It has been brought to my attention that it is important to buy untreated potatoes. Many organic potatoes are not treated to inhibit or suppress eye growth, those are ideal to plant. Also, as I mention in the video, don't eat sprouting potatoes due to solanine toxicity.
suburban homestead Just keep doing your thing and ignore the haters out there. That recipe was awesome and impressed my girlfriend beyond words.... Thanks again for your information! 👍
I was first captivated by your videos because of their high quality, your style of cinematography, and your obvious love of gardening--but the addition of your personalized soundtracks leave me totally enchanted by them. I really appreciate the hard work you've put into this channel. Love it!
@@suburbanhomestead thanks for being a friend to gardeners. I super small scale farm and everything I grow tastes better than store bought but since I don't come from a family of farmers I learn everything on youtube. I also find your soundtracks groovy
I growth them for the fun of picking them; I have my grandchildren help me, and for them is like digging for gold. I personally have a lot of excitement discovering quantity and sizes of the potatoes as well as watching the grandchildren enjoy the day.
As an artist and avid gardener, your videos are always such a pleasure to watch. I even watch some of them multiple times! Thanks and keep them coming. :)
+ladyhawthorne1 Thanks! Considering how expensive leeks are in the grocery store and how easy they grow, and how much more tender homegrown is, there is no reason not to plant them. Thanks for the box tip. I'll try it in the future.
Enjoyed your video. After many years of planting potatoes, I have stopped. I am now relying on the volunteers that come up every year. I love harvesting those little treasures from the ground.
These videos are soooooo much better than most BBC programmes. Muted colours so relaxing, watching you gardening and cooking is inspirational and reading the subtitles is engaging due to the lovely words you use to describe things. I love your co co nut measuring utensil.
I've JUST stumbled upon your channel and LOVE it. Since I've been volunteering with an organic farmer who is also a master gardener (and cultivates and donates all his produce to local soup kitchens), he's taught me a few things that may be helpful to you. I'll also confess that I haven't seen all the videos in your potato journey, so if I'm sharing what others have shared or what you've already discovered, please forgive me! ^_^ First, after cutting the potatoes, we placed them in open-sided crates, placed the crates inside a cool barn/shed and let them air dry for about 3-5 days. He explained this protects the 'seeds' from molding/rotting in the ground. Second, he recommended interplanting with onions and/or horseradish as roots that may help deter damage to your potatoes from moles/voles. Third, he gave me a small selection of his organic, untreated potatoes from the fall harvest of 2016. The suggestion was for me to save them for a spring planting: place them in a dry container, cover them lightly and set them in a cool, dark place with decent air circulation. I put them in an old planter, covered them with a piece of plastic and put them in the corner of my garage! I let them stay there all winter. I checked on them ever so often to make sure I didn't have a rotten potato spoiling the rest. This worked well for me - my planted potatoes are setting leaves now. The last thing he taught me (which I didn't learn until AFTER I'd planted my own), was that planting them any closer than 12"-18" proves wasteful. The potatoes need space. If you were unaware of any of this info, I sure hope it helps! I found your video on carrots SOOOO helpful (as I've tried growing carrots for 4 years in a row with zero success). I can't wait to try your recommendations! Thanks for sharing your know-how/journey.
Really nice video and the soundtrack was a joy to listen to. "Mistakes" aside this was therapeutic to watch (for the intimate bond with Nature that can still be cultivated even in modern times) and gives me encouragement to continue to try to grow potatoes. My efforts to date have not been that productive. Best of harvest yields to you and thanks!
Siloe i made your potato and leek soup but i used garam masala instead of thyme and i forgot to add tahini sauce but it turned out so good. Thanks for the recipe do share more recipes please :)
I love your channel. I'm in NZ. My father used the old fashioned but tried and true method, whole potatoes, chitted, a specific hole for each potato a foot apart and then mounded up all in rows. Blood and bone maybe? Planted in clay soil, well hoed, and the most amazing crop every time. New delicious potatoes for Xmas day (Southern Hemisphere). I tried a new method of no dig, organic, cut them into pieces, layered with compost and straw, and the result...hopeless! Will try my dads way next year as an experiment. He so loved his garden, a daughters regret, I didn't ask more:).
I love growing potatoes. In our year round growing climate I tend to plant them from March to August. Harvest from September to December. Harvesting them is like finding Easter eggs: purple, red, white, gold, russet...They are all there. I only plant potatoes from the market that I couldn't eat, when they sprout. My favorite dish lately is garden grown crispy purple potatoes tossed with green onions and asparagus. So pretty with the various purples from the potatoes and the bright green from the onion and asparagus. Just salt and olive oil. Delish.
I don't have leeks in my garden but I do have some large spring onions I just harvested and a dozen potatoes that will become tonights super thanks to this fabulose receipe.
I don't have much room in my garden for potatoes either - so I've been growing them in ''towers' that I make with fencing, straw, and soil. Works really well. Last year I planted 4 lbs of potatoes and harvested 20 lbs. Towers do need more in the way of watering than in ground.
you have the best sound tracks! I love how you bring gardening and cooking together. if your ever looking for a wife let me know lmfao. jk. but seriously awesome video quality too. absolutely wonderful
Nothing like watching one of your videos at the end of the day to relax, and feel refreshed and inspired! Your productions are something totally apart of the rest of the youtubers! Those purple potatoes look really weird, I wish I could have some in my country, were we only have 3 types :( Potatoes have always been an elusive crop for me to harvest! I love leeks! That stew not only looks delicious, but also light, refreshing and super healthy! (I want some) Thank you so much for your videos!
I'm happy to bring solace into your day. Potatoes have a harder time growing in warm climates. At least in brazil they tended to be more expensive than other tubers.
Ive grown potatoes many times, but this video has inspired me to grow leeks. Your description of the soup made me salivate. I can almost taste it. Now if only my leeks would grow faster!
I was skeptical about purple potatoes but you make them look delicious..I will be buying some purple seed potatoes and growing them this year as well..great job!
Thanks so much for this video. I planted potatoes for the first time this year. I chitted them on the windowsill also. I put them in the ground a week ago. They seem to be taking off! I'm going to go watch your no-thin carrot and garlic videos now :). You're a "go-to" of mine!
+Noble Homestead I'm glad your finding the videos helpful. I hope your potatoes fair better than mine :-) Try the carrot method and see if it works for you. As for the garlic, if you want higher production make sure to plant them in the fall in a sunny well fertilized spot that is mulched.
My potatoes are taking off :) My carrot seeds have been soaking for two days. As soon as I see the tiny sprout, I will be bresking out the cornstarch. I'll keep you posted :)
Hello from England. Got my first 6 potato breeds planted in 30L tubs a few weeks ago, defying the frosts, and their green leaves are now poking through the compost:) Very exciting. I have an allotment. A piece of land the Parish Council set aside to rent to members of the local community to use to grow vegetables and flowers, keep chickens and bees and generally enjoy the health of nature and the outdoors. It is nice to be part of an historic community asset. Just bought heritage seeds and those will go in next weekend. Thank you for your videos. I live in a great ground floor appartment but unfortunately with not much light, so youtube videos of homes and land etc are my substitute:) So much contradictory advice everywhere, I have got to the stage of sowing seeds ANYWAY on instinct, and seeing if they respond to nature and grow to crop. I enjoy experiments :) I am going to decorate the tubs artistically to create and interesting (!) space. Leeks (next video) gently fried in butter......yum. I shall try your recipes, thank you, you have a lovely enviroment there.....
+Darling Stuff Thanks! I glad the videos can be of inspiration. The concept of allotment is awesome. Everyone should have access to one if they so desired. I have seen a lot of people growing potatoes in containers and getting great harvest. I might have to try it in the future. Thanks for watching and writing!
Your leek turned out beautifully. Potatoes are my favorite thing to grow. Don't give up try planting them again. Nothing better than digging your own. Best wishes. E :)
Very interesting and a healthy stew. I would love to try this at home. You use a lot of Indian ingredients like turmeric, cumin and moong dhal (pulse you used). We use it a lot. Also moong dhal and spinach of any kind tastes marvellous topped with a small quantity of ghee. My kids love it :)
I enjoy ur videos because u suggest a way to use the products u've just grown. I'm a 2nd season Gardner and I want to try new kinds of veggies to create different kinds of cuisines. I have a question... where can I find some of the ingredients ur using (the paste used at the end)?? I'm in Philadelphia and there r a lot of Indian, Chinese and African stores, but not many Spanish stores near me. Can the items b ordered online???
Chiffonading those leeks is a chef-y move , Siloe! Caught you! lol I love leeks soup-recipe I got for weight loss from the book "French Women Don't Get Fat". I never thought about growing my own, but now I intend to at your recommendation, so thank you! Also when I clean leaks I soak them in a sink about 1/2 full of water, less H2O wasted washing singly for me, and I can do another chore while they soak. I'll be using this recipe for sure. I'm always looking for ways to utilize my overabundance of Thyme every summer. Thank you for what looks like another fantastic recipe!
+hope crews Yes you caught me! :-) Soaking them would save water. Thanks for the tip. Try growing the leeks, all you need is sun and paintience. Its worth it.
What a lovely song in the background. I live in Florida and just planted my summer crop of potatoes. I have a raised bed because of all the trees that surround my home. I plant mine shallow and as the stalk grows I mound dirt them. I used old planter with bottoms cut out. I just put them over each growing plant and fill as the plant grows. It works really well, and harvesting is very easy. Anyways, very enriching video and the song was beautiful. What language or ethnic background it is from?
Grow your spuds in a 5 gallon bucket lined with a shopping bag. You can remove the bag, take out a potato and then return it to the bucket so they can grow on .. p.s. love the background music. Did you happen to catch the winner of this year's Eurosong festival Brilliant!
Hi Siloe. Thank you for sharing yet another top notch video with us! A couple years ago I planted some potatoes that had sprouted in my larder. They did very well. They were not organic but they did well anyway. However, I have eaten potatoes that have sprouted all of my life. I have always heard that sprouted potatoes or potatoes that have started to turn green are poisonous but I'm still above ground and perpendicular ! Your potato / leek stew looks delicious. I am embarrassed to say that I have never thought of actually eating the dark green leaves because ( I suppose ) I have always been told that the dark green leaves are not edible. You are the first person I have ever known of who cooks and eats them. It certainly makes sense to eat them because , after all, why waste them? But I suppose composting them is not really wasting them. And lastly, I have noticed in your videos that you are vegan. So am I....except for when I am eating a steak, fowl, fish, or seafood...Your stew does look tasty and I ill be trying it soon.
I love the vibe in this video - very cozy! What's the music that starts around 6:30? Edit: I just watched closer and saw that it's you! Absolutely incredible. For anyone else interested, the title is "Olha o Alho," and you can find it on Siloé's bandcamp page.
I would like to know what part of the world you live in. If you said, I missed that. It helps to know when gardening for me as I am in a subtropical area of the USA. Growing here is a little different than other states/countries. I REALLY like your video and look forward to more! Thank you.
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR RECIPES FROM? MY MOUTH WAS WATERING WATCHING YOU COOK AND EAT THIS STEWUP. MY GOODNESS. MY WAY OF COOKIN. AND YOUR GARDEN... WOW! BEAUTIFUL! EVEN THE INSIDE OF YOUR HOUSE IS DECORATED SO BEAUTIFULLY. AND IT'S SO CLEAN. ESPECIALLY THE KITCHEN. I 😍 LOVE YOUR VIDEOS AND RECIPES. THANKS!
Thanks! I appreciate the positive words. I love that you enjoy the videos. As for the recipes, most of them I invent on the spot either just from an idea or as a modification of a recipe I've seen or tried before. It's usually based on whatever I have at hand at the time.
Hello Suburban Homestead. This is my first visit to your channel and I have to say what a well presented video. Your pinned comment caught my eye. Surely growth inhibitor is a myth. If store bought potatoes had a growth inhibitor sprayed on them, surely the stores would have to tell us that and who would buy them who would eat them? I have chitted and grown lots of different varieties of store bought potato here in the UK and I have never had any that would not chit and grow on. Perhaps this is an American thing?
This is my first attempt at growing potatoes. I thought it would be best to put them in a dark cool location in a brown paper bag. That didn't work. 1st failure. Putting them in seed starter worked well and they looked like a spider with many legs after about 2 weeks. I was able to pick up some starter at a store and I planted 4 different 5 gallon buckets with 4 in each. I am finally seeing some green growth. The Seed potatoes are doing better but I think the organic will be fine. I'm starting to see growth on them as well. I guess I'll know around the middle of August.
That's neat. :) My favorite way to grow potatoes is in a tower. Some people use old car tires for that as well. I prefer using barrels but I can see the reasons for using car tires. Maybe someday I will make myself some round wooden stacking rings for growing potatoes. :) - Heidi
if you put two bucket inside eachother, and cut some holes in the sides of the inner bucket. big holes so its more hole than bucket, then stack them again, pour in soil and plant your potatoes. Now you can lift the inner bucket and "pluck" the potatoes as they start to grow, then you put it back in the bucket, and you can keep doing this all season, and get from one pot what most get from a long row, or more. plant like 3 potatoes in a bucket for best result.
The reason for letting the cut sides dry is to prevent disease. You may get away with planting them right after cutting but that is luck rather than fact. They also don't need to be in sun but in a breezy shade unless that is all you have.
Hey, Siloé, great video. I've been wondering in which region you are located... Just for geographic reference. The first video I watched I wondered if you were Brazilian, but now I'm quite sure >°< As a young Brazilian just stating to choose where I want my garden to be (can't even choose a continent) when I move out from my parents apartment, I am trying to reach out to everyone I can for information on climates around the world and growing seasons length and all that... If you can, please share some positive and negative points of your location, that would be an interesting video for me shauahauah. Thanks for the great content you make, so much better than watching tv round here...
In my country, the green part of leek leaf is thinly chopped and then sprinkled on a bread with butter. Well, I apply an inch thick layer of chopped leek on my bread.. Yum! (just don't do it before going on a date)
if you try them again, i got some experience i want to share. No need to cut em' up, in fact, by keeping the tubers whole you add more energy to the developing vines and dont risk exposing the insides to disease or rot. I grow in buckets because my soil is not near as nice as yours. Thanks as always, Failure is just another opportunity to learn. FAIL = First Attempt In Learning. Love the suspenders btw, im gonna have to wear some in my next vid just for you !
+Permaculture Homestead Thanks for the good tips. I'll try them again in the future. Suspenders are super comfortable man, especially when working outside.
you should plant potatoes in june anyway. that will help avoid tater bugs. Also the seed taters supply a lot of the energy to the plant. so dont cut them up before planting.
Thanks. Leek is delicious! I have thought about putting the recipes written in a blog for those interested. Although most of the time it is less about the exact proportion of ingredients and more the process.
I lay the potatoes on the ground, surround with shredded comfrey and cover with loose hay. As they grown I build up the hay so just the top of the plants show. To harvest. Push the hay away and pick out the biggest potatoes and leave the rest to grow on. I grow in the shade of giant chestnut trees. No problem.
Spiritual Matters : sounds interesting to replant the root of the leek. I replant green onions. I leave about half an inch of the bottoms and put them into a pot on my windowsill but I don't cover the entire stub 'cause that would kill it. I also sometimes save the lower half inch of a bulb onion and trim it and plant the same way and it makes a scallion also. So now I'm going to try your leek idea and I bet it will work the same.
Yes, gardening is a beautiful example of how God replenishes us abundantly; and yet, we throw away so much as 'compost' or waste. I've had success rooting and planting cabbage and lettuce as well. There are many videos on the web showing the primary veggies that will root from the 'end'. Peace.
Ah! My leek seeds never grow! I have tried sprouting in jars and in tissue. t/rying straight to soil now but I think my seeds are bad... They smell like onions after a few days but don't sprout... Sigh looking for a new source of seeds... Am I doing anything wrong? Thanks in advance!♡
+flashhassen I believe your seeds are old and not viable anymore. Get a new batch of seeds. If seeds don't germinate in the tissue it usually mean they are dead.
It has been brought to my attention that it is important to buy untreated potatoes. Many organic potatoes are not treated to inhibit or suppress eye growth, those are ideal to plant. Also, as I mention in the video, don't eat sprouting potatoes due to solanine toxicity.

Jag skulle så gärna vilja ha denna sort potatis du visat i videon.Är det möjligt att skicka till Brasilien? Tack.

+suburban homestead I will. Lolo won't try it though- she's the kid you're referring to that you haven't met.
+Lolita's Garden Because of the Potatoes? I certainly have not met her :-)
+suburban homestead Yes. She does not like potatoes. Not sure why. Maybe I'll stop throwing them at her.
+Lolita's Garden wow. Well you don't like tomatoes, so it could be a family thing, Night shade family
What was the music? Sounds so ancient medieval Irish/English. Love ur style. Just very soothing and natural.
Look at the colours in that stew!
I always look forward to your videos. Thank you!
+Liwayputi Thanks! It's great to know that!
I will definitely be adding leeks i'll let you know how my spuds do this year, i'm a 1st time grower so we'll just have to pray and see.
Amazing video.
+Mr & Miss behave Thanks!
Very informative and entertaining
wow...looks yummy.. healthy and fresh from the garden , love your video ❤
Thanks! Eating fresh is always best!
very nice video. the stew looked delicious
I would bypass the plastic liner because of the possibility of chemicals leeching into the soil. I would suggest a food grade bucket..
How do you think quinoa would work as alternative to Indian peas or "fast cooking lentils"? Do you harvest your amaranth?
Another great video! I love leeks but I tend to forget about them until something like this reminds me, lol. Beautiful song -- lyrical and haunting.
+Jeanette Waverly Thanks you. I'm glad you enjoyed the song. (I love the description!)
I love the vibe in this video - very cozy! What's the music that starts around 6:30?
Edit: I just watched closer and saw that it's you! Absolutely incredible. For anyone else interested, the title is "Olha o Alho," and you can find it on Siloé's bandcamp page.
Great detective work, my friend! :-)
I would like to know what part of the world you live in. If you said, I missed that. It helps to know when gardening for me as I am in a subtropical area of the USA. Growing here is a little different than other states/countries.
I REALLY like your video and look forward to more! Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your leek stew recipe. I have never used leeks before but you have made me want to try.
You are welcome. I hope you like it
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR RECIPES FROM?
I'm not a big fan of onion-type vegetables, but something tells me that if one put in some sort of meat, that stew would be good for Winter.
Mesmerizing!
jealous of yur kitchen n garden lol. lovely vid
Mt bem, amigo :-) I simply love your video production approach.
Muito obrigado!
That's neat. :) My favorite way to grow potatoes is in a tower. Some people use old car tires for that as well. I prefer using barrels but I can see the reasons for using car tires. Maybe someday I will make myself some round wooden stacking rings for growing potatoes. :) - Heidi
+BlackCat2 Thanks for sharing! I've seen people have great results with that. I may try that in the future.
I'm growing my potatoes in barrels too! I have a fear of potato bugs so I'm hoping this will prevent them from making my garden their home.
Karahbell wait til june before planting taters and there should be way less tater bugs. june 7 is a good date here in michigan.
if you put two bucket inside eachother, and cut some holes in the sides of the inner bucket. big holes so its more hole than bucket, then stack them again, pour in soil and plant your potatoes. Now you can lift the inner bucket and "pluck" the potatoes as they start to grow, then you put it back in the bucket, and you can keep doing this all season, and get from one pot what most get from a long row, or more. plant like 3 potatoes in a bucket for best result.
so cool .. thanks and bonne appetit !
I haven't ever used leeks before but I'm going to use this recipe. Thanks for sharing it.
The reason for letting the cut sides dry is to prevent disease. You may get away with planting them right after cutting but that is luck rather than fact. They also don't need to be in sun but in a breezy shade unless that is all you have.
Thanks for the tips. Hopefully I will do better next time. I hope you enjoyed the video.
Love the "Go Plant Potatoes" saying... plus your soup and lentil measuring bowls. Are they wood, bamboo or...?
+AnoushBotanical It is a very odd saying indeed. The soup bowl is a turned wood bowl. The lentil measuring bowl is half of a coconut shell.
Brilliant!
love the bowls
I found this video by searching your channel for leeks. Your leeks look amazing!
I'm in Maryland. That is a great idea for a future video. Thanks!
In my country, the green part of leek leaf is thinly chopped and then sprinkled on a bread with butter. Well, I apply an inch thick layer of chopped leek on my bread.. Yum! (just don't do it before going on a date)
That sounds like a good idea
Great video!!
thanks!
if you try them again, i got some experience i want to share.
+Permaculture Homestead Hold up those fancy beer pants.
lol YES !! suspenders with beer pants i like the visual. just for you
We chucked whole taters in the soil without the cut and chit step. Growth ensued. Harvest results forthcoming.
Lolita's Garden well get on the garden porn vids bruh ! we been missing your content
Sounds good!
i love this!
Thanks!
I'll be making the Potato Leek stew when mine plants produce! I keep stopping the videos to write down your recipies!
No problem.
We never sprouted our potatoes on the farm, and we didn't let them scab over. Our crop was always huge and we had monster potatoes.
Great to know
Its good to hear you laugh. You do a really good job on your show. I still haven't seen seed of choice where can I watch it?
I'm glad to hear you enjoy the show. Seed of choice is available to rent though my channel. Thanks!
Instead of sunning the cut potatoes you can cover them in ashes to prevent rot.
Wow I did not know that. Thanks for the tip.
Hey mate great video,
I'm just wondering what song that starts playing at 6:30
I enjoyed your vid,,, good job
Thanks!
Great video. Could you plant the root of the leek you uprooted back into the garden? Blessings!
Ok thanks♡
