- Thirty years after the end of the Cold War, the United States and Russia are yet again standing face to face over Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has renewed nuclear threat to the West, possesses the biggest weapon ever made, the world’s largest ever nuclear device - the Tsar Bomba or "the Emperor of Bombs".
On October 30, 1961, at the peak of the Cold War, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev sent an unmistakable warning to the West by testing the most powerful weapon mankind had ever seen. The Tsar Bomba was 2000 times more powerful than the American bomb dropped on Nagasaki and 10 times the total firepower used in the entire Second World War.
Can the course of the war in Ukraine today force Russia to resort to its deadly nuclear weapons? Will Putin use the world’s largest nuclear bomb if tensions with the West over Ukraine escalate?

Stalin was more aware about progres of the American nuclear program than US president when the first test was conducted and Stalin ordered development of Soviet version long before the first test... one of the scientists in USSR noticed that there is lack of any info about nuclear research in American scientific press and concluded that USA started nuclear program and that is why all information about it are baned. He informed Stalin about it and that is when Soviets nuclear program started.

There is a limit to how big nuclear explosions can be and still be practical to use. Bombs the size of the Tsar Bomba and larger are so powerful that they break through the top of the Earth's stratosphere and dissipate the majority of their energy into outer space uselessly. Therefore, a more efficient way to use nuclear weapons is to use a number of smaller bombs scattered over a wider area. This fact is already known to nuclear powers. That is why bombs the size of Tsar Bomba will never actually be used in a nuclear war.

@@143366220798 The answer is that they might not have originally known this information and found it out experimentally. Also, the Tsar Bomba was as much a political development as a military one to showcase what the Soviet Union could do to a scientifically unsophisticated public.
Nope they are practical for a torpedo deliver system. Look at status 6 nuclear torpedo, it can have a yield of 100 megatons. You only need a few to destroy all coastal US cities and islands and you don't even need to be accurate just explode near the target. And they are stealthy, and have a less complex delivery method compared to missiles.

This baby was so big that it needed a specifically modified bomber to carry it to its destination, hence it was never designed for usage in war. Intercontinental missiles with hypersonic and MIRV warheads are much more practical and still very effective. But it doesn´t matter. The usage of strategic nukes would always result in MAD.

The Tsar Bomba was designed purely as a 'statement' of Soviet capability. (And probably a 'warning' to the west) It has little military significance, today. That's the reason most nuclear weapons 'top-out' at around 10 megatons. Remember, thermonuclear weapons can be built, pretty much with unlimited power. It's extremely unlikely that any country has 50-100 megaton weapons. No need today, it's all about accuracy.

i hate to need to tell you all, but the tsar bomba was only built 3 times, one was detonated as shown in the video, the 2nd was a prototype, and the third just wasnt completed. hope this helps anyone worried about this

The Tsar bomb was a one of a kind bomb and its beployment was extremely hard to do. it was never repeated. in fact it was a multi stage weapon.
If you look inside it in the photo it has 6 smaller nuclear warheads inside it they are the shiny metal cylinders, the tirtiary stage which was not used was to be in the center and on top of that the outer casing was supposed to be uranium and they used plain old lead as the reflector/tamper layer. Imagine how strong it would have been if it were fully assembled with all the nuclear fuel installed... whole lotta NOPE... 🤔🌅😲😵😵😵

The bigger the bomb the hardest it is to mount it on a ICBM or a submarine and the easier it is to intercept it, the real danger is the smaller nuke MIRV where a single ICBM splits into multiple smaller nukes, which are mush harder to intercept and can cause greater damage over a bigger area.

Why would he use a TSAR Bomb when there are smaller tactical nukes available to him? I'm an 80's kid grew up watching THREADS, scared the life out of me. I'm 51 now

So it is not anecdotal that Americans (the ones in charge) are indeed as stupid as everyone thinks, and when their plan to subjugate Russia fails, they try the same thing again and again and again, and even though this results in high inflation in the west, with lack of fuel and electricity unemployment and possible hunger, blow me they still won't stop the sanctions and apologise for being so childish that everyone must obey them.
