Love this concept of a series! Should be a lot of fun! The charity concept is fantastic, and I love the message you talk about at 12:15 (parcel sold already at a massive profit so congratulations!)
Thanks W :). Glad you enjoyed it. Appreciate you are watching and liking my idea. D may get you involved here. I am very open to anything. Lets create something special for everyone to enjoy.
Yes he spoke to me yesterday, told him to pop me an email when the parcel arrives with him. Excited for us to make the community some more content :D@@AusOpal
tx Kev we got 3.5K so far from that 150. and I just spend it on some amazing high grade opal this will be a good vid when i make it hopefully we get close to 10K with those
I really REALLY WANT an Opaltunity !!! But somehow I don’t believe that was a $150 parcel. Every parcel I’ve found for $150 usd has been tiny chips, not even close to the size stones you’re holding up between your fingers. I’m NOT an Opal cutter, nor have I ever even held rough in my hands, but I want to. Would you buy a $150 parcel for me ?
Hey Michael. Thanks for reaching out and the comment. Love the Opaltunity :) great play oin words. . This was exceptional value and as you watch the series you will find i may get some more of that value but also some not so good. This is the opal game it is a gamble when you buy rough. That parcel was sold since and we got 970 for it and it is still good value at that. I did expose some colour and took some of the risk out hence the price increase. I don't usually buy big parcels for such small asking price as it usually is what you say. Because the nature of the gamble i wouldn't go and buy on someone's behalf that is just asking for trouble :) All i can do is tell you to buy from couple of online auctions that are ok or my store www.ausoopalstore.com. There isn't much of that for the money. You have to take into account that for every parcel like that there may be 5 that will make nothing hence i need to sell the good ones for more money otherwise i slowly go broke :). You no doubt I can find small parcel of just couple of stones for 150USD that you can double or more in value by cutting and polishing them. If you need help with putting something together please reach out through my store.
I didn't get email from you. check the email address or maybe get on the chat and put your details in or subscribe to the store and i should get your details for contact tx :)
For the 2nd stone, Can the sandstone in the face of the opal be treated with sugar&acid (like Andamooka matrix) to make the Sandy spots black and the colour pop? Wld that work for this mintabie opal?
thank you for watching and question. Apart from my own store which is not so cheap but a good value for what is there i would recommend online auctions and patience really listening and watching to the seller and even asking them if they have other material outside of Auctions. One I highly recommend watching is Brucie's Aus Opals on facebook. Ask Robbies Nobbies too he has some good stuff. Like with anyone though there is always a risk with rough . I have 100% money guarantee on www.AusOpalStore.com so it takes bit of the risk out. Sorry for selling my store here not really my main intention of the channel but i had to say it from time to time as I see community struggling to get good value opal online.
This one was from an Old timer. There is good value around at social media auctions if you take your time watching them for hours you will find decent parcels. Look at Brucie's Aus Opals auctions he is a good man.
would like to know who you buy that parcel off would like to buy my self some for that money, the stuff i been getting for $200 plus is only 100 to 200ct and not good looks good on video but only shit you could say
that 10 oz looks like a great deal to me. Yeah, Mintabie is rough to work with and probably a bigger gamble than other fields. You can almost justify the disappointing buys are an investment in knowledge and skill.
I hear you I still get shit sometimes :) This one is from a trusted old timer but even then you get some better then others as you probably know. So can't recommend here as the next one could be shit and I look like a fool which btw it's sometimes is suitable to me :) but rather not if I can help it
I just bought a bunch of rough recently. Overpaid for a lot of it. I have a very hard time finding good material for my budget. I did get a couple of nice cheap pieces though, one for just 2 dollars, I might get 20 for the cut stones after. Got some nice Mintabie rough but very hard material. Currently bidding on an awesome little parcel of black Mintabie opal. From one of the miners on ebay. I have a really nice red black rub for sale myself that I got from him in rough but no interest, its too thin and flat I reckon. Not even asking a lot. So I dunno.
good luck. it really is disappointing to spend good money and not get anything near value in return. such is that gamble when you cannot buy in person. even then...
Not an easy game this one, i struggled plenty first couple of years. a lot of the cheap material is hard to sell with thin pieces better of getting them really thin and making doublets in my experience. I also find that you are better of buying one good stone for more then 5 average ones for the same amount. Mintabie is nice, good luck with that one maybe it will be the money maker :) thank you for watching and comments
@@AusOpal I learned just about evetything I know from Justin. So while I know doublets can make money, I dont wanna put something out there that may be used to dupe someone down the line. Thats the stance he takes but he can obviously afford to! Its almost perfect for it though, the piece I have up. I'm coming to terms with that being what I may have to do to make a bit of money that way to get ahead and get properly started. Happy to watch your content, you're a good guy!
tx I appreciate the comment and Justin is awesome and I too have learned a lot from him. If you tell people it's a doublet it is ok. I get though that there are people out there that would maybe swindle someone and pass it as solid. We can't be motivated but the few that are doing the wrong thing. A lot of people simply cannot afford a good solid opal and a good doublet is a way for them to still have a special experience and see those awesome gem colours for a lot less. @@NomadUniverse
Do it if you are lucky enough to get the right rough (and not screw that up). That said, your expertise is far superior to mine. So good luck in this venture. Side note: I wish I had the surplus cash to buy 10 oz of mintabie. Also, I find doing a very large opal with a dremel is quite difficult to get a smooth dome, without waviness. Perhaps as my skill increases that will fade.
Thanks Don. I won't screw it up getting the rough. I had enough time buying it and enough screw ups and loss of money to know better. Yes the dome with dremel is a skill that I do not possess yet it's a hard one. Good luck with that I am sure we will see it soon? I. hope the 10oz gets a good price to get us started and the 10K its also not the end . We will keep making difference somehow with this journey . It's all non profit it's fun and in good spirit to make a difference somewhere .
@@AusOpal It is a great use of your platform/channel. I think that whomever gets the parcel should be pleased. Mintabe is strange material, but pretty fun even when its a picture stone or cracks. I have had a couple successes with it.
Hey tog, yeah dremel hard to dome with , I switched to doping stone earlier in process, and flat lap disc, 2k grit (no machine) , much easier to dome, I'm getting better results, but still long way to go, It may work for you too
