Pentagon releases footage of 'highly concerning' aircraft intercepts by Chinese planes

  • The Pentagon has released footage of some of the more than 180 intercepts of U.S. warplanes by Chinese aircraft that have occurred in the last two years - more than the total amount over the previous decade and part of a trend U.S. military officials called concerning.
The photos and video were released in advance of a soon-to-be issued annual report by the Pentagon on the China’s military power and the security threats it may pose to partners in the Indo-Pacific.
The Pentagon has tried for years to posture itself to be ready for a potential conflict with China over Taiwan even as it now finds itself supporting allies in two hot wars, Ukraine in Europe and Israel in the Middle East.
The officials said the Chinese flights were risky and aggressive in nature, but stopped short of calling most of them unsafe - a specific term that is used only in the most egregious cases. Still the officials said it was important to release the footage and call out the behavior because they said it was part of a larger trend of regional intimidation by China that could accidentally lead to conflict.
“All of these examples we’ve released today underscore the coercive intent of (China) by engaging in behaviors particularly in international airspace,” said Ely Ratner, assistant secretary of defense for Indo-Pacific security affairs. “The bottom line is that in many cases, this type of operational behavior can cause active and dangerous accidents" and can lead inadvertently to conflict, Ratner said.

Saying its "near mainland china" implies its solely to piss them off, which is just not true. In comparison, the Chinese flying war planes off the US coast would be an undeniable, inexcusable display of aggression. Well, there is no traffic lane in the air. No laws enforcing how close you can fly within another. No punishment for violations as well. But there are laws on boundaries and ADIZ as well which USA does not recognize but utilizes the rules to justify its own actions.
So if China is doing the same thing within their own territories, ADIZ or in international air space, then whatever USA is claiming is moot. They have every right to be there, however close to you.
If you don't want them to behave this way, then stop traveling over to their space to provoke them. This is all USA's own doing.
To give you an example, if I carry an AR-15 rifle, loaded with extended clip, travel 5000 miles away from my home and go patrol everyday outside the public pavement of your home, and no law enforcement can ever stop me from doing that, how would you feel about it? Would you also buy your own AR-15 file, loaded with extended clip, maybe bring another family member of yours and patrol right next to me until I go away?
If so, how do you blame the home owners for behaving this way? And almost always the homeowner in the example is China. USA does not own an single territory in South China Sea or Yellow Sea, or Taiwan Strait. Not one. So why are we there?
USA doesn't own the skies, neither do China. But sure as hell, China has the right to defend their air space and what they perceived as potential threat. You don't like it, stop flying there and stay in your own lane.

Errr.... the thing about spy planes in "international airspace" is pretty vague. While a spy plane itself is physically within international airspace- its spying capabilities spreads to dozens of miles in radius, going well within nation's airspace and territory. Same with Russia's reaction to US spy planes. They understand prettyw ell that these placnes have a long distance radar and vision to see within their territory. So poking finger solely about international airpsace, is not quite right.

You have zero clue what you're talking about. Our military presence in eastern asia is much more justified than the chinese sending over balloons over the actual US, not even around it. We have actual allies in the form of south korea and japan, which also links up with southern/eastern asia as a whole. Us being "close" to china is a blatantly deceitful attempt at justifying that the US should abandon all our allies in asia.
Please learn to think before speaking.
