On one hand it’s their choice to have their wedding where ever they want however they want and to inform their guests of the details. On the other hand don’t expect people to say yes if they feel they can’t go no matter the circumstances. Because if you have a set criteria on how much it’s going to cost them then don’t be surprised if they can’t make it.

I would too. It’s selfish of her to force them to go to go to another country and have to save up for months. If she wants it there, have a commitment ceremony here and have it there. That’s way more money than they’d spend on clothes and gifts. It’s a passport (if they don’t have one), tickets, accomodation, meals while they’re there, other expenses, etc. it’s like forcing them to have the holiday THEY want to have.

  • @anniewallace3601

I think everyone missed the point of showing the segment to this family. Yes is it selfish to expect people to save money and be able to go far away and are they right that they could have had a beautiful wedding near their family and friends. Dr phil was showing this father the flaw in his thinking. He's willing to spend thousands and thousands on someone he barely knows for a long distance relationship but it's offensive to his sensibilities to spend less than he has on that for his daughters wedding. That doesn't make sense and his excuse of I don't have the money is just that a excuse. He's mad they didn't pick where he thought the wedding should be so he doesn't want to go. It's simple as that. Yes I would never spend this amount of money on my own wedding or others. My husband and I saved up for our future for a year and because of savings we already had built I was able to contribute 10,000 on our wedding and he had 10,000 for the down payment of our first condo. I much rather do that then not be able to have half my family at the wedding and we still had a beautiful day. It was perfect. I never will understand when people spends so much on a wedding but I also don't understand why a father would choose to spend thousands on a romantic relationship but not on a wedding with his daughter. Both of their priorities are on the wrong thing.

  • @tcurry1531

If you are planning a destination wedding you must not want people to come. I wouldn't care if you were friendly. Would he be at your wedding if you had it locally? If so then you can't be made at him for not wanting to spend the extra money. The only destination wedding we went to was in Hawaii and it was because we were going there anyway, we just had to change the date of our vacation. You could have ask the question on who would attend before you made your decision.

There’s also the time off work, the other expenses they’ll have while there, possibly trying to get care for children, animals, a destination they don’t necessarily want to go to and be stuck at for a week, for something that they’ll be a part of for a few hours.
If she said I want this for my wedding present it’s 1,500 bucks, I’m giving you this long to save for it it’s just as rude. It’s way more than people would pay on a regular wedding. The problem with this family is the drama and lack of empathy. Weddings are stressful, regardless of the destination. A million decisions are put on the bride and groom’s shoulders, and any one decision could infuriate a family member.
This drama would have come up at any location, even if it was being held in the bride’s backyard. As close family, given 2 years notice, they are not at all obligated to attend. But watching your sister/daughter get married is a one in a lifetime moment, and there is irretrievable damage done by not attending.
