting those channels through your main one. I frequent TH-cam, and it is my go-to platform for good informative content from good well meaning folks (even if it's few and far between). I would have no qualms against making a Patreon to watch your videos, but that may not be the same with so many who have grown to call this platform their 'home', and posting here (perhaps shorts?) may be a inevitable evil if your wish is that your message has a bigger reach. Regardless of your choice, it would be so lovely to see more from you. 🌱❤

      Thanks for the insightful reply. Through years of trial and error I’ve noticed that the best approach in TH-cam is to stick with highly engaging videos that cause viewers to want more. Longer videos also pay much more. In other words it is much better for me to do 1 mass appeal good video that gets 1 million views than 100 ok videos that get 10k views. The Patreon videos would be a way of rewarding those followers who are interested enough in me to want to see less produced stuff. And they are the audience most likely to enjoy it since they go so far as to contribute financially to the work. As for shorts they can have mass appeal but they tend not to convert to long form viewers and within my niche they are never going to be viral unless I do it in a way that just isn’t myself. If I eventually do a second channel on TH-cam to release the Patreon stuff it is still a question, but I think 2nd channels have a tendency of diluting the surprise element that benefits the primary channel.

    I love the whimsical feel of your garden. I love your big home. What is the size of your lot? I've incorporated many of these ideas in my yard. But trying to cover the ground successfully with plants is a challenge in Texas. I have wonderful fertile soil with lots of organic matter. The problem is the heat too much rain or not enough rain. It is definitely a labor of love.

      Thanks Dennis. They did come with moss already, that is true. Unfortunately because my garden is sunny, the moss didn't survive for long.

    Excellent! I have also come to the conclusion that brick or concrete squares is the best path option for my raised bed garden. This after 28 years of struggling with the crabgrass in the pathways invading my garden beds.
    I always remove the grass out of the bed, only to have it back the next year. I’ve tried wood chips, gravel, crushed cement, and other media. Everything grows the grass.
    I had an epiphany one day when I left a 12” x 5’ board Laying in one of my paths All the grass beneath it was dead and I decided then and there I needed a hard surface to combat this grass. Well done on the video, I really enjoyed them

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm happy to hear you concur with this conclusion. (with 28 years of experience). It may be more expensive but it is worth it. And if you can find a free source for these materials it would be worth the trouble of getting it.

    Brilliant episode! Don´t know why, but I liked that we could go on the trip outside of your property to "Second Chance" with you, maybe its because it gives a sense of space. "The Seed of Choice" looks nice, a lot of work too, well done!! Your channel has reached 30K subscribers, 10 days ago it was 27K (I think). Kudos!!!! Keep it up! Thank you for making such beautiful videos!
